The Sex and The City 2 trailer isn’t intriguing or entertaining

A lot of new trailers are coming out this Christmas movie season. After watching the trailer for the Sex and The City sequel, above, I have to say it looks like more of the same one dimensional fluff that ruined the first movie. The last movie was decent, but it just felt like a thin rehash of the show with more focus on the lifestyle and material goods. In the trailer we have Carrie poised to play some kind of pseudo celebrity with the other ladies as her entourage. There’s also a head-scratching trip to the desert. I hope they’re headed to a mall in Dubai, because these women would look less out of place on a camping trip. (The scenes were filmed in Morocco, but there’s no telling where they’re supposed to be.)

They should have put this series to bed after the last movie. It made money at the box office though so they’re going to squeeze every dollar out of it. I’m glad they’re making films aimed at older women, but do they have to be as watered down and mediocre as this? Some of us liked the strong friendships in the show more than all the label worship.

Spoiler for last movie and mild spoilers for next one
In the last film, I was really disappointed that Carrie got back together with Big after he abandoned her at the altar. She went back to their old apartment for some shoes and picked Big up again like a shopping addiction she couldn’t quit. The show had a real chance to show Carrie’s friends rallying around her and helping her get through the breakup. Instead, Carrie fought with Miranda over a dumb issue in which she blamed Miranda for Big’s inability to commit. The film was a big let down, but they’re going to throw some more “labels and love” at us, in that order. Or is it just “love for labels”? Who am I kidding. I’m going to go see it for sure.

Sex and The City 2 is out on May 28, 2010 and will feature cameos from Penelope Cruz, Miley Cyrus, Tim Gunn and Liza Minnelli. John Corbett will probably reprise his role as Aiden as he was spotted in Morocco around the time they were filming. Sarah Jessica Parker would neither confirm or deny his involvement, but she did say that Jennifer Hudson won’t be back as her assistant. Parker called the sequel a “caper” and an “antidote” to the “sadness” in the last movie. Some of us want an antidote to the cloying superficiality of the show, but you know that’s never going to happen. We’re just supposed to embrace it I guess.

Frankly, it’s quite boring with the usual Carrie narration style. If people weren’t aware of the second film and didn’t see the end of the trailer, they’d easily mistake it for one of the episodes. Very run of the mill. Yet another cash chow for SJP and the rest of the SATC girls.
Personally, I think that the franchise is nothing without Kim Cattrall. Cattrall is the guts within the tale.

  2. JohnnieR says:

I agree – Kim is what made both the series and the first film for me.

This does look a little thin, though – I concur.

I’m wondering if the other two gals were made a fair offer (salary) for this second film; if memory serves me correct, each were paid a paltry sum in relation to SJP and Kim. I hope they stood their ground the second time around.

  3. Kaiser says:

Well, I’ll say this – it doesn’t look as depressing as the first film. Hopefully, it’s not Carrie whining and throwing tantrums for two hours.

  4. heb says:

I don’t care about any of that, I want more SATC. My life is hard and not very fun, I can use as much fluff as I can get.

  5. multikultiMe says:

it’s starting to feel ‘dated’: all the gloss and luxus of an ’80’s film against the backdrop of today’s (not just economical) crises.

  6. Me says:

I will totally see it, good or not ;-).

  7. Tess says:

This is what the feminist movement brought us.

Aging, brittle, cranky, neurotic, self centered women who worship at the Barney’s altar.

  8. CadieBelle says:

I will see it no matter what – BUT – this looks really lame. I don’t want the girls jet setting around the world – I want them in NYC where they belong. It looks like they are all way to successful to be interesting. I want to see a story about freindship – not some story about super rich, “Real Housewives of New York” BORING

  9. Tia C says:

I was a big fan of the show, but I couldn’t be less interested in this superfluous sequel. The first movie sucked, this one will probably suck more. Of course, out of curiosity, I’ll see it, but I won’t be paying for it, lol.

  10. Bina says:

Does this even have a storyline?

  11. vale says:

I watched the first movie again the other day after a long time since my first viewing, and wasn’t all that impressed the second time around. Maybe because the whole Carrie-Big fairy tale isn’t my idea of great love, and because I felt everyone was very harsh and unsupportive on Miranda as she tried to heal through the cheating. And the obsessive consumerism and fixation on fabulousness is pretty tiring.

  12. EMV says:

If there was no fluff there would be no SATC. It’s supposed to be fun and provacative, not deep and moving. That is what I think at least, I could be wrong…

“I was really disappointed that Carrie got back together with Big after he abandoned her at the altar.” Oh this is why I love this site and your writers.

I thought I was the only one. See, I still fume that in Season 6 Carrie left PARIS and the Russian because she lost a necklace and couldn’t speak the language, (wah effing wah) the piece de resistance? Leaving PARIS for that soulless gutless turd, Big. It undermined every bit of strength, alleged wisdom and self sufficiency the entire franchise purported to espouse NY women (and particularly Carrie Bradshaw) as being models of.

(stepping down off soap box, sorry. got a little riled up there)

  14. ng says:

I just have to say to the last comment, that the point is she never belonged in Paris in the first place. I think the best and most moving line of the entire series was when Miranda says to Big, “go bring our girl home” (or something like that). It actually made me cry I don’t know why.

  15. happymom says:

The desert scenes are giving me an Ishtar flashback-not a great association.

