Page Six: The Sussexes ‘have a lot of logs in the fire. Production is one piece of the pie’

I keep forgetting that Rupert Murdoch’s vast empire has tentacles everywhere. Murdoch’s NewsCorp owns HarperCollins, one of the biggest publishing houses in the world. Prince Harry’s Spare was published by Penguin Random House though, as was Carley Fortune’s Meet Me at the Lake. So while HarperCollins doesn’t have intimate knowledge of the deal, News Corp is such a major player in the publishing world, they get insider book and publishing tips, plus they have an ax to grind about deals they missed out on. All of which means that I sort of halfway figured out why The Sun and Page Six (both owned by News Corp) are writing so many exclusives about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “buying the rights” to Fortune’s bestseller. That’s what The Sun claimed over the weekend, that the Sussexes bought the rights for $3 million. But Page Six’s sources claim that Netflix purchased the rights to Meet Me at the Lake specifically for the Sussexes. Page Six also has some almost positive things to say about the Sussexes’ business?

The ‘Meet Me at the Lake’ deal: The deal was signed in the past few weeks — and despite initial reports, the Sussexes didn’t buy the rights to the book, believed to be worth around $3 million. Instead, Netflix purchased it for them to produce under their Archewell Productions arm, we’re told. The book is “right up their alley,” said an insider. Plus, said the insider, “They love love stories and rom-coms.”

Archwell restructuring: The couple have been restructuring their team amid the departure of top producer Ben Browning, who was the head of internal content at Archewell Productions and oversaw the documentary. Page Six can also reveal they have parted ways with their talented senior vice-president of scripted television, Nishika Kumble. She lasted less than two years in the role.

Missing Hollywood? Asked whether Markle — whose show “Suits” is currently topping the charts on Netflix — has missed Hollywood, a friend said: “I’m not sure you can miss Hollywood when you’re one of the most famous women in the world!” Another Hollywood insider told us, “If you make money in Hollywood, you’re taken seriously.”

What WME is doing: With Markle having signed with Ari Emanuel’s powerhouse talent agency WME in May, a source also told Page Six that she and Harry “have a lot of logs in the fire. Production is one piece of the pie. It’s not all entirely shaped by Ari — they’ve had the deal with Netflix for a while. Everyone has criticized them, but they now have the right team and vision in place and execution is happening,” continued the source. “Meghan’s not doing a Reese [Witherspoon] or making acquisitions for herself… She doesn’t want to direct or act.”

A little bit of Goop: Someone who knows the couple told Page Six that Markle wants to be like a combination of famous women: “A bit of Reese, a bit of Gwyneth [Paltrow, founder of Goop] a bit of Princess Kate, a bit of Gloria Steinem.”

[From Page Six]

I hope WME is putting together a lot of deals and that they have a magnificent autumn rollout, because there have been too many negative business-related headlines happening for months. They need some good news and prominent deals. I still believe that Meghan should get some brand-endorsement deals! As for Meghan wanting to be a combo of Gwyneth, Gwyneth, Kate and Gloria Steinem… eh. That rings false to me, mostly because of the inclusion of Kate? Like, one of these things is not like the other. Meghan is a content-creator now and a brand unto herself, so yeah… maybe a little bit of Reese and Gwyneth. I also find it entirely possible that Netflix purchased the rights for the Sussexes, rather than the Sussexes buying the rights themselves.

Snuck in KKKate there like we wouldn’t notice..even she doesn’t want to be herself.

    • Seawell says:

I was like wow, this seems serious until that princess Kate😃😃

      • Maggie says:

Of course Netflix would buy the rights for our Sussexs – it keeps the movie at Netflix

    • Kelsey says:

      They really tried it! Lmaooooo!

    • B says:

I had to laugh because that is so TRUE!

