Margaret Qualley on getting married: ‘One day I want kids, and I’m not there yet’

Margaret Qualley covers the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar, in what was supposed to be promotion for her role in Drive-Away Dolls, a solo directorial effort from Ethan Coen. The film was made and set for release this fall, then the SAG-AFTRA strike happened and the release got pushed back. I also get the impression that Margaret had only done part of her interview when the strike was called, so she never did a second interview. There’s a lot of filled-in stuff where an actor’s quotes would usually go. I’ve read Qualley’s interviews before and she’s always come across as… kind of flighty, but I’m not saying that in a mean way. She has an artistic temperament, she’s not a grounded “I have a daily system, set goals and a ten-year plan” kind of person. She just wants to act and be an artist. The most interesting part of the interview, to me, was when she talked about how she tried to persuade Jack Antonoff to marry her when they were first seeing each other. They married in August even though the woman has zero game.

On Jack Antonoff: “I am so happy that I found my person. And it’s real. It’s amazing. It’s the best feeling in the world. I’m so excited and so at ease all at once.”

She always wanted to get married and have kids. In the very early days of their relationship, she flew to Paris to walk in Virginie Viard’s Fall 2021 couture show for Chanel, which she closed in a white high-necked, long-sleeved wedding dress, tossing a bouquet into the audience for the finale. Qualley took the opportunity to flood Antonoff with pictures of herself as a bride. “I had this huge crush on him and it was just like, ‘What do you think?’ ” Not long after, they visited a mutual friend who had just had a child. “I’m holding the baby,” she says, as she mimes cradling the newborn, “and I’m just like, ‘What do you think?’ ”

The reality of being married and planning a future: “Until about a month before I met Jack, I never had any furniture. I would always have these sh-tty little apartments and move around from one place to another with a mattress on the floor and an Ikea lamp. I never made a home at all. I didn’t care; I cared about movies. I would use my sister’s basement in L.A. as a spot to keep my things. But I didn’t invest in that part of my life. It’s really exciting now to be making a home and to have something to care for.” She’s trying, though, not to plan too far ahead. “I just want to do everything with Jack. One day I want kids, and I’m not there yet, and I want to keep doing movies. And that’s about all I know.”

Credit to the women who came before her: “The roles are more diverse. I’m getting less scripts about girlfriends and wives than actresses of my mom’s generation did.” She will watch her own movies. “I like to know. I also like to prepare myself for the worst. I like to make sure that what I’m feeling adds up.”

No, she and Jack had only started dating and she was sending him photos of herself in a wedding dress with the message “what do you think?” OMG!!! And holding the baby too, although I understand that one a little bit more. I actually believe those “what do you think about babies/do you want kids” conversations should start early in a relationship, especially if one or both parties feels strongly about the subject. But the wedding dress thing is bonkers! LOL. She’s lucky she’s cute, because that would have been enough to send most men running for the hills.

I try, but I’ll never get over how this woman did a huge pap stroll for Shia after FKA Twigs sued him for abuse. It was over the top, it was gross & it was so public. Then, after her break up with Shia, she publicly shared FKA’s story & said she believed FKA…but wouldn’t testify in the case to anything she knows when FKA Twigs asked her.

He is significantly older (10 years) and she comes across as rather immature. We’ll see if this random match makes it past the honeymoon phase…

She’s a phenomenal actress, but she strikes me as being very immature for someone who’s nearly 30.

Check out her Kenso (Kenzo?) ad on utube. She is a quirky, fantastic dancer. She also danced on Fosse. Curious why she concentrates now on acting when her whole background training is in dance.

That was her?!!!! I never knew that. Wow. Like You said, It’s curious why shes so focused on acting when she’s a trained dancer too… Maybe an injury?

Isn’t it fascinating how a plate of good food can transform a dull day into a vibrant one? Good food isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience. It’s that first sip of coffee in the morning, the crunch of a perfectly baked croissant, and the warmth of a bowl of soup on a chilly evening. It’s like a culinary hug that speaks a language of flavors. Every bite seems to whisper, “Hey, it’s going to be alright.” So, why not indulge in a little gastronomic therapy?
