Is Kathy Griffin getting fired from CNN for using one f-bomb?

2010 Times Square New Year's Eve

PopEater’s gossip guy is claiming that CNN has had enough of Kathy Griffin and her gutter mouth, and CNN higher-ups have already pulled the plug on having Kathy cohost the 2011 New Year’s festivities. Anderson Cooper and Kathy have been co-hosting CNN’s New Year’s show for three years running, although I only have vague memories of the past two years. If I remember correctly, I spent the 2008 New Year with my head resting gently on a toilet. Gross, yes? So, I have no memory of Anderson and Kathy’s first year, but their second year was the biggest controversy. It was for the 2009 New Year that Kathy yelled at a heckler, “Screw you. Why don’t you get a job, buddy? You know what, I don’t go to your job and knock the d–ks out of your mouth!” This year’s controversy was totally “meh”. Kathy said “f-ck”. Big f-cking deal. But apparently it is a big f-cking deal to CNN:

Following her very controversial F-bomb-dropping New Year’s Eve hosting gig, CNN executives have decided Kathy Griffin will NOT be getting a 2011 invite. “She was a total embarrassment to the network that calls themselves ‘The Most Trusted Name in News.’ Even Anderson (Cooper, her co-host) thinks it’s time to say goodbye to Kathy,” a CNN insider tells me.

Not only did the potty-mouthed redhead drop the F bomb on live TV, she also made not-so-funny jokes about needing a “bump” of cocaine and asked Cooper if he pleasured himself while looking in the mirror. As sexy as the Silver Fox is … that’s just too much, Kathy.

Even worse than the comedienne’s desperate need to shock was the fact that the show was a ratings bomb, as it fell far behind the family-friendly ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ on ABC.

Still, CNN publicist Shimrit Sheetrit tells me: “No decisions have been made yet regarding next year’s show.”

CNN, I find it hard to believe that you have not yet made a decision regarding someone who drops the F bombs live on your network!!!

Either way, it’s nice to see Dick Clark on top like the classy fella he is.

[From PopEater]

Oh, for goodness sake – Anderson was giggling the whole time! I doubt he wants Kathy gone. Spending New Year’s with her is probably the highlight of his professional year. Plus, Anderson “gets” Kathy. He loves pop culture, he laughs at her pop culture jokes, and he seems happy to play straight man to her wild girl. Now, I could totally see why CNN would want to pull the plug, though, even if Anderson didn’t want Kathy out. It might be embarrassing for CNN to have one of their top-rated newsmen (although that’s not saying much, considering CNN’s numbers have tanked) giggling like a little girl at every Lady Gaga and blow job joke.

Wish she’d be fired from tv altogether.

  2. QB says:

This would not be the first time she gets fired from a job , she will probably do a bit on her act about getting fired like always and then they will bring her back. They always do.

They ban her on the view and they always bring her back and pretty much every other show.

If only they could put her and larry King together more often. They have the funniest & weird interaction on tv.

I can’t watch anything she’s on because her voice is so grating, so I have no idea if she’s funny or not. But from this article, it sounded pretty low class. If you know you’re on live TV for something like that, just try to be a little more professional.

What a weird NY Eve host combo those 2 are anyway. Especially on CNN. I can’t see choosing CNN for NYE coverage.

  4. Goddess711 says:

That’s something I didn’t understand either – what a wacky choice of people to have hosting the program? She’s horrible! Kind of saw this ass-kicking coming. Who’s niece or cousin or whatever is she – I don’t understand how they chose her in the first place?!

I watched the coverage. Not impressed. Not only was last year’s “slap the dick out of your mouth” NOT HER JOKE, she’s just not all that funny. She seems to think being funny is saying whatever shocking thing she can come up with. That’s not humor, its shock value. I think its not even about BEING funny so much as Kathy amusing herself by trying to get a reaction out of people. Even that is giving her too much credit. I think she’s a female Michael Richards–trying to be funny, and spitting out shock value to cover up the lack of material.

i’m not surprised. it’s cnn, not mtv.

  7. Sumodo says:

Oh, Kaiser! You actually used the name Anerson Cooper in the same paragraph with “straight man.” Did you think we wouldn’t notice?

  8. DoMaJoReMc says:

    @ Firestarter: I TOTALLY AGREE!

  9. Sumodo says:

You don’t think CNN’s plan to grab the “gay male stay-at-home-on-New Year’s-Eve crowd” backfired in their faces, now do you?

  10. juiceinla says:

Hate to say it, but its time for Kathy to evolve. I love her, and her wit, but the bit is getting old. She’s better than this.

  11. moo says:

What did they really expect? She’s nasty and rude… duh!

  12. linda says:

Kathy Griffin is fabulous! I can’t bear watchng the other plodding New Year’s Eve shows with their canned excitement. She may not be to everyone’s taste, but she brings an authentic sense of humor and grit, even if it backfires on her. She’s someone who makes me laugh out loud, which few performers today can do.

Keep it up Kathy! CNN would be nuts not to have you on with Anderson next year!

  13. Kate says:

I think Kathy’s act has gotten a little tired and I agree, since her stock has risen, she tries too hard. That said, and with all due respect to Dick Clark, that show was dreadful. Seacrest — no comment necessary; J.Lo — her outfit was not exactly safe for all ages; and, I’m not trying to be cruel and I know he had a stroke and has significant health problems and god bless him for still being active, but Dick Clark really shouldn’t be appearing on the show anymore. I feel for him, I really do, but it was really really hard to watch.

  14. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

This reeks of calculated self-sabotage designed to endear audiences to her when ranting about her failings. For someone who has been on as much television as she has–and been banned from so much–you would think that she would either get a clue or a new job. She’s intermittently entertaining, um, kind of, but how long can the ‘it’s funny because I’m a victim’ thing last? Shouldn’t the ‘things that will get you kicked off of a show’ be in her DNA by now?

  15. Eileen Yover says:

Oh please! They hire her for this and don’t expect her to be HER? That’s what she’s known for putting her name in the news. That’s like blaming a cat for shedding….its going to happen.

  16. PigskinMama says:

Give her the f’ing axe already!

  17. christie says:

I can’t stand her!!!! She isn’t funny at all. She comes across as hateful and ignorant. Anytime I hear that she will be a part of something on TV I know that that is one thing that I do not want to watch.
Kathy and Howard Stern should get together. He is an idiot too!!!!!!!

  18. Laurrie says:

I can’t stand her. Her plastic face. Her annoying voice. Why is she even on television?

  19. ted says:

This is a sad pathetic lonely old hag trying to convince herself that she is a funny person who matters. The ONLY people who laugh at what she calls “jokes” are her two employees who she pays to laugh at everything she does! Go away already!
