Ethan Hawke might end up in the awards-season mix for playing Lorenz Hart in Blue Moon. The reviews are good, and Hawke is being widely praised for his performance of the American lyricist. Hawke enjoys a good promotional tour as well, because he gets to do his favorite thing in the world: give lengthy interviews and talk about how much he loves, idolizes and misses River Phoenix and Phillips Seymour Hoffman. Every time he does this, it’s like a gut punch – it’s palpable to see how much his friends’ deaths affected him. Some highlights from Hawke’s interview with the Times:
The Before trilogy: “Maya and her friends recently watched it. It was so interesting. Maya was, like, ‘It’s impossible to imagine that Jesse and Céline wouldn’t give each other their phone number.’ And I realised what those movies are about, really, is being in the moment. The phone would have destroyed it. If they’d had phones, Céline would never have got off the train with Jesse in Vienna. She’d have been, like, ‘No, just give me your number,’ and that whole once-in-a-lifetime night would never have happened.”
Divorcing Uma Thurman and beginning his relationship with Ryan Shawhughes: Hawke later insisted that it wasn’t “some kind of Sound of Music-type love affair”, and that Shawhughes was not involved in the divorce. “The public eye is like gasoline, but what makes divorce hard is the stuff that makes it hard for everyone — the family elements, how to help the kids through it. I’m so envious of people who have amicable splits. I can’t really talk about this because I vowed to my kids so many times not to talk about the divorce in public. But one thing I will say is if you get the privilege of travelling the world, you realise that everywhere men and women have a tremendous amount of difficulty staying married.”
Having more kids with his second wife: “When I split up I was hellbent on not having any more kids and I wanted to be single for the rest of my life. But then I made a best friend and I liked kissing her.”
His ninth film with Richard Linklater, Blue Moon: “We wanted to do it 12 years ago but Rick kept saying, ‘Ethan’s not ready.’ And finally after 12 years he said, ‘OK, now you’re believable as a loser.’”
Playing a closeted gay man, Lorenz Hart: Hawke channelled his early mentors in the theatre, who spent their lives in the closet and “just kept their sexuality in another room”. He also thought about River Phoenix. “River was the first person from my group to play a gay character. People couldn’t believe it when he was in [the 1991 film] My Own Private Idaho, because he was Mr Teen Beat. But River didn’t care. He was a real leader in that way, and it would be difficult to overstate the level to which he inspired me. For years I saw myself in comparison to him and still today I often think, ‘What would he think about this? Would he think I’m selling out?’ ”
Linklater’s early advice: “Rick said to me when we were making Before Sunrise, ‘If you look at the history of the arts and talented people not reaching their potential, 90 per cent of the time it’s because of their own demons. So if you can avoid problems with drugs and alcohol, your chances of achieving your dreams go up exponentially.’ And that suddenly seemed like a simple choice.”
Losing his friend and mentor Philip Seymour Hoffman: The two of them had worked together on Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007), in which Hoffman played a heroin addict. “It’s too painful to watch that movie now, isn’t it? I mean, Phil was always open that addiction was a lifelong struggle for him. He wasn’t a dishonest man. But I don’t think anyone realised at the time how personal that performance was for him.”
On Harvey Weinstein: “Well, with Harvey, when I got called by reporters at The New York Times saying they were doing a big profile of a famous Hollywood person and sexual misconduct and abuse of power, I said, ‘Is it Harvey?’ That’s how obvious the situation was. People saw him with nine prostitutes at the Cannes Film Festival. Things have changed since then and people are attentive to abuses of power in a way they weren’t then — to the point Maya has to tease them a little and say, ‘It’s OK, you don’t need a chaperone to meet me.’ ”
To have somewhat romantic scenes with much-younger Margaret Qualley in Blue Moon: “Can I experiment with you? Please? I think people are so afraid of female sexuality and I think this idea that Margaret Qualley can’t handle herself with me is disrespectful and I’m fully capable — as are virtually all men I know — of treating her with respect. We’re all so focused on malevolent [male] energy, because it exists, but I think we beat that malevolent energy with an assumption of right behaviour rather than bad.”
“I’m so envious of people who have amicable splits.” Like, that’s a special kind of privilege too, I agree, that people can get divorced and keep it amicable. There was a lot of acrimony between Ethan and Uma, and I’m not sure they’ve ever gotten to a place where they’re back to being friends. He’s also right that “everywhere men and women have a tremendous amount of difficulty staying married.” I’m fascinated by this as well: “When I split up I was hellbent on not having any more kids and I wanted to be single for the rest of my life.” He got with Ryan like two seconds after his split from Uma!

“I’m so envious of people who have amicable splits.”
Spoken like a true Scorpio.
Didn’t he cheat with the nanny?
Just came here to say the same thing. It’s probably easier to be amicable when bad behavior isn’t involved.
Yes.
And then the interview goes on with him saying: “We’re all so focused on malevolent [male] energy, because it exists, but I think we beat that malevolent energy with an assumption of right behaviour rather than bad.”
Classic.
