Nick Kyrgios confirmed that the BBC didn’t hire him for Wimbledon this year

Nick Kyrgios has been trying to be “the bad boy of tennis” for more than a decade. His career highlights include winning the doubles title at the Australian Open and making the singles final of Wimbledon in 2022. That year, 2022, was when Wimbledon banned Russians and Belarusian players, and Kyrgios got a walkover in the semifinal after Rafa Nadal withdrew. Let’s just say that I always believed there was a huge asterisk on Kyrigos even making the final that year, and he couldn’t do much against Novak Djokovic in the final.

For the past few years, Kyrigos has been injured, which suits him just fine because he gets to sit on the sidelines and bitch and moan. He’s been trying to style himself as some kind of tennis commentator, and he was even hired by ESPN and the BBC to commentate during Wimbledon. There were problems even then, because Nick is more than just an out-of-shape guy throwing temper tantrums on court – he’s also said misogynistic things in general, and in particular about WTA players. He also admitted to assaulting his girlfriend, but the charge was wiped from his record. Anyway, the BBC actually hired him again this year for commentary, only the women of the BBC revolted:

Nick Kyrgios will not be returning as a BBC pundit at Wimbledon this year, Telegraph Sport can reveal. The corporation caused outrage 12 months ago by hiring the “bad boy” of tennis just over a year after he admitted assaulting an ex-girlfriend. But Kyrgios, who has continued to court controversy since his spell working for the BBC, will not be part of the team announced for the tournament, which starts later this month. Telegraph Sport has also been told Kyrgios will not appear on ESPN’s US coverage of the grand slam tournament after working for the broadcaster at the Australian Open for the last two years.

The BBC’s hiring of Kyrgios last year was condemned by senior MPs and women’s campaigners. Caroline Nokes, the women and equalities committee chair, said the corporation should “hang its head in shame” for agreeing terms after he admitted assaulting an ex-girlfriend.
Women’s Aid and Reclaim These Streets also expressed dismay over the punditry job because Kyrgios retweeted social media posts of misogynist Andrew Tate.

In February 2023, Kyrgios admitted assaulting an ex-girlfriend but a magistrate in Canberra, Australia, called the incident “a single act of stupidity or frustration” when sparing him a criminal record.

The Telegraph reported this more than a week ago and I missed it, but it was brought up again because Kyrgios confirmed that he will not do any commentary for the BBC, and he mocked the guy who has been hired to replace him.

Nick Kyrgios has hit out at the BBC’s decision to not include him in this year’s Wimbledon coverage, saying it is the broadcaster’s loss more than it is his. The BBC is yet to officially announce its line-up for their 2025 coverage but Kyrgios has revealed that the broadcaster decided not to bring him back after last year and has questioned its apparent decision to hire American player Chris Eubanks over him. Eubanks, 29, is ranked 108th in the world and achieved his best result in a grand slam two years ago when reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

“I know I’m a great commentator,” the 30-year-old said in an interview with The Guardian. “All I’ve done for 20 years is play, study and breathe this sport. I also think tennis needs commentators who say things that not everyone says. It’s unfortunate but it’s probably their loss more than mine,” Kyrgios said when asked about the BBC’s decision to not use him at Wimbledon.

“I understand they’ve got Chris Eubanks but he hasn’t beaten the greatest of all time multiple times. When someone’s beaten Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic and has incredible insights, it’s very strange you wouldn’t want that person adding knowledge to tennis fans. I’m sure our paths will cross again. I only ever want to add humour, some knowledge and some great atmosphere.”

Chris Eubanks is a great commentator, actually – he’s done a lot of work for Tennis Channel and ESPN in recent years, and he’s a very thoughtful analyst and very calm and measured overall I’d rather hear from him, actually. “I also think tennis needs commentators who say things that not everyone says.” I mean, in some ways, that’s true – the sport needs new blood in the commentary box, and it would be great from people other than Chris Evert and the McEnroe brothers. But when he says “say things that not everyone says,” he means saying vile, misogynistic sh-t and mocking players who are more accomplished than him.

Eubanks responded, hilariously:

Chris Eubanks is a phenomenal commentator. I learn things about tennis and gain actual insights into a match when he’s in the booth. The dream team would be him and Andy Murray. Kyrgios is a violent, misogynistic blowhard who should never have been considered for these opportunities.

Chris Eubanks is really a talented commentator! He is insightful and makes timely and accurate observations about the matches he calls. He also seems to have good relationships with a lot of the current players which makes for interesting interviews.
Nick Kyrgios is just showing us who he is…again.

Oops, consequences for his actions! How upsetting for him. 🙄

  3. Blogger says:

Hope Kyrgios continues to spiral into obscurity.

    Serves the little shit right.

    Good.

I complained the the BBC last year. I knew it wouldn’t have any impact but wanted to use my voice.

  6. Kathryn says:

Nick had a phenomenal amount of natural talent, but he never hired a coach, always said he’d rather play basketball than tennis, and didn’t like to practice. It caught up with him, as well as his propensity for injuries. Horrified to hear he retweeted Andrew Tate. And PS – Chris Eubanks is very, very good at commentary.

  7. Lau says:

That guy looks way older than 30 ! Being a hateful idiot makes you age like milk.

  8. Anne Maria says:

Good. Kyrgios is only in the news because of his obnoxious behaviour on and off court: there are many players with much better records than him who get virtually no publicity. I won’t miss him.

  9. Calliope says:

I love Chris Eubanks as a commentator! I was hoping they’d use him more. And I’d much rather listen to him than Chris Evert. And the media has platformed way too many awful people; glad they’re not using Kyrgios. (And I agree, Chris Evert can go too. I think I saw Chris Eubanks for some of the women’s matches during the French Open? It was such a relief.)
