Anthony Mackie’s son did a double take when he saw the Captain America trailer

Six years after Avengers: Endgame hit theaters, Captain America: A Brave New World will be out on February 14. This will be the first movie with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/The Falcon picking up the Captain America shield. (Sam Wilson first became Captain America in the Disney+ TV series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.) The movie was supposed to come out last May, but the Hollywood strikes pushed it back until now. Personally, I am pumped to see Harrison Ford join the MCU and looking forward to Mackie’s big debut.

Speaking of his big screen showing as Cap, Mackie told an adorable story about how his kids found out that he was assuming the role. It wasn’t after they watched Endgame or the TV show. It wasn’t even when their dad was going off to work to film the movie. Nope, it was when they saw the trailer when it played before Sonic the Hedgehog 3. His eight-year-old even did a double take. LMAO.

Some heroes wear capes — Anthony Mackie wears an iconic red, white and blue suit, which fails to impress his sons. On a recent outing to see Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with his kids, the 46-year-old father of four sat down after loading the family up with nachos when the trailer for his new movie Captain America: Brave New World played.

“My boys are not paying attention,’ ” Mackie tells PEOPLE, chuckling as he recalls how his 8-year-old began to watch. “He slowly turns and looks at me, then he looks back at the screen.”

The Sonic movie started, and the Mackie boys moved on: “It has never been a topic of conversation.”

“My boys are so funny because their only goal is to beat me at board games,” continues Mackie, who says they don’t really care that he’s a movie star. (He shares his sons, who range in age from 8 to 15, with his ex-wife Sheletta Chapital.)

“We play board games all the time, and my job never comes in into question. They just love me and appreciate me as dad. So my first job, my most important job, is just being a good dad, being the dad that my dad was for me. My work part of it doesn’t really matter.”

Mackie’s sons may shrug off his headlining role as Captain America, but to the actor, it is indeed a big deal. “This moment means everything,” says Mackie, 46, who broke out in 2002’s 8 Mile starring Eminem shortly after graduating from New York’s Juilliard School.

This is hilarious. I can imagine how this entire scene went down, too; the instant recognition accompanied by the slow head turn with the “wait a minute…” look in his eye. Too funny. I love that his kids only see Anthony as their dad and shrug his acting off as just a regular job that they have little interest in. Still, it’s wild that they paid that little attention. I wonder what the reaction would have been if Anthony just took them to see the movie without having seen the trailer, haha. That said, I’m sure they are proud of him and when it’s convenient, brag to their friends that their dad is a superhero. And, boy, are they about to really get some bragging rights next week.

8 to 15? They know what their dad does.

I know what my dad did at 5 and he worked for the government. Celebs kids know by 8

He’s doing the job right if all the kids care about is that he’s their dad. But you know on Father’s Day they will be drawing pictures of him as Captain America.

    Ha! I love this dude!
Coincidentally I’m actually rewatching Twisted Metal right now (really darkly funny and chalk full of nostalgic 80s and 90s references) and I’m definitely going to be hitting theaters for this too.

…I don’t remember him splitting from his wife, though?
