Elle Fanning wore Fendi at the ‘Sentimental Value’ premiere: not great or fine?

Sentimental Value is one of the awards-season films I’m looking forward to seeing the most. This is the first film from Joachim Trier since his Oscar-nominated film The Worst Person in the World. That was one of my favorite movies that year, and I fell in love with Renate Reinsve, who has a real Audrey Hepburn quality. Joachim Trier cowrote the script for Sentimental Value, and it’s about a famous director – played by Stellan Skarsgard – who is trying to reconnect with the daughters he abandoned, played by Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. He offers Renate’s character a lead role in his next film, but she turns it down, so he hires Elle Fanning’s American actress to play the role. Sentimental Value already won the Grand Prix at Cannes, and it’s picked up a bunch of other awards on the festival circuit.

Well, it comes out this weekend in America, and last night was the big premiere in LA. Fashion notes: Renate wore Schiaparelli, matching her lipstick to the fire-engine-red gown. She seems to like more offbeat styles, so her people probably forced into wearing a more traditional dress. Elle wore Fendi, with Cartier jewelry. I… hate this on Elle. She’s a pale blonde, and this pale pinky beige color does absolutely nothing for her. Elle’s not afraid of color either, so I have no idea what inspired this terrible fashion choice. The only explanation I can come up with is that Elle probably wanted Renate to shine, and for it to be more of Renate’s night.

Incidentally, there’s a lot of gossip that Stellan could pick up his first-ever Oscar nomination for this. I’m including the trailer below.

I love this look on Elle — her pink undertone makes the pale pink shade look almost nude, it’s a nude look done right. I feel the same way when a dark-skinned Black woman wears a deep brown color that complements her skin tone. The bold red lip adds that extra ‘oomph’ to the whole look.

Additionally, this is prettiest Fendi look I’ve ever seen? They don’t really do sweet.

Papa Skarsgard looks good too. Thanks for your sons sir!

It’s a poor colour choice for sure, but I think it’s definitely made worse by her styling. Her makeup, necklace and severe hairstyle do her no favours. I’d be fascinated to see her with a darker hair colour too, since that’s what it looks like her natural colour is given her roots and eyebrows. This look might even work really nicely if that was the case because of the contrast.

I don’t care for the dress on her, but I understand her urge to wear it. The pale-on-pale thing works for me only when it’s executed flawlessly, and that rarely happens to my eye.

What I really came here to say is that it’s a CRIME that Stellan Skarsgard hasn’t won multiple Oscars by now! I mean, how?!?

  4. CLOVE says:

The dress looks great on Elle; it should be another color.

  5. Betsy says:

I had that problem once. I have quite pale but pink skin, and I made myself a beautiful pink dress. I realized halfway through the party I wore it to that it was the exact same color as my skin and looked very very odd.

I think it’s a gorgeous dress. Doing the pale on pale thing is so tough because it’s really hard to get the hue just right and even the tint and tone/saturation on point. And I think they did a great job here.

I love this dress on her — her makeup and styling are a perfect fit too. I think that everyone coordinated here and they look fantastic as a group. I can’t wait to see this movie — Stellan Skarsgard is one of my favorite actors.

Personally I’m not a fan of this pale pink/blush (?) color, and especially not on anyone with fair coloring. It just washes her out too much. She seems to really like the pale colors so I guess she thinks it looks good. Long as she’s happy with it I guess?

Oh no! After that beautiful blue. This cut and color isn’t good for her. A beautiful woman. Is she dictating these styles or is it all her stylist’s fault?
