Tyler Perry is being sued for allegedly assaulting an actor on one of his shows

There have been rumors about Tyler Perry’s sexuality for years and years. Most of the rumors are simply that he’s on the downlow, or that he’s bisexual and never spoke about it publicly. Of course, it’s completely possible that he’s just really, really private about his personal life – he’s spoken about his horrible childhood, being abused as a child, and the scars that left on him. Throughout the 2010s, he was in a long-time partnership with Gelila Bekele, who is the mother of Tyler’s only child Aman. His relationship with Bekele ended in 2020, and he hasn’t been associated with anyone else publicly since then. Well, Tyler’s private life and sexuality are being served up for public discourse this week. An actor named Derek Dixon has filed a lawsuit against Tyler, claiming Tyler sexually harassed him and assaulted him.

Tyler Perry is facing an accusation of sexual assault — a claim coming from an actor on his long-running TV show, “The Oval,” and one Tyler’s camp calls a “scam” … TMZ has learned.

Derek Dixon filed a lawsuit against Perry, and in the docs he claims he and the director met at an event back in 2019 — in Derek’s words, Tyler picked him out of the crowd and asked for his phone number, suggesting he might have a role for him. As it turns out, he did … Derek says Tyler gave him a small role in 2 episodes of a show called, “Ruthless.”

Then, in January 2020, Derek says Tyler invited him to his Atlanta home, and he accepted, hoping to build a friendship that would lead to more acting gigs. But, according to the suit, while there … Derek drank too much, and ended up sleeping in a guest room. In the docs, obtained by TMZ, Derek claims Tyler got into the bed with him, and started touching his thighs — and, although, he rejected the advances that night … he claims Tyler remained interested.

Shortly thereafter, Derek says he landed the role of Dale in “The Oval” — great for his career, but he claims it was around this time that Tyler also started firing off sexually suggestive texts … including asking what Drew’s sexual preferences were, and telling him he has sex with men. Derek also notes his character, Dale, was written as a gay, homeless and desperate store clerk who had to sleep with other characters for a place to stay. He claims that’s exactly what Tyler told him he was looking for in a real life sexual partner … someone who would be loyal and dependent upon Tyler.

Derek says he feared his career would be derailed if he flatly rejected Tyler — so, instead he told him he just wasn’t “the sexual type” … but he was always terrified he’d lose his job if he complained of sexual harassment. To that point, he says Tyler, once again, invited him to Atlanta later in 2020 … and things allegedly took a dark turn. Derek claims Perry greeted him warmly, but quickly started a sexually charged conversation — like asking him if he “likes it rough in bed” — and then grabbed Derek by the throat while saying, “Look how excited you just got.” He says he pushed Tyler away, and that was the end of that alleged incident.

The most aggressive incident allegedly went down in June 2021, again at Tyler’s Atlanta home — Dixon was staying in the guest house and wearing only his underwear, when he says Tyler came in to give him a goodnight hug. He alleges Tyler yanked down his underwear, groped his butt and said, “Relax and just let it happen” and assured him it wasn’t going to hurt. Dixon says he managed to rebuff this advance by changing the subject.

According to the suit, Dixon finally filed a complaint with Equal Employment and Opportunity Commission in June 2024, and then quit “The Oval,” saying he could no longer put up with the alleged sexual harassment.

Dixon is suing Tyler and Tyler Perry Studios for quid pro quo and workplace sexual harassment and sexual assault and battery … and he’s seeking $260 million in damages.

Tyler’s attorney Matthew Boyd tells us, “This is an individual who got close to Tyler Perry for what now appears to be nothing more than setting up a scam. But Tyler will not be shaken down and we are confident these fabricated claims of harassment will fail.”

It will be interesting to see how far this gets, and whether there’s any kind of settlement. Will this be a situation similar to Jay-Z, where Jay fought like hell against the accusations? If I’m being honest, I totally believe that Tyler would flirt with an actor or give a role to someone he found attractive. But the stuff about the assaults… no, I have a hard time believing all of that.

I can see TP doing this because powerful men have a capacity to abuse. I also think that you can be very generous as TP has been but still think you can make advances against people’s will. We will see what happens.

    • Bumblebee says:

I agree this is possible and don’t want to immediately agree that’s it’s a scam just because Perry has such a good reputation. I’ll wait for more information.

    • jwms says:

TP has done a good job of keeping his “personal” life from undergoing an abundance of public scrutiny, but enough tidbits have leaked out to give more than life to the rumors.

  2. Cassie says:

I really hope this is not true , but the British press are going to have a field day with him being Lilli’s godfather .

    • Jegede says:

      Sadly true.😢😢😢😢😢

    • Miranda says:

For their purposes, I don’t think it even matters if it’s true or not. The accusation alone is enough for them to run with it. Not even the cognitive dissonance of doing so while Paedrew is still welcome at the leftovers’ family functions is going to stop them.

    • Tessa says:

The derangers were trashing him before this story came out. Because he helped out Harry and Meghan.

  3. Maxine Branch says:

I doubt there was sexual assault. I too hope he fights this tooth and nail like Jay Z.

    • Scarlett says:

Why do you doubt there was assault? We believe women, we must believe men too.

If a woman accused someone assault would you instantly doubt her experience too?

Considering how TP treated Monique, I am going to reserve judgement. KW and M have had said things in the past which ended up being true, and they have had stuff to say about TP, I am going to let this play out before doubting the veracity of Derek’s accusation. If it is proven to be true, I hope Derek gets the support and help he needs to deal with this.

