Gwyneth Paltrow “feels bad” for Brad & Angelina

goopcover2

Gwyneth Paltrow is the cover girl for the May issue of Harper’s Bazaar, so be forewarned, PEASANTS. Harper’s introduces the interview (here for the full piece) with this: “She might portray the immaculate girl in a gilded world, but fashion icon Gwyneth Paltrow is far from perfect. And she likes it that way.” Hahaha, I love when Dame Gwyneth attempts to be approachable to us fat, depressed minions so obviously less than worthy of her pearls of wisdom. Oh, it’s on, bitches. You know this sh-t is going to be good.

First, a word about the photo shoot: is anyone getting a Candace Bergen vibe from this? The hair is very Candy Bergen, although I think Bazaar was aiming for (as always with Gwyneth) “Grace Kelly ice princess” but they ended up with “glazed-eyed, aging WASP, stuck in her staid apartment because of her crippling agoraphobia”. The white is horrible too, it looks like a bridal photo shoot – ugh, I really don’t like the way Gwyneth is styled at all. Even though I abhor her personality, I acknowledge that she’s a pretty woman, and they made her look terrible. Okay, onto the interview! Here are the best highlights:

Gwyneth Paltrow on her diet of “fried chicken and booze” for her role in Love Don‘t Let Me Down: “The director, Shana Feste, didn’t want me to have any definition whatsoever, so I had to stop working out,” says Gwyneth, balefully eyeing her bod. “I was so bad with the food and alcohol in Nashville. If you saw me naked compared to what I looked like when I did Iron Man 2, when I was exercising every day—I’ll get it back together, but I’ve never eaten so much fried food and white flour in my life, ever. Oh, God,” she groans as she wryly snaps a spindly breadstick in two. This from the poster girl of health and wealth, oh my.

On drinking: “I’m not having anything to drink. I’m usually such a wino, they must be wondering what’s going on.” Then, she tucks heartily into a plate of risotto al Barolo topped with Castelmagno cheese.

Name-dropping Kate Winslet: “I don’t know how people do it. I was just at a photo shoot with Kate Winslet, and I was like, ‘How the f-ck do you do this? I don’t understand.’ Kate said, ‘I know, it doesn’t work. Everyone falls apart. I haven’t worked in 20 months.'”

On being exhausted but happy: “Some days I feel like everyone in my world has plugged themselves into my kidneys. I’m so tired,” she says with a sigh. She even pulled out of a movie with Nicole Kidman, The Danish Girl. With the shoot changing locales, Gwyneth found it too taxing for her little ones. Not to mention that her husband, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, has an equally complex tour schedule. She does readily admit, however, “When you’re having dinner with your kids and your husband and someone says something funny or you’re dying laughing because your three-year-old made a fart joke, it doesn’t matter what else is going on. That’s real happiness.”

She hasn’t done any difficult acting in years: But save her latest part as a down-on-her-luck chanteuse, she hadn’t done anything really emotionally draining since having kids; to wit, she was in both Iron Man movies and Running with Scissors. “Proof was the last really tough role that I did, and I was pregnant with my daughter then.”

On her work on Iron Man: “Iron Man was heaven,” she says. “The kids could come every day. They had their mini Jeep that they drove around the parking lot in front of my trailer. I wasn’t naked or crying like on the Nashville movie, where it was like, ‘No, you can’t visit Mommy today.’ This was a much different thing. But professionally, I did feel so ‘Oh, my God, yes, this is what I do. You know, this is me.'”

On not being the It Girl anymore: “You never know if you’re going to be in or out of favor. Or if you’re going to get a good part. I’ve been through everything from being at the top of the A list and then ‘No, they don’t really see you for this part.'”

Robert Downey Jr. on the Goopster: “The press loves her and knows she’s talented, but now they just want to see how hot she looks in those Louboutins. Or whatever crazy shoes. She was practically wearing things that had goldfish swimming around in the heels,” recounts her amused costar. “She knows how to go large, and she knows how to be that thing and that person, and then the rest of the time she’s wearing a pair of yoga pants and steaming some cod or something.”

On the rumors that Goopy & Madonna are fighting: “That’s hilarious. Sometimes I’m just acting for other people.”

Even more name-dropping! “The hotel concierge is not telling me where to get a facial, Christy Turlington is. Doesn’t everyone want to know that? I would want to know if you went to Mario Batali’s house what he made you for dinner and could I have the recipe. So why not?” she asks earnestly.

More on how she sees her GOOP: “There was a brouhaha in the beginning there, which I thought was very interesting, because people don’t like you to step outside of your box,” she says. “Also, journalists are terrified of celebrities having a journalistic voice. You can spend your life worrying about it or you can just do what you’re doing. Especially if you’re doing something just to be nice, just to share and have fun.” She’s not trying to brand herself as a domestic goddess à la Martha Stewart. She has no backers, isn’t looking for any, has only one person in her employ, and actually spends “a ton” of her own money producing the site. “I don’t have advertisers or anything, and I would never want to,” she says.

