Did Pres. Obama have an affair in 2004?

U.S. President Obama attends the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner

Back in the 2008 presidential election, I remember hearing a vague rumbling about an alleged affair Barack Obama had in 2004, when he was running for the open Illinois seat for the U.S. Senate. The sourcing was always weird for the story – I think one of the British tabloid started it initially. The alleged “other woman” was named Vera Baker, and she was a staffer on his Senate campaign. Now, a few years after the initial reports, The National Enquirer is beginning the claims anew. At first, the Enquirer claimed they had “video evidence” of the affair, but now they’re backtracking on that. So as it stands, their story is based entirely on the supposed eye-witness testimony of a limo driver who claims he drove Vera Baker to a hotel Obama was staying. Here’s more:

Reports out of Washington, DC: PRESIDENT OBAMA in a shocking cheating scandal after being caught in a Washington, D.C. Hotel with a former campaign aide.

A confidential investigation has learned that Obama first became close to gorgeous 35 year-old VERA BAKER in 2004 when she worked tirelessly to get him elected to the US Senate, raising millions in campaign contributions.

Now, the investigators are searching for a hotel surveillance videotape.

While Baker has insisted in the past that “nothing happened” between them, reports reveal that top anti-Obama operatives are offering more than $1 million to witnesses to reveal what they know about the alleged hush-hush affair.

Among those being offered money is a limo driver who says in 2004 that he took Vera to a secret hotel rendezvous in a Washington hotel where Obama was staying.

An ENQUIRER reporter has confirmed the limo driver’s account of the secret 2004 rendezvous and has also learned that on-site hotel surveillance video camera footage could provide indisputable evidence to the investigation.

[From The National Enquirer]

Eh. CB thinks it could be true, and that Pres. Obama and Michelle have already worked through it, so there should be no public scandal. I tend to think that although the Enquirer has gotten some stories right about politicians’ sex lives, there’s so much misinformation about Obama anyway that this “affair” story has a 95% chance of being bullsh-t. I mean, what does it boil down to, if the limo driver is telling the truth? That he drove an attractive Obama staffer to the hotel Obama may or may not have been staying at. Mediaite has more criticisms of why this is all likely bullsh-t.

Also, Saturday was the big correspondent’s dinner, and by most accounts, Obama’s address was very well-received. He had some good zingers, but it all seemed pretty tame. Probably because Jay Leno was the keynote speaker – they should have gone Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. Here’s Obama’s speech:

Here are some photos of all of the celebrities at the dinner:

It always amazes me how Americans are so into their politicians’ sex lives. If this were proved true, it could potentially derail his entire presidency.

Is it because you guys are very religious? Someone help me get it. Because I generally don’t care what my politicians do with their wangs.

Sex is so trivial when compared the proper, sometimes world-impacting functions politicians are in place to perform. Considering the greater context, how lowbrow and simplistic does a person have to be to care about where they stick their penis in the off hours?

  2. Mrs.Robinson says:

This story reeks. Is it anyone’s business what Obama did or didn’t do in 2004? Unless it was illegal, I say no.

We have imporant issues at hand in the political arena today. This nonsense is not one of them. Don’t support this politically motivated scandal 6 years after the “fact”.

  3. Zelda says:

And holy crap, I forgot Ashley Judd was alive.

  4. GaGa says:

I am not an Obama supporter, but this seems to be some lame bull shit from the past that is now irrelevant and doesn’t have a lot of back up. Someone out there is simply fishing for anything they can to make him look bad and stir up scandal.

  5. Oenix says:

When all else fails….. This is a preview of what to expect during the next presidential campaign. It’s gonna be a very bumpy ride!!!

  6. Kayleigh says:

Zelda: It’s because we like to be judgmental and put our two cents in everything. *Ashamed*
And for some reason how you run your pen15 is how you would run your house/city/state/country. So if you are reckless and like to have human urges, you are a bad person/role model/politician/president.
Look at Clinton, he did such amazing things for America and got us our of debt after Pres. Bush Sn. ran our economy into the ground. But he will be remembered for having an affair instead.

