Zooey Deschanel & Jonathan Scott got engaged in Scotland, her ring is offbeat

In 2019, Zooey Deschanel started divorce proceedings against her second husband, Jacob Pechenik. Just weeks later, she confirmed her relationship with “Property Brother” Jonathan Scott. I looked at my previous coverage and I stand by it: “I think this is a downgrade for Zooey.” For the record, I don’t really have an issue with the Property Bros, Jonathan and Drew Scott, I just feel like they’ve been forced down everyone’s throats and they’re just not interesting or compelling in any way. Which is why I’ve mostly ignored Zooey’s relationship with Jonathan – I’m always like “ugh, this again.” It’s been four years of that and now they’re engaged. I am incandescent with rage!! No, not really. Good for them.

Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott are engaged! The Physical actress and Property Brothers host are ready to wed, after four years of dating.

Scott popped the question on Sunday during a family trip to Scotland, PEOPLE exclusively confirms. Deschanel’s two children — daughter Elsie, 8, and son Charlie, 6 — played a role in the special moment. Everyone was overjoyed and Deschanel, of course, said “Yes!”

In a photo shared with PEOPLE, the couple are seen posing in front of the rugged Scottish scenery at the foot of a stone castle and smiling. Deschanel holds up her hand adorned with her incredibly unique ring, set with clear, pink and purple stones in a flower pattern.

The couple also announced the news in a joint post on their Instagram accounts on Monday afternoon. “Forever starts now” read the simple caption, which was accompanied by some smiling heart emojis and an infinity symbol.

Proposing in Scotland holds a special significance for Jonathan, who has often incorporated his heritage into key moments in his life. At his brother Drew’s 2018 wedding, for example both men wore kilts for the ceremony. (The twins’ father, Jim, emigrated from the country to Canada as a teen.)

I’d just like to note that he proposed in a place which was special TO HIM and not her. But, on the other hand, he seems to adore her children and he’s embracing the stepfather role completely and that’s nice. As for the ring… it’s too blurry to really see the quality, but it looks more like costume jewelry rather than an engagement ring. Still, Zooey is offbeat and the ring is offbeat, so maybe she loves it (look at her face though, I have my doubts). Did you also realize that this will be Zooey’s third marriage? Good for her though – lil’ “infinity” symbol when you’re marrying for the third time, I absolutely LOVE IT.

I like the ring. Congrats to them.

  2. Normades says:

I’m also a quirky girl (looove those snl skits especially the one where Zooey comes on as Mary Kate Olsen) so I love the ring. I have no idea who this dude is but their styles really don’t seem to mesh.

  3. Kokiri says:

    Can’t stand the property brothers.

Plus his head is so large?! WTF?

    Whatever, have a happy marriage.

    • Ana170 says:

The Scott brothers are very tall. Their heads are in proportion to their bodies. Drew and Jonathan have gotten increasingly annoying over the years but that’s par for the course for HGTV stars. They have to be funny and after a while it becomes forced. That said, Jonathan is great at his job. Plus he apparently really went through some stuff with his first marriage so it’s good to see he’s doing well personally.

  4. MsIam says:

I thought they had already gotten married but I guess that was the other brother. Congrats to them.

    • tealily says:

I was thinking that they had too. They seem like an odd match, but at least they both have their own money. I wish them well.

  5. Shawna says:

I wonder what Ben Gibbard (husband 1) is thinking today. The burn level in his divorce-era Death Cab for Cutie lyrics was so bad the guitarist Chris Walla left the band over it.

    • Normades says:

      Tell me more…

      • Shawna says:

The album is Kintsugi. Apparently, Walla thought his mean lyrics that were probably about her were ungentlemanly, and Gibbard responded by saying “who cares what the f* the guitarist thinks about lyrics?” Walla partly left to take more time for producing / sound engineering, but I think this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. For instance, in the song Ingenue: “Ingénue, what will become of you? / When age’s glacial pace / Cuts valleys into your face / The currency of being twenty-three / It will remain the same / Just by another name / Oh, Ingénue / What will you do?” In the song Black Sun, there’s “How could something so fair / Be so cruel / When this black sun revolved / Around you!” And Little Wanderer suggests what happens—all the time apart with her doing her own work and him touring: “You’re my wanderer, little wanderer / Off across the sea / You’re my wanderer, little wanderer /. Won’t you wander back to me? / Back to me.” I can see Walla’s point. He’s a really nice guy (I got to chat with him a few times), and Gibbard’s lyrics can sometimes be so bitter as to be bordering on some incel talking points. (I’m saying this, but no mistake, I love DCFC.)

      • Normades says:

        Thanks

    • Cait says:

But I DO like Dave Depper.

      • Shawna says:

I haven’t seen them on tour since Walla left, so I’m really interested in seeing him live!

