King Charles’ US state visit will be mired in a political disaster about the Falklands

King Charles and Camilla will arrive in Washington on Monday, for what will probably be the most chaotic state visit of Charles’ reign. Personally, I believe that there was basically no way for Charles to wriggle out of undertaking this state visit, although I definitely believe that British diplomats and Downing Street should have used the threat of canceling the visit as a carrot/stick approach for the Trump White House. Whenever Trump started acting up and saying crazy sh-t, there should have been more of an effort to threaten to take away the state visit. But it’s too late for all of that now – Charles and his side-chick queen will march into a “diplomatic nightmare” on Monday, because Trump and his people cannot stop being complete morons. This time, it’s all about the bloody Falkland Islands.

King Charles was sleepwalking into a diplomatic nightmare on Friday, after Donald Trump launched another vicious attack on the U.K., prompting new calls for the king to abandon his state visit to the United States just days before it was due to kick off.

The latest insult to British honor was a leaked Pentagon email that suggested a review of British ownership of the Falkland Islands to punish the U.K. for not supporting Trump’s war in Iran.

The U.K.’s Foreign Office has made clear that the visit will go ahead, while a palace source also told the Daily Beast that there was no question the visit would be abandoned and that the king would invoke the old royal mantra of “keep calm and carry on.” But the level of insult involved underlines the danger of the trip for the king, because Trump’s maneuvering on the Falklands is built on the back of British war dead.

The 74-day Falklands War was fought between April 2 and June 14, 1982, after Argentina—then in the hands of a far-right junta government—invaded the British overseas territory in the South Atlantic, hundreds of miles off the coast of Argentina, and with a population fiercely loyal to the British crown. It had been British since 1765 and had no indigenous population. Margaret Thatcher, then the U.K. prime minister, sent a naval task force more than 8,000 miles to retake the islands, making it the last major overseas war solely fought by the U.K.; Ronald Reagan’s administration stayed firmly out of the dispute. The conflict killed 255 British troops and 649 Argentine military personnel.

Since the war, the islands have remained under British control, although Argentina still claims sovereignty over them, calling them Los Malvinas. The Falklands give Britain a strategic position in the South Atlantic and access routes toward Antarctica.

Sir Ed Davey, the leader of Britain’s third party, the Liberal Democrats, which holds 72 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons, described a leaked Pentagon email indicating that the U.S. support for Britain’s sovereignty over the Falkland Islands could face review due to U.K. opposition to American policy on Iran as “frankly outrageous.”

He urged the cancellation of the king’s state visit scheduled to start Monday, branding Donald Trump an “unreliable, damaging President” who “cannot keep insulting our country.”

While Davey’s comments have no prospect of any impact on the king’s plans, they do accurately reflect a sense of disgust in large swathes of the British population at the prospect of King Charles III’s visit to the U.S.

A poll by YouGov on March 26 found that 49 percent of Britons said Charles should cancel the visit, versus 33 percent who wanted it to go ahead. The figures broadly mirror last year’s sentiment, when 45 percent of Britons thought it was wrong to invite Trump for a September 2025 state visit.

The government and royal aides have insisted the trip will help cement “deep” transatlantic connections and “shared values.” Still, the reality for Charles is that he can ill-afford to be seen cozying up to a U.S. president now openly reviled in the U.K.

[From The Daily Beast]

Tom Sykes (who wrote this piece for DB) also cited Charles’ terrible approval numbers, as of the latest YouGov emotional-support poll. While Prince William, Kate and poor dead Queen Elizabeth II all poll above 75%, Charles’ approval rating is currently at 60%, with 33% of the British public viewing him “negatively.” So, a (relatively) unpopular king is visiting a catastrophically unpopular American president, with the sad hope that two dogsh-t heads of state will somehow fix each other’s political problems. All while Trump and his cronies plot their revenge on the UK because Keir Starmer wants nothing to do with Trump’s war in Iran. Won’t someone think of the Falklands??

