Telegraph: Why are Prince Harry & Meghan wisely staying silent on Andrew’s arrest?

Hours after Prince Andrew’s arrest last Thursday, People Magazine published an exclusive, with comments from an “insider” with knowledge of how Prince Harry felt as his degenerate uncle was taken into police custody for about eleven hours. According to the insider, Harry was always “frustrated by the comparisons” to Andrew, and “it was never fair to lump them together. Harry served his country, did the job well and never engaged in misconduct — yet lost security and housing, while Andrew was protected for years.” The insider also said that Andrew’s arrest was “sad and embarrassing for the entire family. It leaves a stain on everybody.” I completely agree, as I said.

While I think it’s stupid to press the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to “make a statement” about Andrew, I cannot deny that the two stories are linked. The institution fed Harry and Meghan to the wolves at the same time the institution bent over backwards to protect Andrew. The Sussexes were (and are) constantly used to distract the public from Andrew’s crimes. Harry is under constant terrorist threat but the British police will not protect him in the UK, meanwhile Andrew was chauffeured by his protection officers from the police station after his arrest. Well, instead of taking some ownership over how they ganged up on Harry & Meghan as a way to protect Andrew, the British press is now openly begging the Sussexes to say something. From the Telegraph’s “Why the Sussexes are staying quiet over Andrew’s arrest.”

Amid the noise, the regret and the recriminations, one branch of the Royal family has remained uncharacteristically silent. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have opted not to add their voices to the many who seemingly feel obliged to chime in on Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s cataclysmic arrest and period in police custody. Why? Because for all of Prince Harry’s simmering anger and frustration at being endlessly “lumped together” with his errant uncle, he recognises that, for once, no good can come of pitching in on his family’s shame.

The Duke made his views on Andrew all too clear in his memoir, Spare. It was, he indicated, astonishing to him that while he and Meghan were being stripped of their taxpayer-funded security for simply opting out of the institution and choosing to live abroad, Andrew, who had been accused of sexually assaulting a teenager, faced no such ramifications.

“He was embroiled in a shameful scandal, accused of the sexual assault of a young woman, and no one had so much as suggested that he lose his security,” Harry wrote. “Whatever grievances people had against us, sex crimes weren’t on the list.”

Those two short paragraphs do a lot of heavy lifting. Those bitter rivers run deep. The Duke has long grappled with the fact that Buckingham Palace – both the family and the wider institution – “circled the wagons” on Andrew despite year upon year of tawdry revelations and accusations concerning his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. By comparison, he believes he was unceremoniously cut loose before being torn to shreds for airing the family’s dirty laundry in a slew of extraordinary television interviews. Since then, the propensity to lump Harry and Andrew under one umbrella as “the Dukes of Hazard” has only served to deepen divisions.

The Duke of Sussex had spent 10 years serving his country with distinction. His biggest crimes amounted to little more than an ill-advised fancy dress costume and a few drunken nights out. Why, then, did the family move so swiftly to cut off his funding and his security while Andrew remained protected by the institution for years?

It is hardly a secret that Harry, like his brother William, had never been much of a fan of his uncle, despite his fondness for his cousins Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

Whatever has gone before, the Sussexes are under no illusion about the enormity of Andrew’s arrest and what it means for the monarchy’s reputation. Harry has long railed against injustice. His personal desire for accountability was illustrated by his decision to pursue multiple legal cases against the tabloid press. His opinions, therefore, speak for themselves.

There is little love lost for Harry and Meghan on this side of the pond. But whichever side of the fence one sits, it will surely come as a relief that they finally recognise there are occasions when it is better to simply say nothing at all.

[From The Telegraph]

“…It will surely come as a relief that they finally recognise there are occasions when it is better to simply say nothing at all…” F–k all the way off. Why devote an entire f–king Telegraph article and major coverage to “the Sussexes haven’t said anything about Andrew?” You know who else hasn’t issued any statements about Andrew? His siblings, Princess Anne and Prince Edward. The Duchess of Edinburgh. Andrew’s daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie. Even the heir to the throne only released a tiny little statement of “support” for King Charles’s statement. But you’re going to go on and on about how Harry and Meghan are SO WISELY STAYING SILENT!!

  1. Eurydice says:

Harry already said it. He said it in Spare and The Telegraph repeated it in this article. No need to repeat himself.

  2. Shiela Kerr says:

Agree. Harry made his position known with Spare. The left behinds should speak up.

  3. Z says:

They want Harry and Meghan to say something so they can scream and shout “HOW DARE THEY” They can’t scapegoat them anymore, and the deflection articles are not hitting the same, at least not to anyone with a brain cell.

    • Beverley says:

Agreed. The rota are praying H&M make a statement so that they can make some money digesting, analyzing, crying and throwing up over it. The rota couldn’t care less about what the Left Behinds have to say. They aren’t the least bit interested because those people don’t generate the clicks that stories about the Sussexes do.

