Simon Monjack shows extremely cluttered bathroom where Brittany Murphy died

Brittany Murphy’s husband has recorded a video for Radar Online in which he first enters the bathroom where his wife died three months ago. As superficial as this sounds, the thing that really struck me about this video wasn’t that it seemed like Monjack was capitalizing on his wife’s death yet again (he claims he wasn’t and the video was unpaid) but that the bathroom was such a total cluttered mess. The clutter doesn’t represent extreme hoarding and is only at a level 4 or 5 (according to this clutter scale from a study by Boston University), but it’s still extremely messy. There are products piled on every surface and a couple of plastic storage units overflowing. Monjack explains that it’s all his wife’s stuff as he has his own bathroom and hasn’t gone in there since Murphy passed. You can also see a glimpse into the next room and there are clothes and accessories laying around, but it’s not quite as bad.

I’m a big fan of Clean House on the Style Network and it always amazes me when people live like this. (We caught some of Dancing with The Stars last night with Niecy Nash and my five year-old son said “that’s the lady from Clean House!”) It’s especially fascinating when it’s someone of means who could easily afford to hire someone to come in and help purge and organize. There’s a real cry for help in living like this, and for all Monjack can say about how Brittany was fine before her death, this room says otherwise. Is that too judgmental? Are there people who live in very cluttered houses that are perfectly fine? I’m sure they’re are, and managing and sorting clutter is a skill that needs to be learned and practiced. Still, there’s something to be said about a woman living in a multi-million dollar mansion in Beverly Hills with crap piled all around her bathroom.

In the video, Monjack gestures with half a cigar as he shows the little dog couch where Brittany was found and seems touched to see all her stuff again. He says “You’re the first people to ever see the infamous bathroom. Today was the three month anniversary of her [Brittany’s] death and before I saw you I was actually with Sharon at the grave.” You know he’s never going to clean that mess up as it reminds him of his late wife. The house is even for sale now, and good luck selling it with all that junk laying around.

Radar might not have paid Monjack for the bathroom footage per se, but he surely got some cash for other exclusive interviews. They write “Stay tuned to RadarOnline.com for more with Simon about his relationship with Brittany, how they spent their time together and their plans for the future.” I’m sure he did that all out of the goodness of his heart.

After I wrote all that, Radar put up another video with Monjack talking about his relationship with Brittany. He slurred his words and sounded drunk as he used a cigar as a prop, playing the piano and going on at length about his lost love and how they wanted kids together. The guy seemed like a total wreck, and he explained that he hadn’t spent a night apart from Brittany from the first night they met until she died three months ago. The video is unintentionally comical he looks so bad, particularly in a shot of him on a coach, smoking a cigarette. Yes the guy is incredibly big, but he’s also really unkempt, much like Brittany’s bathroom. RIP Brittany, you are missed.

Michael Jackson lived like that too: surrounded by clutter and crap.

Brittany’s husband looks a real pig, by the way.

  2. Len says:

This man is starting to make me sick. Why is he doing this? Showing her personal space to the world? It’s disgusting. And yes, this bathroom looks very worrying.

  3. mila says:

My bathroom looks similar or maybe it would look like this if I had the money to buy all the products I “need” so it doesn’t bother me much. HE bothers me though- I’m sorry I know I shouldn’t judge the book by its cover but he’s so creepy!

  4. Hannah says:

I can imagine if I had money for all the make ups and moisturisers and gels I wanted my bathroom would probably look worse!

  5. Oh wow, he does not look good.

  6. Icecat says:

    He’s SCUM.. Period.

  7. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

    Fat Pig.

  8. Praise St. Angie! says:

I’m constantly amazed when I see pics of him that such a lovely little lady like Murphy would be interested in a creepy, gross, ugly THING like this.

I totally get a Anna Nicole/Howard K. Stern vibe off of this whole situation. I think he kept her drugged to control her, making her think that she NEEDED him.

