American football is by far the most popular sport within American borders. But did you know that we export football? Mexico loves American football, and there’s an explosion of interest in Central America and South America. There’s a lot of curiosity about American football in Europe, especially because Americans don’t share Europe’s fervent interest in what is considered “football” in the rest of the world (soccer, I’m talking about soccer). I remember John Oliver used to do a bit where he talked about how insane it is to watch American football games as an Englishman, especially the Super Bowl. Like, I think people around the world are in awe of the Super Bowl and the Halftime show in particular. Well, there’s one British guy in America who is making it his life’s mission to bring the Super Bowl to the UK. That man? Britain’s ambassador to the United States.
Britain’s man in Washington said the United Kingdom should host the first Super Bowl outside the United States. Peter Mandelson said he’d made a big lobbying effort for the NFL’s flagship fixture to take place across the Atlantic since taking up his ambassadorial role in February.
“I’ve made a big pitch for the first Super Bowl outside the U.S. to take place in Britain,” the U.K. ambassador to the U.S. told the Chicago Council on Global Affairs Thursday, asking whether there were any NFL workers in the audience.
“I want that Super Bowl in Britain. I don’t care when it takes place but I want it announced while I’m ambassador,” Mandelson added, to audience laughter. “We love it, we love it.”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan last year called for the Super Bowl to take place in the city to solidify its status as the “sporting capital of the world.”
“The Super Bowl is really important for us,” Khan said at the time. “We have a number of American football games and I want it to come here because we want American sports fans in Europe to come to London to watch them, not just go to America.”
London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will host two NFL games in October but next year’s Super Bowl will take place in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Feb. 8. The Super Bowl has never taken place outside the U.S. since its creation in 1967.
Part of the NFL’s efforts to grow the game and turn football into a global phenomenon is that they are sending some games to London every year, as Politico notes. Major League Baseball does this too, although to be fair, I think baseball already has a huge international profile, especially in Latin America and Asia. The NBA has also taken games internationally. So there’s already a move to expand the football’s viewership and grow the sport globally. But no, I don’t think the actual Super Bowl will go to the UK any time soon. If they took the SB anywhere other than the US, I think they would first keep it within North America, don’t you think? Canada or Mexico would get a SB first, then maybe the UK. In any case, American sports podbros are already super-salty about this suggestion.
PS… this reminded me of all of the times Prince William invoked “the Super Bowl” to describe his own activities. According to Kensington Palace’s PR, Earthshot is like the Super Bowl. William has been saying that for years. Ever since Prince Harry went to the actual Super Bowl in LA in 2022.

No absolutely not!! They get one game a year and in my opinion that’s one too many games but the SUPER BOWL? That will piss of many an American fan. The Super Bowl is the crowing glory of the football season here so stop over asking for things.
Fear not @ Susan Collins 🫶🏻 I can almost 100% assure you that football 🏈 will never take off in Britain. Football ⚽️ is far too ingrained in our DNA, just like football 🏈, baseball ⚾️, basketball 🏀 and (ice) hockey 🏒 are as ingrained in American 🇺🇸 DNA as Thanksgiving, Santa Claus, The ball dropping in Times Square on NYE, the Macy’s Parade, the Superbowl game on Thanksgiving, Halloween 🎃 pumpkin pie 🥧 the bald eagle 🦅 college football and cheerleaders and Mickey Mouse ❤️🤍💙
England gets 3-4 games a year with the Jacksonville Jaguars playing in at least two, so not much of a gift there. The time difference would be the biggest hurdle. The NFL likes the all day hype on Super Bowl Sunday and wants the game to end in prime time. There’s no way the NFL would want their championship game kicking off at 10 a.m. on the west coast and England would not host a game that kicks off after midnight local time.
They get 3 this year!
I sadly accept that Kendrick is not currently our ambassador but out of interest, how can we make that happen??
I do not for one moment believe Peter Mandelson cares about, let alone likes American Football.
Mandy is just doing what he always does, getting his name out there and pandering to an audience (in this case the American public) in service of his own Machielvellian interests.
Fortunately those interests are also the interests of Britain, Europe and the Labour party so I say good luck to him. You tell those Americans what they want to hear!
Mandelson must be in fantasy land.
Rugby union and rugby league are far more attractive choices than the NFL. Apart from the expat crowd, not too many will watch the match. Gridiron is sloooooow compared to all existing codes of footy in the UK. Too much padding as well. And well, football as in soccer, is the beautiful game.
The half time show is what the NFL does well but it’s a spectacle, rather than a sport.
Ahem to Britain. The Super Bowl in recent history is held in January or February depending on the calendar. It is often held in a warm place, CA, AZ or Fl. The Key word is warm. I don’t see it happening. But I encourage continuing to come to games. Football in person is kind of unreal (especially if you have good seats). The ethical support of American football is a whole other discussion thread.
As if the NFL powers would ever give up all the ancillary money generated from the event as a whole and everything that goes on around it that week.
Exactly. Not to mention the ad money.
The NFL and Jay-Z is not going to give up all that money to go to the UK where they probably won’t get much interest. And you are not going to get many Americans flying overseas to watch the Super Bowl. Dumb.
LOL! Can’t help laughing every time folks write about American “football”. I remember the first time I watched it when I visited the US, and was baffled by why it was called “football”, when the ball was thrown by hand most of the time! Why isn’t it called handball???
@lungta agree🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nope. Bye.