  4. Mightymolly says:

💯 %. Their words will have no impact on the outcome and could unleash a storm of rota insanity. Plus, this thing is so far reaching with huge implications stateside. They will have time someday to reflect on how this impacted them but now is not the time.

  5. He said what he wanted in his book! There is no need for him to say more!! The rest of the royals are also quiet and no one is asking why. The wannabe co-king is also silent after all his yammering about how the pedo should be banished suddenly his outrage is very quiet!!

  6. Me at home says:

💯 they’re trying to goad the Sussexes into a statement so they can pick it apart.

That said, at least they’re finally making the comparison with how the BRF coddled and protected Andrew, vs. how they treated the Sussexes for doing so much less. Even if they had to use Harry’s own words to do so.

    • Hypocrisy says:

I was surprised that they included the comparison in this distraction article using the Sussex’s to deflect from the actual leftovers who were part of the decision making that made this problem explode in their faces. The king and Heir should be making statements and I agree amw other siblings should also be making statements because they all knew especially when that settlement was made, they definitely knew. As far as the Sussex’s are concerned I’m sure they are as disgusted and angry as the rest of us who have seen the photos and read the emails, after all they are the only decent ones in that family that’s why they left.

  7. Jais says:

There are people who should be talking. But it’s not Harry and Meghan. I love the fact that the whole family made a point of showing how they still supported Andrew while snubbing the Sussexes. What losers.

  8. LadyE says:

It’s certainly not said explicitly in this article, but if you pay attention to what this piece (despite it’s usual lies about Harry) acknowledges about Harry, there’s an interesting distinction here.

I do actually think both Harry and Andrew are significant threats to the monarchy. But, for totally different reasons. And I think those reasons explain the difference in security and being “in the family” (Christmas walks, family church services, etc).

Harry was a massive asset to the monarchy. Massive. At the time, most popular royal, but more importantly Harry has always been the most popular royal in Commonwealth countries. By a wide margin. I don’t think Harry was punished for his “behavior”, for his Oprah interview, or Spare. I know that’s the narrative. But, I think he was punished for *leaving* the monarchy. They have always known that, contrary to everything they say, that they desperately need Harry IN the royal family. And Harry outside the royal family is a massive risk to them because he is such a popular, upstanding man (not talking about little England, but the Commonwealth and globally) and he shows the uselessness of monarchy itself.

Andrew is the exact opposite. It’s his behavior that is the problem. But, removing his security, taking away his home, all this stuff they avoided doing forever, not because they didn’t want him to stop his behavior, but because it would be counter-productive to having some semblance of control over Andrew. Basically, they needed to keep Andrew *in* the royal family to try to mitigate his grifting terrible behavior. Andrew outside the royal family is a massive risk to them. Because he’s still Prince Andrew to the global public, he’s still reflective of them. And Andrew on his own…who knows what depths this man may fall to?

Anyway, I don’t actually think it’s hypocrisy or that the royal family thinks Harry’s behavior is somehow worse than Andrew. I think the difference in treatment is based on the difference of what they were trying to accomplish between the two.

    • Becks1 says:

I almost completely agree, because I do think there’s an element of hypocrisy there and I do think that William, at least, thinks Harry’s actions were worse than Andrew’s.

But, I DO completely agree that Harry poses a significant threat to the monarchy, maybe even a bigger threat than Andrew to be honest, because he shows that it’s possible to leave the monarchy and THRIVE. Harry is doing more for philanthropy and the public good outside of the monarchy than the royals are doing in it. And that is a very real threat because like you said, it shows the uselessness of the monarchy.

Harry has committed several sins in the eyes of the royals, and the “original sin” so to speak was not being content with his role as Spare (and daring to be better than William, and marrying someone who is better than Kate) and then leaving the monarchy. Even if he and Meghan had stayed silent and never given an interview or written a book, those sins would remain unforgiveable for the royal family.

I think Andrew’s big sin for the royal family is that he embarrassed them and I think that’s part of the current crisis.

      • Mightymolly says:

LADYE & Becks1 – You make really good points and ITA about Harry. Andrew, TBH, is barely even an embarrassment to them because human trafficking is hardly a new concept to the BRF., and he’s played his role perfectly as the dirty rascal that makes the heir look good. If anything, they’re probably more irritated to find the world has changed around them.

But Harry … at least Edward had the decency to live like a common aristo and not make waves. But Harry is demonstrating every day what *modernizing* actually means. And that’s unforgivable.

