Ariana Grande wore Giambattista Valli to the Oscars: ridiculous and/or fun?

In case you’re wondering why Ariana Grande got a rock star reception at the Oscars, it’s because of Wicked. There’s apparently a lot of money behind it. Ari was just a presenter (alongside her Wicked costar Cynthia Erivo), but it felt like she was everywhere during the show and on stage. Ari wore this custom Giambattista Valli which is… absurd, but also kind of fun. Back in the day, at least a dozen Oscar-attendees would wear big, ridiculous gowns like this and it was a regular thing. Not so much anymore. The biggest problem here isn’t even the big dumb dress – it’s that Ariana is sticking with that brassy shade of blonde and it’s doing her no favors.

Matt Bomer wore Brunello Cucinelli. Yes, I’m interested in the fashion, I’m not just mindlessly ogling the most beautiful man in the world.

Billie Eilish wore Chanel and she and her brother Finneas won their second Oscars! Ridiculous! While I did not like her Chanel outfit whatsoever, I f–king loved her hair and makeup. The blowout was such a great look and her makeup was gorgeous. I hope she sticks with that glam team, they know what they’re doing.

Say what you want, but Billie and Finneas deserved that Oscar – the song is absolutely not only stunning, but the head of the musical theme captures the whole movie, which is exceptional songwriting. I am amazed by her and her brother and I was hoping they would win. Loved their hug at the end and the standing ovation they got, especially Kate’s support.

    • CatMum says:

I agree 100%. it was a beautiful performance and they seem so proud of each other. I also love that they both wore Ceasefire pins.

      • Lurker says:

I sincerely hope they’re ignorant to the meaning behind that pin. That it’s truly been reappropriated to mean not just a ceasefire but a return of Israeli hostages and an end to Hamas’ campaign to wipe out the Jews. The red hand represents the bloody hand of a Jew that was captured and killed by Hamas. It comes from a famous photo (google it) of his hands on a window as he desperately screams for help. It is anti-Semitic and violent. It would be as if they wore swastika pins and told everyone it now represents “ceasefire.”

      • Sum says:

Lurker that’s not true. And most Americans- the ones who are paying for this bombardment- want it to end! Now!
The hostages couldve been released in October if Israel would swapped their hostages and agreed to stop harming Palestinians.

      • Andrea L says:

Lurker, as a Jew who grew up in the Middle East, this is not at all the sentiment or meaning behind this. Symbols can mean different things for different people but it does not equate a swastika. Calling for a ceasefire is not antisemitic; the intention and message with this pin is for a ceasefire, not a return to Hamas.

      • Whitecat says:

Lurker, even the families of the hostages want a ceasefire. Many are demonstrating in tel sviv, infront of netsnyahu’s house and at the border calling for the return of the hostages and a ceasefire now. Please stop spreading misinformation.

    • Sass says:

Agreed, they’re very hardworking and earnest young people and while I’m not the biggest fan of Billie’s singing style, I saw Barbie in theaters twice and that damn montage scene made me ugly cry BOTH TIMES (I’m not a movie crier). The song definitely has a lot to do with that.

    • Josephine says:

Was watching with my 18 year old son, and for what’s it worth, he loved Billie’s fit, so maybe it’s a young thing? I agree that it was a stunning song and I loved their performance.

    • Raspin says:

Meanwhile, I think it’s the worst of the three Barbie songs they played last night. (Dance the Night was played over the closing credits.)

      • Sum says:

Raspin agree. I dislike Billie voice but they are determined to make her a star.

      • Smart&Messy says:

I agree, Raspin and Sum. I’m a broken record about this at this point. Her singing is mediocre at best. Her catalog is boring AF, and I know because my kid keeps boring me with it. The Barbie song is OK but not that special IMO. The moment in the movie is special and emotional, and her brand of whisper singing suits the scene very well. But many other artists could whisper sing that mediocre song, or a better one. (don’t even get me started on a whole ass whisper-singing album. my kid better go all out for mothers day)

    • lucy2 says:

I really love that song too, and it was perfect for that moment in the film.

  2. equality says:

How does she sit in that with without the poofy parts being in the way of those beside her? Or does she check that part at the door?

    • Happyoften says:

The dress is very “Ode to a Penis”, so maybe she just stands at attention for the duration.

      • Justjj says:

I also thought it looked very penis! I mean, practically all her songs are overtures to penis and her new album is a hate letter to the wife whose husband she’s shacked up with… so maybe it’s on brand? I don’t like the brassy blonde or the baby voice that seemingly goes with it. She’s in her flop era.