  7. gee_gee says:

Going on record as saying that I do not care if he had an affair. Did not care about Clinton and Lewinsky either. That being said, I would totally hit that. Um, both of them. Now fix the economy. Thanks.

  8. Dingles says:

I think Americans feel so strongly about the sex lives of our politicians because family is still in many ways the cornerstone of our society, and if a politician cannot be faithful and honest with his own family, then by extension he probably will not be faithful and honest with American citizens.

Cheating on a spouse requires a great degree of selfishness, indifference to the feelings of others, and dishonesty- none of these are traits we want in the people running our country.

Fidelity (or lack thereof) gives an indication of a politician’s character.

  9. Momo says:

Lol- Limo driver drives Obama campaign staffer to hotel where Obama is staying, and where, one can only surmise, his entire entourage and campaign staff were also probably staying.

Get ready for another Monica-gate, because this one’s going to completely bring down his administration (sarcasm).

  10. LindyLou says:

It’s not uncommon for men in power to have trouble keeping their peckers in their pants. A lot of women are attracted to that and offer it up. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this were true. But who really cares other than his wife? As long as he does a good job while he’s in office.

  11. bellaluna says:

    @ Zelda –

I don’t think being religious has anything to do with it. The “right” likes to make politics about morals, and they are the “morality police.” If anyone does anything outside what they dub “acceptable” they make a big stink, trying to force everyone else to either defend the behaviour or take sides. It’s absolutely ridiculous. (It also distracts people from focusing on their own bad behaviour and changing accordingly.)

Our government is full of shit. If those in office truly cared about the people, they would stop this partisan bullshit and focus on what really matters: what’s best for ALL of the people.

No one person is perfect, so why do they expect their elected officials to be?

  12. mockey says:

I’m sooooooooooooooooooooooo happy to live in France! Nobody give a f*ck about our politicians’ sex lives. It has nothing to do with politics? then who cares.

  13. Maritimer says:

Can someone please refresh my memory – who is the couple in the picture below Ashley. She looks familiar, he doesn’t. Thanks.

  14. bellaluna says:

@ Maritimer, he’s a “correspondent” on the Daily Show; not sure who she is but I’ve seen her before.

  15. anon says:

note to self move to France ASAP 🙂
I am weary of these scandals and the NE hunting people down geez, just 1 week without a major catastrophe/scandal would be so welcome.

  16. grumbles says:

here we go again!!! GOP cant win any other way?????

  17. asiont says:

    wow cynthia nixon looks fabulous

  18. Heather says:

    @Dingles, good comment.

  19. canadianchick says:

Cynthia looks great but needs a better strapless bra. Meh re the Obama scandal, but could that be why Mobama was giving Beyonce the side eye re Pres Obama?

  20. Serenity says:

@Dingles, couldn’t have said it better myself. I was just wondering, if Obama was a conservative would people still think it was “no big deal”?

  21. Zelda says:

    @ Dingles–
I see your point, but family is the cornerstone of virtually every society. And other cultures still don’t feel this way. We see a politician’s sexual life as distinct from his/her professional life.

Maybe it is a greater seperation of sexuality from morality?

I don’t know. But there has to be something else at play…

  22. Lisa says:

So, a limo driver might get $1 million to confirm he drove a woman to a hotel? Sounds like ironclad evidence to me. This is why there needs to be an Eye Roll emoticon!

  23. YT says:

The story sounds fishy. If true, it would have come out long before now and with better “evidence”.

  24. daisy424 says:

    @Dingles, Well stated.
I remember people on this very site drooling over McCain’s affair…..

  25. Chevas says:

Are we REALLY having this conversation? A limo driver confirms the story? How is that possible? How would a limo driver know the context of which he/she was performing their job? If someone gave me a million dollars and told me to say that I had an affair with Little Richard, then my answer would go something like this; “A whop-bobba-loo-bop-a-whop-bam-boo!” I’m really outraged that the GOP thinks we are that stupid!

