Times: Prince William is growing into ‘the UK’s secret weapon of diplomacy’

Prince Wiliam, the Prince of Wales, will turn 44 years old this summer. His office and the British royal reporters still talk about him like a surly youth who must be applauded as an “international statesman” and “diplomat” whenever he does just a small fraction of what his father did in his 20s. So it is with William’s upcoming “visit” to Saudi Arabia. He will travel to the kingdom for a whirlwind two-day trip, arriving in Riyadh on February 9th. There’s a reason why The Times’ Roya Nikkhah got a huge exclusive about the trip this weekend: it’s because William ALWAYS does this, he always overhypes and underdelivers. The hype is always “Scooter King is the second coming of George C. Marshall” and then the actual trip happens and it’s just sad-sack Peggington wandering around, doing god-awful photo-ops and being treated like the village idiot. Some highlights from Nikkhah’s new Times piece:

William will meet with Mohammed bin Salman: The two-day visit, at the request of the British government, begins on February 9. William will be on a royal soft power mission celebrating “growing trade, energy and investment ties” with the richest state in the Middle East “as the two nations approach a century of diplomatic relations” next year. Intelligence-sharing and security will also be on the agenda. William is expected to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as “MBS”. The controversial de facto ruler of the kingdom will be keen to use William’s visit to burnish his credentials as a reforming leader in a region of dictators.

William pays attention to the Middle East: But the Middle East is a region William follows closely. He is alive to the sensitivities of visiting a regime that continues to be dogged by questions of human rights abuses and the murder of the Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018. Mohammed recently described the killing as a “huge mistake”. Sources close to William say he has become increasingly adept at handshakes and bilaterals with divisive world leaders — pointing to his warm relationship with Trump as a marker of what William knows is required of his role — in the national interest.

A serious global statesman: A royal source said: “William has emerged as a serious global statesman and a discreet but highly effective asset for the UK government. He has shown that, when called upon, he is willing and able to engage and deliver, quietly building bridges where diplomacy requires trust as much as visibility. His engagement on the international stage, including his ability to connect with figures such as President Trump, underlines why he is increasingly viewed as a secret weapon in Britain’s diplomatic toolkit: credible, measured and effective.”

A secret weapon: William is conscious of his growing role as “the UK’s secret weapon of diplomacy” and the importance being placed on the government’s “number one ask of him this year”, following recent high-profile recent visits to Saudi Arabia by Trump, President Macron of France, the chancellor Rachel Reeves, who visited last year and Sir Keir Starmer, who went in 2024. While William is expected to visit the US in the summer, at Trump’s invitation, to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence and to visit India in the autumn for his environmental prize, Earthshot, the Saudi trip is his only scheduled travel this year at the government’s request.

A 40-something man with growing confidence, please clap: William’s engagements in the capital, Riyadh, and the ancient desert city of AlUla, a Unesco world heritage site, will be shaped by the government’s objectives on trade and investment. But due to his growing stature and confidence as a statesman, the programme will also reflect his personal interests, including wildlife conservation and football.

William’s breezy visits: Like Estonia, where William was on the ground for less than 36 hours, the Saudi trip will be quick — just over 48 hours — reflecting his new approach to royal trips. Aides say that, when it comes to William’s vision for “the role that modern monarchy has in diplomacy”, it is “impact”, not endurance, that delivers. The prince makes no secret of scheduling his official work around his home life so that he can prioritise being a present father to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis and will return to the UK in time for his children’s half-term school holiday, which begins on February 13.

William is going there to get Saudi Arabia to invest in the Global Combat Air Programme: There has been concern about the UK’s ability to finance it given strains on the public purse and defence budgets. Saudi Arabia joining would not only make the economics easier — Riyadh is also expected to buy 48 fourth-generation Typhoon fighter jets from UK arms giant BAE Systems. “He’s going out there for a reason,” said one source of the Prince’s visit. “It would be surprising if [his briefing papers] didn’t include GCAP. Royal family visits to Arabian states are for two reasons: to build business partnerships and to keep relationships strong.”