On her husband and her marriage: And while Gwyneth is happy to talk about everything from detoxing to her father’s death, she keeps the inner workings of her six-year marriage private. Much has been made of the couple’s pact to avoid appearing together publicly, but she has only positive words for him—especially about when she was working so hard to nail her part as a singer and had to learn to play guitar. “He was so helpful, so sweet and encouraging. I mean, it’s embarrassing to be playing in front of your husband, especially when he’s in one of the world’s most successful bands. He is so great because he’s so supportive of me as an artist,” she continues. “He loves the fact that I’m working and was so fulfilled by this job that I did in Nashville. He’s my biggest supporter. He’s always like, ‘We’ll make it work.’ But when I pulled out [of The Danish Girl], he said, ‘I think you’ll be happy with your decision.’ I really lucked out with him. He’s deeply lovely and special.”

On the paparazzi: “The thing about the paparazzi, I realized, is it’s probably made me look like a really grumpy person,” she explains. “Because when you get a magazine and you see someone with a scowl on her face, looking down, you’re like, ‘God, she looks like a bitch’ or ‘She looks like an unhappy old lady.’ But when you’re the person they’re taking the picture of, it’s like, ‘You just followed me and made my kid cry and you’re going to make money off it? You want me to look at you and smile? Are you out of your mind?'”

On Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: The myriad tabloid covers of Brad Pitt, her ex, and Angelina Jolie that are hard to miss. “Every time, they’re like, ‘Their marriage is in crisis!’ or whatever. And you’re just like, ‘Well, you always write that about me, and it’s never right, so I can only assume it’s not right.’ I feel bad for them. They have it worse than anybody on the planet. I mean, we get hounded too, but not like that.”

Even more name-dropping: “I really felt like I was 15. I wanted to take a picture. I didn’t! But I was like, ‘Oh, my God—Bono, the Edge. I can’t believe I’m sitting here and no one’s telling me to get out.’ Like, I’m allowed to be here.”

On balance: “Big changes always regenerate things. Because otherwise, you plateau,” she says. “Life is about the plateaus and the valleys and mountains. You don’t want to be on only the plateau, you know, you’ve got to shake it up.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

Epic. My favorite quality about Gwyneth is that she wouldn’t be able to live if she couldn’t name-drop all of the people she knows or who she parties with or who she feels bad for – I’m sure Brad and Angelina can take comfort in Goopy pity. Other than that… I ended up feeling sorry for her when she was talking about her marriage. I do think she loves Chris Martin, and I think she worries that he’s bangin’ Kate Bosworth and God knows who else while he’s touring. But notice that she makes it all about her and her stuff, her career, how he feels about her? That’s because Dame Goopy is the most important person in the world.

I have not seen any pictures of her and her hubby, which I find kind of strange.

  2. Rachel says:

    Love her!

  3. bite me says:

    love this bitch

  4. Red Folder says:

I’m bored bored bored by her.

I find her Goop site ridiculous and demeaning. It’s just a digital extension of her ego. And not a very interesting extension at that. . .

Why are there never any pictures of Chris Martin with the children—ever? Honestly, I find that just as weird as their obsession of never being photographed together. It’s just weird.

Or is the fact there is not enough room for both egos in one picture?

  5. vale says:

I love her. Honestly, lots of people in the upper crust wouldn’t dare share facialists or anything exclusive to us peons so I totally agree with her idea for Goop. Nothing she says seems snotty to me, just sincere.

  6. isabelle says:

Oh come on, ladies: she looks great.

  7. christina says:

I have liked her since Shakesphere in Love…such a great movie!

  8. Sudini says:

It’s so nice to hear from people who like Gwyneth or at the very least don’t spit on her. I’ve never had a problem with her. I just don’t think she’s all that snooty. I think it’s one of those things that some people have become programmed to think.

  9. J says:

Why do people always say Jennifer Aniston’s interview is boring? Ms Paltrow obviously gives the most boring, most preditable, most political-correct interviews on this planet ever.

This woman doesn’t know how boring she is. Her oscar-winning role in “Shakespeare in Love” is the most boring performance (not disastrous, just boring, especially with the accent) I have ever seen in a Shakespeare-related drama.

  10. Lisa says:

Wow she does look a lot like Candace Bergen in these pictures. Despite what a lot of people say about Gwyneth, I have always liked her. That being said, for some reason this interview with her irritated me.

  11. Charity is Chic says:

Was this photo shoot a joke or something? Why on earth would anyone want to come off looking that pretentious?

Is she the queen of some imaginary kingdom I don’t know about?

