Is Duchess Meghan about to sign onto Audible for Archewell Audio?

While I realize that the timeline was originally set by the British media, I really did expect to hear some big business news from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex this fall. Granted, they could still announce plenty of stuff and I appreciate the fact that they’re not allowing the tabloids to dictate anything. Archewell Audio is one area in which there’s a big question mark. They parted ways with Spotify in June, didn’t respond to Spotify executive Bill Simmons calling them “f–king grifters” and then…nothing. We’ve heard rumors, of course, of WME deal-making and Meghan’s possible desire to start fresh at a different pod-streamer. But nothing from Archewell, nothing in the trade papers. Is it possible that Meghan is “close to signing” with Audible?

Meghan Markle could be set for a “huge payout” as the former royal is on the cusp of signing a major deal. The Duchess of Sussex is said to be “thrilled” at the prospect of the new deal, particularly since she parted ways with Spotify earlier this year.

Now, new sources have revealed that Meghan has a brand-new deal on the way with Audible, a streaming service that specialises in audiobooks and podcasts. The deal is set to be a “make or break for her Hollywood dream”.

Speaking to Closer, the source said: “Word of mouth is spreading that it will lead to a huge payout – even bigger than the millions Spotify splashed out – and Meghan is thrilled that she’ll be in the company of Michelle and Barack Obama.”

The source continued: “Meghan seems very confident at the moment but the reality is that she’s been in a pretty desperate spot. Losing the Spotify deal was a massive blow to her, not to mention her ego. She’s been pretty lost since but this deal could turn everything around.”

They added: “Meghan knows her new deal with Audible could be make or break for her Hollywood dream. She feels ready but that doesn’t mean this isn’t seriously daunting. She hardly sleeps thanks to the pressure of it all, but knows that the pressure will only get worse if she lands the deal – it will be make or break.”

[From The Daily Express]

“It will be make or break” – no it won’t and she’s not losing sleep over it either way. I’d love Meghan to come back to podcasting, either with Archetypes or a new pod format, and I agree that if she comes back, it will likely be through Audible. But the days of “throwing millions at podcasters” is over, and whether Meghan goes to Audible or not, it’s not make or break or even some super-profitable situation. I am hopeful that Meg has a lot of stuff she’s working on behind-the-scenes though. Announce something, Meg!!

I hope not. Podcasts are fading. But the lifestyle space is huge, and Meghan was so good at that. But @kaiser is right, it feels like it’s past time for them to make some new moves. So curious what the new reps she signed with will bring her.

    • Robert Phillips says:

Podcasts are fading because everyone has one now. But if she is really good at doing it. It will last. Don’t you notice every C and D list celebrity had or has a talk show. And the majority didn’t last. A podcast would be a good way for Meghan to talk about charities and things she feels need addressing.

  2. That’s the thing with Meg she doesn’t announce things till all her ducks are in a row. She does it on her timetable and not before. Until then we will have to wait but I’m hoping her podcast comes back I really enjoyed it.

  3. Barbara says:

I would love for her to do something completely out of left field, something different from Archetypes. I’m not sure what (since I only listen to true crime pods lately) but something else, you know.

  4. Amy Bee says:

Closer via Express. They know as much as I do about Meghan’s plans. And I still believe it was Meghan’s decision to part ways hence the reason Spotify leaked the news to the WSJ and Bill Simmons lost his shit about it. That being said, I believe Meghan will come back with a podcast at some point but it won’t be Archetypes.

  5. Nubia says:

I am hoping something with WME Is cooking up. I know people want to see more official ventures from them in a weekly/monthly basis but it must be weird to be over exposed when you are not officially promoting anything. Maybe they are trying to work out a format on how to roll out their projects consistantly but not give the press enough to beat every move they make to death.

I hope an Audible collaboration is in the works. I would love another podcast from Meghan and maybe one from Harry too? That may be pushing it but I loved when Harry interviewed PBO a few years back. They had an easy conversation and Harry asked good questions.

  7. Shawna says:

It’s always make-or-break, the last straw, the final olive branch. Ugh, tell us without telling us that you have no real storyline to give. Go back to being blindsided all the time…

  8. ThatsNotOkay says:

I imagine Simmons was angry at the Sussexes leaving Spotify because the Sussexes wanted to leave Spotify and break that contract. Spotify is the home of Joe Rogan, disinformation king, and they released that statement the year before about how they hoped the platform could be more careful about what it allows to be disseminated or something.

Maybe the Sussexes broke up with them, and THEY are the scorned lovers. Just a thought.

Anyway, WME knows what it’s doing, even if the company itself is about to be pulled private again, lol. Let them do the Meghan relaunch in the way only they can.