[From The Times]

While I’m no diplomatic heavy, I can read between the lines: the British government is sending William to do some photo-ops and get face time with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman because Britain needs some things from Saudi Arabia and not the other way around. They need Saudi Arabia to buy fighter jets and invest in GCAP and probably several other programs. In typical British fashion, they’re making it sound like William has some kind of tricky agenda or that the Saudis are lucky to see him. Nope. It would probably be too problematic to send King Charles to meet with MBS, so William is all they’ve got. They’re probably praying that William doesn’t blunder into an international incident. And I’m sure some lackey has been sent to read the briefing papers to poor illiterate William too. But he’s a “secret weapon” you guys!! Super-secret.

Have no fear- Willy will be back in time for his next vacay on Feb 13.

    • StillDouchesOfCambridge says:

Oh, they know that cannot leave the village idiot there for more than 48hrs anyway or he’ll risk ruining everything.

    • Blujfly says:

” But due to his growing stature and confidence as a statesman, the programme will also reflect his personal interests, including wildlife conservation and football.”

The first part of this sentence and the second bear no relationship to each other at all. I read John Kerry’s autobiography and during the weeks and months he is helping negotiate the Iran deal he doesn’t make sure the program also reflects his personal interests because of his confidence and stature as a global statesman.

      • kirk says:

Your comment made me sad, nostalgic for a time when I could write my senators arguing in support of something that I thought would be good for the country and the world (Iran deal (JCPOA)). Now all I do is periodically thank them for holding the line against weaselly GOPRepublicans. The townhalls Ive attended are overflowing.

    • BeanieBean says:

Can you imagine having a major publication say that about you? Don’t worry, he’ll be back in time for vacation! Nothing says Top CEO like vacation! 🙄

      • Jais says:

Oh the part about the visit being short and making sure he gets home in time for the kids vacay? I said oh I’m sure.

      • Bqm says:

I think they get digs in there. Either consciously or unconsciously. The focus on mbs and trump, the comment about being back for vacation, the personal interests like football being import ant. I don’t think these always land the way they possibly intend them to.

  2. sunniside up says:

So William and his laziness and bad temper is going to show his concern for the environment by getting more fuel for his helicopters. At least he won’t be able to drink.

    • Jais says:

And why is he being given space in this short visit to talk about his pet projects like the environment. That’s so silly and such a vanity move. Isn’t he there to make deals. Why this embiggening side quest lol?

  3. Crystal says:

“ Sources close to William say he has become increasingly adept at handshakes” – the fact that this is being illuminated as an aspect of him being an incredible statesman is laughable.
Frankly I would have a lot more respect if they just wrote something calmer like “while the Prince of Wales has decided to prioritise some aspects of his personal and familial life, it in no way diminishes his desire to be a vital diplomatic figure in visits that while brief still present impactful change” or something and left it at that.

    • Roo says:

Crystal, the handshakes bit took me out, too! 😆. They forgot to add that William is now potty trained and can go to the bathroom all by himself. This article is surely making fun of him.

Also, Kaiser, full credit for the choice of photos! Perfect. 🤣

      • Indica says:

I’m not sure he can go to the bathroom alllll by himself. That’s a big boy task! And as we can see, Willy is very good at playing in the sandbox. Goooood Willy.

    • Christine says:

I flat out chortled, which is not a noise I knew I could make. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel!

    • BeanieBean says:

I think focusing less on how he wants to be seen & more on what he’s actually doing (I know, I know, he doesn’t really do anything) would be a better strategy.

    • Weatherby says:

@Chrystal: the article reads as heavy sarcasm for this reason.

“The big (middle-aged) grown up boy has gotten SO good at handshakes…”

No one wrote this in earnest.

  4. Tarte Au Citron says:

OMG. He is literally the crown prince. What the hell 😄

  5. Royal Downfall Watcher says:

“Secret” being the operative word. So secret at diplomacy no one notices! So secret he does nothing productive at all in order to maintain his cover! So secret he hides on 10 vacations a year to not blow the secret!

    Bravo!

  6. DeeDee says:

But the Middle East is a region William follows closely. He is alive to the sensitivities of visiting a regime that continues to be dogged by questions of human rights abuses….

