Jennifer Lawrence wore polka-dotted Dior at the Oscars: cute or tragic?

People were shocked when Jennifer Lawrence walked the Oscar red carpet just minutes before the show started. Every time we’ve seen her in the past two years, her face looks more and more Real Housewife-esque. She claims it’s just makeup and styling, but it’s not, is it? J-Law wore this polka-dotted Dior which… I mean, she was the only one in polka dots, so she stood out. The Oscars were on ABC, owned by Disney, and this was a very Minnie Mouse look.

Anya Taylor-Joy is probably the “perfect brand ambassador” for Dior. She is thin and blonde, of course, but beyond that, she has the other-worldly look which can work for different eras and wildly different styles. Her Dior gown was pretty traditional for Dior, with the fish-scale “petal” layers and the beading. I loved Anya’s styling here – she left her hair down and super-straight, and she went full-glitz with tons of diamonds from Tiffany & Co (she also reps Tiffany & Co).

It’s funny that both Anya and Charlize Theron wore Dior – I mean, obviously, they’re both closely aligned with the label. But the Furiosa connection is interesting – Charlize went through hell playing Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, then they handed the “prequel” to Anya. Anyway, Dior and Charlize phoned in this look. They gave her an ill-fitting gown and she was like “I guess I’ll slick down my hair and throw on some jewelry.” If “I don’t care” was couture.

    Love JLaw’s dress.

Me too, Seaflower! It’s actually my favorite of the 3. Anya’s is really good but she’s weirdly muted wearing it in these pictures. Charlize is hopefully comfortable in that material, but the dress looks poorly sewn.

    • Ronaldinhio says:

JLaw’s dress is the best of these three. Sadly ALL I notice is her new AI looking face. A forehead lift, possible eye lift and fillers a gogo makes her look so different and so much less interesting

I’m showing my age. All I could think about when I saw JLaw’s dress was Julia Robert’s brown polka dot at the races in Pretty Woman, but more styled for evening. Am I the only one?

    • NG_76 says:

I love it as well. I really love Anya Taylor-Joy’s dress as well.

      • Bachy says:

Anya’s dress was magical in the Disney sense of the word, but she brings a lot of sophistication to it as well. “Otherworldly” is the perfect descriptor for this look!

    • Kirsten says:

Same. This seemed like a perfect look for a presenter. I also think she looks like her normal self – she’s lovely.

Anya’s is my favorite. J-Law’s is too casual…take away the scarf and shorten the dress and it’s for a summer picnic. Her MUA did her dirty with that streaky shadow, dark orange spray tan and off-color block-brows… she’s usually lovely.

Charlize’s dress was disastrous and the necklace didn’t work with it.

Anya looked like a lovely little doll.

Jennifer’s dress is pretty, but not Oscars.

I agree. Polka dots at this ratio are daytime; it’s a lovely ‘going for an expensive tea’ dress. Looking at it without knowing it’s Dior, I was walking along the path towards Caroline Herrera. However it’s not got Herrera’s preferred bounce out structure. Herrera can mix daytime colour and pattern with massive evening gown structure and pull it off.

    • CatMum says:

Charlize’s dress is bias cut and it’s got a bit too much ease to hang right. she could have used another fitting. not sure about the color either. I love the silk charmeuse tho! from the neck up she looks stunning.

    • Hexicon says:

JLaw’s dress would be fine for a Fourth of July country-club dance. Not so much the Oscars in March.

I think Charlize looked comfortable and I’m ok with that.

      • Bachy says:

Re: Charlize. Nobody looks good in that kind of satin-y, sheer, glossy fabric. No doubt this will be an unpopular opinion, but satin-y fabrics hilite every bump and bone and wrinkle. There’s no forgiveness.

  3. Jais says:

So I like the polka dots. Didn’t think it needed the shawl-type thing.

  4. sparrow says:

Polka dots are a daytime look, certainly at that ratio. The only one who looks good here is Anya.

Anya’s dress is channeling Marion Cotillard’s the year she won. And Marion wore it better.

Anya would look better in strong colours. She looks very washed out in the black and whites I’ve seen her lately.

JLAW looks the same ? i really dont get what people are talking about when they say that shes messed with her face? Only thing thats different is some volume loss, thats made her face little more “severe”, but in a good way imo. (And happens to the most of us as we age.

Also, everyone on twitter were praising how good she looks, so maybe its just smaller demo here that thinks shes so different looking.

    • Kara says:

Yeah, I don’t see a big difference either. She looks lovely.

    • lucky says:

I mostly agree, I think she had an upper eyelid surgery and some volume in her lips which does make a difference but keeps her recognizable.

  7. Stephanie says:

I think JLaw looks great. The fact that people can’t tell what she’s done to her face is the hallmark of good plastic surgery anyways.

  8. Lightpurple says:

I like the polka dot dress

Charlize usually gets the best Dior so her look is a bit of a surprise. She probably told them she just wanted to play it down this year so they gave Anya the best look

  9. Elsabug says:

Leslie Bibb also wore polka dots!

  10. GoldenMom says:

It feels like Dior went out of its way to make Charlize Theron look bad. That takes effort, she is stunning.

Anyone else think Anya Taylor-Joy’s holding her arms away from her body like the dress is really uncomfortable? Nice dress but her look really dropped then Law Roach stopped styling her.

  11. tealily says:

Last night wasn’t really about Theron, so I thought her dress made sense. Something a little bit interesting about it, but essentially a boring dress.

  12. Evie says:

J-Law’s face looks frozen, she needs to cut down on botox. However, she is beautiful. She seemed off when she read the tribute to Lily. She should have read it to Emma.
