Natasha Lyonne on uncomfortable shoes, clothes: ‘I won’t play that game anymore’

I really like Natasha Lyonne and am so happy that she’s gotten a big career boost over the past few years. I love both Russian Doll and Poker Face and can’t wait to see what she ends up doing next. I also love her style. I follow her on Instagram and she does a lot of fashion-related posts. To me, she’s one of those women who always looks really cool in whatever she’s wearing. She even makes crazy glasses look cool. Right now, Natasha is the face of Old Navy’s newest campaign, and in the promotion for it, she has some thoughts about looking stylish while still being comfortable.

??For Natasha Lyonne, comfort and style go hand in hand.

The Poker Face star — who fronts Old Navy’s newest campaign, launching today — knows how to turn it up for a red carpet or a night out, but always in something that makes her feel confident and completely herself.

“I really like being able to walk,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively of how she builds an outfit that’s “authentically Natasha.” “The thing I like the least about a look is not being able to move in my shoes. I find that so many people go to award shows and spend the whole night complaining about their shoes or clothes. I won’t play that game anymore. I’m too seasoned.”

Well, no lies detected there! I knew she was awesome. I like getting dressed up for a wedding or party but my days of wearing something that I feel like I can’t eat in or shoes that I can’t walk in are long over. I got a pair of Rothy’s for Christmas in 2019 and have never switched back to any kind of heel other than the occasional wedge (sorry, Kaiser!) with a dress in the summertime. I’ve also bought a bunch of comfy dresses with pockets over the past year or so, including two that I got from Old Navy. Oh, pocket dresses, where have you been all my life?

Anyway, much like Natasha, I find that the older I get, the more I just want to be comfortable in whatever I’m wearing in general. At this point in my life, I know what I feel comfortable in and don’t feel the pressure to deviate. Good for Natasha for keeping it real, as always. I wish I was able to rock a good pair of heels or crazy sunglasses, though! If that’s your thing, then right on, that’s awesome! May we all wear what we feel comfortable in and rock whatever we want to with confidence.

If the Pandemic taught me one thing it’s that uncomfortable high heels and clothing are not worth it. I dress as comfortably as possible for work and when I go out. Now if I have a formal event, that requires some work. Life is too short.

I spent a year photographing everything I wore, and it was life-changing. My goal when it comes to clothes is “looks appropriate for the occasion, feels like pajamas.”

As far as shoes go, even when I was dirt poor, expensive shoes were my only choice (AAA width will do that), so I had black, brown, and sneakers. Now, my go- to brands are Tieks and Superga.

Natasha is fabulous and I love her even more for this.

I am legit hoping this becomes a thread of everyone dropping their favorite comfy shoes. Bonus excitement for wide width!

      • Amy T says:

@TeamAwesome – The great thing about Tieks is that they stretch, so you might want to see if they work for you. They are not cheap – I got my first pair because someone got the wrong length and gave them to my sister and they fit me perfectly. That was in 2017 and I’m still wearing them. I’d recommend not getting the glittery ones – the glitter tends to flake. The matte lasts forever.

I just bought a pair of Sorel Kinetic sneakers and they are life changing. I’ve had chronic foot problems and constant, daily pain for several years, and it’s actually a pleasure to walk around in these. They are both supportive and cushioned. I’ve had a hard time finding a shoe that can do both those things. Even my balance is better.

Dansko in the winter, Birkenstock in the summer. As a larger person with large, wide feet, I find I just wear out everything else too fast.

hear hear. I actually put some of my really lovely shoes (a black beaded Prada Mary Jane which might be the prettiest shoe in the world & a lovely vintage Chanel) in frame boxes and hung them in my closet (its a pretty cool little closet) I’m not going to wear them again but I didn’t want them to sit in a box so now they are the art pieces they were meant to be just no longer for feet

I used to collect very loud super funky heels that I would wear to work events that I was hosting… I don’t wear any of them anymore but I display them all on a shelf because they’re art!

At this point I view high heels as a recreational drug… You can make the choice to do that for a night, but you got to know you’re going to pay the price for days or even weeks afterwards.

Adore Lyonne! Her whole vibe is so cool and her style is unique. I especially love how she’s producing for herself now, amplifying her voice and making success happen. Fantastic.

Re the shoes, I got plantar fasciitis during the lockdown years and had to switch up to shoes that were kinder to my feet. Birkenstocks are my friends now, and I’ve had decent luck with Teva too. I’m fortunate I work in a more artsy sphere and I don’t have to worry about whether they’re “appropriate for office.”

“I’m too seasoned.” From now on, this is the only way I will talk about aging.

  7. Sass says:

Hell yes. I jumped on the full comfort thing earlier this year. I’m done with high heels. Most I’ll do now is a kitten heel.

I noticed upthread someone is hoping for comfy shoe recs. I love the Italian loafer brand Piedaterre, I have a pair of hot pink velvet ones I bought in Venice this summer. Another similar possibly more accessible brand is Birdies. I have high arches and the support in their shoes is heavenly.

  8. Celina says:

    Slums of Beverly Hills forever!

I think she’s very cool and the Old Navy ads are good but no amount of cool can hide the fact that the Old Navy pants look really cheap.