This has to be a joke.

  7. Jais says:

To clarify, I’m trying to see if I’m understanding this right. William is meeting with MBS, the same person that Meghan was smeared for being associated with bc she was given earrings to wear by the palace that were a gift from him? But William can actually meet the guy and be praised for diplomacy? Is that what’s happening here? Okaaaay.

    • Mayp says:

      Yup, my thoughts exactly.

And that whole thing about the earrings being a state/diplomatic gift was just crazy. The wedding was coming up and MBS handed them the earrings as a wedding gift for Meghan. She wasn’t there at the official event and wedding gifts are excepted from the rule. Yet, they tweak the rules to argue that they don’t belong to Meghan but to the Royals. AK47 and the Queen flat out stole them from Meghan. She should have just given them back to Saudi Arabia, if she hasn’t already. But I digress….

      • Jais says:

Yeah. I cannot take this seriously.

      • Bqm says:

Wedding gifts are *not* exempted from the rule. Only wedding gifts from family and those with personal connections. Gifts, even wedding ones, from other countries and heads of state are part of the royal collection. This has been the case for over two decades. So the mbs earrings aren’t Meghan’s but her very valuable jewelry wedding gifts from the Queen are.

      • Mayp says:

I beg to differ about whether or not this would be considered part of the royal collection or not. Meghan was not a royal, the earrings were gifted well before her wedding, and she was not at the reception when the gift was to be handed over to Meghan.

Also, importantly, Harry and Megan’s wedding was not a State event, which would go to whether or not they received them in an official capacity.. The royals were very clear about that. Now, Keaton Williams wedding was clearly a state event: however, not long before the wedding they waffled and said that it was a part State event and part non-state event. I believe this was so that the couple could argue that they could keep their wedding gifts in a personal capacity.

I look at it this way: a woman is intending to marry a prince. She receives wedding gifts before the marriage which ultimately is canceled. Should those gifts not be hers to do as she wishes, return, donate or keep?

      • Mayp says:

Below are the relevant rules on accepting gifts and whether they are owned by the royal recipient or become part of the Royal collection. An overarching rule is to not receive a gift it if it appears reasonably to make the recipient beholden to the gifter in a bad way.

Otherwise, the rules distinguish between official and personal gifts, for the latter of which it notes there would be certain responsibilities like, for example, taxes.

Unlike Kate and Williams wedding, Meghan and Harry’s wedding was NOT a state, or “official,” event. The rational for AK-47 and the Queen running off with Mehan’s jewelry is not that wedding gifts do not belong to the giftee but rather that MBS brought Megan’s wedding gift to a reception with the Queen with instructions that they be forwarded to Meghan as a wedding gift. Their rationale for stealing the earrings was, essentially, they were handed over during an official reception. Even though not a part of the reception or a gift to the Queen.

The rules also address the nature of any event to determine whether or not it is official. Again, Harry and Megan’s wedding was specifically denoted as a non-state event by Buckingham palace. It was very quick to downplay the importance of this wedding and rebuke any official capacity.

  8. IdlesAtCranky says:

    I’m sorry, what??

Meghan was raked over the coals for simply wearing a pair of earrings gifted to the BRF by MBS. They didn’t even belong to her, they were assigned!

And now BillyIdle is being tasked by the UK government to go cozy up to the known killer, who has since unbent so far as to call the execution of a journalist a “mistake”????

Will Billy come home with yachts full of cash? Will he ask MBS to provide him “personal entertainment” like his uncle did with Epstein?

Why is it ok with the UK public for these people to be blatantly corrupt?

  9. Tessa says:

Did knauf write the over praise of scooter. So embarrassing

  10. Inge says:

The volleyball pics are what the british public is used too & probably why half the Fail commenters think Harry’s surfing is ai. Nope, the ginger prince is just that good, no wonder W’s been jealous of him all his life.

  11. Me at home says:

US intelligence concluded that MBS approved the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, for Pete’s sake. That the FO chooses to send Bulliam, instead of Charles, to meet with MBS to push the needed missiles sale is NOT a compliment to Bulliam.