Against that backdrop, the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell are still speaking out and asking to meet with Charles. The brother of the late Virginia Giuffre also gave an interview to the Times.

Updated to add – I wrote all of this before last night’s WHCD shooting. Do you think the state visit will still move forward? My guess is that it will.

Here’s hoping Trump’s latest attention stunt will force Charles to cancel his visit.

  2. Tessa says:

I hope the visit will be canceled due to the shooting.

    • BeanieBean says:

I really don’t see how or why they would. They didn’t cancel trump’s press conference after the faux attack. They didn’t even hustle him out of the hotel. I just can’t get too excited about yet another alleged attack. Show up Charles, don’t show up, whatevs. Let me know when one or both finally shuffle off this mortal coil. Until then, I’m turtling.

    • Adventure says:

It would have been if it were real, but there’s no threat in staged stunts. They never would have let the Queen go, but Charles is obviously disposable at this point, and needs all the attention he can get lol

  3. Zao says:

The right to Falkland is crazy especially from UK. It’s not suprise trump revenge and his cronies wants that island because of oil. As Asian I live for this day where usa goes after uk. It’s high time US goes after these colonial leeches who stole so much from Asia and Africa. There is no honor among thrives.

    • Kingston says:

      #Zao
Hv you not been paying attention? America is no longet a reliable partner. For as long as this president & his cabal keep their foot on the neck of América, the cavalry aint coming. Of course, if your country has oil….but that’s a whole other rabbit hole.

  4. Teddy says:

The Trump regime are such idiots they initially flew the wrong flags to welcome Chuck to DC. Instead of the Union Jack, they put up the Australian flag. Mad scramble to fix the mistake.

    • Genevieve says:

I couldn’t believe it when I heard that. Like, I kind of could get it if it was mixing up NZ and Australia (still massively unprofessional and incompetent), but wtf.

    • Megan says:

Actually it was the DC government that put up the wrong flags. I can’t wait for a new mayor.

    • BeanieBean says:

😳 I guess I assumed they had those flags up for ANZAC Day. No? Yikes!! 🤦‍♀️

  5. Amy Bee says:

The Telegraph had a piece saying that Charles and Trump get on so well so this visit was going to happen regardless what the British people say about it.

  6. Who Were These People? says:

Is the Falklands thing because trump is propping up the “populist “head Argentina?

    • Genevieve says:

I get the impression it’s a way for the Trump admin to put pressure on the UK to cooperate with the Iran debacle.

    • Gah says:

Im gonna say yes to that. We lived in Arg until recently and have friends who are very well informed re Israeli and arg govt movements.

The US is def aligning w arg bc in the event of disaster/war they have all kinds of natural resources and incredible capacity for agriculture.

The Malvinas are a v emotional component of arg pride as well as British pride. I think whoever whispers into trump’s ear is doing this to spite the UK and continue the arg/US alliance. Milei will not be there forever but the Malvinas are a BIG deal.

  7. TN Democrat says:

Cancel. There is no negotiating with these evil minions. Work on building the relationships within the UK, Commonwealth, and Europe. This visit is a slap in the face to Canada and Europe. We are no ones ally under the tangerine terror. The Republikkkans treatment of Ukraine is beyond disgraceful and is example A in how evil, treasonous and corrupt this administration truly is. Why should the UK expect better than Ukraine and the rest of Europe? Brexit was a clusterfuck that magat insiders egged on (per the Epstein files) to create this day for the UK. The white nationalism and racism behind the zeal to leave the EU has made the UK permanently vulnerable.

    • BeanieBean says:

Cancel and say it’s a safety issue, obvs the Secret Service cannot guarantee the king’s safety.

  8. another cross to carry says:

Kaiser, aren’t you aware that threats from the royal family are reserved only for Prince and Princess Harry? Charles may not like djt (if that is to be believed), but they certainly share many traits. Both adulterers, multiple times married, love the middle eastern torturers and their bags of cash, current wives are completely useless to their country, in or adjacent to the e-files to name a few.

    No holds barred!

