Sienna Miller in white lace Chloe at the Met Gala: it’s giving brunch?

This post is mostely for the women wearing Chloe by designer Chemena Kamali. This includes Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, Greta Gerwig and Emma Mackey. I want to give this designer the benefit of the doubt. Maybe this is a tribute to older fashion by Chloe, similar to how Prada referenced their earlier collections. Prada sent us a whole explainer for each look though and I looked through Chloe’s Instagram and there’s nothing, not even a description of the craftsmanship and work that went into the individual gowns. My favorite comments on one of the posts for these looks were the top ones: “It’s giving brunch… not the MET Gala” (I stole that for the title!) and “I love you girlies but like… theme???”

These gowns are also a distillation of some of the worst/more boring trends last night – nude, flesh-toned gowns with ruffles and details that didn’t seem tied to the theme at all. There were some floral embellishments thrown on many of these, but not to these Chloe looks. I relistened to their red carpet interview on Vogue, and this is Chemena’s first Met Gala. It shows. She didn’t explain what she was going for here, but to be fair she wasn’t asked. She seemed humble and awed to be there.

Sienna Miller just had a baby in December and she said this was comfortably draped fabric. It’s just a baby doll dress with some lace tiers? The other looks are underwhelming too and the colors are so blah. Oh well.

Ashley Graham was in Ludovic de Saint Sernin, in a formfitting gown with a a semi sheer netted sequin skirt and “Swarovski crystal copper colored roses and silver leafs [sic] and thorns around the waist line.” The gown does not need the eyelets around the bust, but I like it otherwise. Her styling is throwing me off though. She said during her red carpet hosting duties that she wanted a mullet. I know those are clip on bangs but I want the baby bang trend to die!

Camila Cabello was also in Ludovic de Saint Sernin. Her fashion is typically bad, and I think she doesn’t have enough talent behind her somewhat inexplicable fame, but this look is quite pretty. The gown is made of Swarovski crystals and is torn as “a metaphor for the evolution of human history and the endless cycle of creation and destruction.” OK. She was carrying a Jane Wade purse made of ICE with a copper rose inside. Christian Siriano, the one bright spot on E!’s fashion panel, said “she’s thirsty, it’s going to work out for her.” E! better give him whatever he asks for to keep coming back. He’s the only one who tells it like it is! RIP Joan Rivers.

  1. Josephine says:

The Chloe looks are incredibly . . . sad. None of the women looks happy to be wearing what they’re wearing.

    • Lolo86lf says:

They don’t look happy because they know they are not wearing anything new and exciting. They look kind of plain compared to others who put in the time and effort.

    • Eurydice says:

It’s a whole gallery of sad.

    • Matilda says:

I think the designer was going designs inspired by vintage nightgowns that you would find a Sleeping Beauty in but even with these incredible women it did not take.

  2. sparrow says:

Wow! That’s awful. Sorry but Chloe is one of the most overrated houses. When one of my sisters was doing her design degree, her class was taken to look at a line of Chloe designs, the purpose being to see how not to structure and finish clothing! Chloe always still succeeds in failing, whoever’s at the helm.

    • Snaggletooth says:

When Stella and Phoebe were designing for Chloe, my heart would go pitter pat for everything they did. I was in high school/college and just thought the Chloe look was everything. Now? Limp, tired, sad beige.

      • sparrow says:

I can see Phoebe. But Stella, as with Kaia on another page, is totally nepo baby to me. I thought her design was awful, still is. But yes Phoebe, with you.

  3. Jais says:

Okay, that description of Camilla’s dress made me notice that it’s distressed at the bottom which actually works with the short story that is the nights dress code. Otherwise, I was not getting how it worked but I guess it does. However, I would not hold a block of ice.

  4. Nlopez says:

Agree with Josephine! It’s giving Little Shoppe of Horrors!

  5. teehee says:

Sienna is “I like my curtains alot, so I made a gown with them too”

  6. Digital Unicorn says:

What has Sienna done to her face I almost didn’t recognise her – she using the same stuff as Emily Blunt?!?! She still looks good esp since she recently had another baby.

Not a fan of the house of Chloe – don’t really get the love for them. The handbags are ok.

  7. Miranda says:

Ashley Graham is very Lydia Dietz-meets-Jessica Rabbit.

  8. Cheshire Sass says:

If you’ve ever seen the satiric “sad beige clothing” aesthetic for children on tik tok, this is it , but for adults

  9. tealily says:

Poor Camila was posing so hard, but her boob tape was clearly visible under her arm. I’d be so angry with my stylist if I was her.

The Chloe crew looked so sad and droopy. Maybe they were supposed to be decaying leaves?

  10. JFerber says:

Ashley Graham looks like a goddess. Such an incredibly beautiful woman.