  9. Ruby Red Lips says:

Why would he do this?! is really inappropriate and sick.

Think maybe this is his way to cling to fame (I hope not)

I’m convinced he is devastated by Brittany’s death but he just needs to go away and keep himself and her privacy private. Showing this cluttered mess is disrespectful to her memory

  10. Stephie says:

    Yuck. Pretty sad.

I remember years ago visiting a friend who lived in one of those mansion-like houses in a well-to-do neighborhood and marveling at how huge the house looked from the outside and kind of feeling jealous about all that space.

Once *inside* however, I stopped feeling bad, it was a mess. Clothes strewn all over the place, broken items here and there, towels lying around. It was really shocking to me. I expected to see a really immaculate place but it was anything but. Really can’t judge a book by it’s cover.

  11. Hel says:

Its probably loads of freebies. He is revolting.

  12. Jillian says:

I’ve got a ton of beauty and hair products myself. If I had Brittany’s money, my bathroom would look the same way!

Yeah, he’s disgusting. Shut up already.

  13. Lem says:

P.St.A: ah-ha moment or something like it… that’s the first I’ve heard or read that made any sense of the union

  14. Zelda says:

Wait—hadn’t they said they had known each other for years beforethey became romantically involved? That they had been friends for a long time first?
    Am Imixing my stories up?
Because if not, that’s a far cry from “together every night since the day they met”… Is he just pathological at this point, or?…

  15. flourpot says:

I think St. A has something there. It’s very hard to judge something so serious from “news” or gossip. But I did often wondered just what she saw in him. Looks – meh. That really doesn’t matter to some of us. But so unkept and sleazy and controlling. Seeing how all this is playing from his end gives me a worry about the mum. Aren’t they still living together? I hope to hell she has the strength to get away from him. Scary. And, tho a serious accusation, probably a bit dangerous.

  16. cara says:

Omg,what a bastard.I don’t live in a clutter mess but even if I did the thought of my husband taping it and showing my private bahroom ect.would be horrible.
I think you are no better either for showing it.You should be ashamed. The poor girl just died.Let her be in peace and stop reporting what that wanker has to say.If he doesn’t get the attention he craves maybe he will go away.

  17. Just a Poster says:

But but… I have tons of lotions and potions and such too.

If I was offered freebies.. my bathroom would be A LOT worse!

  18. Wow says:

She’s not around to defend herself. We’ve seen how far he’d sell out to capitalize on her death (fake charities and all). I wouldn’t put it past him to have created this clutter himself in order to show it off to gain money. I don’t buy that this is her mess or how she lived being that the source is HIM saying it. He’s had three months to create that mess and claim any type of story to sell. He seems shady enough to do it to.

  19. escapee says:

Posts #8 and #9 nailed it.

I see a very insecure girl in all the clutter – one who was looking for tons of ways to make herself more appealing to Hollywood standards.

  20. Tia C says:

I see insecurity in all that clutter, too. Someone desperately looking for the ANSWER, so to speak.

Monjack looks like he has gained 100 pounds in the 3 months since she died!! Was he always Marlon Brando large?

  21. He looks like he smells like “outside” all the time. He doesn’t even carry himself right. I believe he knew what kind of insecure girl Brittany was and capitalized from it. Why else would he show footage of her cluttered bathroom?!?

