Shakira’s trial for allegedly defrauding the tax authorities of 14.5 million euros begins today. The court expects the trial to last for 12 sessions spaced from Monday, November 20th until Thursday, December 14th, where 117 witnesses and eight experts will be called to testify and answer questions from the defense and the prosecution, the State Attorney’s Office and the Generalitat. Among the witnesses summoned are workers who attended Shakira in Barcelona in beauty salons, hairdressers, bars, hotels and restaurants, and other employees such as her personal driver, two gynecologists, her zumba and fitness teachers and her stylist, as well as Shakira’s neighbors or doormen, among others. The artist is facing a request for a sentence of eight years and two months in prison, after allegedly committing six crimes against the Treasury between 2012 and 2014, and in addition to the prison sentence the Prosecutor’s Office demands to fine the artist with 23.8 million euros.
