Will Dakota Fanning get an Oscar nomination for ‘The Runaways’?

Okay, I just watched this (above) video over at Dlisted, and I was totally blown away by Dakota Fanning. She filmed The Runaways when she was 15 years old, y’all! And just watch the video – which I guess is the official music video/trailer for “Cherry Bomb” from The Runaways. It rocked my socks off. Even though Kristen Stewart got most of the publicity in previous months for this stuff, it doesn’t really look like her Joan Jett does anything but run around sulking (much like Kristen in real life). But Dakota as Cherie Currie? Oh. My. God. Mark my words, come awards season – approximately 9 months from now – Dakota will be a contender.

I’m not the only one noticing. The NY Post declares that The Runaways will be “all about DakFan” while EW applauds the focus on Fanning. Seriously, this little girl is doing things on film that full-fledged women would balk at.

There are three more songs from The Runaways soundtrack here – including the song “California Paradise”.

Here’s the latest trailer for The Runaways. I got chills when I heard “Crimson and Clover”. It’s spooky how good this film looks:

I have zero interest in this movie. Honestly.

  2. Kate says:

From these outtakes, it hardly looks like an Oscar worthy performance.

  3. meme says:

you’re nuts. this movie looks like crap.

  4. Sumodo1 says:

Ah, the memories that could get dashed if this movie sucks. Joan Jett once hit on my sister.

  5. Kat says:

Eh. Seems like a movie with no middle ground. It’ll either be awesome or crap. I hope for Dakota’s sake it does well. I couldn’t give two hoots about that sullen little Twilight chick.

  6. Obvious says:

i will see it because i adore Dakota. Kristen is eh. i don’t mind her if it wasn’t for twilight. it’s like Sparkles, he is growing on me more and more during his promotion for Remember Me

  7. Kolby says:

I have to agree with the previous posters. Nothing besides Dakota Fanning, who the camera really does love, stood out to me in the trailer. And even then, there wasn’t enough there to guess at how good she is.

The rest of it looks pretty meh. I think the drugged out voiceover isn’t heping, either.

  8. GatsbyGal says:

I couldn’t care less about this movie. Subject matter’s boring, never was a Joan Jett fan, don’t like K-Stew…but I would like to see Dakota Fanning. Not sure if that’ll be enough to get me into the theatre, though.

  9. here we go says:

I’m actually looking forward to this film. Still can’t stand Sparkles, but Kristen’s growing on me…LOL. Don’t know about Dakota’s chances of being nominated for this particular role, but I hope it does well.

  10. Raven says:

I was blown away by this as well. I couldn’t believe the amazing job Dakota Fanning did and was surprised by all the attention Kristen Stewart got. I also did not realize that she was 15 when she did this.

Dakota Fanning has done impressive work for a long time. We just don’t tend to think about her much because she isn’t splashed all over TMZ and the rags. For her (and her parents, it seems) it’s about the work and not the celebrity lifestyle.

  11. Beth says:

I think it looks good. It’s a good story to tell, and good stories tend to make good movies.

  12. ALEX says:

i think you’re all nuts. say what you will but this movie looks awesome. kristen stewart is a good actress-who cares what she’s like when she’s not acting. this movie looks great and i can’t wait to see it.

  13. lucy2 says:

I can’t say I have much interest in it, but if Dakota is good in it, it’ll probably be a rental.

  14. archiepelago says:

I’m not sure I agree with the Oscar comments from these clips but you are getting us to talk about it so, mission accomplished.

  15. sarah says:

Looks like a decent movie. Dakota’s a kick ass little actress and always has been. Side note, I like the original Crimson and Clover by Tommy James and the Shondells better.

  16. Harmony says:

It looks like its gonna be awesome. i still cant believe little dakota has grown up! shes a great young actress, and this movie looks really fun!

  17. Debbi says:

I will definitely see this. The original Runaways were so bad-ass, and I have a major girl crush on Joan Jett. Question: WTH is Lita Ford in the movie version, tho?

  18. Shane says:

Lita Ford didn’t join the Runaways until later so maybe not. As for Dakota being only 15 when this was filmed, the actual character was only 15 also.

  19. nikki says:

    if she’s great,why not!

  20. malina says:

Kristen has NOT proved being a good actress so far. She just seems to be herself in all of those movies, no matter who she plays, nothing changes but her hair. The thing is, we don’t have to care about what she’s like when she’s not acting because that’s all the same.
I don’t know, maybe she’ll show us some real talent in the future, but for now it is what it is.

As for the other comments, she seems to be nice and smart when you listen to her in an interview even though she indeed looks sullen.

  21. Chana says:

No interest in seeing this. I have no idea who these people are-Joan Jett and all. I’m not old enough to really know them and not douchey enough to pretend like I really do know.

  22. Tia C says:

I’ve been planning on renting it since I heard about it. I never really cared for Joan Jett’s music, and I’m no fan of Kristen Stewart, but I love almost anything about rock n roll history. And the ’70s and ’80s fashion and hairstyles ought to be fun!

