Nick Jonas: social anxiety ‘hit me like a gut punch’ at the Globes

I love people watching during live awards ceremonies, especially when the camera cuts to attendees being candid during commercial breaks. Like when Leonardo DiCaprio was being animated at this year’s Golden Globes or when Selena Gomez was gossiping with Taylor Swift at the 2024 Globes. It’s fascinating to see famous people interact when they let their guard down.

Nick Jonas had a candid moment go viral during the Golden Globes. Nick and Priyanka Chopra were there on a date night. They posted a cute video of them dancing and were spotted posing on the red carpet. The moment that caught everyone’s attention, however, was a video posted by Parade that captured Nick stepping outside of a tent alone and drinking from a water bottle. It looked like he was taking a time out from the chaos inside, and he was. In the replies to a repost, Nick confirmed that his social anxiety hit him “like a gut punch.”

Nick Jonas is just like the rest of us.

After the musician, 33, was seen stepping outside during the 2026 Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Jan. 11, he candidly shared with fans what happened.

In a video caught by Parade, the actor was seen looking around as he took a sip of water outside the annual awards ceremony.

After the clip went viral online, he responded to a repost on X, in which a fan account said, “social anxiety got the best of him.”

Jonas said the fan’s speculation was right. “Yeah…it hit me like a gut punch,” he wrote, referring to his latest single, “Gut Punch.”

“Hit me like a gut punch, I hurt my own feelings,” he sings in the song’s chorus. “How did I get so good at being mean to myself? / I should turn the heat down, tell myself to chill out / Damn, I really hate the way I talk to myself.”

In the comment section, fans applauded Jonas for being candid about how he felt on Sunday.

“You’re doing amazing, sweetie!!!! We all got the social anxiety blues,” one person said.

Another agreed, adding, “It’s okay! It gets the best of us all sometimes.”

There is so much going on at those award shows that I can only imagine how overstimulating and overwhelming they can be, especially when everyone is trying to get your attention or take your picture. I’m glad Nick was able to remove himself and find a quiet, private spot for fresh air and some water. It’s so important to know your triggers and recognize when you need to take a step back and recalibrate.

Letting everyone know his feelings while quoting his new song was clever, cutesy, and a very Nick Jonas thing to do. I don’t think Nick has specifically talked about social anxiety before, but he has been vocal about seeing a therapist to deal with both his type 1 diabetes and the pressure he puts on himself to be perfect. On January 1, he posted a video to Instagram about how he was feeling reflective and a little anxious about the start of a new year and Gut Punch’s launch. As someone who suffers from generalized anxiety, I always appreciate when someone with a big platform speaks out about these types of feelings. You never know who will relate, feel less alone, and be inspired to get help.

I don’t care much if maga boy has an anxiety attack. The people of Minnesota are being terrorized by his president so I don’t give a f!ck.
