A lot of people have blocked out or forgotten the craziness over Karla Sofia Gascon’s Oscar nomination last year, and how her campaign was torpedoed when people began translating her tweets. Once translated, Gascon’s tweets were a buffet of bigotry, racism and pro-Nazi sentiments. It was really wild. Well, last year’s controversial Oscar nominee had some thoughts on this year’s Oscar controversy: Timothee Chalamet’s horrible comments about ballet and opera. Gascon was asked about the controversy and she replied on her Instagram: “Are you a Trans woman? Then don’t worry about it, Tim. Besides, I love ballet slippers and I’ve seen Phantom of the Opera ten times. Not sure if that counts for anything. Best of luck with the awards.”

Meanwhile, they’re truly asking every actor, every ballet dancer, every opera singer, every conductor and every pop culture analyst about Chalamet’s comments. I haven’t seen an actor shoot themself in the foot like this in a while! They asked poor Juliette Binoche about it too – Juliette was just minding her business, she has no connection to Chalamet! But she chimed in anyway.

Academy Award-winning French actor Juliette Binoche took a playful jab at Timothée Chalamet on Wednesday when asked to weigh in on the “Marty Supreme” Oscar nominee’s recent comments about ballet and opera.

During “A CNN & Variety Town Hall Event” last month, Chalamet said that he didn’t want movie theaters to go the way of “ballet or opera,” where artists want to “keep this thing alive” even though “no one cares” about it anymore. Questioned about the remarks during a lively Q&A session at Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival, Binoche quipped: “I thought cinema was a dying art.”

Towards the tail end of the Q&A, an audience member asked the Oscar-winning star of “The English Patient” what she thought about Chalamet’s viral comments, which drew the ire of pundits ranging from London’s Royal Ballet and Opera to “The View” hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin to ballet dancer Misty Copeland, who helped to promote “Marty Supreme.” Binoche, who was briefly flummoxed by the question, needed to be brought up to speed on the controversy before brushing it aside.

“It doesn’t matter what he’s saying. It doesn’t matter. Don’t make it big,” she said. “What nourishes your heart and soul is what is important. You can watch a lot of films that are empty and make you dry at the end. What counts is what is nourishing your soul and life.”

“I thought cinema was a dying art…” To be fair, that was one of the larger points being made by Chalamet at his CNN event – he didn’t want cinema to become a dying art, he wants to make movies which people want to watch in theaters. The problem was that he cited opera and ballet as dying or dead art forms. But Binoche’s point holds – figure out what you enjoy and support it, who gives a sh-t what Timothee says.
