John Mayer says Twitter is “over”

wenn5462203
When I first read this story it dawned on me that we haven’t heard anything from John Mayer in months! The guy really deserves some credit for shutting the f’ck up for a while. *slow clap* It’s been a whole two and a half months since Mayer dug himself into that deep, dark PR hole that was his racist, sexist, tell-all Playboy interview. Well Mayer is talking again and it’s not entirely self-aggrandizing for once. He says he thinks Twitter is “over” and mentioned that the haters are getting him down.

John Mayer has revealed he is planning to cancel his account on micro-blogging website twitter because he thinks it is ”over” as a means of communication.

The ‘Gravity’ singer – one of the most high-profile users of the social networking website – admits he is growing tired of micro-blogging and is preparing to cancel his account on the site, unless its owners change its purpose.

He said: “Within in the last couple weeks, every night I think about cancelling my twitter account because I think it’s pretty much done.

“I just think twitter as a form of communication, I think it’s over to be honest with you.

“I would rather see twitter be a cork board of links to other more important things, because it’s really sort of flawed from the beginning. I can’t tell you how many times I meet people or I’m having dinner with people who write stuff and they get upset they have haters now, like, `Why do I want to invent more reasons to have haters?’ ”

The musician – who has previously dated stars including Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson – has come to realise that he could utilise his time better than spending his free moments on the internet.

He added: “I might as well spend that time making a sandwich or building a model ship or something.

“My challenge going forward is to basically disregard the need, the obsessive need for external validation.”

[From Contact Music]

Let me just repeat that last quote. “My challenge going forward is to basically disregard the need, the obsessive need for external validation.” You think? I checked Mayer’s Twitter and he hasn’t written anything in a whole two weeks so maybe he’s serious about giving up Twitter. This is the same guy who dissed Jennifer Aniston for not being more connected, and said in Playboy “If Jennifer Aniston knows how to use BitTorrent, I’ll eat my f*cking shoe…. The brunt of her success came before TMZ and Twitter. I think she’s still hoping it goes back to 1998. She saw my involvement in technology as courting distraction. And I always said, ‘These are the new rules.'”

So instead of admitting that he’s using the technology to mentally masturbate, Mayer is blaming the technology he once hailed for somehow being inadequate. He calls Twitter “over” and “flawed from the beginning.” If it were so flawed, why have celebrities been flocking to it to communicate with fans? I’m not a Twitter user and find that it’s just another thing that I have to keep up with in my busy life, but why knock the medium when the issue is what you’re using it for? Twitter allows people to get information across quickly and to a large group of people and in that way it’s an important, ground breaking tool. If you’re a tool then Twitter will reflect that, but it’s not Twitter’s fault! Mayer is behind the times anyway. Miley Cyrus quit Twitter six months ago.

Ugh, he is such a loser and an idiot. Just because he faced major backlash for being a d!ck, he thinks the whole thing is over?
I’m sorry, I didn’t realize the entire world swayed as per John Mayer’s wishes.
Those few months where he finally did STFU were good. Let’s try it again!

  3. lilred says:

Twitter isn’t over, his career is tho.

  4. Just a Poster says:

Can’t he just be let out to sing? Can’t we just put him back in his cage after he sings?

  5. Huma says:

Twitter is what you make of it.

If I used Twitter to spout bullshit, it’d be a bullshit tool. Like me.

But I use it to make contacts and post interesting things, and it’s gotten me job interviews and a standing invitation to come ‘hang out’ in the private chambers of a federal district judge and his clerks whenever I want.

(And no, that’s not a shady thing. 😛 The judge is old and his clerks are young guys and gals my age. Haha. I just realized how shady that initially sounded.)

But yeah, it is what you make of it. If you use it as a social tool, it’s just like Facebook, one more thing to keep track of. If you use it as an informational tool or kind of a mix, it’s useful. If you use it to wank off, then it’s just crappy and ‘over.’ Finished, as it were.

    OK, I’ll show myself out.

  6. gg says:

No, diarrhea-mouth, it’s only flawed in the hands of flawed idiots like yourself, Mr. Mayer.

  7. ogechi says:

    hahaha then try facebook

  8. ViktoryGin says:

At least that’s one last platform from which we don’t have to hear his vapid proselytizing.

  9. Charity is Chic says:

So basically, it turns out that Aniston was right. He was courting distraction, and disaster. He’s over it now that people see him as a racist douche. And the reason you haven’t heard from in months is because he stopped being relevant when Aniston dumped him. And yes, I think Aniston did the dumping.

She’s never felt the need to explain the end of their relationship while he needed to make sure everyone thoughr he did the dumping. That is always the sign of a bruised ego. He basically described the end of their relationship as the worst time of his life. Not exactly the words of someone itching to break free if you know what I mean. More of an admission than anything else.

Now please make him go away.

    John Mayer is so over!!

  11. Jazz says:

Ugh, I’d forgotten all about this insignificant gnat. Is he still around??

  12. B says:

So that’s the inside glimpse into what Jon Mayer has been pondering nightly for 14 nights? Impressive.

  13. PJ says:

All Mayer was saying is that he was really into Twitter for a while, and then decided to drop it, which sounds like a healthy choice for him.

A lot of people can become addicted to this kind of stuff. He was obviously into it enough that it caused problems in his relationship with Aniston. And yes, tweeting can be very time-consuming and unproductive.

I think Mayer is overstating in predicting the end of Twitter. It’s not the latest and greatest hot new fad anymore, but it serves a purpose for a lot of people.

  14. bellaluna says:

I maintain that John Mayer is over. And has been for some time. Now if he would only get over himself…sigh.

  15. Jeri says:

I never “got” Twitter. Why would I want to know when someone is brushing their teeth or going to the bathroom. I could see it for special annoucements or whatever but just everyday things is not stuff I’m gonna “follow.”

  16. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    Practice your scales, John.

  17. Ruffian9 says:

God, when will John Mayer be over?

  18. noonoo says:

He is soo shacked up with taylor Swift…thats why he has been off twitter. I bet she told him to be discreet or it was over…

  19. anonymous says:

Has he deleted his twitter account?? That would make it final.lol

  20. Camille says:

I’m with you Jeri, I think Twitter was never that amazing or ‘cool’ to begin with. It’s just another fad and will die like MySpace has.

  21. Shay says:

Finally he realised what rubbish Twitter is. But in saying that, it’s also a technology that brings out the worst in people, especially during terrible moments. Twitter may be included in many psychological studies. How great do these celebrities feel after unloading all their neuroses on Twitter?

  22. katyalia says:

    Huh?
I followed your link & it seeems like Mayer has been tweeting continuously.
No 2 week hiatus that I can see…

A good website with interesting content, that is what I need. Thank you for keeping this web site, I will be visiting it. Do you do newsletters? Can’t find it.