  12. Green Is Good says:

    “Dame Gwyneth”. Ha ha ha!

  13. Sumodo1 says:

This elitist photo shoot is abhorrent. Especially the pictures with the little boy. Creepy!

  14. Kate says:

It’s hardly name-dropping when you’re more famous than the name dropped. Christy Turlington, name-dropping for Goop, really? Gwyneth seems like a really sweet, bright woman. I do agree that the styling on this shoot is awful, and she’s not as photogenic as a model, ie, she looks better moving, in movies.

  15. Whatever says:

Why doesn’t this b#^%$ just go away. She’s like Paris part 2, the hoity toity version and if possible with worse acting skills. Ugh! Go away, how Blythe could have raised such a stuck up self righteous, holier than thou…. Ugh!!!! Just go away already

  16. Cinderella says:

She is starting to appeal to my soft side. She really is.

Her last issue of GOOP is great if you have young kids. Very good book recommendations.

  17. Katalina76 says:

I just think it’s weird that she chose the words “lovely and special” to describe her husband. Those aren’t usually words used to describe people, more like a description of a dress or something.

  18. Alexa says:

I’m seeing Ivana Trump in the first and third pics – and Terri Garr in the second and fourth pics. Anyone else?

  19. danielle says:

Snort – I love reading Goop posts, just ’cause she’s so ridiculous.

  20. Melinda says:

I think she looks really pretty.

  21. kristen says:

I absolutely love how Gwynnie looks here!

This is when she is at her best- Grace Kelly Ice Queen for us peons.

BTW, if you can get past her ego, GOOP is a pretty good read

  22. e. says:

totally hear you on the candy bergen thing. the had just popped into my mind and then i read your observation. i think it’s the hair shade and style.

  23. Sigh. says:

On the rumors that Goopy & Madonna are fighting: “That’s hilarious. Sometimes I’m just acting for other people.”

    I don’t get that response.

I don’t like or dislike Paltrow, but she brings the snob perception on herself. And this photoshoot does not help. I don’t think she does it on purpose, she just can’t hear how she sounds in print. Her phrasing and choice of descriptives are not for my humble Midwest American ears, I guess.

EDIT: But I don’t think real journalists are “terrfied” of celebrities. Most people do NOT look at them as journalists. Spokespersons, lobbyists, but not journalists.

  24. martini says:

Ru Paul’s ‘Drag Race’ all the way.

  25. Wholesome1 says:

She was born rich and famous and probably pampered- that’s not snobbery, that’s life’s lottery. And it’s not name-dropping if you’re talking about your own circle of friends. People envy her so they run her down. She works at her career, works at keeping fit and it appears that she works at being a mom and wife- what’s not to admire? I like her films. She’s very talented.

  26. Kate says:

I’m sorry…. when was she ever at “the top of the A list”? A list yes… the top of it though? And since when is Coldplay “one of the most successful bands in the entire world”? Yes, they’re good and popular places other than the US, but the last hit song I’ve heard from them was Viva la Vida like 2 years ago. She’s delusional, and the way she spoke in this interview made her sound like a stuck up bitch. I half expected her to add “dahling” to the end of every sentence.

  27. Ellen Smith says:

She has obviously had plastic surgery, most notably to her upper eye area. Of course, with air brushing and photoshopping maybe they just painted new eyelids on her face.

  28. PB&J says:

She looks beautiful. I love the hem of that white dress. She may be softening me up – she comes across as sweet and fun to me in this interview. She doesn’t pretend to live a “normal” life. She’s a movie star!

  29. Scarlet Vixen says:

‘Obviously’ had plastic surgery? um…what? Maybe you haven’t heard of this new-fangled technology called air-brushing. They use it on everyone–Parenting magazine prolly uses it on the babies they use for their covers, too.

@Kate: I don’t know what rock you’ve been living under, but Coldplay is one of the biggest bands in the world right now. Their last album was massive. I’m not a fan, I’m just stating the facts. Just because they’re not U2 (um, who is??) doesn’t mean they’re not uber successful.

I happen to be a Gwynnie fan–have been for ages and ages. I love her, and think she’s genuine and earnest and that unfortunately reads as snobbery to some people.

  30. RHONYC says:

    ‘i feel bad’ too…

i feel bad that blythe danner at ages 57 & 61 in both movies ‘meet the parents (2000)’ and ‘meet the fockers (2004)’ has a range, approachablity, humor & grace that seems to have *a-hem* skipped a generation entirely.

goopy’s mom STILL has an audience.

get lost goopy & get a clue.

    *eyeroll*

  31. Katalina76 says:

I completely forgot to mention that I love what RDJ said. Definition of a back-handed compliment. “steaming some cod”? Hilarious. Heels with goldfish swimming in them? Hilarious.

