Prince William had a big-boy, fast-cars-go-vroom event today at Jaguar

I know that neither brother was aware of what the other would be doing today, but that’s what makes the side-by-side comparison ~~perfect~~ to me. Prince Harry, the exiled and scorned spare, arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine earlier today, and he’s already delivered a keynote speech at a major security conference and met with Ukrainian military officials. Meanwhile, Prince William, the heir to the throne, went to see fast race cars go vroom-vroom. Which brother looks courageous, diligent, brave, competent, serious and mature? Which brother looks like a lazy dilettante?

Prince William is speeding into a special day for his son, Prince Louis. Prince William and Kate Middleton’s youngest child turned 8 on April 23, and the Prince of Wales stepped out for a solo royal duty that morning.

William, 43, paid a visit to the headquarters of the British Formula E team, Jaguar TCS Racing, in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, making the trip to highlight the hub’s approach to electrification, innovation and sustainability. Sustainable innovation is a key interest for the Prince of Wales, who is a passionate advocate for the natural world like his father, King Charles, and founded the prestigious Earthshot Prize contest in 2020 to accelerate environmental change through the next decade.

Formula E is the first all-electric international single-seater championship in the world and is considered to be the fastest-growing motorsport series. It is the first sport to be certified with a net-zero carbon footprint since its inception in 2014, and in January, it became the first global sport to achieve a B Corp Certification, a prestigious social and environmental performance standard.

On Thursday, the Prince of Wales got to see its headquarters for himself, touring the state-of-the-art facility and meeting everyone from engineers and graduates to decorated Formula E Jaguar drivers Mitch Evans and António Félix da Costa.

Prince William also got a close look at how the Jaguar team designs, develops and manufactures their I-TYPE 7 and future race cars in-house, and also stepped into the remote operations room from where Jaguar TCS Racing engineers support their colleagues on the track.

Yeah. Timing-wise, I’m sure that William was informed of Harry’s arrival in Ukraine hours before this Jaguar event. Perhaps that explains William’s mostly morose energy – what should have been the highlight of his week, hanging out with fast-car people like a big boy, and it looks like William is preoccupied by his simmering rage. Remember how his staff always claimed that he wanted to visit Ukraine too, but he was told that he couldn’t?? LOL.

Also, how hard would it have been for William to take his birthday boy with him? Win-win; Louis presumably would have had a blast during a nice birthday outing, and William gets to pretend he’s an involved parent. These people keep missing the easy bits.

    • jais says:

I had to re-read bc it almost sounded like they were saying he took Louis to his event as a special birthday treat. But nope. The treat was all for William.

    • GMHQ says:

Because the comms staff wouldn’t know a great p.r. Opportunity if it bit them on the nose. Will would have looked like a cool father instead of a royal dork doing the usual smiling, nodding and finger pointing. I remember Harry a few years ago hanging out with Lewis Hamilton at a Mercedes plant. Looked like they were actually enjoying being there and with each other. This is pathetic.

    • Gabby says:

Because it was probably Kate’s day with the kids per their separation agreement.

    • Jay says:

Same! I re-read it, too because I thought I misunderstood.

Why mention Louis’ birthday if his father didn’t bring him? Is it some attempted keyword optimization or do we think that the writer just assumed that this event was a birthday treat for Louis to accompany his father? It’s baffling.

    • Monika says:

They fooled me as well. I read the first paragraph and thought that is a lovely special trip for Louis on his special day.
And then they did not mention Louis again. So it is just a special event, probably seen as work, for big boy WIlliam.

    • Becks1 says:

Dangerous game they’re playing here – because while I agree, at first it made it sound like William took Louis with him, its also reminding us that Mr. Hands On Parent is doing a work event on his child’s birthday!!!!! abandoning his youngest on his 8th bday!!!! Will Louis ever recover???

(and I mean yes Louis is in school and doesn’t care where his father is, but W&K have used the kids too much as an excuse to not work for this to not stand out.)

  2. Hypocrisy says:

I’m just wondering if they had to make a new cockpit in that car to accommodate Peggy’s size.. most drivers are not that tall at all..
Peggy would lead a much happier life if he stopped competing with his brother and just enjoy the moment and accept that his brother is global while he is local..and Peggy is local by his own lazy choices and actions.

    • Dutch says:

I would say that especially since this is a startup type series, they have built a mockup without all the cockpit customization so sponsors and VIP types can get behind the wheel.

      • Hypocrisy says:

I used to attend the pre race sponsor events a lot and had the opportunity to meet many of the drivers with their cars and my kids were to big to fit in the cockpits by the time they were 16, so I was curious.. that makes sense that it doesn’t have all the instruments installed.

No shade to the people at Formula E because this does sound interesting and any other time this would probably be an interesting event to bolster his ” environmentalist” credentials.

    However, today?????

So, after a month vacation interspersed with two visits to church, and a birthday party, you went to look at race cars? A 44 year old man, for his days work. You may not want to compare the two couples, but they’re doing the most to make sure that you do.

Kate still hasn’t done anything. What are you doing? You have been on vacation! Most people after they come back from vacation they jump back into work, do you need to ease your way back into work after being on vacation? So a vacation to get you back into the work mode after vacation? They should be working every single day this week. Especially since the state visit will be next week and they won’t want to ” overshadow” ( yeah right, that’s the reason).

    • Becks1 says:

Kate has to work Saturday for the ANZAC service. She clearly needs to rest between the reception on Tuesday and that.

  4. Cosmo says:

What do they do all day? Don’t they get bored? I bet Kate watches reality TV all day. Royal events do look tiresome, but I would like to leave the house now and then and talk to people.

    • Pebbles says:

it’s baffling. The difference between the couples. Harry and Meghan may not be seen everyday but just by the sheer amount of things they do turn up to do they and their team are hard at work behind the scenes making these things happen. I’m not seeing any receipts of real work being done by W&K’s.

Cudos to his team for finding him an engagement that would make him get off his lazy bum though!

      • Becks1 says:

I know we talk about this a lot but its not just the work aspect – yes I think H&M are both working regularly, likely more than “regularly” and are very busy – how could they not be, with everything they have going on?

But besides that, what do H&M do when they’re not working and the kids aren’t home? Well we know Meghan likes to cook, bake, read, garden, hike, yoga, do crafts and create home decor, Harry has referenced the both of them reading before bed, etc. Harry seems to like outdoor activities – hiking, surfing, biking, and probably more that we don’t know about it. Again reading.

Now flip that to W&K. What do they do? Kate works out excessively and likes being in nature (so she says.) William likes….watching football and talking about football?

        And that’s about it?

  5. Me at home says:

I mean, I like EVs and I have an EV.

But this is really giving “Kate has Louis today for his birthday.” Otherwise, why NOT take Louis?

  6. Apparently there were no cocktails to be had for this driving expensive cars event. So sad. Probably had to stay off the sauce last night too so as not to wreck the expensive car the next day!! Heavy is the head who is waiting IMPATIENTLY for the crown!

  7. Tessa says:

Scooter plays with the big toys. And keeps birthday boy home.

  8. Amy Bee says:

Why wasn’t this engagement done yesterday for Earth Day? Plus since it’s Louis’ birthday today why didn’t he bring with him to see the cars?

  9. Blujfly says:

To be fair re: Louis, the kids only returned to school yesterday after 3.5 weeks off.

Also other than entering the cockpit it’s boring. Droning on about sustainability in….. car racing.
