Donald Glover: I was told the script for the Community movie is done

Okay, y’all! Who’s ready for some #SixSeasonsAndAMovie news?! For a brief refresher, the quirky, clever, often outrageous and always funny Community was plagued by a lot of drama during the latter half of its run. There was in-fighting between creator Dan Harmon and Chevy Chase, Harmon was fired, Chase, Donald Glover, and Yvette Nicole Brown left before the series’ original run was finished, and the show was canceled by NBC before eventually finishing with its sixth and final season on Yahoo! Screen.

The rallying cry “Six seasons and a movie” came from a throwaway Abed line in a Season 2 episode, “The Cape.” When all of the drama went down after the end of Season 3, fans latched on to that joke, holding out hope that Community would beat the odds and fulfill the prophecy. In September 2022, Peacock announced that the movie was actually, really, finally happening and set to star all of the original cast except Chase. While promoting his new Prime Video series Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Glover was asked about the movie by ET’s Rachel Smith. He shared that not only is it happening, there’s a script. Ahhh, cool. Cool cool cool!

“I was told that the script — literally, I was texting today — I was told that the script was done,” Glover tells ET.

But, no, the script hasn’t hit Glover’s inbox — at least not yet. “I haven’t read it yet,” he says. But there’s no question about it, Glover’s all in on the project.

“It’s really just a schedule thing [but] I’m in,” says Glover, who famously portrayed Troy Barnes on the show. “I’m all in.”

It was back in September 2022 when Peacock announced that the movie was in the works, nearly a decade after the start of a fan campaign to end the comedy’s run with a film. The movie will reunite cast members Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong with original series creator Dan Harmon. McHale and Andrew Guest will also executive produce. Additionally, Peacock is acquiring the full Community series library for their streaming service.

“We’re incredibly grateful that 15 years later, we are able to deliver fans this promised movie and can’t wait to get to work with Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest, Joel McHale, Sony and our partners at UTV to continue this epic comedy for Peacock audiences,” said Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, in a statement.

By the way, it was Glover who initially pitched the idea of a Community movie during the cast’s virtual reunion table read in May 2020 — his first Community appearance since departing the show in season 5.

I’m soooo excited about this news! While I didn’t watch the 6th season during its original Yahoo run, Mr. Rosie recently did a full series rewatch and honestly, I really enjoyed all six seasons. He’ll still frequently put on some of his favorite eps as background noise and those first few seasons are just so, so good. It’s hard to believe that all of that drama happened more than a decade ago, during a long-ago era, before streaming was the norm, in which Community, 30 Rock, The Office, and Parks and Rec all graced our screens on the same night. As for Glover, I wonder if that scheduling conflict he mentions is the Lando Calrissian movie that he and his brother are reportedly writing, that he’ll also star in. Let me tell you, I’m definitely going to watch the hell out of that one, too.

Note by CB: This scene is my favorite, but there are so many great scenes!

I loved this show so much, but I quit watching after Glover left. My heart just wasn’t in it without his character. I hope not seeing the final season won’t affect my ability to enjoy/understand the movie. Either way I’m really looking forward to this!