  9. Amy Bee says:

The Telegraph can eff off. The media’s played a major role in the protection of Andrew and lumping of Harry with him. Although they say it’s wise for Harry to not say something, the reality is they are desperate for a statement from Harry to serve as a distraction and cloak of protection for the Royal Family. People Magazine tried it with that article from an “insider” but it didn’t work. I suspect the insider was somebody from the British press. There is absolutely no need for Harry and Meghan to issue a statement. After years of the press telling them to shut up Harry and Meghan are doing what the press wanted.

  10. E says:

    Never explain, never complain 🙄

Don’t try to make the people (H&M) who were cast out of the royal family do your dirty work for you. I have sympathy for Eugenie and Beatrice because trying to reckon with the awful things their parents did vs their positive experiences with their parents would take years of therapy to process. But the silence of Anne and Edward, as well as Charles’s milquetoast response, is telling.

  11. Brassy Rebel says:

Unpopular opinion here I’m sure, but a simple Sussex statement of support for all victims and survivors of sexual assault, especially of minors, would speak volumes. They haven’t done that yet and I don’t know why.

    • Me at home says:

You’re absolutely right. But they might have figured that they themselves, and criticism of them, would become the story instead of their message.

    • Amy Bee says:

Harry and Meghan putting out any statement now would just shift the focus off of Andrew and the Royal Family’s misdeeds. They’re right not to speak at this time.

    • Harla says:

Respectfully, Why haven’t Anne or Edward issued statements about their brother? Why haven’t Beatrice and Eugenie issued statements about their parents? The Sussex’s owe no one any statement regarding that family, they just don’t.

    • Dee(2) says:

Because Harry and Meghan aren’t treated fairly in the press, and there is an active effort by very powerful people to bring harm to them. Including people that have literally served prison sentences for threatening them.

I get what you’re saying, but they can’t react like any other celebrity. Even for stuff that may be closer to their own orbit. Right now we’re commenting on the article that was written in a national newspaper, about why they haven’t commented on an ongoing active police investigation. They want them to say something. They want to try to tie them in, and opine about what they said and when they said it.

Sometimes you just got to let your reputation speak for you. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind how they feel about the victims of sexual assault. Releasing the statement reinforcing that, when we’re not asking any of the other famous people closely related to or involved with the Windsors’ celebrity or not to do the same just puts again that unfair burden on Harry and Meghan to be all things to all people.

      • Moniquep says:

        Thank you, my sentiments exactly!
Harry and Meghan don’t have to make any statements, their life and work speaks for itself, and anyone who has been following their work fully sees and understands this. No need for them to get involved with this nasty pile of poop.

    • Magdalena says:

Camilla has made “victims and survivors of sexual assault” her “thing” and she has been SILENT. Why not press her for a public statement?

M has been supporting women and girls for many years and continues to do so. Everyone knows that she supports all victims and survivors of sexual assault, especially of minors, even her detractors. So does Harry. There is no need for her to jump onto THIS particular bandwagon when those vipers in the palaces and in the British media (and their American extensions), who have coddled Prince Andrew for years at the expense of HER mental health and indeed, her life and that of her unborn child (and the one she lost), are simply attempting to get fresh material through which to monetise her name for clicks. Best to starve them and keep the spotlight where it ought to be: on the left-over royals and their wicked ways and on the victims.

If they make statements about this case, they will be expected to make statements about every high-profile assault case and let’s face it, there are many such cases the world over, quite likely involving many of the same perpetrators.

Royal reporters are claiming that William is remaining silent because he’s “protecting his family’s mental health” even though the same reporters had claimed that he was “worried about his uncle’s mental health”. No such consideration for H+M and their children. It’s time for the Sussexes to be given the space and grace to protect THEIR mental health for a change, instead of offering themselves up as punching bags all over again – essentially to take a bullet for the royals who abused and endangered them.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

The reason I even bring this up is because right now Harry’s narrative around this subject is very much centered on Harry, that is, his understandable resentment at being lumped in with Andrew. It would be better for everyone to adjust that narrative to center his concern for victims and survivors of sexual abuse rather than himself. As for the rest of the family doing the same, of course they should. But I have extremely low expectations for them, unlike Harry who is the better person.

  12. YankeeDoodles says:

Forgive a Freudian bit of analysis: it’s almost as if they are looking to Harry for leadership. Because the leftovers haven’t provided any. I mean — sure, the King has magnanimously allowed the Thames Valley police onto Crown estate property, having paid lip service to the notion that his brother is not above the law, thanks, m’lord — but Andrew’s story represents a moral failure of the entire institution. From top to bottom, the only person who comes out of this looking good — by contrast — is the one who left. If this were a corporation imploding on account of a bit of dodgy dealing to which a whistleblower had tried — in vain — to draw the attention of management, the whistleblower is the one who would be rightfully seen as vindicated.

    • Harla says:

Excellent analysis! “Andrew’s story represents a moral failure of the entire institution”. I couldn’t agree more!

