RS: The British media is getting tired of the Windsors’ ‘bizarre antics & explanations’

So many American outlets are doing Kate-gate “explainers,” trying to dissect exactly what has happened to the Princess of Wales and why 2024 has been one of the most chaotic years in royal gossip (and it’s only March). I hate to say it, but there are many glaring errors in a lot of johnny-come-lately American explainers, focusing on the wrong things or getting vital information completely wrong. One of the best commentary pieces I’ve read this week is this one in Rolling Stone: “The Royals Have Totally Lost Control of the Narrative.” Louis Staples has written about the British monarchy before and done so with a lot of humor and recognition that the whole system is completely bonkers. Well, Staples made some good points in this piece. Some highlights:

The Mother’s Day photo: All this sounded like tin-foil-hat conspiracism. But then, four leading image agencies — Getty Images, AFP, Reuters, and The Associated Press — withdrew the photo, with a dramatic “kill notice” suggesting that the photo had been manipulated. Suddenly, the story was leading the news cycle. The photo — which we’re genuinely supposed to believe was taken by Prince Willam, even though “amateur photographer” Middleton took responsibility for it — was intended to put weeks of suspicions (and memes) surrounding Middleton’s royal absence to bed. But it did just the opposite.

Marriage trouble: On a more serious note, others have suspected the royal marriage is on the rocks amid the pressure of King Charles’ cancer diagnosis. And even more sinisterly, some have claimed (without any evidence, obviously) that Middleton is dead and has been replaced by a body double. (I don’t think anyone actually thinks this, but the internet is a weird place.)

The grubbiness of Kate’s Photoshop apology: The hysterical and conspiratorial reaction to Middleton’s absence from public life — on medical grounds, mind you — is telling. I was open-mouthed when I saw a royal — people who believe they are above their subjects because of divine rights given to them by God — releasing a social media apology over some clumsy photo editing. The sheer grubbiness of it, from people who have long considered themselves above “celebrity” and the PR-worded Instagram apologies that mere mortals post when they mess up. I could feel Queen Elizabeth II turning in her grave as they forsook the public relations strategy she rigidly adhered to for her 70-year reign: “Never complain, never explain.”

Kate’s selective relatability: At other times, we’re kept at a distance. Reacting to the fervor over Middleton’s whereabouts earlier this month, Kensington Palace offered a curt response: “We were very clear from the outset that the Princess of Wales was out until after Easter and Kensington Palace would only be providing updates when something was significant.” (Posh British translation? “Shut the f*ck up, peasants!”) The royals want to be “relatable” when it suits them but also want to be far removed from scrutiny at other times. The mismatched combination of “relatable royalty” and the sudden reappearance of distant, strict protocols is a gray area where the boundaries of privacy and transparency are unclear.

The royal struggle-bus: What is crystal clear, though, is that the royal institution is still struggling to adapt to the dynamics of the social media landscape. This furor reminds me of the Prince and Princess of Wales’s disastrous tour of the Caribbean in 2022. The duo were seen being carried on thrones and also photographed greeting children behind a cage-like metal fence. In the past, they would have released favorable images to the press, who would have run them alongside near-sycophantic coverage. But now, everyone has a phone and a platform to scrutinize and amplify images that are less flattering.

The Mother’s Day photo left the British media exposed too: The same thing happened with this Mother’s Day photo — the one we’re supposed to believe Middleton was on her laptop editing herself after it was taken by Prince William, her loving husband, who she is definitely still on speaking terms with. (If it really was Middleton, I hope she is removing “proficient in Photoshop” from her CV — and if it was William, congrats on being the first straight guy to take a family photo this well-composed.) Regardless of who took and edited the photo, it’s noteworthy that it was four agencies outside the U.K. that were the first to reject it, while the British press ran the picture without questioning it. Only when the image was accused of manipulation by the above agencies did it become a controversy they couldn’t avoid covering.

No one trusts the current Windsors: With King Charles still new to the throne and now diagnosed with cancer and the younger generation unable to stage a simple photo-op without creating an international incident, this mess highlights their vulnerability. Elizabeth’s reverence doesn’t yet apply to the next generations — and they’re lucky that, for now, this scandal remains fairly low stakes.

The Monday car photo: What should worry the royals is that the British press is clearly getting tired of their bizarre antics and explanations. There was an understanding that paparazzi pictures of the princess would not be printed while Middleton was recovering from surgery. But on Monday, many outlets published a grainy shot of the princess’s side profile inside a car, next to her husband. The photo is unlikely to appease the most ardent “Where is Kate?” truthers, but seems like a warning — a symbol of how much this situation has strained the institution’s relations with the media that it depends on for survival.

