Is Ryan Gosling actually getting Oscar buzz for playing Ken in ‘Barbie’?

Ryan Gosling plays Ken in the Barbie movie, and early reviews say that Gosling has given a hilarious performance. His part of the promotional tour has been pretty amazing – someone said playing Ken broke Gosling’s brain, but I think Gosling is just having a lot of fun and not taking any of this seriously. Anyway, did we know that Ryan Gosling sings in Barbie? I didn’t know that, and Warner Bros released a new clip which is basically a pop music video of Gosling singing “Just Ken,” his theme song.

I appreciate the fact that Gosling has infused this role with some pathos and “blonde fragility” and I love that he’s singing and that Ken has a music video. I get the feeling that there are many music videos and dance breaks within the movie – Dua Lipa is Mermaid Barbie and she sings, right? Anyway, as I said, the early reviews are great and people are already buzzing about how Gosling should be in the Oscar conversation. OMG.

I laughed so hard at this. Way to go Kenadians!!

  2. Normades says:

Well Margot Robbie did say he has the best comedic timing out of any actor she’s ever worked with. Gosling is definitely “due” so I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a nom (but not win).

Expect also a nom for Greta Gerwig and costume and set design.

This PR campaign is really something because now I am super excited to see this film, it looks so fuuuun!!!

  4. Snuffles says:

Is this the first time Ryan has sung for a project since his Mickey Mouse Club days?

This video is hilarious and got me to buy my ticket. Simu Liu also looks fantastic in these clips and I’m excited for him too.

  5. GiveMePizza says:

But did his portrayal as Ken also get a standing ovation at Cannes?

  6. Bee says:

Clearly, I need to go see this before it gets to the point where people are singing along to everything. And yes I will be wearing pink.

I fell in love with Ryan on Breaker High, so this movie feels like a return to his comedic roots. Can’t wait to see it.

Breaker High! Wow what a throwback. That’s the first thing I remember him from. I never saw him in Mickey Mouse Club because my mom refused to pay for Disney.

I don’t understand this whole Barbie thing but am now admittedly curious

  9. Mslove says:

Clearly Ryan Gosling’s Ken is saving the movies, not that jerk Tom Cruise. I can’t wait to see this movie.

I love when actors make these absolutely stark choices. Never in a million years would I think RG would play Ken and yet here he is promoting the hell out of his film, completely embracing Ken and doing it all with panache and a wink. Yes Ryan you go live!!💗

    • Christine says:

Seriously, it’s the dedication with which he is leaning into this that is going to make me see it in the theaters. I love it when actors make brave choices and go all in.

Every once in a blue moon, the Academy unclenches long enough to honor someone who gives a bonkers comedic performance, i.e. Kevin Kline in “A Fish Called Wanda,” or Marisa Tomei in “My Cousin Vinny.” Doesn’t happen often, though. If “Barbie” makes a mountain of money, though, it could happen.

  12. Jeannine Pope says:

This has me so stoked! I have my pink dress and shoes ready! RG has two daughters and he said in his GQ interview that he was walking around outside and saw Ken face down in the mud. That was when he decided that Ken needed more respect, and he was going to play that role. I have never been “into” RG, but I have always thought he was an incredible actor, Blue Valentine and Blade Runner 2049 really got me and The Nice Guys for comedy. I am just waiting to see him go the full Ken here!

  13. Digital Unicorn says:

I soooooo wanna see this – ‘Ken, call me – I will love you ALWAYS’ even with the waist bag.

  14. Emily says:

This song kills me. I can’t stop laughing.

I’M ENOUGH AND I’M GREAT AT DOING STUFF.

  15. PrincessOfWaffles says:

No! I don’t wanna watch too many clips from the movie! That movie must stay a surprise for meeee!!!!

Looks like it’s all about ken – but I don’t wanna to speculate!!
