Last week, Katy Perry went on a date with Canada’s former prime minister Justin Trudeau. Her tour was moving through Canada, and not only did they have a date in Montreal, but Trudeau also came out for her concert and stood in the VIP section. We’ve heard several stories about why and how this coupling happened and I’m still suspicious. Like, I don’t think it’s a grand conspiracy – it’s too weird for that – but I just don’t believe that Trudeau and Katy are a serious couple or that this is built to last for longer than a month. Well, People Mag has an update:

Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry sparked romance rumors this week with multiple outings in Montréal, and sources tell PEOPLE that something could be blossoming between the two. One Canadian source says the pair shared an attraction, and now they are both available following Perry’s recent split from Orlando Bloom. However, the source adds that exploring their connection could have roadblocks given their busy personal and professional lives.

“They are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes,” the source says. “She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common.”

“Music is one of many things they can share,” the source adds, with optimism being another. “Both are idealists and still live in a world where they think they can make improvements, although it has gotten more difficult.”

Trudeau, 53, split from wife Sophie Grégoire in 2023 after 18 years of marriage. They share three teenage children. Meanwhile, Perry, 40, confirmed the end of her engagement with Bloom in early July, after they welcomed daughter Daisy in 2020.

“Their own personal responsibilities could make this relationship move slower than it would, but there are ways to see the other and still fulfill their parenting responsibilities,” the source says. “For one thing, they each have an ex. So, duties are split in half. And long-distance relationships, while still hard, are possible for these two.”

“Justin is a [politician] who is used to living a secret life with his personal activity, and wouldn’t put on a public display at this stage,” another Canadian source tells PEOPLE. “He knows they were being watched and is smart enough to play it low-key for now.”

“[The] timing seems good for them, although a romance is in very early stages,” the source adds.

My take: “we’re both single and we like music” is a good enough reason to date when you’re both in your 20s, but it’s weird to see a 40-year-old woman and 53-year-old man apply that same reasoning. Like… what do they really know about each other other than their relationship status? My thing is… I’ve been covering and following Katy’s life and career for years, and to put it mildly, she has very little to offer someone like Justin Trudeau.