Is he saying that we should assume right behavior rather than bad in order to “beat malevolent energy”? That assumption has gotten us where we are, especially concerning that man in the white house.
Why can’t malevolent energy be beaten by, let’s see, changing that malevolent behavior?!?
I remember back in the day in 2003 he cheated with a bartender at a trendy Montreal bar – I remember walking by it at the time and saying to a friend “wonder if Ethan Hawke is back in there!”
And yeah – it easier to have an amicable split when you don’t publicly cheat in your wife!
The nanny came a long later I believe.
And on another note yes he was great in Blue Moon.
It’s pretty well-known in NYC that Ethan cheated on Uma with the nanny and the nanny is now his wife and she personally approves all the assistants hired for his projects around here presumably because she doesn’t want him cheating.
Source: friend who was a manager who compiled resumes for production assistants for Ethan’s wife to interview and have final say over the production-only (NOT personal) assistant.
Wow. What kind of life is that?
I wish Ethan Hawke would talk less! Just about every paragraph of this bull had me cringing.
Boohoo, he wishes he could have an amicable split, for his children’s sake – I’ll bet they wished instead that he hadn’t broken up his marriage for the person who was supposed to be taking care of them! If you shtup the nanny, your ex-wife doesn’t owe you forgiveness or friendship.
I also did not appreciate his comments about his daughter Maya and his costar Margaret Qualley (who is close in age to his daughter – yay Hollywood!) not needing “chaperones”. He’s acting like the practices that were put in place to try to prevent more Harvey Weinsteins cornering actresses in their hotel rooms are somehow limiting his (Ethan’s) creativity? I found his comments quite dismissive.
And lastly, praising his fellow actor Philip Seymour Hoffman having just explained how he himself managed to simply avoid “problems with drugs and alcohol” based on some advice, which is some truly Reagan era shite. Alas, if only Ethan could have shared those pearls of wisdom – apparently it’s a “simple choice” to not be an addict. At least, it was simple for Ethan! And really that seems to be the only lens in which he is capable of viewing things.
I must be grumpy this morning – I usually find Hawke kind of pompous but harmless, but this whole interview was exasperating.
I don’t think the Linklater comment is about “Don’t be an addict.” Saying that to an addict would be ridiculous. Saying it to someone who is on the edge of becoming a heavy drinker is useful advice.
Have to admit Ethan Hawke is someone who I’ve liked in various films, but never been someone who makes a film a must see.
🎯
He was schtupping the nanny, hello. Been around long enough to remember that Oprah interview with Uma (it was the same time when Jennifer Aniston had split with Brad). People were comparing the two because Uma got emotional and cried about their separation during the interview. I remember Uma’s brother actually gave a quote (this was in some magazine) talking about how he wanted to kill Ethan, he couldn’t believe what he did to his sister. Yeah Ethan, I’m sure you wish it was amicable. His children are right, he shouldn’t talk about the divorce, at all.
My personal theory about Ethan Hawke: he was threatened by Uma. She was in that moment the more successful and “bigger” of the two. Ethan’s current wife is not beautiful, not famous, not accomplished in her own field. (She may be a lovely person, don’t get me wrong.) She is not a threat to Ethan being the star in that marriage.
He reminds me of Ryan Phillippe in respect of his ego not being able to cope with a wife who’d won the Oscar. I also remember Ethan Hawke wrongly claiming Uma was being unfaithful with Tarantino when it was he who had forgotten he was married with young children!
Ethan trying to rewrite the past for his current PR is already saying way too much. He should absolutely listen to his kids and just refrain from discussing marriage period (his or anybody else’s).
Afterwards I have a friend that briefly worked with him on a recent-ish project of his. I asked her what he was like since we both had big crushes on him since Dead Poets Society and she said he was so personable and charismatic and joked “yea, I still would”.
But yea he has diarrhea of the mouth and needs to talk a lot less
Before sunrise captures that pre internet/social media era perfectly. Around this time I was also doing the backpacking Europe thing and met a German guy I ended up crashing with/dating for a couple of weeks. We were just in the moment having fun and being young and when I left we just said have a nice life and that was it. I think young people today like Maya have a hard time understanding how easy it was to disappear and how nothing you did was for show or would be traceable (online) forever.
“I wish I my ex-wife didn’t hate me after I slept with the nanny.”
But also:
“We’re all so focused on malevolent [male] energy, because it exists, but I think we beat that malevolent energy with an assumption of right behaviour rather than bad.”
Do go on, Ethan …
I wouldn’t want to be married to the guy, don’t get me wrong. But I love a good Ethan Hawke interview & I love seeing him onscreen. He’s great with Angelina Jolie in Taking Lives, which I stumbled upon several years ago.
Until reading this, I had forgotten about My Own Private Idaho. What a beautiful film & River Phoenix is wonderful in it.
I have hated Ethan Hawke ever since reading his first book (which is loosely autobiographical) where the main character is a complete creep who casually rapes his girlfriend. How was there never any backlash for this?
The actual f?!? What?!?
He looks defeated.
