Carey Mulligan in Balenciaga at the Oscars: perfectly lovely?

In the end, Maestro didn’t win much this awards season and it didn’t pick up even one award at the Oscars. I found it overwrought and poorly written, but Bradley Cooper did his best to hype it and Carey Mulligan dutifully campaigned. Carey has a real knack for looking lovely but not standing out, which is surely a choice she’s making. She continued that last night in a black Balenciaga strapless mermaid gown with a tulle hem. She paired it with black opera gloves. This is one of those classic gowns that’s not going to be on anyone’s best dressed lists but is phenomenal looking with impressive details. I love the scalloped slightly asymmetric bottom and how the gown hugs her curves perfectly. Carey’s husband Marcus Mumford was with her inside the ceremony and he looked so proud of her, it was nice to see.

Michelle Yeoh got the flashier Balenciaga, a sequin one shoulder number which she also accessorized with opera gloves. She was one of the Best Actress presenters, she introduced Sandra Huller, and you could tell she was having fun this year. Michelle is goals on so many levels and I love this gown. She looks phenomenal.

Bradley Cooper was looking coiffed and plucked in a Louis Vuitton suit. He brought his mother to the Oscars of course, and Kimmel made a little joke about them in his opening monologue, saying “How many times can a man bring his mom as his date before he is actually dating his mom?” I guess you know what you’re getting when you date Bradley Cooper, and Gigi Hadid gets the pap pics while his mom gets the red carpet.

Gabrielle Union was vision in a streamlined silver metallic Carolina Herrera look that was actually two gowns in one. I heard in the red carpet coverage that she asked to put the mini dress with that skirt, which was a smart choice. Gabrielle and Dwyane Wade were producers of the Oscar nominated short film The Barber of Little Rock.

This could be care’s best red carpet look of all time for me!! Flawless.

The Union-Wades are just ridiculously gorgeous and talented aren’t they.

    • Snoozer says:

Yeah, she was my best dressed of the night, 100%. Just beautiful!!

Why did Michelle’s dress have an upside down label and the zip hanging out?? Was it too big for her?

I have mostly hated the opera gloves on everyone but Carey actually made it work. This is one of the rare times makes sense. I didn’t like them on Michelle. It was pretty impeccable. Gabrielle looked v good.

Love Carey and Gabrielle here. I understand Carey’s is from the Balenciaga archive and one of Cristobel Balenciaga’s classic designs (not one of the latter day monstrosities)

I can’t quite work out what’s going on with the fold-over area on Michelle’s neckline.

Same. I’m not a huge fan of mermaid gowns, but Carrie’s looks amazing. Michelle can usually make anything work, but I don’t think this dress does. Gabrielle looks great in that silver two-piece: it’s unique and it works.
Bradley knows how to wear a suit. He towers over his mom!

Carey’s dress is old time glamour and the proportions are gorgeous. She looked amazing.

Carey’s dress is a work of art. Perfection.

She was best dressed for me and I love how minimal her hair and makeup was. She said it was her favorite dress that she ever wore. It was perfect for an Oscar’s night and the fact that the design was from the vintage Balenciaga original was the chef’s kiss.

  6. Seraphina says:

Carey looked stunning and Gabrielle as well. Well done ladies.

  7. Fireweaver says:

Carey and Gabrielle were my picks for best dressed. Stunning!

  8. Josephine says:

Gabrielle Union’s dress was one of my favorites and it’s super cool that they were producers of the Oscar on The Barber of Little Rock. There was such a strong collection of long and short documentaries this year.

I beg to differ – Carey looks incredible here, so it’s my best-dressed. Many of the other dresses were just piles of fabric or relied on strange, floating straps to get attention, but this silhouette is elegant and striking. She looks sculpted like a statue. This gave a thin woman with a delicate build some va-va-voom.

    Bradley was so tan!

I’m not sure what was up with Michelle’s dress, but I really love her makeup. That lipstick is perfect on her complexion.

I thought Bradley looked surprisingly bad for an otherwise decent looking guy. I personally still get a kick out of him bringing his mom. Their commercials together make him more palatable.

It was a rare off-night for Michelle, in my book. But Carey and Gabrielle both look incredible.

And the Union-Wades are such great parents. Love them.

Carey Mulligan is consistently overlooked. She always looks understated and impeccable.

These three were some of the best of the night. I loved all of their looks.

I’ve already posted that Lily was hands down best dressed of the night, and then you remind me of Carey’s perfection. Lily’s still edges her out slightly for top spot, but man is it a close second. I like Michelle’s and Gabrielle’s looks as well, but Gabrielle’s had to grow on me a little. I hope my sons want to spend as much time with me as Bradley does with his mom. I think it’s sweet and hate the jokes about it. I’m not a fan of a tux with no tie.

  15. Ladiabla says:

Always love Carey’s work so anything she wears is fine by me, but this is beautiful, classic dress. Gabrielle simply looks like a million bucks. Gorgeous!