    • Lizzie says:

Meghan has a vision for Archwell but the tabloids can’t figure it out so the just throw in a bunch of women. But for fun, in what way would anyone try to emulate Kate? She never held a job that wasn’t a facade because even the queen dragged her for not working. She is most likely a good mother, but the wails had a staff of 50 last year and we’ve never heard her speak of any of her child rearing philosophies except ‘early years are important’, to which the world mostly replied ‘duh’. Is she a role model as a wife? Well, admittedly they are apparently praised for throwing pillows at each other instead of vases and they do call each other names. Hopefully the nanny keeps the kids away from fighting and also, hopefully there is less fighting as they do not live together. And last but not least, does anyone, anywhere copy Kate’s fashions? Meghan’s sell out in a blink, but I have never seen anyone other than Kate, or another royal, wearing a ‘coatdress’.

    • BeanieBean says:

That just made me laugh! As if!!! I’m willing to bet the women Meghan admires & might want to pattern her life after (no idea if she even does) are completely unknown to the tab rats.

    • Sue E Generis says:

That last paragraph though. They are saying someone who knows Meghan said these things, meaning they are purportedly relaying things they’ve heard from her. Meghan would never express a desire to be like Kate. Impossible.

    • Missskitttin says:

Kate? Why would Meghan want to be like Kate? She’s an icon of lazy, obsolete and boring

  2. ThatsNotOkay says:

I don’t get how or why Netflix bought the rights, unless those are the terms of their deal or it’s a way to get around the strike.

And, yeah, any credibility the “source” had about who Meghan wants to be like flew out the window when they mentioned Kate. Meghan doesn’t want to be anything like Kate, and luckily, she isn’t.

    • Ameerah M says:

Those kinds of deals happen all the time. The strike would have nothing do with it since it does not involve SAG or the WGA.

      • ThatsNotOkay says:

Why would Netflix buy the rights and not Archwell? That’s my question. I’ve not heard of that.

    • Eurydice says:

@ThatsNotOkay – Netflix would buy the rights because they want control over the property. If there’s some split between Archewell and Netflix, then Netflix keeps the project.

      • Julie says:

Quick search shows that Netflix often buys the rights to a book. “Royalties can be paid to companies that acquire content or products, or paid to the original producer of the content or products,”. “Companies that produce films or TV shows sometimes sell their rights to another entity, which, depending on the deal structure, can then earn them royalties.”

It seem that its not about control but a procedure.

      • Eurydice says:

@Julie – buying rights is always about control, otherwise why call it “rights”? Netflix wants it first. They might produce it or never do anything with it or they may sell it to someone else, but that’s their choice now.

    • Lizzie says:

Because Archwell would sell the movie to another streamer when their Netflix contract ends.

  3. “Someone who knows the couple told page six”. Please what a load. I do hope the Sussexes are very busy working on all kinds of projects. Time will tell just what they have in store. Patiently waiting.

  4. girl_ninja says:

A bit of Princess Kate? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 No one wants to be Kate…even the homeless don’t want to be that lazy, racist stalker.

  5. Amy Bee says:

The insistence in including Kate in anything that has to do with Meghan is hilarious to me. That comment probably comes from a British person.

  6. Snuffles says:

I can’t wait to see what Meghan, Archewell and WME are cooking up!! And I agree they probably won’t start rolling out anything until after the Invictus Games.

  7. Becks1 says:

The inclusion of Kate made me laugh. I don’t think Meghan wants to be anything like Kate, white-knuckling a chair while she screeches about hormones.

I don’t know how all this works. Is it possible Netflix bought it as part of their production deal? Like part of the contract was that Netflix would buy the rights to books the Sussexes wanted to produce into movies, separate from their production money?

I do think the part about M not directing or acting is important, and will be overlooked by the BM of course. Meghan isn’t producing this movie so she can be the female lead. She’s producing it because she loves romance movies and wants to make one.

    • kirk says:

“Kate, white-knuckling a chair while she screeches about hormones.” 😂😂😂
Thanks for the image; had forgotten about that memorable scene.

  8. Cel2495 says:

Lol a little bit of Kate? lol! Even Kate doesn’t want to be herself and is always copying someone else specially Meghan… why on earth she would want to be like that non factor vapid good for nothing woman? 😂

    • HennyO says:

The one day they report that H&M have nothing going on for them, business wise, that they basically are sitting in the house doing nothing. The next day they have a lot on their plate (which was already clear in the WME’s statement, so nothing new here). I mean, pic a lie, pic a struggle and stay with that.

