Anne Hathaway vs. Meryl Streep at the first ‘Prada’ event: who had the cuter look?

Anne Hathaway has two films coming out in the next month. First up is Mother Mary, with a limited release on April 17. Then the big one, The Devil Wears Prada 2, out on May 1st. I’m very interested in the box-office analysis around Devil/Prada because it’s a decades-past sequel to an all-time classic, and it does feel like the promotion is just going to be geared solely to women. Are they expecting huge things financially, or are the expectations more “slow burn”?

Anyway, here are some photos of the first promotional stop for the Prada sequel – earlier this week, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep did a big event in Mexico City. It looks like they walked a runway, get it?? Meryl wore a Schiaparelli gown (and tote) while Anne wore Stella McCartney dress and boots. Wow… Meryl looks so fashion forward and cool, while Anne looks like an early ‘00s reject with the flared dress and the terrible boots. This promotional tour will be fascinating.

As for Anne’s other film, Mother Mary, a new trailer dropped this week. You can hear Anne really singing a song called “My Mouth Is Lonely for You.” It was written and produced by FKA Twigs. They’re releasing all of the music Anne performs (in character) in the film, and this is the “second single.” She plays a Lady Gaga-esque pop star named Mother Mary, and Mary crashes out and goes to find her old collaborator and former friend, played by Michaela Coel. While I’m glad that Anne gets to say yes to experimental “weird” films like this, I don’t actually want to watch this whatsoever.

I have always thought Stella McCartney was overrated. Those boots are hideous.
Meryl is a goddess and I am excited for the movie!!

    • Josephine says:

Overrated is the kindest way to say it. I think her clothes are consistently unflattering and ugly. I remained stunned that she is considered a designer.

I really really really hope the script is good. TDWP is a hard act to follow. Fingers crossed for this movie. Oh, and Anne’s outfit is….garish.

  3. Normades says:

Anne’s outfit is tragic. Not feeling Meryl’s look either

  4. Jayna says:

Anne usually gets it so right. I don’t get those boots at all. The hem to that dress is horrible. The whole outfit is a miss, except the shade of the dress is flattering to her features and dark hair. But her face, makeup, and hair are a win.

  5. OpheliaAEA says:

    Meryl’s tote is fab.

  6. MFS says:

I kinda love the boots, but then I’m a sucker for a bold pair of shoes.

Anne’s dress, however, is a no for me. Between the sparkles, puff sleeves, and short hemline, it’s too little girlish for her. And Meryl’s dress, while better, fits poorly and the fabric looks a bit cheap.

  7. LOLA says:

Stella McCartney fits are awful. I don’t know what type of mannequin or measurements they use but they fit horribly. I’ve tried on various things over the years, and the cuts were so awkward. I know it could be my body type but it seems strange that the clothes consistently fit weirdly. I tried on some bras too and the were the weirdest and most uncomfortable fit I’ve ever had.

I vehemently dislike both looks on Anne and Meryl! Yikes! But I’m excited about their film!

  8. Giddy says:

Love Meryl, but that dress looks an awful lot like one I made in Home Ec in high school, and I got a C+ on it. The fit is bad, the hem is wonky, the sleeves are too long, and the belt really does look like a tragic homemade effort. C+.

  9. MaisiesMom says:

I’m not wild about either but I especially don’t like Anne’s red sequined number or boots. They both look great, just don’t care for the clothes.

  10. KC says:

Wooooowwwww do I hate those boots.

  11. MoxieMox says:

Just here to say that if Meryl has had work done, it’s very subtle and excellent. She looks fantastic.

  12. KC2 says:

Oh Anne! Major fail, and she’s usually one of the best dressed.

  13. olliesmom says:

I am so exited about this movie. I really hope that it lives up to the first one. The previews look really promising so far.

  14. Jane says:

Love them both and can’t wait to see the movie. Both outfits are tragic.

  15. Kirsten says:

I’m more excited for Mother Mary than TDWP. I also think Anne’s dress is cool AND her boots are cool but they are not cool together.

  16. Little Red says:

Meghan’s evening reception dress must have been a fluke because that was a Stella McCartney design as well.

  17. paintybox says:

Well, one sure thing is they utterly clash in those looks.

  18. Sue says:

I am in my magpie era in which I love all things sparkly. So I love Anne’s dress. The boots look too big for her like she’s a little kid playing dressup in her mom’s boots. Meryl looks regal.

  19. Mel says:

Honestly, both are hideous. Anne Hathaway is wearing an ice dancing costume with waders for fishing. For why?

  20. TN Democrat says:

Meryl’s outfit is less bad, but neither is great. Anne’s McCartney look is terrible from top to bottom. Meryl’s dress needed better tailoring. It doesn’t necessarily need to be tight, but it is just wonky and not sharp. I am in my oh, crap I just tripped randomly again era. I would end up in the er if I wore either shoe/boot.

  21. therese says:

Through the years I have thought that Stella wasn’t the most talented designer, but that every now and then she would have a win. I consistently hate what Meryl is wearing. It’s kind of like my anger at how Camilla always (almost) wears house dresses. I feel that way about Meryl. I loved how beautiful she looked in the first movie, especially her hair. And her wardrobe: I really don’t like the clothes she wears on the red carpet, etc. Nor her hair. I just appreciate her uniqueness and the fact that she doesn’t look like everyone else and is so different. Just wish she would work it a little and set off her beauty instead of underplaying it.