  23. Trillion says:

Cannot fucking wait to see this!!!!!!!
Kaiser we love all the same shit.
    Sidenote:
Oh, and Joan Jett fans: She has a label and on this label is a great all-girl band from San Antonio called “Girl In A Coma”. (yes, after the Morrisey song) The singer is only 19 but writes like an old soul. They have a Texas sound but are sorta punk at the same time.

  24. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

Actually, I think this looks really good. Always up for a film about women breaking down walls, especially since it’s a true story. Just hope the writing’s good.

  25. Blitz says:

Didn’t find the vo very compelling. I’m not sure why this would win awards, but I did hear months ago that of the 2, the buzz was about Fanning. Otherwise the film itself didn’t explore anything in much depth.

  26. Emily says:

I’m not sure that this is Oscar worthy, but I do think Fanning will get at least one Oscar in her career.

  27. Kimberly says:

i’ll buy the bootleg off the street then maybe i’ll check it out in the theatre .

  28. Solveig says:

I think that both Dakota and Kristen are quite good actors but I’m not convinced that this is a good movie. When a film is based on some rockstar’s life be prepared to loads of cliches…
oh, and Dakota reminds me of the young Diane Lane in “Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains”, so cute.

  29. joolz says:

What age are they supposed to be portraying in the movie? I know Dakota was 15 when she filmed this…but is she supposed to be 15 in the movie? If she’s trying to play an adult she totally FAILED. Her voice still sounds like a little baby and so does her FACE. I can’t take her seriously in this role at all. From the trailer she didn’t look like she pulled it off. Kristen is a bad actress, but at least she looks a bit older and a little more believable in her role, if only physically.

  30. kelbear says:

I really just want to see this because of Dakota. After watching “The Secret Life Of Bees” and “Man on Fire” I saw how talented she really is and I am a fan now. I know nothing about Joan Jett but still would like to see the movie.

  31. Red Folder says:

I want to see this movie and give it a chance. It looks fun with the 70s hair and music. I think Dakota does a great job, too.

One of my favorite songs as a teenage was by Joan Jett: “I Love Rock n Roll” (so put another dime in the juke box baby!) That song ROCKED!

  32. hatsumomo says:

Hate to bust your bubble Trillion, but Im from SA, and I know who GIAC and they suck balls. Sorry. But my man’s best friend has a crush on the lead singer though.

  33. Kelly says:

Like most of us old enough to remember the real thing, this whole shebang cracks me up napalm-styles. The Runaways were never taken seriously. But I don’t think they were meant to be. It seems super weird to me that hollywood is choosing to historically-revisionize them because they were so fleeting and well, not that influential. There are so many real punk stories that are ripe for a much better treatment than this budget-arse, talent-free tripefest.
Siouxsie? The Slits? Now THERE’S a fucking story!

  34. EMV says:

Looks interesting enough…but I’ll probably wait to see it via NetFlix

  35. dvz says:

DakFan? I have to go puke now. Oh, and the short answer to this article’s question is “no.”

  36. Leek says:

That little girl has chops and she’s not a train wreck. She’ll be fun to watch over the years.

I’ll definitely see the movie. It’s about girls that rocked and I’m a girl, so what’s not to love.

  37. scotchy says:

    @kelly
i agree with you, the runaways are not all that interesting and as far as i am concerned considered, candy in the rock/punk world.
    rental for sure

  38. AC says:

I had the same thought when watching the trailer. Her presence is stunning. I wish I could have had that kind of confidence when I was her age… I don’t know what the movie will be like but I am very proud of her (strange emotion, I know) and I hope the movie is great and she gets the recognition she deserves for it.

  39. NicoleAM says:

I actually really wanna see this movie. And I like both DF and KS. I hate to describe them as “real,” since that word gets thrown around far too often (thanks JLo), but I think it fits.

  40. NicoleAM says:

BTW, after seeing the trailer, you know Taylor whatever her name is (chick from gossip girl) is wiping her mascara streaked face that she didn’t get this part.

  41. DIANE says:

I’d bet money this girl is insufferable. I absolutely hated her performance in War of the Worlds, an otherwise so-so pic with great special effects. Her constant overacting and screaming was like nails on a chalkboard. Honestly, if I see her name associated with a move, I avoid it like the plague.

  42. gabs says:

um wow Kristen actually got BETTER reviews than Dakota, you vultures. Critics said this was good. I want to see it! itll have a good soundtrack too i bet

  43. hooraydisc says:

dakotah fanning rules. she’s a full on actress, all the way. Kristen stewart is sexy charismatic and interesting, definitely not your usual starlet, but she sort of does the same thing every time. I mean, that’s okay, it works fine and i’d rather watch her than stupid blake lively–but dakotah fanning is a different type of actress. She knows how to fully inhabit someone other than herself. She has an incredible imagination.