  22. Popcorny says:

I see a very depressed guy, also one who loved Brittany. There is no doubt he adored her and is tremendously broken hearted.
Maybe the interviews and whatnot are his way of keeping her “alive” via talking about her, keeping her close.
I’m also pretty sure that these tabs, shows and mags are calling him, not the other way around.
So he’s overweight, balding and unkempt, big deal, I just don’t see that or anything he’s done as things that could justify all this animosity aimed at him.
I think they were both a bit off the beaten-path (even before hooking up together) and maybe they did indulge in under-the-counter narcotics to relieve their anxieties/self esteem. I don’t think they were trying to control each other (as it has been suggested -that he tried “keeping her drugged” to “keep her”). Looks like it was just mutual dysfunction and lifestyle.
Her chaotic bathroom is really no different than her bubbly personality. Very animated, full of life, unpretentious, eccentric, scattered, feminine and all at a-mile-a-minute.
I wish this guy well, he’ll probably never ever get over losing her.
The imperfect man is grieving -and no doubt will be for the rest of his life.
She was his wife and she was his light and life.
I kinda think a lot of this animosity pitched at him is folks trying to find & assert blame to channel the insanity of sweet Brittany leaving this world far too soon.

  23. Dawn says:

What was the point of showing her bathroom? Is it a creepy way of keeping him the public eye. The poor girl has passed, away let her be.

Or maybe he just can’t let go of her either, but it’s still creepy.

  24. kelbear says:

I just can’t believe she was married to him, such a slobby mess

  25. Majosha says:

I don’t see how the state of the bathroom is a “cry for help.” She was famous and got a lot of free stuff.

The husband is definitely creepy, though. I’m sorry, but inviting the world into Brittany’s private space (for the right price, of course) just seems inappropriate and disrespectful.

  26. cara says:

    I agree Majosha.
who cares what her bathroom was like? I feel like he raped her privacy. It’s just plain wrong.

  27. snapdragon says:

one word describes this guy: buttafuco.

  28. lucy2 says:

I too find this inappropriate and disrespectful. To tape her private home, but especially the room where she died, and give it to an entertainment website is just weird, creepy, and self serving for attention.
Does no one grieve privately anymore?

  29. JC126 says:

What a creep. He looks like Artie Lange, a little.
    The wrong person died.

  30. ThunderC*nt says:

She was a product whore. The end. Don’t make it about insecurity and stuff.

  31. Moore says:

I don’t see anything wrong with her bathroom. It could have been freebies. I’ve seen many bathrooms look like this without it being a cry for help due to insecurity.

I heard the two of them had been friends for years. Obviously there was something in him that she liked.

Him making money out of her death is sick cause it shouldn’t be done but thats the only thing I have a problem with so far.

  32. buenavissta says:

He is kind of creepy and this exposure is also creepy but I still feel kind of bad for him. Loss sucks, no matter who (or how distasteful) you are.

  33. gen says:

Like someone said, I totally think he was her Howard Stern & she was his Anna Nicole. That makes so much sense.

And for him to bring in a camera crew & publicize her house & continue to make money off her, he’s just disgusting!

  34. Melanie says:

@ Popcorny. Wow, that was a lovely eulogy. And probably the real deal as far as her life/love was concerned.
It is not all about surface stuff and I really do get the feeling he loved her.

  35. Kat says:

Grieving widower aside, there’s something very parasitic in all of his actions.

  36. fizXgirl314 says:

I’m sorry but just because you have clutter doesn’t always mean something horrendous… that sounds extremely judgemental to me…

  37. fizXgirl314 says:

You know, he might be a bit of a slob, but maybe he really loved her and maybe this is his way of grieving. The posts here sound extremely judgemental and not to mention a little off the wall… The “keeping her drugged” theory is a bit much. It’s not like people who look together and clean cut are always the most genuine and caring… look at tiger woods and jesse james… They might not look like they are slobs but their actions are vile and disgusting… I dunno, I would think after you get to a certain age you realize you can’t really judge people by how they look and that inside the unattractive shell might be a wonderful person but it sounds like a lot of people are still “learning”…

  38. Legend says:

The fact that she married him in the first place shows that something was TERRIBLY wrong.

  39. Jag says:

Why would he do this? The fact he looks so bad now makes me the tiniest bit sad for him, but not by much. He’s terrible.

  40. Moofreakinmoo says:

I don’t know what the hell to make of him. He’s never come across as a terrible person in interviews or anything, seems like a complex situation.