[From Rolling Stone]

Staples only got two things wrong – Huevo and Buttons were not carried around on thrones during their Caribbean tour, that happened years ago, during their South Pacific tour (and it was bad). He also assumes that the Mail published the Monday car photo as a warning – that’s not how it happened at all, the photo was explicitly an arrangement between Kensington Palace and the media. William shoved Kate (or someone) into the back of the car and then KP told the Mail that William was “dropping off” Kate at a private appointment. That was a palace-and-press contractual arrangement, not a warning shot. But he got everything else right – questioning who took the photo, the reality that the Windsors don’t have any public trust, the fact that the sycophantic British media didn’t or couldn’t say anything until the international outlets killed the photo. It’s amazing to watch.

It is nice to read from American media, so close to getting it. I think, since it is the royal family, they generally don’t think it deserves the intelligent discussion or analysis. However, the main issue is the press and media manipulation by one of the most powerful families in the world. They are not just tourist attraction.

    • Lady Digby says:

@Sevenblue just proves BM are not journalists just PR wing of RF.

      • StillDouchesOfCambridge says:

They all have a hand jazzing in their azzes for being puppets – all of them. The family pic was because TMZ was going to release a pic of supposedly kate and her mom. Looks like they didnt want that or whatever – maybe she thought she’d look like sht, so supposedly willie baldweenie just whipped ou a family pic he took and she photoshopped it on a saturday night and on the sunday morning on the macin adeleide cottage. Not sure where they put the mac computer, because there’s only 3 bedrooms in that house and it’s not even enough for willie baldweenie’s office – says kkkhatie Keeen

    • yupyup says:

@sevenblue a contract takes two sides to agree to it. Harry exposed it all and the Queen and the BRF used to their advantage for years. I think you might be missing what we all now are aware of, that the RR and BM is the BRF. Their is a great expose on it. Harry and William were the first born into this experiment. RR does everything to protect and tops royals and the rest of them are meat. If they don’t give meat to BM then they don’t make money. That is the deal to allow them to ran sack the UK and not hold them accountable while also committing other crimes. Where KP messed up is embarrassing themselves and losing all credibility on their own terms. They did this to themselves. What this created was a lazy RR and BM and even lazier top royals. They kicked out the meat (H&M) because they took the headlines for doing great work and now their lies, schemes and over all unworthiness of tax payers money is in full view of the world. They are trash and so far from what we thought royalty was suppose to be like.

  2. ML says:

We keep focusing on how the royals at KP have lost the plot, because they can’t control the narrative anymore.
“In the past, they would have released favorable images to the press, who would have run them alongside near-sycophantic coverage. But now, everyone has a phone and a platform to scrutinize and amplify images that are less flattering.”
It might be a good time to mention that their impatient buddies, with whom they have always worked closely together, are just as rudderless. The BM hasn’t been able to control the narrative since “phone[s] and a platform” hit the scene. Part of the BM’s/ RR’s issue is that loss of influence and KP is not helping.

    • Snaggletooth says:

Right. Every day when I wake up I kinda wonder if today is the day Kate will be filmed prancing around the garden and we will all be thoroughly scolded for ever doubting. The RR must be sooooo pissed that they aren’t getting their “I told you so” and instead are having to increasingly pay their bills with articles that inch closer and closer to fully criticizing TRF

  3. PinkOrchid says:

That flowy dress (not the sparkly one) is so pretty and Kate looks wonderful in it. Gives her a lovely shape. She should wear more of this style, I think, rather than the straight, slim-hipped gowns. My 2 cents.

  4. Cessily says:

It is the lack of credibility and loss of trust that Kensington Palace should be focusing on, but they aren’t so I hope more publications around the world call them out on it.

  5. Julianna says:

This is off topic to this article but I wanted to get this comment out here early. I was trying to go back and look at the vehicle that William actually arrived in to the commonwealth and my suspicions were correct. I need to find better footage but I saw it on the royal family channel if you can find that video. The vehicle he arrived in was black. He arrived directly before E&S. The picture of the papped photo of W&K is navy blue. I do not think she was papped that day with him.

    • ML says:

Here’s the dark blue car: https://www.celebitchy.com/861713/prince_william_attended_the_commonwealth_service_after_dropping_off_kate/
I can’t find the black one he took to the Commonwealth service, but I believe you, Julianna. This does fit to the theme in RS as to why KP is untrustworthy. You did a great job spotting the discrepancies with the cars.

      • Julianna says:

ML. I found two different videos. The first one does not have William on footage actually exiting the vehicle however it shows E&S arriving right before him and you can see his vehicle pulling around to park behind them. They edit most of it out and show E&S walking. But you can barely see him exiting and the view is mostly blocked but the vehicle is definitely black. I found another footage of them all arriving by car and he passed by you could see the vehicle he is in is definitely black. I took snapshots from the front view that was not obscured by all the flashing blue lights from the vehicle itself and the motorcycle police next to it and it is black. I’m not sure how to post images here.

