Donald Trump threw a tantrum at the NYC courthouse, but will he be Speaker?

During the Biden administration, I can really go weeks, even months, without watching MSNBC. I just have faith in President Biden and Vice President Harris. I don’t have that pit in the bottom of my stomach every day like I did during the Trump years. All of which to say, there’s been so much happening this week, I’ve been back to watching MSNBC and the storylines are all converging. Donald Trump was in New York for his civil fraud trial, being prosecuted by New York AG Letitia James and her office. The judge already handed down a limited gag order on Trump, but that didn’t stop Trump from doing another unhinged press conference yesterday outside of the courtroom:

She covered it all – the ranting about the judge, the tantrum about how he’d rather be in Iowa, claiming that he was being forced into court (he wasn’t), then storming out and flying back to Mar-a-Lago. He’s big mad, mostly because Letitia James is coming after his reputation as a “rich guy,” and the whole house of cards is collapsing. Meanwhile, Trump’s House Republican sycophants are convinced that Trump should be the new Speaker of the House, following their hilarious success in ousting Kevin McCarthy. Trump was asked about that before he waddled back to Florida too, and he said:

“A lot of people have been calling me about speaker,” Trump said Wednesday morning outside a New York City courthouse for the third day of New York Attorney General Letitia James’ $250 million civil fraud trial against him. “All I can say is we will do whatever is best for the country and other Republican Party and people.” He added, however, that he is focused on winning back the presidency.

[From NBC News]

Chris Hayes made two good points last night on his show – one, that Trump would actually hate being Speaker because it’s a detail-oriented job with a lot of paperwork, and Trump famously hates paperwork. Two, if Trump became Speaker, it would actually remind Americans about how much they f–king hate this incompetent, fascist, white supremacist loser. Alas, it won’t happen. It will probably be Scalise or Jordan.

No, he will not become Speaker of the House, but he will become an inmate…
This will be the best thing for the country.

  2. Seraphina says:

OHHHHHH PLEAZZZZZZZZZZZZZEEEE be Speaker of the House. PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZEEE.

    • Tiffany:) says:

He’s such a threat to democracy. He might crash and burn as speaker, but he should NEVER hold any position of power because he’s corrupt and anti democratic.

      • Naye In VA says:

But Republicans are already a major threat and the way they are behaving is ineffective to our democracy as well. Making blithering lying Trump the speaker will show at least those people who somehow think Biden is “just as bad” that no, he could never be THIS bad. There are still too many people who think Biden hasn’t done enough for them

      • Seraphina says:

He is all talk. Just like his is all talk about how much he worth. He doesn’t have the mental aptitude to try and be Speaker of the House nor does he have the work ethic for it. Serving for the greater good is a foreign concept for him.

      • Tiffany:) says:

No, he’s not all talk and he’s not like other republicans. He tried to over throw an election! He incited violence on Jan 6th!

  3. snappyfish says:

It won’t be Jordan. Everyone on the hill hates him. I would love to see him be the ‘nominee’ as it will assure Jeffries getting the gavel. Which would be a v v good thing

  4. Lucy says:

No! He won’t! Stop freaking out about it! There aren’t 218 people who will vote for him. He was floated last January, before he had 91 counts against him, and it didn’t go anywhere. There’s too many republicans running for office next year in districts that are competitive (14), vs the whopping 8 who ousted McCarthy. The “moderates” (there are just R that are more polite than the freedom ppl) aren’t going to torpedo themselves for this.

Also republicans have a rule against having a speaker with pending felonies. They would have to vote to throw that out, and again, there isn’t a majority ready to stick their neck out for the guy who pays for primaries against people they worked with, doesn’t pay his bills, and demands absolute loyalty. They’re going to keep the rule to save face.

    • Murphy says:

When have the republicans ever enforced their “rules” on Trump??

      • Lucy says:

That is a good point, but this is a passive rule. They can just point at it and shrug and not make moves to overturn it. Most of the other rules he broke were done by him speaking, or doing shady money shit. He can’t just show up and declare himself the candidate and everyone will go along with it. Plus he’s hiding because he’s about to be stripped of a lot of money and properties from him civil NY trial.

    • Truthiness says:

Exactly, rules would have to be changed to allow someone with indictments and those clowns aren’t unified enough to get anything done right now. Trump doesn’t qualify.

    • Vivica says:

I wonder if this means that J6 indictments against JJ are just around the corner.

    • Renae says:

Lucy, I don’t think they can vote to change that rule till they have a Speaker…..so Catch-22 for them.
Neither of the 2 currently up for Speaker will have an easy time getting the votes…so there is that.

    • lucy2 says:

Yeah this idea is being floated by a very small amount of loonies, it’s not going to happen.

    • pottymouth pup says:

he’s also under felony indictment and the GOP conference has a rule saying no one indicted for a felony punishable by more than two years in prison can serve in leadership. Of course, the GOP is nothing if not hypocrites so . . .

  5. ariel says:

As a resident of Louisiana, i would like to say Scalise is garbage. Jordan may be worse.
I kind of want to go to their districts, and the districts of the crazies- Boebert, green, gaetz- and embarrass the voters there who either voted for them, or didn’t vote at all.