      • Vicki says:

Thank you, Scarlett. Exactly. If we believe women, then we must also believe men.

    • Lawrenceville says:

I don’t know what to think. I’m just baffled at the fact that this “potential” victim kept ending up at (and putting himself in such situations) TP’s home. Multiple times the guy is making advances or outright assaulting you, yet you accept roles and continuously go to his house and sleep over or whatever??? I am so freaking confused at this. I mean, I would really, really like to believe this “victim” but he’s not really making it easy. I don’t want to jump to conclusions like many folks did when that woman falsely accused Jay-Z to be honest. Even though there have been countless proven cases of sexual assault, equally, there’ve been way too many times, when people set others up and falsely accused them of sexual assault. I guess we’ll wait and see.

  4. Brassy Rebel says:

The EEOC complaint a year ago is not a good sign for Tyler Perry. At a minimum, there may be documented evidence of sexual harassment. This person either has receipts or they do not. But we all think we know celebrities until we find out we didn’t know them at all.

    • Jais says:

That’s fair. And it will presumably go to court where there will hopefully be a fair process for everyone involved.

      • Libra says:

I predict this will never go to court. It will quietly go away with an NDA and a contribution to Mr. Dixon’s bank account. As in the comments above, even the accusation is harmful and worth the money to make it go away.

    • Sunny says:

Agreed. First off, Tyler Perry has done a lot of good things for many people including many Black legends but if you think his reputation is “good” tells me you know very little about the things that have been said in certain Black spaces for years! The way he treated Monique, his issues with other writers and his behavior in the writers strike, and his very very clear preference for casting an exact type of man of colour,(think Hitchcock and his blondes). It is telling that when I mentioned to my sister that Tyler was being sued to my sister, her immediately response was, “Let me guess, sexual harassment, probably used his power to try to coerce one those men he is always casting. He definitely has a type.” I’m going to see what evidence comes out but until then, I will choose to believe the survivor.

    • Mrs. Smith says:

Between the EEOC complaint and the texts, it seems like this person has receipts. I’m predicting a quiet settlement, but not $260M.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

A quiet settlement with an NDA would be as damaging as a formal judgement in court. If it’s not true, his only option is to fight it in court.

    • Robert says:

It talks about text messages. And texts can be pulled up later. So that right there will either prove or disprove this case. Stop texting if your talking about anything other than running late.

  5. Blogger says:

$260M is a bit much. Is he seeking a settlement of $2.6M?

  6. Glamarazzi says:

I never understand why these rich guys don’t just settle before it gets to court. Perry’s a billionaire, he’s probably got a couple mill stashed in the mattress he could spare. Pay and NDA.

    • Robert says:

Because if you ever do that once. Then everybody you meet goes after you. Just don’t do illegal things and people will leave you alone.

  7. flo says:

Not sure why the victim calling out Perry is any less believable than any other victim, or why you’re framing this as being skeptical of the person. I guess screw some victims, then?

    • Esy says:

I’m assuming it’s bias towards Meghan. TP has always been pro-Meghan/Harry and she’s just recently talked positivley about their relationship as friends/business mentor. If it comes out as true that he’s assaulted this guy (which let’s be real, based on rumours is pretty likely) she’s gonna be tainted by association and screwed over in the media, especially by the british media, even if she had zero knowledge of any it.

    • Alla says:

Agree. people forget that many people change when they get very rich and or powerful. These Celebrities are selling us a picture about them. We all have our favourites and we think we know them but we really don’t. Some are only nice to other rich powerful people. I believe the victims, and That has Never disappointed me.

  8. L4Frimaire says:

You know, in his position, when someone says no, you need to deal with it and move on. Why open yourself to that? He gives off queer old auntie vibes so why is he even so closeted? If this is a he said, he said, settle , show contrition or restorative justice, and do better. He should have known he would be under more scrutiny but also why this abuse of power? Men always disappoint.

  9. Aimee says:

I can never understand how these rich people have to harass others. Pay someone!!! Isn’t that what rich people do??? You want sex?? Pay someone for it and leave the rest of us alone.

    • Miranda says:

It’s not about the sex, it’s power that they’re truly after. Paying someone to “play along” isn’t going to scratch that itch for an actual predator.

  10. NikkiK says:

We been knew. Also, I read through the text messages and TP has serious problems.

  11. Beverley says:

Tyler Perry’s private life has been an open secret in some Black spaces for years. The facts that he is Meghan’s friend, is Lili’s godfather and may have been weaponizing his star power in the studio can all be true at once. My concern is that this gives the derangers and tabloids another stick with which to beat the Sussexes.

  12. Mee says:

I have friends in the industry. The number of male actors that have been sexually assaulted/harassed is equal to the number women it has happened to. I personally know 3 men assaulted by agents. Agents assault them, producers, directors, even women directors/producers assault men.
TP is a KNOWN predator. It’s quieter because it has stayed in black Hollywood. His ego can’t fit through the door. He knows so many black actors are trying to get in the industry so he takes advantage. It’s about control. When his employees are around, if he wants them to leave, he doesn’t say, “please excuse me, or I need privacy “ or any words. He claps twice and they scatter. That’s TP. Sure he’s done great things for black Hollywood. Doesn’t negate the predatory behavior. He’ll settle quickly.