      • Smart&Messy says:

Bwahahhaahha so funny, thank you Happyoften.

    • Beenie says:

To me, Ariana’s dress looks like something someone would wear if they are trying to avoid comments about their body.

  3. Beachbelle says:

Ari needs to have a seat, she’s not a girl’s girl or even really decent as a human being.

    • Ronaldinhio says:

      100% this.
I am amazed this is the new version of Ariana – the pale yellow Italian greyhound – Grande.

I am still smarting as I genuinely thought she was of dual heritage and a woman of colour and she has skipped past this behaviour on her privileged wings

      • concern fae says:

She doesn’t even really look human anymore. She used to be fun, now it’s kinda creepy. Hope she finds her way to a better space soon.

      • Smart&Messy says:

OMG same! I thought I was alone thinking she was of dual heritage. Now I know better. Apparently, skinny white girl is back in style, see for example Kloe K, Kylie Jenner and Ariana all putting down the self tanner.

    • Kate says:

BIG look at me look at me energy for a moment that had nothing to do with her, kind of her in a nutshell.

    • Justjj says:

The creepy whispery baby voice definitely feels like an effort to compensate for something… maybe being an all around Cluster B nightmare of a human? “Pale yellow Italian greyhound” is hilarious tho and I can’t unsee it.

Wad of gum? Cotton candy? Attic insulation??

    • Pinkosaurus says:

Haha, Jules I was thinking she looks like a little doll stuck in a wad of bubblegum.

  5. girl_ninja says:

Ariana’s gown was ungood and Matt looked soooooo good, but look at the material.

  6. With Ariana what a waste of many many many many many many many yards of fabric. She wanted all the pick fabric and she shall have all the pink fabric!

    • CatMum says:

sometimes I like to imagine what the pattern pieces must look like… that column dress is about half a mile long and has like a million notches! and then the patterns for the giant poufs… I’d just love to see them.

    • Leah says:

The dress was theme dressing for Wicked. She wore pink and Cynthia wore green. I admit I groaned when they came out and I realized it was for the movie. I’m so torn on this movie, I waited for years to see the musical listening to the CD over and over and now it’s coming and I just can’t get excited for it.

      • Justjj says:

I think anymore, there aren’t many musicals that translate from the stage to the screen. It’s a completely different experience. I haven’t seen any musicals on screen which were even close to as good as seeing it live in a theater, even with zero dollar local theatre budgets and my neighbor in the chorus… The production of this movie could be incredible, it’s just hard to make musicals happen on a screen unless they’re a Disney movie, imo. I’m interested to see if it catches on.

    • Fabiola says:

She’s clearly trying to hide how thin she has gotten

  7. Embee says:

Not sure wearing a dress that evokes being wrapped in bedding does any favors for her homewrecker image…

  8. Kateee says:

Ari looks awful head to toe, but she was probably assigned that dress by the studio, and I wonder if she may be required to keep the terrible hair for reshoots or promotion. They did only finish principal photography at the end of January. No way she could just have bad judgment about everything in her life, right? Right???

I like Billie Eilish’s outfit (though it isn’t dressed up enough) but I think she might have benefitted from hair up or the neck open. It’s too buttoned and too much fabric for me.

  9. Carol says:

I get that Ariana and Cynthia were going for pink and green to match their Wicked characters, but Ariana could barely move either her legs or arms in that pink monstrosity and the spiky ruffles on Cynthia looked like leftovers from Godzilla. They both deserved so much better!

    • iisaidwhatiisaid says:

Ugh. I just watched her speech thing and her voice is so annoying and “I’m so adorably tiny and sweet, look at me, don’t be mean to me.” She also keeps blinking like crazy and acting like she’s straining her head to like i don’t even know, look skinnier or smaller or something. I cannot believe the major change from the voice, to her terrible hair, to her skin tone which she finally isn’t spray tanning, it’s a complete 180 change. She also keeps doing this side smile like a cartoon to show her dimple when she talks and needs to stop.

  10. Sass says:

I had the same thought when I saw Erivo – this is Wicked cosplay. They’re in promo mode.

  11. smcollins says:

Forget the ugly dress that was swallowing her whole, that baby voice she was using and then that little baby gasp before announcing the winner….ugh! GMAFB
But I bet Cynthia appreciated the buffer the dress provided.

