Did Ricky Martin & Jwan Yosef have an open marriage & that’s why they’re divorcing?

Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef announced their split last week. They were married in 2018 after being together since 2015. They seemed solid, although they never overshared about their marriage. I have no idea if this is going to be a big divorce battle, but the British and Spanish tabloids are convinced that the split was pretty dramatic. Days ago, the Mail spoke to a “friend” of Ricky and Jwan and the friend said that Ricky and Jwan had an open marriage and Ricky basically did whatever he wanted:

Ricky Martin and his soon-to-be ex-husband Jwan Yosef ‘had an open marriage’ that saw them ‘engaging in sex together and with other people’, a close friend of the singer has revealed. Livin’ La Vida Loca singer Ricky, 51, and Jwan, 38, announced this week that they were divorcing after six years together – and now an insider has revealed how the pair ultimately ‘fell out of love’ after years of enjoying an ‘open’ relationship, while insisting that infidelity was not a factor in their split.

‘Like many couples, Ricky and Jwan had an open relationship for most of their marriage and this worked for them, until it didn’t,’ the pal told DailyMail.com. ‘That being said, neither of them fell in love with someone else. Sex was something they engaged in together and separate with other partners. In the end they decided that it was best for them, their well being and for their kids if they end it amicably,’ the source went on – adding that the couple has a ‘tight prenup’ in place that will ensure Jwan is ‘taken care of forever’.

‘Ricky will likely keep the house but Jwan will remain an important part of his life, and their kids’ lives, moving forward. He will be taken care of forever and will not have to worry about his finances, at least until their children are all adults. Ricky knows the value of him being a father in their kids lives.’

According to the friend, Ricky and Jwan’s marriage came to an end after the pair realized that there was no longer any ‘passion’ between them, explaining: ‘Ultimately, they fell out of love. Their passion turned into a friendship and the sex became barely non-existent.’

Another issue facing the men, the source added, is the fact that Jwan felt that there was ‘huge imbalance’ between them – despite Ricky ‘always telling him was not the case’. ‘You cannot really hold a candle to a husband who is a world famous millionaire worth over $100 million,’ the insider shared. ‘Like in many marriages, Ricky was essentially the breadwinner while Jwan took care of the home and the kids while he was busy doing what Ricky does. [However this did] also work well for them because they each played an important role. The fact that Jwan is 13 years younger didn’t help. They were a generation apart and from different cultures.’

[From The Daily Mail]

If their marriage was really like this, I’m astonished by the lack of gossip – if Ricky really had multiple, no-strings-attached partners, that means that no one talked for years and Ricky really has his personal life on lockdown. Speaking of, Marca thinks they know the identity of one of Ricky’s lovers: an adult-film actor named Max Barz. Apparently, Ricky and Max follow each other on social media and Ricky is “obsessed” with him. Hm. I wonder if Ricky is the kind of man who would only leave his spouse if he had a jumpoff waiting in the wings.

I get the feeling that Ricky was the one who got to enjoy their “open” status while Jwan was at home taking care of the kids. Also…the whole thing with the nephew will never not be on my mind when I think of Ricky. The way that went down and was quickly hushed up will make me forever give him side eye.

Yeah, that changed how I think of a Ricky permanently. Icky Ricky now and forever.

Also grossed out by the ‘taken care of, at least until the kids are adults’. Um… Jwan put his career on hold and ultimately damaged it to take care of the kids. That’s a lifetime. Not just until the twins are 18.

      I hope Jwan is OK.

  2. Normades says:

It sounds like jwan was the primary caregiver of the children so I don’t know why he should move out of the house. Ricky sounds messsssy and very permiscous. If the story about the porn star is true that’s just unfortunate for jwan.

    • JanetDR says:

Primary caregiver getting the house is the least disruptive thing for the kids for sure!
The rest of it…I have nothing to say 😳

I just do not understand the open marriage idea.
To me, married is faithful to your spouse, period.

Let’s face it, very wealthy people often feel they have no rules. They think they have the money they make the rules, take it or leave it.
And Ricky has the money, fame, years older. Classic power imbalance.

The passion was gone. Well, welcome to the club here Ricky. Getting older, having 4 kids it is called real life.
But of course the wealthy have options. Not like us working folks who have to try to stay together bc financially neither of us can afford to keep changing partners and live as if we are 24 forever.

A lasting marriage is a rare thing in Hollywood.

I have friends that had an open marriage. It worked out fine for years until one day he actually fell for his new side piece. They are divorcing now and she’s super depressed about it.

I feel like it’s playing with fire.

If you’re constantly seeking people who you are attracted to and engage physically with, you’re going to get that new relationship energy from someone at some point.

Especially when the main relationship is more mature and that first infatuation wears off.

Is everybody forgetting the situation with the nephew? It was clear that Ricky was stepping out of the marriage. I didn’t know that his husband was 13 years younger than him.

I’m all for people living their lives on their terms but the open and poly people always seem to have so much drama going on! I tried an “ethical non monogamous” relationship at the suggestion of a partner and my god it was awfu! It caused so many fights and communication problems and was not worth it at all. I’m sure it works great for some but after that experience I would never do it again for myself. I think for people who works for a definitely the exception.

  6. Twin Falls says:

Jwan had a career until he met Ricky and even if he gave it up voluntarily to be the primary at home parent, this article makes it sound like he never did anything other than marry Ricky Martin. I don’t think this source is a mutual friend.

I think we’re viewing this through female eyes. Men can compartmentalise sex & relationships in a way women can’t. When women have sex we catch feelings but men are more able to have purely sexual interactions. I know a LOT of gay men & this is not an unusual set up at all. In fact gay men are able to lean into their sexuality more easily than straight men who have us as a sort of barrier to that kind of open infidelity.

  8. Kkat says:

When the whole nephew thing went down, I said on here if they get divorced fairly soon, we will know the nephew wasn’t lying.

    • Rnot says:

News of the nephew thing broke in July of 2022. News of divorce broke almost exactly 12 months later. Sounds like a negotiated delay for the sake of appearances.

  9. Molly says:

Not a ton of thoughts on Ricky and Jwan, but just wanted to throw in a positive perspective from someone in an open marriage. Six years going, it’s not for the faint of heart but it works for us. Very grateful to have this relationship model, actually. Cheers!

    • Bee says:

I agree. The marriage didn’t fall apart because it was open. The marriage fell apart because it stopped working. Predictable take notwithstanding.