  9. CheChe says:

Kate news is always 3 lies and 1 attempt at truth. Without Meghan’s name where is the interest in this person?

  10. MsIam says:

Yeah that last line is definitely a lie. Besides, I personally think Meghan wants to be like Oprah and Tyler too, people she knows and trusts.

  11. Eurydice says:

Kate and Gloria Steinem in the same sentence – that must be a first.

I haven’t read the book, but the synopsis sounds very Hallmark meets Norah Ephron. If Netflix paid for the rights, then there’s commitment on their part. It’ll be interesting to see how the project comes together – I wish them all the best.

  12. Boxy Lady says:

Oh puh-lease! The only things Kate does well are birthing babies and clinging to the idea of being queen one day.

  13. Marley says:

That headline is a mixed metaphor. And isn’t the expression “irons in the fire”? But I don’t know why I’m expecting great literature from a tabloid.

    • Eurydice says:

Yes, that struck me right away – it is “irons in the fire.” And now I’m trying to picture H&M trying to bake pies over a wood fire…

    • BeanieBean says:

That was my first thought, too, it’s ‘irons in the fire’ not logs!

    • Lily says:

Irons in a fire is a very British expression.

  14. Marivic says:

No, Meghan never wanted to be anything like Kate. It’s most likely the other way around. Meghan is not vacuous at all like Kate. These writers know in their heart of hearts that they are lying big time. They just want to insert Kate’s name in every Meghan piece. Kate won’t be read if not without Meghan’s name in an article. Fact.

  15. HeatherC says:

    HAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

    Thanks for the laugh.

I don’t believe Meghan in anyway wants to be a “little bit of William’s wife.”

  16. Asgrl says:

If Netflix bought the rights, I’m fine with that. That’s like using someone else’s
/the banks money to make what is hopefully a solid investment.

The inclusion of Kate…LMAO. Please what is there to emulate? Kate is not even financially independent of her toad of a husband. If he divorces her, she’s screwed! Back to living with her parents in a bedroom above the garage. They sure as heck won’t let her take her kids.

That’s who Meghan wants to emulate? Jokes!

  17. ABritGuest says:

Lol try to make it believable Page six- Meghan wants to be like princess Kate just stood out as complete BS especially after listing various accomplished women.

Anyway hope H&M /Archewell do have some exciting news to announce after invictus. I agree with a poster above that this book sounds super cheesy/Hallmarkey so hope the talent they recruit can make it good & not just standard fare

  18. Jay says:

“Markle wants to be like a combination of famous women: “A bit of Reese, a bit of Gwyneth [Paltrow, founder of Goop] a bit of Princess Kate, a bit of Gloria Steinem.”

One of those things is not like the others, lol!

The article makes this seem like a bit of a dig, but why wouldn’t you want to be compared to Reese Witherspoon’s production company? She’s produced some hits, and her book recos have become just as influential as Oprah’s. And while I don’t love Gwyneth, she’s got an audience and a strong brand. Gloria Steinem is still putting in the good work, too! Poor Keen – that list only shows how little she has to say for herself after all these years.

    • Lily says:

Reese just sold her company for $900 million dollars. I can see Harry and Meghan wanting to be Reese. This deal with Netflix owning the rights will allow them to get their feet wet in the production waters while having the support of Netflix instead of going solo for everything.

  19. sadie says:

Netflix and Archewell likely have what is called a “first look” deal. Meaning anything they want to acquire, they go to Netflix to see if they want to partner with them on it first. If they do, they move forward, if they don’t, Archewell is free to shop it around other studios.

Typically, when first look deal happens, the production company finds work (books, etc) that they want to buy and bring it to the studio (Netflix) and the studio finances it.

This is what happened to me with a production company that had a first look deal with Netflix. Production company approached me, had the Netflix backing within 48 hours and a star put in place over a weekend. It can happen very fast!

  20. Like KATE? 😂🤣😂🤣🤣, STFU. Megan WORKS, has always worked and will continue to work. Kate preens, prances, shakes her wiglets whilst giving either a simpering smile, or a massive Jim Carey mouth open fake laugh. She let’s others do the actual work, then just adds her name and takes full credit

  21. QuiteContrary says:

Gwyneth is a brand, to be sure, but I can’t see Meghan wanting to emulate Gwyneth’s snake oil nonsense.