    • Kebbie says:

This is what I came here to say! What on earth is she doing with that voice? It’s like “look how dainty and cute I am” It was so cringeworthy and uncomfortable to watch. It’s so obviously fake and put on, I don’t know why she’s not dying of embarrassment.

  12. nmb says:

Why does Arianna look sooooo different than she used to? Is it her makeup or has she done something with her face? I never actually recognize her until I see a photo ID or caption….

    • lucy2 says:

The washed out blonde is terrible on her. It’s too flat, and close to her skin tone, and drops out all of her features except for her eyes. I can’t believe anyone, including her, thinks it looks good, and hasn’t made efforts to change it.

    • sevenblue says:

@nmb, it is the latest surgery she got on her eyes. She now looks like a member of a k-pop girl group. Otherwise, the change in hair color wouldn’t make such a drastic change. There is photos of her with dark hair after surgery, she looks like another person. Also, most of her career, she was painting herself brown to look like a black woman. So, her previous look wasn’t her real self either.

    • ME says:

Firstly, she’s gone back to her natural skin tone. She’s not using 10 layers of spray tan anymore. Also, she’s lost more weight.

    • Jay says:

It’s the brassy blonde and especially the bleached eyebrows which don’t do her any favours.

  13. Nic919 says:

I don’t care about the dress but she was a rude idiot to Vanessa Hudgens who was trying to interview her on love network tv and instead she literally turns away to greet Michelle Yeoh and poor Michelle tried to not make it look obvious.

I really want Wicked to start focusing on Cynthia Erivo and Johnny Bailey in promoting this film because Ariana is annoying as hell.

  14. Lila says:

Ariana’s dress looked silly from most angles, but directly from the back actually had a nice shape and flow. Wish it had just been an overall puffy skirt instead of the strange wadded situation.

  15. Kirsten says:

This basically what Jennifer Lopez wore to the Golden Globes? It’s fun but also a little over the top for someone who isn’t nominated.

    • Lens says:

Well that’s also what I thought about Jennifer’s dress at the GG – too over the top for someone not nominated. Too much look at ME ME ME. But Jennifer’s similar dress at the GG had puffs that looked like roses – these puffs just look like 2 big pillows surrounding her! I can’t imagine wearing such monstrosities all night long. Ugh

  16. TarteAuCitron says:

I didn’t realise it was actually Ariana at first. I don’t care for her anyway, she has always come across as a horrible brat, regardless of talent.

Howevuh, *inserts thumbs behind suspenders*, blonde is not her hair colour. That hair style looks hairspray-crunchy and dated. Those wispy bits in front are annoying me.
For once, I’d like to see her with a blowout.

    Obviously, I HATE the dress.

  17. Kebbie says:

She looks really bad as a blonde.

  18. tealily says:

I thought Ari’s dress was absolutely ridiculous for a presenter and I kind of loved it. Even my husband was laughing about it. I really enjoyed seeing so many people have fun with their fashion.

  19. Chaine says:

They did Billie wrong with that hair. Reminiscent of late era Michael Jackson

  20. grace says:

I think it’s ridiculous and I kinda love it. I think it would look better on a “bigger” woman though.

  21. Lululu says:

I don’t care for Billie Eilish’s music personally but I don’t hate on her either…however I do wonder why she always looks like she’s either rolling her eyes at the world or about to.

  22. Elsa says:

The worse thing about that dress was that Ariana was wearing it. Cannot stand her.

  23. Ann says:

My mom says Billie Eilish sounds like she’s anemic and calls her Geritol girl, which makes me laugh. I personally don’t mind Billie or her voice but I’m never down with her style. She reminds me of that episode of Friends where Joey puts on all of Chandler’s clothes. Always so many layers and oversized. Her Oscar look was at least fitted for a change.

Cannot stand Ariana. Her put-on baby whisper makes my skin crawl.

  24. Grant says:

I like the pink dress. It does kind of look like she went out with her duvet but IDK, it kind of works for me. I maybe would have done something different with the hair.

  25. Sum says:

Ari is to skinny and short for this dress. That’s unbelievable to me. If anyone could pull this off you would think it would be her. They couldn’t get the silhouette close enough to her body.
Would a petticoat have made this better?

  26. Michael says:

So is Ariana there this year to do some low-key campaigning for Next Years Best Song? I noticed Billy Eilish went to The Weeknd’s New Year’s Eve party which she has never done before but now that he is an Acadamy member and has a vote she decided to show up. I feel sorry that these stars have to do the dance instead of just being judged on the work itself but they all want that shiny thing so badly they created this world