I guess the palaces needed a longish piece to distract from the Andrew news? And they’ve exhausted the “Kate braided her hair and ran in heels” angles. So a puff piece on Bulliam it is.

  12. 😂😂😂😂. So he is the secret global statesman now. Is it because they want the Saudi’s business or is it Peg picking up bags of cash? Could be both. As for him being a statesman? No he is the fool they will send and he is out of his league let’s see how he can screw it up.

  13. Tessa says:

Scooter did not bother to finish the duchy management course his father sent him to take. He sent his 12 year old to a memorial for veterans. He could not be bothered to attend. He is jealous of his own brother. Some statesman

  14. Amy Bee says:

So was there no mention of KP accusing MBS of murder and using his gift to the Queen to smear Meghan in this piece?

  15. Murmur says:

I was reading about syphilis and the origins of wigs. It happened to king louis of France when he got it and had hair loss at 17, so he started using wigs to cover it. That’s why in olden times these high society men’s wear wigs.

Maybe that’s why brf is against hair plugs given the historic origin. They know better than we do about these dark history. This might be the reason for billy refusal for hair plugs and cosmetic enhancement because of history and how royal men use cosmetic to hide their disease.

  16. Lady Digby says:

He has shown that, when called upon, he is willing and able to engage and deliver, quietly building bridges where diplomacy requires trust as much as visibility.
When called upon repeatedly, loudly after he’s locked himself behind the perimeter fence at Forrest Lodge and still won’t answer the phone, open the door, answer emails because he’ s on a bender or on another lengthy vacation??
According to the Private Eye the Foreign Office have been pleading for FK to do a lot more to promote UK interests. Visibility? Guy barely works! Bur he’s a great diplomat because he has improved his ability to master the handshake? What kind of dimwit has to learn how to shake hands? No wonder he’s never learnt a foreign language beyond a few stock phrases, can hardly read and goes round pointing at people asking what’s that?

  17. Pam says:

It seems that the only diplomatic touchstone William has under his belt is Trump. How very sad! Both are propped up do nothings.

  18. Nanea says:

So Bulliam the Incandescent, the RF’s not so secret secret (and lazy, uninformed, ignorant) weapon is sent off to Saudi Arabia to “sell” weapons respectively something that only exists on paper so far, the GCAP.

While fighter jet alternatives to the F-35 are needed *now*… — but Scooter Baldimort wouldn’t know that.

No matter what the rota 🐀🐀🐀 do — and after the Times was bought by Murdoch, they’re included — they’re bent on lying.

“Riyadh is also expected to buy 48 fourth-generation Typhoon fighter jets from UK arms giant BAE Systems”

Yeah, no. The Typhoon is a co-production of Airbus, Leonardo of Italy and BAE Systems, which, after Brexit, is only the third wheel.

So, as it’s already been suggested in this thread, Billy Idle is probably tasked with bringing back suitcases full of cash, or tasteless jewellery or similar.

  19. Linney says:

It’s shocking how often the press uses “secret weapon” to describe different members of the royal family. Whether it’s Louise, Sophie, etc., how many times do we have to read that description? But to use it when referring to William is laughable. He does NOTHING. And someone in his position should be using his influence in a positive, visible way. There shouldn’t be anything secret about it. This is just another excuse for his laziness, as in, “He’s not lazy, he’s doing so much behind the scenes. He’s a secret weapon!”

  20. Teagirl says:

This sentence made me laugh out loud
“the Saudi trip is his only scheduled travel this year at the government’s request.”

Do they not real realize how this can be read? It sounds as if it’s the only scheduled travel because the government doesn’t want him doing any international travel because he’s none of the things a leader should be, and cannot and does not effectively represent the UK.

    • Christine says:

I do wonder if William has ever bothered to look at how many overseas trips his father and aunt took, on the queen’s behalf. Does he truly have no shame? I would be so embarrassed, he does nothing of worth.

    • BeanieBean says:

That is pretty funny! Their writers are something else. Also, he’s not going to the US this summer? Or did they forget about that?

      • Jais says:

He may be! But possibly not at the request of the uk govt so much as at the request of trump for vanity reasons. Or it’s William’s idea bc it’s soccer and encroaching on Harry’s “territory.”