      • Banana Phone says:

I have it on loosely good authority that Gibbard banging Walla’s wife for years was a pretty big factor too, and a lot of the lyrics from around his departure & subsequent fucking off to Scandinavia (or wherever they moved to) do seem to support that. I’m told it was an open secret, to the point that random riggers knew about it, so ungentlemanly would be a pretty huge understatement for the whole messy mess. I’m no fan of hers, but Ben definitely seems like a Grade A prick no matter how you slice it.

      • Normades says:

        The tea 🤓

    • Bex says:

Um no Chris left because Ben got together with and married Rachel Demi (who dated Chris Walla).

  6. Cait says:

Yes! She was married to Ben Gibbard of DCFC.

  7. Nerd says:

I guess I was of the opposite opinion. I’m okay with the Propetty Brothers. They were a good lazy day watch for someone who likes to add possible projects on their list of things to try and do. I hadn’t really seen her as an actress that wasn’t annoying to me. Her voice drives me crazy, same with her sister. Their voices sound as if they are on a heavy dose of Dramamine that is meant to anyone listen to sleep. I had seen them do a game show and other things and really liked their interactions with each other. Their personalities seem different but they work well with each other, so I’m hoping that they are truly happy and have a long life together. I love the quirkiness of the ring, it’s different but pretty.

    • HoofRat says:

They’re both musical, so that’s a big connecting point. (CBS Sunday Morning ran a clip of the brothers and their family harmonizing on a Christmas carol that’s really very pretty).

  8. AnneL says:

I like the Property Brothers actually. They seem like nice guys and they do good work, even if I do find it cookie cutter sometimes. I don’t know much about ZD but she’s cute and quirky. They’ve been together quite a while and apparently he’s good with her kids, so obviously they didn’t rush into this which is good.

    Congrats to them.

  9. L4Frimaire says:

Dang this post is trés sauvage. I had no idea she’s been married twice before and had two kids. I’ve watched the Property Brothers for ages and they seem nice and I like a lot of their projects so good for them. Yeah the ring is not that great, looks like costume jewelry, but hopefully she’ll get a beautiful solitaire at some point. Hope they don’t have some cheesy wedding special or do some Flip or Flop style show together. Anyway congratulations and much happiness to them.

  10. Libra says:

I like the ring but it doesn’t fit right.

    • GemGirl says:

He may not have known her ring size.

Page Six reporting it’s a 3.5ct center stone but I don’t think so. Looks like small, individually set purple gemstones (maybe sapphires?) shaped like a flower with diamond flowers on either side. I’m guessing the flowers go all the way around and the visible pink gemstone (going again with sapphire) is part of a pink flower. Pretty ring!

  11. Kirsten says:

I realize I obviously don’t know them personally, but they seem like such a weird match.

  12. K. Tate says:

Looks like the grown up version of the “tulip rings” I collected as a tween!

  13. Andrea says:

The ring is ridiculous, but yet, so her. I like vintage rings myself and that wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea either. I do applaud the uniqueness. I have seen so many rings that look like so many others; no originality.

I cannot believe she has been married 2 times and is on #3. She is a year older than me and I haven’t found husband #1 yet. That amount of marriages gives me Kaley Cuoco vibes or Jennifer Lopez. She must fall hard and fast and discuss marriage quickly with every partner.

I am indifferent regarding the Property brothers. It DOES seem like they have been together forever. Remind me someone..did they get together before the pandemic or during? She looks ridiculously happy but so did Jlo and Kaley with all her men too. Time will tell with these two.

  14. ama1977 says:

I just really want to know how you go into your third marriage before the age of 45 with a straight face and proclaim, “THIS, this is the forever one.” I mean.

However, they seem like inoffensive people and I appreciate Zooey’s commitment to her whole aesthetic, so I wish them well. Maybe third time is the charm after all!

    • Lucky Charm says:

My cousin was on marriage #3 at age 29! But apparently the third time really was the charm. They’ve been happily married for almost 30 years and have two great kids.

I’ve watched all of the Property Brothers various shows here and there and think they do great work. I think I’d choose them if I ever had any of the HGTV people work on my house.

  15. Well Wisher says:

Congratulations to the couple and the family!!!

  16. VilleRose says:

Jonathan has been married once before by the way (from 2007-2010), so for neither of them it is their first marriage. I don’t really care about either of them strongly, I thought Jonathan felt very strongly about having his own kids at one point but maybe being a stepdad is enough? Zoey is in her early 40s so not impossible to get pregnant but I imagine with 2 kids already, she may not want more.

  17. Jenn says:

“maybe she loves it (look at her face though, I have my doubts)”: To be fair, her face has been getting pretty hard to read lately, haha.

Yeah, the Property Brothers are fine. They sound like they’ve always wanted to be famous—not necessarily as realtors—but they also seem earnest and grateful and all that, and stable, and unproblematic. Zooey seems like a pretty cynical person, so it makes sense she’d pair up with someone with a positive, sunny outlook. Which is sweet! I love it.