He also switched over to Kants seat.

      • ML says:

Well done for spotting it. Seriously, the paparazzi can scream that it’s a real shot, and that K was there etc, but two different cars?! This didn’t happen. Do you have a link to the videos and the time? Otherwise maybe other CBers know other places to look?
I really bothers me that we’ve been told at least 3 times that we’ve seen K since December 25 of last year and the most likely to maybe be true is the phone with Carole. The KP pix are absolutely fake, and her staff hasn’t been in contact with her and W has been acting weird. I really thought she should have her privacy, but it doesn’t feel right. I have the feeling that William is telling us what’s going on (and it’s not true), whereas she hasn’t said anything in months. Is she actually okay?

    • Jaded says:

I agree. Yet another photoshopped image of her conveniently popped into the photo. Someone on X compared the shadowy figure to an image of her from a previous engagement and they are identical. Same hat, same hair, with a few tweaks to make it look slightly different. And who wears a hat and elaborate bun to an *appointment*?

      • BlueNailsBetty says:

@Jaded Ya know, maybe since the cars are different colors then the car photo released on Monday is a real photo…taken from a previous event. Maybe that is why the pap is adamant the shot is real.

I hope some internet sleuth is looking at car shots from that 2016 event to see what color car was used that day.

    • Christine says:

JFC. Good eye! KP should definitely be looking for someone with your attention to detail to replace the current crop of underachievers. This should be embarrassing that family, but they are shameless so it won’t.

    • BlueNailsBetty says:

Actually, your comment is on topic to this article because the reporter failed to mention how problematic the car photo is and that’s just as bad as the garbage WK are trying to sell.

I am so tired of “journalists” who are producing sloppy, half assed articles and trying to gaslight us into disbelieving what our eyes clearly see.

    • Truthiness says:

Switching cars, lmao William your name is Fraud. Another contrivance and once you scratch the surface it’s just another lie in a long series of lies.

The Brit media has been harmfully complicit all along the way, fire them all!

      • Babz says:

That brings to mind the video a couple of years ago when Bill and Kate and Charlotte attended a sporting event in Manchester or somewhere in that part of the country. Someone captured a video of their arrival in a field outside of town. Kate arrived first in a black SUV. A few minutes later, Will and Charlotte arrived by helicopter, with Will piloting. Charlotte jumped out of the helicopter, carrying a backpack or small suitcase, and ran over to greet Kate in the car. Will then joined them. Bottom line, the separate arrival in separate kinds of vehicles, and Charlotte carrying her little case rushing off to greet her mum, gave the distinct impression that it had been Dad’s night or weekend with his daughter, which necessitated separate arrangements for meeting up to travel to the event. It got lots of coverage for a couple of weeks, then died down. It was after the move to Adelaide, I think, and that’s when the talk about Adelaide being Kate’s separation home really ramped up.

  6. SIde Eye says:

Everyone at KP is untrustworthy period, including and especially the heir. Call me crazy, I am in the camp something terrible happened to her. My alarm bells really went off when they stated we are not going to address crazy internet speculation that Kate has been abducted by aliens. Ok literally no one said this. This is gaslighting at its finest. Because a popular theory on the Internet, which I ascribe to, is that WILL DID SOMETHING to Kate. He could have addressed that. It’s a simple sentence of course I never harmed Kate in any way – then producing a live video of her showing she is alive and well.

All this speculation was caused by them – the swaying at the ceremony. The grainy photo op. Will being frozen out by family. The last minute no show at the funeral and he’s on the frigging program scheduled to do a reading! And so on.

Also, pigs are flying right now because I absolutely love the dusty rose gown she is wearing in that photo. I had not seen it and even her hair looks great in that pic. I miss her lobster claws, villainess bad fashion yes I said it. She’s a terrible person but she made for great posts on here. The rest of the klan is just so dull and drab, even that horse drunk on gin is boring me to death in her no support brassieres and leathery cat that got the cream facial expressions.

There have been 3 interesting royals in my opinion and 2 are not blood royals: Diana Meghan and Harry! Kate is not interesting but she sure is more interesting than these dullards!

    • ML says:

Side Eye, I started the week still believing she should have her privacy. Mostly.
      https://www.motherjones.com/media/2024/03/kate-middleton-princess-wales-photoshop-photo-royal-family-twitter-conspiracy/
Towards the end of that article they mention the RF’s history of abusive behavior. And a link to why the hime is the most dangerous place for women. This is something I can’t say is not happening. The easiest way to shut everyone up is to show that she’s okay and they haven’t. I no longer think she’s okay because of this.