  9. aquarius64 says:

The visit is still going ahead despite of the shooting, but you bet No 10 and the Foreign Office made calls to the WH to make sure security is locked down when Fred and Gladys are on US soil. Charles gives an address to Congress during the visit.

  10. sunniside up says:

Trump wants the Falkland Islands for himself, all that oil.

    • Mayp says:

💯. Yes, Trump has probably been eyeing the Falklands for a long time; and, now his spat with Starmer (contrived?) is a great excuse to go after them

      • Megan says:

Trump has never heard of the Falkland Islands. His Big Oil benefactors have been eyeing them.

  11. Truthiness says:

Charles isn’t going to want to cancel, he’s aura farming the heck out of this. He’s fighting for relevancy, he’s really worked on his speeches and he thinks soft diplomacy has a shot at uh, something.

There’s a non-zero chance Charles wants to see if the remaining Ep files feature more of Andrew, or perhaps they’ll talk about what to do about Ghislaine, what further damage she could do. We don’t know what kompromat she has but Trump might know.

    • Jais says:

Aura farming this? Lol, what a fool, maga has no aura. This is going to be messy af.

      • Truthiness says:

Yeah it sure looks like a fool’s errand. Charles fancies himself as quite the diplomat and orator and now he gets to address a joint session of Congress. A speech opportunity like that is catnip for Charles, he wants his turn in the spotlight.

We all think the felon is immune to diplomacy but Mamdani worked some kind of magic behind closed doors. Charles might think he was the reason Trump stopped wanting Canada, another country with oil that he was obsessed with. Or the visit could be Trump wanting to deport Ghislaine.

      • Antonym says:

Mamdani did not have to work magic. He’s attractive. Drumpf and his ego want everyone to think that pretty people like him, and (even more than that) that he is one of the pretty people. Mamdani is easily in control of that relationship.

Unfortunately for Charles, he is not attractive. He’ll have to find a different path.

      • Bqm says:

Lots of attractive people don’t succeed with Trump. Usually the jealousy even sets him off. (See: Obama) Let’s not underestimate what political voodoo Mamdani can conjure. Because that Oval Office presser was BONKERS. I’ve seen Trump since the 80s and he’s never fallen all over himself like he did with Mamdani.

    • death by bacon says:

This visit could be a disaster for Charles if 47 invades the Faulkands after or before he leaves. I’d have canceled.

      • PunkyMomma says:

This was my thought as well—Mango taking Edward and Wallis to tour the ballroom excavation—“here’s my really big, beautiful ballroom and, oh by the way, we have bigly development plans for the Falkland Islands. We’ll comp you a suite and dinner when the casino’s done.”

    • StarWonderful says:

      Right!

  12. Eurydice says:

Wow, the Pentagon is a leaky sieve.

  13. Dee says:

Queue more insane assaults on Harry to distract. One… two… three…

  14. sharon says:

I expect the visit will still be on, but geez, lots of bad karma.

  15. QuiteContrary says:

Yes, please bring up the Falklands, the war in which Andrew was involved!

Keep reminding everyone of the link between Trump and Andrew (that is, Epstein).

    This is glorious.

  16. Sid says:

If Chuck has any sense he will take the opportunity that Scammer Christ Superstar just handed him and cancel the visit over security concerns and too much stress on him as a cancer patient.

  17. Jferber says:

I hope Chuck goes and it’s a f-cking disaster for all parties. Maybe more fireworks? Trump is a walking disaster and I hope he humiliates Charles about whatever chaotic, outlandish bullshit that’s always in Trump’s head.

  18. jferber says:

What if Trump tells Charles visit that it’s been discovered that Northern Ireland has oil reserves beneath it and he, Trump, wants it and will have it at any cost? I can imagine Chuck white-faced and trembling. Yes, he’s a sick old man (both are really), but Charles has done deeds past redemption. Diana didn’t have the chance to even get out of her thirties to encounter the health problems that elderly people, such as Charles, are heir to. So no, no sympathy for Chuck.