  13. Al says:

The title of the article, to me, insinuates/suggests that Harry and Meghan are somehow involved in the whole Epstein scandal and are wise to keep quiet.

  14. Tessa says:

Scooter had a party glorifying colonialism at his out of Africa party . He did not apologize. And he got worse for wear at clubs and was caught at a bachelor weekend leaving keen and their young children. Philip never apologized for racist comments. Yet harry is still called out even though he did publicly apologize.

  15. Gemini says:

Not only the royal family and the institution protected Andrew, Sarah and the daughters, I think all of the Yorks, yes all of them leaked on Harry and Meghan to keep the press silent about themselves. I won’t change my mind on this.

    • Pebbles says:

I agree with you on this. Them being comfortable being papped with Piers Morgan and his wife and sharing flights with Clarkson to F1 events. They have absolutely no dignity or respect for their cousin Harry and his wife. They spared themselves by leaking things. I believe the one who did the most leaking to Piers etc was Fergie. She was trying desperately to rehab her image and get on any show.

  16. Lady Digby says:

BbC news have an entire article debating whether the King should address the nation about Andrew and how badly this is affecting Will and affecting HIS future as monarch.
Andrew is Prince William’s problem too – and it makes his future job harder – BBC News https://share.google/nZSfCgGsUDzisyeof
One of the few Reform MPs actually expressed his sympathy for the RF today and only belatedly including the actual victims of Epstein and co !! Andrew is a rotten apple coddled and protected by his mother and the Firm for decades so my sympathy is exclusively reserved for the only real victims in this: Virginia and the other trafficked girls.

  17. L4Frimaire says:

It’s really tiring and so obvious how they try to make every royal problem and scandal center in some way around Harry and Meghan, when it has nothing to do with them. Then they act surprised when Harry thinks it’s wrong to consider him leaving with his wife the same as what Andrew has done. Seriously, while Andrew stays protected. As for airing dirty laundry, the only thing Harry and Meghan did was say how that family did them dirty. He didn’t say anything about their many personal flaws and f*ck-ups. Anything they say will benefit that institution at their expense. This mess is still unraveling and frankly it’s not the Sussexes business and way above their pay grade.

  18. Jayna says:

Uh, because he’s not a working royal, as the British media point out multiple times a day, and it’s not his place to. No one in the BRF has, except King Charles and Prince William, through the first statement from BP, or wherever it came from, and also through William’s multiple leaks about being the strong one regarding ousting Andrew. The British press would have a field day if Harry inserted himself into this right now.

    • BLACK ELDERBERRY says:

William only has his “opinion” when someone more important voices it. He’s such a disgusting coward it makes you sick.
Charles ordered the four of them to take a walk after Elizabeth’s funeral, which Buckingham Palace later confirmed, but of course, William’s first words after getting out of the car at the flower gate were: “It was my idea to come together.”

      MY, ME, ME, MINE… Harold…
…and who says such things publicly anyway?

After the war broke out in Ukraine, he was the last person to speak, offering a smile to the Ukrainians.

Now, after Charles’s statement, William immediately shouts: “ME, ME, I ALWAYS SAID…” and suddenly posts a whole bunch of shots to the media, trying to fit the narrative: “I always dodge Andrzej.” And the ones where they’re friends, when he takes him on a plane, when they laugh together, he put them in the back of a drawer. A terribly small man and a great coward.

  19. Tara says:

Why the Sussexes are staying quiet over Andrew’s arrest. – If one keeps relations with his family he does not need to do that in public, which was Harry’s modus operandi all along.

  20. Chelsea says:

The telegraph is so ridiculous. Harry and Meghan never make comments about what the left behinds are doing because it’s the left behinds are who obsessed with THEM. The only exception to this in the last 6 years was when they released that statement wishing Kate well and her family privacy after her cancer reveal and tbh im not even sure they should’ve done that but theyre genuinely decent people so I digress. Also the removal of the security was before any interview or Spare so it’s a lie to say Harry was being punishing for his public comments when they did that. They punished him for having the audacity to leave when they refused to stop abusing his wife and using her as a scapegoat to cover for amongst other things Andrew’s mess.

  21. 809Matriarch says:

    @brassyrebel

There’s a reason your “unpopular opinion” would be considered unpopular.

Harry and Meghan are not even considered or TREATED like members of that cult like Klan. Meanwhile, they quietly DO support families who suffered devastating losses through online predation through Archwell. Meghan before marrying Harry, became the embodiment of Christ’s declaration:

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, Ineeded clothes and you clothed me…”
(Smart works, Hubb Community Kitchen, Sentebale)

Their deeds have said and continue to say all that needs saying. Unlike the Left Behinds on the Isle of Salt, they don’t need to comment or virtue signal.

Proverbs 14:23 states that “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”

All H&M need to do is what they’re already doing. All they need to say, is 😶IMHO.