      • SIde Eye says:

Exactly ML! When a number of people are openly speculating Will had a hand in this isn’t time to throw vanity or discomfort out of the window and let everyone know she is ok? Thank you for that article.

I really hope I am wrong and this is just a weird poorly executed divorce rollout and a massive PR failure. But something tells me it is something far more sinister.

  7. Dee(2) says:

They’re almost getting it. It seems like some are at least realizing regurgitating sycophantic wire press from the British media has buried a lot of things. Also those Jordan wedding photos never fail to make me shake my head. He can’t even pretend he likes her. Jury is out on whether or not they’ll ever actually divorce but how do they have so many people who believe they are happily married?

  8. Shawna says:

“who she is definitely still on speaking terms with” – LMAO.

  9. Molly says:

What in Gunne Sax hell is that top dress? I’d drop out of sight too if there was a pic of me in that out there…

  10. Liz says:

Great article. With their inept handling of whatever’s going on they’ve drawn attention to all that’s wrong.

  11. Some seem to know so they should quit complaining and grow spines and spill the damn tea.

  12. Saucy&Sassy says:

The best part is that the global media is on notice that the bm cannot be trusted. I hope in future that they (global media) make a point of thinking about what they write and attribute to the bm.

  13. Roseberry says:

It is drawing attention from everywhere, there’s so many layers and everyone’s got their own mad theory.
Sorry Kaiser if you were planning to cover this -BUT Tucker Carlson tried to jump on this story and got Pranked by Archie &Josh ( they of the unseen Oprah interview that had Vicki & Dickie Arbiter and Ingrid Sewage making utter fools of themselves) . I saw it on YouTube last night, it’s hilarious, Archie convinced him that he worked for KP, was responsible for the photoshop and got sacked – sorry I haven’t got the link, but probably easy to google

  14. Becks1 says:

their antics just keep raising more questions and its kind of hilarious they can’t see that. A picture meant to reassure people that Kate was doing fine instead has people convinced William buried her in the gardens at KP.

No one believes the KP pr at this point and that is a big problem for KP.

  15. Amy Bee says:

If the Royal Family had any competence, KP would have been disbanded after the photo fiasco.

  16. Mrs.Krabapple says:

“Never complain, never explain” should have NEVER been accepted by the public. It was a weak excuse to cover up any of the royal family’s wrongdoings. How can the public allow any official to unilaterally say “I can never be asked to answer for what I do wrong”? I’ve always thought that type of sycophantic “deference” to Elizabeth was really bizarre. I hope no one accepts that type of attitude from the royals going forward.

  17. Brassy Rebel says:

I too noticed the minor mistake about the throne carrying pics. No, it wasn’t during the Caribbean tour, but it wasn’t that long ago. The important point is that it happened.

  18. MsIam says:

That chiffon dress looks awful, it looks like some type of Victorian gown that a woman would wear on her sick bed. I miss the Kween of Bad Fashion, come back soon! Anyway, I’m not a Kate stan, fan or anything else but hopefully this Scooby Doo mystery will be over soon.

  19. Schrodinger's Kate says:

@Jaded, as I look again at this photo, too much of her neck and collar is visible and shows we are looking at her back, not at a Kate who is seated with torso facing forward and just her head swiveled that far to the side.

  20. Schrodinger's Kate says:

When I saw the title of this Celebitchy posting by Kaiser, I thought to myself there is no way the British media is getting tired of the Windsor antics. This now gives them so many more topics to mine for clickbait and sound bites for days and weeks to come, besides fretting what the Sussexes will or won’t do next.

The Sussexes are now clearly seen as the normal relatable ones. Granted I don’t have the time, money, help or energy to accomplish even a fifteenth of what they do, but I and other ordinary people can relate to volunteering and raising kids while working, yet not making infinite references to “the school run” as if it were a mystical all consuming experience.

The Sussexes, as a couple or as individuals, are what many of us extrapolate we could be if we’d had similar resources and opportunities.

At any rate, I hope reporting on the Sussexes will begin to normalize and trend more toward straightforward reporting of their work. It’s close to that here in the US and I hope that becomes true for the British media. But the BM seems dominated by reporters and commentators in a permanent state of histrionics and hyperbole so who knows.

But Camilla and Charles, Kate and William? Andrew and Fergie? What a pack of creeps and weirdos! They’re possibly relatable as what our most dysfunctional, borderline criminal relatives would be with loads of money and resources and opportunities.

Alas poor Sophie, Edward and Anne her barely seen husband. They’re the boring old aunts and uncles we remember during the holidays and see only at funerals and weddings. There will continue to be minimal interest and peripheral reporting on them.

  21. bisynaptic says:

He also missed the part that the Palaces, in the reign of QEII, did not strictly adhere to the “never complain, never explain“ motto.