  16. C-DUB says:

Clearly, you are not REAL SATC fans……

I can’t wait and I LOVED the first movie. I thought the writers did an awesome job. I can’t wait to see what Patricia Fields is going to do with the wardrobe in the second film.

The show and is one of the few television series I could watch over and over again.

    @ng…me too!!!

  17. diva says:

They should have made the script more realistic about dating in your 40s and what happens in those situations, much like the original premise of the series. This fantasy world of shopping in Dubai and them married with real life marriage problems isn’t very sexy.

  18. No Sensi says:

Yeah I totally agree with Tess there – Carrie’s character came across really badly; you’d think SJP would have spotted that.

I’ll still watch it though. I am sad.

  19. PJ says:

I heard the plot line is that Big has lost his money in the crash. Could the desert scene be part of a dream? It looks kind of unreal.

All the trailer really says is that the girls are back! Can’t wait to see it.

  20. KelBear says:

I am still a Sex And The City fan wether the movie sucks or not im still gonna see it.

  21. SageAdvice says:

I gotta say, I didn’t care how much the trailer sucked or didn’t, I’m going to see this because I loved the show and I liked the first movie.

Carrie has ALWAYS been a kind of whiny character. Samantha was always my favorite. She’s the one who is the most independent and has that fierce thing about her that she doesn’t need a man and such. Carrie has never been that character. I don’t understand why people misunderstand her character.

The show has always been superficial as well. Anyway, she got back together with Big because that is what every woman in this world would do. He’s kind of a jerk but he has ridiculous amounts of money and is sweet and wonderful when he’s actually putting some effort into the relationship.

All you pretenders out there would definitely take back a man like Big after 6 months (because she didn’t just take him back after a few days or weeks).

Also, Miranda was being really stupid about Steve cheating. While it would have pissed me off to no end, Steve is a good guy through and through and he had a weak moment because he’s still a man. Miranda hadn’t had sex with him in I think 6 months. I wouldn’t be surprised if my (future) husband cheated on me if I hadn’t had sex with him in half a year.

  22. Goddess711 says:

I was watching the SATC movie while I was wrapping today, it occurred to me that Cynthia Nichols has always been shtupped character-line and wardrobe wise. She’s type-cast now as a Miranda which sucks big time, but hers was the most under-developed character and she’s got a lot of talent she never got to show.
The movie script completely sucked, like the writers got together over a weekend and whipped it up; I don’t expect any better from this next movie. It’s all about raking in money from die hard fans (like me) and not about the craft of developing a quality story line. Way to ruin the ending of something really great!

  23. Raven says:

I guess I saw a different first film. I remember him turning around before the ceremony to get married because he realized he’d been ridiculous and she was all bent-out-of-shape in her bird hat.

And as for Paris, the Baryshnikov character was already treating her like a piece of furniture. I always liked Big and thought she had tantrums over nothing.

  24. gaby says:

Wayyyy over the top.. with no plot

  25. sassy says:

wait…why hasn’t ANYONE mentioned that in the series Stanford and Anthony HATED each other, and now they’re getting married and in the last film, they were kissing?!?!?! HEY! BACKSTORY, please!! Where the hell is Marcus?
I love SATC, this is my Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, whatever. So this hasn’t escaped me. I need to know! I will dress like Charlotte (my favorite character’s CLOTHES, not character!) and watch SATC 2, 3, 4….I don’t care how cheesy the storyline gets. I loved that show.

  26. juiceinla says:

NG: hmm. well here is my perspective: If she never belonged in Paris in the first place then she was a fraud, and didn’t embody all she purported and pretended to represent. Sorry- but saying a allegedly independent, cosmopolitan, purportedly intellectual woman “never belonged in Paris” is an oxymoron. If Carrie never belonged, then she never represented what everyone held on to.

SageAdvice- I am in total agreement with you on the whiny Carrie, but not on the getting back with Big- He effing treated her like dirt for years. He treated her like a BOGO shoe from Payless in a world of Mahnolos. Saddens me that Carrie turned out to be the heroine to so many. sigh.

  27. Bina says:

Funny that not one comment here has anything to say about Charlotte.

  28. NicoleAM says:

People take this sh*t waaay too seriously. I couldn’t give a crap if Carrie ends up w/ Big or whoever! I’ve seen quite a few episodes, although it was never my fave show. Didn’t really have much substance. Portrayed women badly, as if all we ever talk about is men, sex, shoes and high fashion. I always viewed it as fluff: silly, but not too be taken so seriously. But everyone started yapping about “Oh, I’m a Carrie!” or “I’m a Samantha!” etc etc…Never saw the 1st movie, won’t see the 2nd…I’ll just shut up now 🙂

  29. KateNonymous says:

From the moment the trailer started, I wondered, “What’s the point?” And not just “What’s the point of this movie” (although that’s the question that the trailer as a whole brings up), but “What’s the point of wearing stupid gold sunglasses if you’re just going to take them off the second you walk OUTSIDE?”

Enough with Carrie cooing through her narration. She didn’t do that in the series the way she did in the first movie (which I saw with friends and then months later watched with Mr. Nonymous, which is when I realized that it’s so bad it isn’t even snarkable).

So basically there’s no chance I’m going to see this movie. It looks God-awful.

  30. Erin says:

This doesn’t have a plot?? I loved the first one…not sure about this one.

  31. filthycute says:

I don’t get it. This, like the first, seem so far removed from the series’ original and refreshing tone. What is this slop?

    I’ll still watch it 🙂
