Over the weekend, Prince William tried to get some attention. Bad timing, because everyone was paying attention to the Duchess of Sussex’s appearance at Paris Fashion Week. I’m sure it wasn’t a purposeful tit-for-tat on either side – clearly, Meghan does what she wants and she doesn’t have to tell those fools where she’s going or when. William likely always planned to drop an Earthshot video this weekend, about a month away (??) from the Earthshot Prize ceremony.
This year’s Earthshot event will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. William has been keen to go to South America ever since the Sussexes had such a lovely tour of Colombia last year. So William’s video (at the end of the post) features William’s confirmation that he will go to Rio in November for the prize ceremony. Hopefully, he’ll remember to invite the prize nominees and winners this time! I’m sure some models and celebrities will be invited too, just like last year’s Earthshot event in South Africa. Heidi Klum confirmed that Earthshot contacted her and asked her to come, and I still believe she got a big appearance fee for the trip. It’s also a guarantee that Jason Knauf, Earthshot’s CEO, will be in Rio with William. In fact, the only person not invited to Rio is William’s wife.
Prince William will be flying solo to Brazil next month for the 2025 Earthshot Prize. The Prince of Wales, who founded the Earthshot Prize in 2020, will no doubt be excited for the ceremony on November 5.
However, while William, 43, will be making the long flight within a matter of weeks, his wife Princess Kate will not accompany him. This is believed to be because The Princess of Wales will instead stay at the family’s Windsor home with their children Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven. As the event is during the school term, it is believed the couple like to make sure at least one of them is at home with the children to make sure they can do the school drop offs and pick ups, as well as general parenting duties.
Kate has not attended an Earthshot Prize ceremony since 2022, the one in Boston where no one thought to invite the nominees. Kate skipped Singapore in 2023 and South Africa in 2024. Now she’s skipping Rio. Before anyone argues that Kate’s poor health is what is keeping her homebound, just know that she’s been on three ski holidays in Europe this year, AND she was in Greece for another vacation on a yacht. And she and William skipped the BAFTAs because they were on vacation in Mustique. Don’t worry though, I’m sure Knauf will be by William’s side the whole time!

When I read the word Earthshot I always associate it with the picture of William fondling the tree with his eyes closed in bliss. I wonder if Kate realizes that naycha was William’s first? If they ever divorce, I think nature will be on the plate of assets to fight over.

I wouldn’t want to go if I was Kate, not because being booed hurt my feelings, but due to a much more imminent and dangerous situation. William’s likely reaction to being booed.
William never takes accountability for anything. He blames the people around him for anything that goes slightly wrong, much less horribly wrong like being booed in the country that loves his brother. After being feted in the press in his country as going to Boston to reclaim and take away the public’s love for Harry from Harry. William is both violent and in a near constant furious rage from all accounts. And he just got booed publicly at a sporting event- a place he feels like he owns / is part of.
I would have been terrified.
Would you want to do public events with a person like that? Who takes any less than stellar response to their presence as an assault on their worth? Who attends your events only so they can lambast and criticize you for every “mistake” behind closed doors? Who after a significant public embarrassment, made worse by the fact that deep down they know it’s actually their fault, probably goes off in a rage?
William is large. Even him quietly raging would be scary. Much less shouting and throwing things as has been reported.
For someone who has been told he’s beloved and respected and has multiple glowing articles written about his tact and statesmanship when all he did was walk away from a conversation that he wasn’t a part of anymore (Trump and Zelensky, popes funeral) – being booed would come as a huge shock, an assault on how he’s been taught to view himself and something he needs to internally reject as being directed at him in every way possible.
Kate pulling out of events the day after a public embarrassment with William says a lot. But I seem to have a much different read on the situation. Maybe because I’ve been in a relationship like the one described.

I can totally see that as a reason why she doesn’t travel to events where her mother can’t be there with her. On vacations the kids and Ma are always there, but the press would pick up on Carole joining them for work. On the Caribbean Flop Tour he was probably beside himself with rage from the minute he got wind of the racist scandal on the plane ride. Imagine that in a closed space with staff to witness the humiliation.
Fascinating how no one knows what, if anything, ES has accomplished. It would be so easy to highlight the recipients and their work and the benefits of it. I mean, people get famous just for baking cookies in the Great British Bake-off. But ES is opaque and weirdly inert. So dumb and so deeply lazy.
I’m not understanding the reasoning here. They’ve gone other places before when their kids were younger, so why is it a big deal now? Why could they go on the Caribbean tour and to Boston in 2022, but now they need to keep at least one parent at home?
And that argument would work, if the other parent ever went anywhere. I know that they’re just copying Harry and Meghan’s tendency to trade off on doing stuff, but it makes sense in their case because they are each seen out doing events.

Earthshot has never been Kate’s thing, it’s not a royal-related event, it would be more obligation than vacation, and William doesn’t want her there to take focus away from him. But yeah, it’s about the school run.
Yes, he doesn’t want her there. I think they want Earthshot to be William’s “Prince’s Trust” but Charles actually funded the initial Prince’s Trust, ran it, ran the board, etc. William was given Earthshot to prop him up by Michael Bloomberg’s British wife. The majority of the funding, the set-up, the administration is all done by the Bloomberg Foundation.
It is believed that William will fly solo to Brazil because he is expected to be present at Earthshot where he will be excited because it is believed the couple like to make sure at least one of them is at home with the children. It is also believed that Catherine is good at general parenting.

I’m sure there are a lot of meetings going on before and after COP, among the people who actually do the work at COP and are trying to nail down statements and agreements before the formal events get underway. But my understanding is that you need an invite to COP meetings and plenaries (my daughter works in this field and almost went a few years ago). Apparently nobody in COP sees the point of inviting William to their meetings.
There’s a million different ways William could publicize this and force the press to pay attention, but apparently your only guarantee of an in person appearance is if you happen to be filming an American television show at Windsor castle.