  26. Chevas says:

THIS is why the media gets such a bad rap. Some will run with any story, no facts required. Cronkite is rolling over in his grave right now.

  27. Kate says:

Umm, this is a story published in the National Enquirer. It is not a Republican National Committee press release. I seem to recall a number of Enquirer/Globe stories with Laura/George W. Bush divorce/alcoholism/affair-type stories.

  28. Angela says:

Well, at this point Governor Sanford, a politician who ran on a solid “family values” campaign, is still in office. I remember how I fell, hook line and sinker, for the GOP’s concern about Clinton’s ability to lead being tied to his faithfulness. And that was while Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the House at the time, was having an affair. Now it seems plain and simple – the Republicans will stop at nothing to de-legitimatize a Democratic presidency. And there are always those naive voters who believe the republican whine machine. Hopefully, there will be fewer who fall for the ploy this time around.

  29. cowbell says:

Wait, Clinton got us out of debt? That’s news. Balancing the budget and paying off existing debt are different things. I like Clinton, but he didn’t get us out of debt.

We care because in America Politicians are akin to celebrities and we all know how much we care about who’s sticking what in whom in Hollywood..

  30. Fiona says:

    RT Zelda.
It has nothing to do with religion.
It’s simply because why should we trust a politician and be loyal to them if they cannot be loyal to their own family?
Just like Clinton, Edwards, and every man who has ever cheated, he is being disloyal and impulsive half the time. Why would we want anyone like that impacting our legal structure in the United States? Not only are the cheating scandals getting old, but why are these people trying to maintain a persona that is entirely fabricated, ex: tiger woods. They are deceitful people, and if they can’t be trusted by their own family, why should we trust them?

  31. Fiona says:

plus, having extra marital affairs is a distraction and conflict of interest for any politician or person with HUGE responsibilities.

  32. Rosanna says:

Now if this were true I want to see all you ranting against Obama the way you ranted against Edwards…

  33. kat says:

    #8 Dingles, Well said!

  34. e-non says:

oh really? a f*cking limo driver knew who this woman was in 2004; and his claim that taking a campaign worker to the same hotel where presumably the majority of the obama campaign workers were staying is supposed to be proof of an affair? are you shitting me?

    how f*cking stupid.

  35. GatsbyGal says:

I really don’t think this is true, and if it is, I’m sure the two of them have already worked it out. They always look so in love with each other.

Then again, it’s 2010, the year of the sordid affairs. So, we’ll see I suppose.

  36. mina says:

I am surprised that the alleged affair was with a woman with all the Obama-gay rumors swirling around. I believe there is a lot we don’t know about him…there were a lot better candidates of all races for the presidency than this man!

  37. Whatever says:

Not buying it, especially with a shady source. Come forward and state your name for the record, so we can make sure it isn’t another BS republican trick. Like when that girl who worked for McCain carved an O into her forehead and then said an Obama supporter did it. I’d have to hear from the woman to believe it.

  38. SammyHammy says:

‘If this were proved true, it could potentially derail his entire presidency.’

Hardly. Can we say C-L-I-N-T-O-N? Not only did he have affairs, he committed major felonies while in office.

Besides, anything done to derail this presidency would be a blessing. It could not possibly a bigger disaster than it already is.
Further proof that if you are a liberal, you are forgiven ANYTHING, but if you aren’t, well, then you are just plain even.

  39. e-non says:

***he committed major felonies while in office.***

ah, the alternate reality of the republicans stooge..

booohooo, so sad about how democrats always get away with the sleaze, unless of course, your name is diaper dave vitter, john ensign or mark sanford.

  40. Whatever says:

Besides, anything done to derail this presidency would be a blessing. It could not possibly a bigger disaster than it already is.

What??? After 8 years of Bush and Co. deconstructing the country (ENORMOUS deficits, starting war for no reason, and ruining the economy) it will literally take DECADES to fix. Or we could just hand it back over to the republicans so they can finish the job of turning the US into a third world country. Yeah, he’s so bad… Whatever.