    How are they not embarrassed.

Both senators from my state are garbage- kennedy (aka foghorn leghorn) and cassidy- but i can at least say i vote in every election and certainly never cast a vote for either of those racist yucks.

Seriously, citizens of the united states voted these people INTO OFFICE.
Are they happy about their choice?

    • olliesmom says:

I don’t live in Louisiana, but I agree that Scalise is garbage. He was shot and he still didn’t even try to do anything about guns. In contrast Gabby Giffords was shot while in office and has made gun control now her life’s work.

    • Naye In VA says:

I think “didn’t vote” and “voted for gun rights” sums up how these people get in

    • Megan says:

Scalise describes himself as David Duke without the baggage. That really says everything you need to know about him.

      • ariel says:

When david duke was elected to the state senate i was in my teens (late 80s) but i did not live here. I assumed that he represented some backwoods parish (county) but nope, come to find out that he represented Jefferson Parish – a painfully gerrymandered bit of the state- which is essentially the suburbs of New Orleans: Metairie/Kenner areas.
They are basic “white flight” suburbs.
        Its horrific.
Racism seems to trump (no pun intended) all matter of good sense and decency.

  6. LadyE says:

the ONLY reason why I would want Trump to be Speaker is to watch McConnell get his vengeance with whatever gets sent over to the Senate from Trump’s House “negotiations” (hahaha sigh eyeroll, lord the legislation that would come out of the House with Trump as speaker smh).

I can’t stand McConnell, but the man is a legislative heavyweight, he knows the processes inside and out, knows all the procedural tricks, and hates Trump so so much. He is deeply cowardly (see Jan 6th backtracking all over), but I actually think he’d relish using his legislative prowess, even as minority leader, to humiliate Trump. Reconcilliation negotiations would be: WH, Schumer, McConnell, and Jeffries. Bet.

  7. ML says:

You guys might be right about if Trump were to become Speaker it would show how horrible he is at the job…My gut reaction is still HELL NO NOT HIM. President was bad enough, please don’t let the megalomaniacal narcissist anywhere near power and a mike. Plus if the President and VP were killed—he’d be the president. Again. Please No.

    • Swack says:

Which may give some of his crazies the idea to go out and assassinate Biden and Harris.

      • BlueNailsBetty says:

Exactly. While the thought of trump being Speaker is pretty hilarious the bottom line is the threat of assassination of Biden and Harris would be magnified by about a million. And I do not trust the Secret Service to keep them safe if that happened.

      • JEB says:

And we cannot count on the MAGA infested Secret Service to protect POTUS/VP.

But back to the reality of Trump as speaker-as someone else mentioned, he’s been indicted on felonies that carry 2+ year sentences, so by current rule he’s disqualified. Whew.

And of course after 3 days of grandstanding he ran back to Mar-A-Shithole because he got the gag order. Probably at his lawyers’ insistence. And he’s terrified of jail.

  8. olliesmom says:

Why, oh why, is this exhausting clown not in jail already?

  9. Lizzie Bathory says:

He’s going to wind up broke & in prison, which he deserves. But I love how mad he is that he’s finally being exposed as a fraud & a loser. After all he put us through, I’m savoring his misery.

  10. lanne says:

He’s under indictment for multiple felonies. According to House laws, he is not eligible for the job.

  11. Chantal says:

Agree with the comments above. Bc if there’s anyone who could and would shut down the federal govt, it would be this moron (apologies to other morons).

OTOH, he would probably be so busy going after different state attorneys general and other perceived enemies, he would be too busy to f up the fed govt too badly. He’d likely get impeached again and fired as Speaker but I’m not sure if he’s even eligible. But we know how the Repubs like to change rules and laws to benefit themselves. These incompetent and greedy Rs are determined to burn everything down. Its infuriating that we pay these morons $174,000/yr plus benefits and not only do they refuse to do their jobs, increasingly incompetent Congresspeople keep getting elected. We have to vote Dems in for control of the presidency and both houses of Congress bc with the inmates running the asylum in Congress, this country is in trouble.

  12. aquarius64 says:

The Speaker of the House of Representatives is 2nd in line to the US presidency. Despite being a former president Trump would still be down the line in the US Order of Preeminence with the Speakership. Biden will still outrank him.

  13. Renae says:

I liked Fetterman’s quote about the situation:
“Replacing one d**K with another d*”k is not a solution. We are one DNA test away from Jerry Springer”

  14. BlueNailsBetty no says:

Sidenote to all of this but slightly relevant to the court case: Where is Don Jr.? Eric has been at the trial but I haven’t seen Don Jr. You would think he’d be there.

    • Truthiness says:

Junior is probably up to his elbows in shell companies and moving assets to protect liability. I read that the Trump hotels were EXTREMELY lucrative during T’s presidency. This family has retained assets through so many bankruptcies, they must have it down.

      • Libra says:

Junior and Eric are just not all that capable, imo. When it comes to moving assets and protecting liability I would be inclined to think Ivanka and Jared, with she being the only one of his first three kids with a brain. She is not a part of this suit only because the statute of limitations has run out for her. That doesn’t speak to her innocence or guilt I believe.
