Sheila Atim wore silver Gucci to the BAFTAs: liquid perfection?

I’ve seen so many gowns over the years that I don’t often get excited or surprised by a look. Usually the dresses are lovely, if standard, and the actresses look pretty. It’s rare to see a standout like Sheila Atim yesterday at the BAFTAs. Maybe it’s how statuesque she is along with the fit and draping of this silver Gucci gown, but it’s such high fashion. Sheila is styled by Abisoye Odugbesan and she’s been getting noticed for her phenomenal fashion for years. I know Sheila from The Woman King and she was nominated for the EE Rising Star Award at the BAFTAs last year. We’ll be seeing so much more of her. She’s only about 33! (Wiki doesn’t know her age!)

Daisy Edgar Jones was also in Gucci, in this crimson look that’s like a standard evening gown plus sequin shorts underneath. She’s so pretty and she looks great, but this gown seems formulaic, like a calculated twist on a standard evening gown. It’s not exceptional, but I guess not many looks can be.

Best actress nominee Vivian Oparah (Rye Lane) was in a black Tom Ford gown with a cutout back. This is gorgeous. She’s shown with her costar, David Jonsson. Rye Lane is streaming on Hulu now and it looks really cute and entertaining! The trailer made me laugh out loud. It’s definitely going on my watchlist.

Fantasia Barrino Taylor brought it in this Benchellal gown that makes her look like an expertly wrapped present. This is one of the best dresses I’ve seen her in this awards season. I would say I’m excited to see what she’s wearing to the Oscars, because I forgot that she’s not nominated for one.

Daisy’s dress color is so good but the shorts are silly. The silver dress is v cool. Love Fantasia’s red dress but would prefer without the gloves. I’m over all these gloves.

Fantasia was best dress for me, easily! She’s stunning.

I really like all of these dresses! And I loved Rye Lane — lovely indie romantic comedy with a story focused on POC in London. Representation matters! Highly recommended!

  4. Ameerah M says:

Abisoye and Fantasia look amazing. Daisy’s dress is boring and feels dated with the little shorts sticking out.

    Fantasia!!!!!
I’d prefer her outfit without those gloves though, too.

Sheila Atim wins the night for me. Good color, good fit, good styling, striking but not attention-seeking, glamorous and modern all at once. Go, Sheila!!

I really like the color of Daisy’s gown. Her hair, the cut and color is a miss for me.

    1. That’s the old model standard. If you couldn’t present a dress like this you couldn’t be a runway model. She makes the carpet look like a fashion show.

    2. I would like this look if she was somewhere else. It looks exactly like celebitchy wrote. It looks like all they had was a really standard dress and they decided to ” make it interesting”. Maybe if the shorts’ color exactly match the dress I would feel different.

    4. Fantasia wore an Oscar dress. It’s so rich I have to wonder is she going to the Oscar’s? Did she decided to substitute the baftas for the oscars?

Love David Jonsson – such an incredible actor !
