One of the craziest parts about Game of Thrones is how much of the story hinges upon relatively “recent” history within the universe. That history: Robert’s Rebellion, which happened roughly seventeen years before the events of the first GoT book and the first season of the show. Within the GoT story, we hear more and more about various events around Robert’s Rebellion, and obviously, the big reveal about Jon Snow’s real parents is a huge part of both timelines. Given how much time and energy everyone invested into GoT, you would think that the most basic fan-service would be a spinoff show or a movie about Robert’s Rebellion, correct? Wrong. Instead, HBO has given people Dunk & Egg and that Dragon show which has never caught on with even a fraction of GoT loyalists. Well… get ready for even less fan-service.
Winter is coming to the big screen. A “Game of Throne” movie is in the works at Warner Bros. from “House of Cards” showrunner and “Andor” writer Beau Willimon. He already submitted a draft, according to Page Six Hollywood, which broke the news of the project. A director hasn’t been set, nor have any cast members.
However, the outlet noted it’s unclear whether the “Game of Thrones” film will actually be made given the news that Warner Bros. is in the process of being sold to Paramount Skydance. If the merger is approved, new management could scrap the movies in development. At the same time, “Game of Thrones” is one of the company’s crown jewels — and Paramount’s CEO David Ellison has pledged to release 30 films theatrically once the two media giants become one. That means they’ll need plenty of material to populate their joint slates.
Although plot details haven’t been confirmed, the story is reportedly about Aegon I, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, and his conquest of Westeros a few centuries before the original “Game of Thrones” television series. Aegon I has never appeared on screen. But the royal family — which eventually spawned the ice-blonde Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke — has been the basis for HBO’s two successful spinoff series, “House of the Dragon” (which returns this summer) and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” (which just finished its first season). Based on the best-selling fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin, “Game of Thrones” ran for eight seasons and earned enough Emmys to fill the Seven Kingdoms.
I have a real question: for all of the power players within the GoT IP, do they ALL think that the Targaryens are the most interesting characters of Westeros? Is it literally just the white-blonde hair and dragons, which is really boring when the show is just ALL Targaryen. I will say again: if you want to pull in the same people who watched GoT obsessively, give us the definitive version of Robert’s Rebellion. Give us Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Give us the Mad King murdering Ned Stark’s older brother. Give us a young Jamie Lannister becoming the Kingslayer. Then give us Jon Arryn slowly realizing what was going on within the Lannister family. These people never listen to me!!

I find House of the Dragon dull with none of the intrigue or humor or even light of GOT. Everything seems to take place in or next to dark castles with threatening skies. Rhys Ifans is underused and there’s no equivalent to many of the colorful, interesting, amusing characters of Game of Thrones like Tyrion, Olenna, Littlefinger, Arya, Brienne of Tarth.
For those reasons, I was hesitant to watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms but I was pleasantly surprised when I did. The episodes are short and breezy. Targaryens are central but they aren’t the only family represented. There are Baratheons and Fossoways and a Lannister and mention of Starks and Dorne and references to the family of Brienne. IT IS FUNNY! And the child actor playing Egg is amazing. He’s a kid playing a kid who instantly can go from childish stable boy to commanding prince in a second. I really enjoyed it and look forward to season 2 and their next adventures.
I’ve tried so hard to get onboard with HotD, but I can’t do it. The pacing is just all over the f–king place. They’ve been speeding the events along, but it still feels like an eternity.
I loved AKotSK so much. The only disappointment was that it was only 6 episodes and we have to wait for for the next fix. Perfect comfort watching. It’s hilarious, but hits the serious notes, like Dunk’s backstory (that hit me so hard for some reason!) incredibly well, too. And the characters are fleshed out so well. Like, while reading the book, I never imagined Lyonel Baratheon as “a cross between Jack Sparrow and Ernest Hemingway”, but it felt perfect, and I think I’m slightly in love with that character now (I guess it helps that he looks a lot like my husband. And using the words “f–k” and “c–t” that frequently? That’s a man after my own heart, lol).
Robert’s Rebellion makes more sense since we are already invested in those characters!
I loved the Dunk and Egg stories though, and hope there will eventually be another way to watch it because I’m not subscribing.
What about the Wildlings and the Night Watch – I’d love to see a story about Benjin Stark. And what about the backstories in the Great Houses, would love to go meet the other characters that are only mentioned briefly in the books (Willard Tyrell for instance).
And lets not forget the Red Viper – anything for more Pedro as Prince Oberyn.
I’d love to see something about old Valyria, where there is no noted ‘history’ as such so anything could be written & made into a series/film. Or Arya Stark and stories about her sailing west, I know this is future ‘history’ but I think it would be in the same vein as Dunk & Egg, more light but serious at times. Sometimes book canon holds writers back in what can be put on the screen, let’s give them some free rein.
Like the fore mentioned, I went into Dunk & Egg hesitantly but I was so very happy I watched. It is really awesome. And the casting like GoT is awesome
Sorry I totally disagree with the writer and totally on board with the story of Aegon. I have always said that it would be better to do a prequel telling the beginning of the story of the Targaryen dynasty not House of Dragons. I found Aegon to be much more interesting. He was the one that united that conquered and united the 7 kingdoms, saw vision in the night king/white walkers and civilization being wiped out, he seen that someone in his bloodline would be the prince that was promise. So I want to see how it’s played out.