    • QuiteContrary says:

He’s such a secret weapon that they are using him one whole time.

  21. SuOutdoors says:

Intelligence-sharing? Not much to share here…

  22. Nic919 says:

The Uk have an egomaniac waiting in the wings who is easily manipulated and most likely compromised by foreign powers at this point.

Right now the UK government still does the big boy work but the Times having to puff up a 44 year old like this is a huge joke.

No one was speaking of Charles at age 44 like he was a special needs kid.

  23. bisynaptic says:

A meeting with Prince Bonesaw! How thrilling!

  24. Shiela Kerr says:

The palace idiot is going because no one else wants to.

  25. Chantal1 says:

As hysterically funny as I find the whole “Wm is the UKs’ secret weapon of diplomacy” wish casting, I can’t even criticize Willy Nilly for this, when Felon47 had MBS in the White House and was grinning in MBS’ face like an idiot. I’m sure billions of dollars were involved. After all, last time he was in office, Jared and Ivanka got $2Billion from Saudi. I doubt they were the only ones who received such “gifts”. And yeah, Brexit really screwed things up and with Felon47 slapping tariffs on allied and non allied nations just bc, and since our trustworthiness is now in question, this is actually a smart move. Many of our trusted allies are forming alliances with nations that wouldn’t have been considered or even possible before 47 again became prez. But the UK should seriously consider giving Wm some lessons in diplomacy, sooner rather than later, bc while azz kissing can be diplomatic, it might not always work and one must have other tools to use.

  26. Julie says:

The Village Idiot 😂😂. These pics destroy me every time.

    • Mayp says:

      Yup, my thoughts exactly.

AK47 and the Queen flat out stole them from Meghan. She should have just given them back to Saudi Arabia, if she hasn’t already. But I digress….

Edit: oops, this was a response to a poster above who pointed out the hell the Press put Meghan through for having received and worn earrings from MBS.

  27. Visa Diva says:

He’s Edward VIII, thoroughly uninterested in any of the hard work of government and diplomacy and only interested in his own needs and comfort.

    • Bqm says:

Edward at least did a lot of overseas tours while POW because his father was too ill. Something William hasn’t even risen to do.

    • Tessa says:

Edward 8 was a popular prince of Wales and did tours and appearances. He was warmly greeted when he did overseas visits.

  28. Lady Digby says:

Has Wilbur gone downhill since he got promoted to PoW? Maybe because he was blonde and bore a strong resemblance to his mother in his twenties he did seem promising then. I remember when his mum died the consolation was that her son would be king and make her proud. I can’t believe he has gone to seed at only 43 , looks are only superficial, after all and no one can help going bald, but he seems so tired, angry and untidy. His presentation is poor and his failure to develop and mature as a well balanced man with a range of interests and dedication to work to help others is saddening. He is supposed to be the heir and yet he seems so unprepared and lacking in knowledge, skills, expertise, experience, and has no desire to improve either. Since late 22 as PoW he should have increased his workload to 500 engagements a year and been doing 2 Royal Tour as well. I genuinely don’t see how he can get away with being so lazy and inept when he does become King.

  29. BeanieBean says:

The BRF visits the Arabian states for their bags of cash. That’s it.

  30. YankeeDoodles says:

This is to reply to @LadyDigby, I don’t think William will become king. He clearly has no interest in the substance of the job. Just the perks, the prestige, for what it’s worth, but he could not be *less* interested in the day to day reality of what it involved. Elizabeth II, Charles III, (though no one refers to him that way), Anne, Diana, Philip, the late Duchess of Kent, all of them made distinct and genuine contributions to public life in the UK and the country’s relationships around the world. They all did the job, and they each did it in a different way. I don’t see William doing any of it. I really can’t picture it. I don’t know what his plan is, but, it seems the closer he gets to the actual moment, the more schizoid he becomes: can’t stop talking about his mission to reform the family and the institution, he’ll crack the whip, etc…. And could not be less engaged in even basic duties like investitures, forget foreign travel. Something’s got to give.