I’d say that Meghan is quite happy to forge her own path with Harry. But she does value mentorship, so these are the four women I’d say she’d be inspired by: Gloria Steinem (for obvious reasons), her friend Serena Williams (for her business acumen and joyful mothering), her own mother Doria, and Glennon Doyle (for her work on mental health and brand-building).

Meghan is a woman’s woman. She respects and celebrates other women. I really like that about her.

  22. Eliora says:

They almost had me believing this until the line about Kate. I can not fathom under any circumstances, why anyone would want to be like Kate. Even a little bit. Kate’s life seems like that of a sad goldfish devioud of love or true purpose. Seems more of a cautionary tale than an aspirational one.

  23. Over it says:

Well that’s a hard thing for Meghan to do . How can she be a bit like Kate when Kate doesn’t even know who she is supposed to be , steely by day and keen peacemaker by night . All the while stuck between copying the late queen , princess Diana and Meghan. Ring me when princess buttons picks our who she really is .

  24. Over it says:

Oh I forgot the most important thing. Meghan has clearly grown tired of being loved out loud and being her husband favorite smell. She wants to be like Kate . She wants her husband to look at her when she gets near and touches him and says with his eyes and actions, don’t touch this . Yup . I can totally see Meghan trading in all her love and respect and adoration from her husband to being treated like a tic by Kate’s husband

  25. Catherine says:

Archewell and Netflix have partnership but Archewell is a brand new production company. Netflix may be providing the initial capital outlay. That was likely the contractual arrangement. Netflix will retain the rights to the project and will likely get a greater percentage of the profit. It’s likely that Netflix paid for the production cost of the Harry and Meghan doc. In addition to whatever they paid the Sussexes up front. It’s an essentially an investment by Netflix because they believe the project will be profitable. So they will make that money back and more.

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

Catherine, I doubt that Netflix would have handed them the entire amount up front. I suspect they get it over time with their projects. Netflix buying the rights means it keeps the rights to any movie made, so the Sussexes couldn’t go to a different streamer. It’s a business decision that’s done all of the time.

  26. Lizzie says:

I hope they give podcasting another try with a different platform. I am a big fan of Kathleen Madigan’s podcast (pubcast). It’s just her every week talking about things that interest her. I think a weekly podcast of H&M chatting about what interested them that week or is coming up in the next week would be a smash. Naturally avoiding anything political or royal, it wouldn’t be too hard to come up with an hour each week. What do they laugh over, watch on tv, like to cook or eat, what new discoveries does Harry still find in the US, cute stories about their kids and pets, what are they think about stories in the news – did they watch the Murdaugh trial? H&M are each engaging and love to laugh, I think it would be a hit. Also, I would really, really love for another successful podcast from them after the idiot from spotify’s comments. (just let W&K try to copy them LOL).

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

Lizzie, I don’t see H&M giving up details of the personal life. They’ve worked hard to make sure that personal stays personal.

I think we’ll see another season of Archetypes on a different platform. Maybe it will fall about a year after the first season.

    • bisynaptic says:

I agree. I think a podcast series discussing each of their projects—past, present, and future (ie, Invictus, Sentebale, UN Women, Archewell, etc.), would be a big hit.

  27. Beverley says:

Meghan wants to be like Kkkhate, a desperate Pick Me, vacuous, lazy, mean-spirited with no fashion sense…and unloved by her husband??? WTF??? Is it Opposite Day?

  28. Allison says:

Didn’t the author of sited article feel ridiculous grouping Kate with multi-dimensional women?

  29. I think I’ll wait until they make an announcement themselves. this all sounds like water cooler gossip to me. Yes, the author has posted that she is working with Netflix and Archewell but that’s all. The other details are conjecture. Meghan knows who she is. She has for a while. What would she gain by wanting to be a little bit like 3 white Hollywood women and one vacuous princess? Nothing. She has her own lane and she knows it.

  30. Lily says:

I could imagine Meghan wanting to vibe the spirit of Diana but not Catherine. Catherine is too tame.