  32. Jez says:

Seriously I know I’m being a little anal retentive/English teacher-ish but someone needs to read over these posts before you post them.It can’t be that hard.

Gwyneth attempts to approachable to us
    You mean..
Gwyneth attempts to BE approachable to us?

  33. Kelaa Khaa says:

Whatever – your comment made me see a strong resemblance between Goopy and Paris Hilton. I wonder if Goop ever gets mistaken for Paris? That would be a fun read on her site.

  34. Macheath says:

I really don’t get the hate for this woman. Really don’t.

  35. Shawna says:

Most of those pictures are completely laughable, but boy, what wouldn’t I do to get in that tartan skirt/equestrian-ish outfit?! Sweet.

I don’t mind her preaching about food — outside of the detox crap. Her stuff about eating fresh foods is good stuff. People are loving Jamie Oliver right now for it, but we hate her for it…partially b/c like she said, we put her in a box, and partially b/c of the snooty tone.

  36. Trashaddict says:

People are hard on her because she moans about having to EAT for a part in a world where people starve, and feels SORRY for Brad and Angelina, who probably know better than to feel sorry for themselves. She’s just asking to be ridiculed.

  37. cara says:

she’s boring.I’ve been reading other interviews she’s done and all I hear is how “stressed” she is having her children..she has nannies, she has money, she can work anytime, she can work at the gym for 3 hours a day,she can wear all the latest clothes, and all I hear in her interviews is her complaining she is STRESSED.
I believe she complains more then any other actor out there

  38. Crash2GO2 says:

Good Lord she is pretentious. LOL! But harmless. I mean really. “If you could see me naked..” I can’t find it in me to dislike her at all. I just want to pat her on the head and give her a nice treat. Then tell her to go away and call me when she’s done another really great movie like ‘Sense and Sensibility’.

  39. Blitz says:

Paltrow. She is a very gifted actress, no question. It’s easy to forget about her though because after she hooked up with Martin and had a family she seemed to work a lot less, which I guess makes sense. But her talent is certainly enviable, or at least was.

  40. Istanem says:

I don’t get why so many people want to pull her down. She’s educated, she speaks nicely, she likes nice things, she enjoys learning and is interested in looking after herself. She keeps her kids and private life with her husband to herself, so what ? What has she done to anyone that’s so horrible ? She made a website about enriching your life – oh sorry, am I allowed to say “enrich” or is that too snobby. Let’s cruicify her shall we ? Jealous much ???

  41. SallyJay says:

    @Istanem – well said.
@ the commentators who say she’s not talented – she is an amazing actress. Seen Proof? get it. Really don’t understand the hate directed towards her. Just give her a break.

  42. j. ferber says:

Her son (if that’s actually him) looks like he’ll give her a lot of trouble in later life. Just saying.

  43. snapdragon says:

    she is so vanilla.

  44. Amy says:

She is a sophisticated woman, but she can be very cantankerous.Very gossipy.

  45. UrbanRube says:

I think she looks great. I assume her arrogance is in-bred and terminal, but it sort of seems as if she actually tries to be a nice person and just really doesn’t know how.

  46. Blitz says:

@snapdragon She is certainly NOT vanilla, at least not her acting. For all I know she is clueless in other ways. I don’t care for Madonna, never liked her music, so maybe personally she wouldn’t appeal to me. But I haven’t followed her personally. I only know highly publicized facts. But you can’t fault her acting. The range of roles she can pull-off are enviably varied and she’s totally engaged.

  47. new... says:

    me too!!! (*_*)

  48. Luci says:

ahe looks a LOT better in this cover than in the vogue one!

  49. Roko says:

    Gorgeous ! I love Gwyneth

  50. Patrice says:

I really don’t understand why everyone gave Gwyneth so much crap about her site! It’s really fun, and has all sorts of interesting little tid bits on there about shopping, excercise, whatever.

And sure, she is a little “bourjois” or whatever, but we all have to remember that at the end of the day, she was RAISED incredibly wealthy, a true “blue blood”. In other words, she hasn’t changed since becoming an actor, I have a feeling she was always sort of this way (a little bit snobby, very private school, you know?)

I do find the whole never being photograped with her husbaned thing incredibly strange (especially since they both ARE willing to be snpapped with the children), but to each thier own.

  51. Anti-icon says:

“The hair is very Candy Bergen, although I think Bazaar was aiming for (as always with Gwyneth) “Grace Kelly ice princess” but they ended up with “glazed-eyed, aging WASP, stuck in her staid apartment because of her crippling agoraphobia”.

OMG, that is a VERY FUNNY observation.

  52. eso says:

I feel sorry for her. She’s trying SO desperately to be liked. Country movie? Glee? Trying to sing? Cooking for her family just like normal people? GOOP? It’s sad, really.
