Angela Bassett is finally an Oscar winner, she received her honorary Oscar last night

It’s still so wild to think that Angela Bassett lost the Oscar last year to… Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything Everywhere All At Once. It’s even wilder to realize that before last night, Bassett had never received an Oscar throughout her entire career. At last night’s Governors Awards, Bassett finally received an honorary Oscar for her body of work. Bassett was one of four honorees at the Governors Awards, which is untelevised yet well-attended. The other honorees were Mel Brooks, Carol Littleton (a legendary film editor) and Michelle Satter (founder of the Sundance Institute). Satter won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Angela Bassett wore this beautiful Dolce & Gabbana strapless gown. I cannot believe this woman is 65 years old!! Her husband Courtney B. Vance was there, and their two children came out as well to see their mom receive her Oscar. In what I’m sure was a tearful moment, Angela’s friend Regina King was the one to present the award. In her speech, Bassett paid tribute to the ten Black women who won competitive acting Oscars (Regina King included).

Is this recognition that the Academy voters are never going to give her an Oscar? She should have won for playing Tina Turner. Congrats to Angela, well deserved.

  2. Pinkosaurus says:

She looks gorgeous but I wish her dress was more of a color. She wears the most vibrant colors so beautifully and I feel like that matches her magnetic energy better than this nude dishwater blah.

Absolutely a travesty that it took this long for her to get an Oscar, but then Gwenyth has one as a doorstop in her garden so 🤷‍♀️

    • Tulip says:

Couldn’t agree more – with all of it. Hopefully this is just a step on the way to a competitive one, the Academy does not get to let themselves off the hook with this.

    • Kate says:

Totally agree, this dress is mediocre at best IMO although nothing can dim her shine. I still think about that amazing purple gown she wore to the Oscars last year, that was divine.

    ‘Honorary Oscar’

^^ As a black woman listening to all the conversations about DEI being weaponised against us, this does not sit well with me.

Let this be a precursor to the real thing already.

  4. Brassy Rebel says:

I wish they wouldn’t call these “honorary” Oscars. I much prefer the term non-competitive. And, yeah, I hope this doesn’t mean that they’ve given up on her receiving a competitive statue which she should already have. In any case, if she never receives a competitive Oscar, she will be in good company. Such luminaries as Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe never did.

  5. teecee says:

Honorary is not the same as winning and I hope she does get to win a real one soon, as she is super talented and deserving of the recognition.

  6. Lili says:

Congratulations Miss Angela! Well deserved 🙏🏾

  7. Becks1 says:

I love Jamie Lee Curtis and she was good in EEAAO, but she was not at the same level as Angela in Black Panther. Not even close. There’s good and then there’s Oscar caliber, and the latter was Angela. I also can’t rewatch Whats Love Got to Do with It without getting angry she didn’t win for that either. I don’t know if Oscar voters were just being plain racist, if they were just trying to show all the love for EEAAO, if they didn’t think a Marvel movie could be Oscar-worthy, or some combination thereof, but Angela was robbed last year.

A noncompetitive Oscar is amazing for her and she deserves it, but……..she also deserves a competitive Oscar.

    • WaterDragon says:

1000% agree on all counts. Angela rules!

    • Grant says:

I adore Angela Bassett but was her performance really that great in Black Panther? It was good, she had some scenery chewing and went out with a bang, but I don’t think her performance was markedly better than JLC’s. IMO, the person who should have won last year was Stephanie Hsu, JLC’s co-nominee who was so wonderful in EEAAO, especially in her scenes with Michelle Yeoh. Supporting Actress was stacked last year though, so many great performances!

  8. Lizzie Bennett says:

Angela is still a vibrant and incredible actress there’s still time for her to win outright. But for precedent Paul Newman and Spike Lee won competitive Oscar’s after getting honorary ones.

  9. Elizabeth says:

I wouldn’t say I like the color of this dress, and it’s not strapless, it’s sleeveless. Angela Bassett definitely should have won last year for Black Panther. I hope this doesn’t mean she’ll never be nominated again now that she has an honorary Oscar.

  10. ShellyD says:

I was pissed when Jamie won over Angela last year, because I think she should have won years ago for What’s Love Got to Do With It and Malcolm X. But as I saw someone write last year, Jamie is a nepo baby and they will always reward their own (insiders) before they reward outsiders. There is no way Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, or Mira Sorvino should have oscars before Angela Bassett.

    • AMY LYNN says:

Kate Hudson won an Oscar???? I am dumbfounded!!

      • ShellyD says:

Yes for Almost Famous, not oscar worthy at all.

      • ShellyD says:

I was wrong, Kate Hudson was nominated but didn’t win. I just checked. For some reasons all of these years I’ve been incensed that she had been given an oscar for that role 🤣

    • Grant says:

In defense of Gwyneth Paltrow (I know, I know) … I recently watched Shakespeare in Love for the first time and she really did give the performance of her career. She was luminous and earnest and, as someone who finds her largely insufferable, I was really impressed. Not sure she should have won over Fernanda Montenegro that year but given all of the flack she gets for having won an Oscar, I wasn’t expecting her to have been so good in SiL.

  11. AMY LYNN says:

Angela should have won many Oscar’s by now. An honorary Oscar is nice and all, but kind of a slap in the face. The Academy did the same think to Samuel L Jackson. An actress like Angela is not born everyday, and yet she is treated as such. Wake the eff up Hollywood!!! Stop diminishing a black woman’s worth and work ethic. Pay them what they are worth and acknowledge their skill regardless of colour.

  12. Kimberly says:

Angela was ROBBED by the Academy years ago for her performance as Tina Turner & so was Samuel L. Jackson, Glenn Close etc………HELL the list is too damn long. It’s nice to see her win this Honorary Award but at the same time I see it as ‘THOSE PEOPLE’ giving out this trophy as a consolation award for ROBBING her, especially after the MESS that they made last year with Curtis, who IMO DID NOT DESERVE that win.