  9. Snuffles says:

Whatever Meghan has up her sleeve, it won’t be announced until it’s ready to launch. That much we know for sure. It could be Audible, it could be something else.

  10. Couch Potato says:

Oh yeah, the Daily Express knows what Meghan is up to, and that she’s loosing sleep. They might have heard some whispers about a deal, but they’re most likely fantasizing about her again. We just heard that people all over the world have been bing watching Suits this summer, but a podcast is her make it or break it in Hollywood?

  11. Nicole says:

I don’t think it’s make or break, but I do think it may be a blow to your ego. Any time you take a professional risk and it doesn’t work out is a blow. How you bounce back is key. Meghan is fine. I know the derrangers want her not to be but she’s fine.

  12. I actually thought WME was going to do things like get brand sponsorships for Meghan. Have her become the face of perfume, skincare, clothing brands etc. I thought it would be a chance for her to make millions of dollars. Is the agency representation just for movie production?

  13. Betty says:

I don’t understand why she hasn’t launched a lifestyle type show with Netflix. Cook with your guests as you interview them. The Tig but in visual format so that we get fashion, food and discuss fun or serious topics. And more promo, please.

  14. YeahRight says:

Make or Better for a woman who is one of the stars of the hottest streaming show this summer and fall?? lol Brit media kill me with that crap. Whatever Meghan’s next big news is it wouldn’t be announced by them. Next they will say it’s really and Apple deal if this doesn’t happen.

  15. L4Frimaire says:

Would be great if she does something new in that arena but this source seems really dubious so gonna shelve this one for now.

  16. Eurydice says:

She certainly doesn’t look like someone who hardly sleeps. I’m the wrong audience for podcasts, life style, social media in general, but I wish her well and will take a look at whatever it is she chooses to do.

  17. Haylie says:

This is tabloid trash speculation, but I live ponying out that Spotify is struggling while Netflix is thriving again. Maybe Spotify should get rid of their trash talking loser execs.

  18. Snuffles says:

I think we should keep in mind that the WGA and SAG strikes could have delayed things.

  19. Nic919 says:

Audible isn’t talking to a British tabloid about their deals. If this was from Variety or Hollywood Reporter then it could be considered accurate.

  20. tamsin says:

Clearly a stab in the dark complete with overwrought imagination.

  21. Lululu says:

Page Six (barf) covered this too and included a quote about H and M “fumbling” the Spotify deal. No, Spotify mishandled the Sussex deal. And then threw them under the bus. Audible would be a much more appropriate home for Meghan anyway. I hated seeing her under the same media umbrella as Joe Rogan.

Here’s hoping she can bring back Archetypes!

  22. Petra (Brazen Archetyped Phenomenal Woman) says:

Meghan did not lose the Spotify deal, she walked away from the Spotify deal.

  23. GDubslady says:

When the Obamas left Spotify , you know the Sussexes weren’t going to be far behind. Both Harry and Meghan are close to Obamas and I am sure they talked. I think anything Meghan and Harry do will have a public service/humanitarian angle. A cooking show will spotlight humanitarian causes or a podcast will discuss woman’s rights and spotlight efforts to improve women’s lives. Meghan doing brand deals for perfume houses isn’t what I imagine for her.

  24. Louise177 says:

The source isn’t reliable but I hope that Meghan does get a deal with Audible. It’s annoying that the media, including American, spun if it was a failure when it was always in the top 10-15. It’s also weird that so much more is expected of them. Even other major celebrities don’t get the same attention and high expectations with their ventures.

  25. B says:

I saw Audible advertising SPARE and did wonder if this was similar to Spotify advertising SPARE during a Archetypes episode or just a company who streams audio books advertising a very popular audio book is on their platform.

Either way Meghan won’t be announcing anything until the strike is over. We know this because they didn’t announce or promote anything about their acquiring the rights to the best seller “Meet me at the lake”. The book author discussed it.

Meghan is union and is sticking by the restrictions.

  26. Saucy&Sassy says:

When Archewell announces something, I’ll believe it. I believe this entire article was written to talk negatively about Meghan. Again. I would be surprised if there is a large payout up front for anything like this since the streamers have found that business model doesn’t work.

They are scraping the bottom of the barrel, aren’t they?

  27. Lady Gurnavere says:

I will not rest until I see Meghan at the Met Ball, a major film premiere, the Oscars and at the NY/Paris Fashion Shows.

    Off topic, but still.

  28. bisynaptic says:

Whether or not there’s a deal with Audible pending, this report is a Royal Rota fever dream.

  29. Johannes Bols says:

Duchess Meghan? Oh, my sides… it’ll be another fail no matter what she does…
