Florence Pugh on why she got a buzzcut: ‘I wanted vanity out of the picture’

Florence Pugh got a buzzcut sometime just before the Met Gala (May 1st, this year). She rocked up to the Met Gala carpet wearing an elaborate headpiece, showcasing her buzzcut. I remember seeing some headlines about it, but it didn’t feel like a massive story, honestly. I mean that as a compliment to Florence – she’s got so much going on professionally and personally, so many dramas and so many movies, that her hair choices barely register. Plus, she’s sort of known for “wacky” style. She’s not precious about needing to look a certain way or always being camera-ready. Anyway, since she got a buzzcut, she’s grown it out a little bit to a punk pixie, basically. Pre-strike, she was putting “tints” in her hair according to her mood – one day there was a pink tint, another day there was an orange-yellow tint. Now Miss Flo is talking about why she made the dramatic hair choice in the first place:

Over two months after debuting a new dramatic hairstyle at this year’s Met Gala in May, Florence Pugh is opening up about why she opted for the buzzed-cut look.

“I purposefully chose to look like that. I wanted vanity out of the picture,” the Oppenheimer actress, 27, told Radio Times in an interview, per the Daily Mail. “Hollywood is very glamorous — especially for women — and it’s hard for an audience to see past that. Whenever I’ve not needed to be glam or have a full face of makeup, I fight to keep it that way. It helps the audience. Vanity is gone. The only thing that people can look at then is your raw face,” she said.

“Even at the beginning of my career, I was always fighting to control my image,” Pugh also said. “It helps me when I’m wearing less makeup because then I’m less of a sparkly thing on screen. I feel like I’m allowed to do ugly faces, like it’s more acceptable.”

Discussing Oppenheimer, Pugh told Radio Times, “It’s one of the biggest movies I’ve made. Chris’ approach is similar to indie movie-making. It reminded me of the early days when I was used to a fast-paced way of working — where, if you lost a scene from the day, you would lose it from the movie. When I walked on set, I couldn’t believe there was that similar, incredible adrenaline, which I hadn’t felt on a massive movie for a long time. It’s a wonderful thing to inject into a film set — believing in yourself and what you’re making.”

I get that, the idea that she wanted an off-duty style to de-pretty herself. There are some actresses who do that, especially if they’ve been working on back-to-back projects and/or they’ve just done a role where they have to dye their hair or wear a lot of makeup. I remember Kristen Stewart doing something similar after she did roles with a lot of wig work and dyed hair – she shaved it off and started fresh (plus it was for a role). The feminine urge to simplify, shave your head and go braless – it’s kind of universal, right? I mean, I never want to shave my head, but sometimes I do have the itch for a dramatic chop and a crazy dye job. Men will never understand how often women think “maybe I should cut off all my hair and never wear a bra again.”

PS… While the buzzcut wasn’t my jam, Flo’s current hair style (grown out a bit) looks amazing on her. It’s incredibly flattering.

  1. Circumstances had me have to shave my head. I was glad to see my head was not misshaped. I rocked bald till my hair started growing back and then instead of being brunette I went platinum blond. I still have it very short and blond. Don’t know if I would have done it without the circumstances. She is very daring to do it and she looks great.

I did it without a secondary reason at 50, just because I didn’t want to dye my hair anymore. My head is terribly misshapen but I just don’t care anymore.

      I am 42 and I had a buzzcut .
I have been having beautiful long curly hair for all my life, then in the last years I started cutting shorter and shorter until the buzzcut last year.
In the beginning I was puzzled, but then I was starting to play with it like: doing new makeup, or earring, and most of all I felt so much more confident I like the person who I am now.
I feel more badass than before.

      ❤️❤️❤️

She has the perfect face and hairline for this cut IMO. Some women just look better with short hair…Mariska Hargitay, Halle Berry, Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron.–to me, short hair suits these women best.

    • Haus of Cats says:

I would look like a discarded Q-tip if I cut my hair. I envy women who can rock that style.

      • AlpineWitch says:

I look like a discarded Q-tip and I’m rocking a buzzcut too, so practical! I spent 3 decades caring for waist-length hair, and I didn’t want to waste precious time doing that anymore.

Thanks to chemo, had to shave my head, twice. Once it grew back very grey, the second time dark and (still 2 years later) curly. Was cherry brown and straight before. I LOVED having a shaved head. I clung to my eyebrows and eyelashes with Latisse and just wore cool hats and Hermes scarves tied just so. So little work to maintain. I had my brothers shave it the second it started to fall out, and something about taking control like that made it easier to accept. Everyone should shave their head once in their life and see how freeing it is..

    • RMS. I agree it was freeing. Mines still short. Really short and easy to care for.

    • Soapboxpudding says:

I’m sorry you had to go through chemo twice and glad you’re still here with us. I shaved mine shortly after being diagnosed with RA at 19. Mine also came back in darker and curlier! And you’re right – it was freeing. I’ve felt less precious about my hair ever since. Did you, um, pet yourself a lot? I definitely had a habit of rubbing my own head. 😬

  4. Sunny O says:

Florence’s new haircut looks stunning on her.

  5. Laura says:

I love her, I love her hair, her style, and everything she does. That’s all.

  6. JanetDR says:

I recall the summer I decided to get a shorter cut. I kept seeing women with very short, very attractive hair and when I’d compliment them, every single one said that they shaved their head 3 months ago and hadn’t done anything since.
So I went to my hair guy and asked for it to look as though I had done that. He was so nervous that his hands were shaking, but he still didn’t get it short enough. Next time though!
    I haven’t had it that short in awhile…… 🤔

  7. Jais says:

Well, it helps when her raw face is stunning. Either way, Florence Pugh has really grown on me.

  8. Skyblue says:

I really wish more women would rock short hair. I’m sick of seeing the same sausage curls. Throughout the 80s and 90s, I would periodically rock short hair and loved it. Ashley Judd, Charlize Theron Halle Berry, Princess Di and Gwyneth Paltrow (sliding doors era)

  9. Normades says:

It really suits her. I hated that slicked back ‘wet’ look she was doing when she had longer hair.

  10. Mothra says:

Vanity out of the picture, aham.

    • Andrea says:

Somehow with the short hair she looks so much like Amber Heard to me! This cut suits her. She looks stunning.