  41. Whatever says:

Felonies, that’s a joke. Bush committed felonies and treason. Oh and half the morons trying to oust Clinton during the whole Lewinsky thing were HAVING AFFAIRS AT THE SAME TIME THEY WERE TRASHING CLINTON. Just a few notables include Newt Gingrich cheating on his wife as he was dogging Clinton and Mark Foley screwing young boys working as pages in Congress. Yeah, they are better. They are a joke.

  42. Shannon says:

If they had any proof, they’d have provided it already. This is why the National Enquirer isn’t a credible source. They did a kick-ass job on the Edwards affair, and now they think people will just believe them when they attempt to blow the whistle based on flimsy hearsay.

  43. jak says:

poor sammy thinks it’s ok if rethug politiician use mafia like tactics to destroy anyone who isn’t a repub. hack. that is how they operate. they went after clinton, those real estate deals, over and over and over they tried to destroy them, but nothing was found. they finally found something on him, and they don’t care how or what they have to do to destroy them enemies, i mean opponents. look what they did to acorn. they are still under investigation for getting people to sign a paper saying one thing, but in reality they were signing them up as rethugs. that’s much more illegal than acorn employees signing up mickey mouse and knowing it wouldn’t get past anyone. those pimps edited their tape, they should be in jail. those people reported them to the police. rethugs are a sick mafia and must never be in power again or this country is toast.

  44. palomino says:

Rosanna, if it turns out that Obama fathered a child with a woman on his payroll while Michelle battled terminal illness and then later had one his aides claim paternity, then yes, people will rant about it.

  45. Shay says:

The Enquirer must be desperate for stories if they are backtracking on this story -which is most likely a non-story.

  46. Lindsay says:

I think part of it too is he sold his family man image (not that other politicians don’t do the same.) People, especially women, really like Michelle and that feeling is shared by people from both parties. Plus, his girls and the puppy are too cute. It is part of the reason the Tiger Wood thing was shocking but others (Letterman, Matthew Fox, Josh Duhamel) were not. Of course the drama and the number of women were a big factor. It goes back to the whole family thing and living true to the image you presented to the people during the campaign. Campaign lies and false images are also not unique to him if it is true.

Plus, too many of us don’t even bother to vote much less stay informed, but a scandal is much more entertaining. Not to mention our fascination with stupid stuff like Obama killing a fly or Biden saying something ridiculous or the f-word.

I think the million dollar figure is an exaggeration, it happened a long time ago and I don’t think it would be as bad as the Clinton mess. He wasn’t with her in the Oval Office. A million would be believable before the election… much more effective strategy than doubting his birth certificate or middle name. But now it wouldn’t do enough damage to warrant that much money now. Plus, the GOP is spending their money on much more interesting and scandalous things!

He also would put to shame our reputation as the world wide beacon of morality and ruin our wholesome image. We wouldn’t want to tarnish that. 😉

Not all of us care about the scandals or are ignorant about what is going on and I do love my country.

@Environ – they retracted the claim about having a video of it, which is mentioned in the article. They are still standing by their story.

  47. lin234 says:

@ Fiona- I was just thinking the same thing!

Why should we trust a man who is always spouting family values when he’s cheating on the people that he pretends to be loyal to? If a man cheats on the one person he has pledged his loyalty to, what makes us think he’ll be loyal to millions of strangers.

If this is true, then it really discredits Obama because a MAJOR part of his campaign was show the world how in love he was with his wife. I remember reading their love story in the news. I hope this isn’t true.

Btw, is Obama a president or celebrity? It seems like he’s always posing for a people interview or pictured with a celebrity.

  48. Lindsay says:

John Oliver is with his girlfriend Kate Norley, an Iraq veteran who has been outspoken member of Vets for Freedom (www.vetsforfreedom.org/about/norley.aspx). He is on the Daily show and has a weekly podcast for the Bugle, he was also in The Love Guru and on the TV show Community. And I love him. 🙂

  49. jen says:

But what is really important here that, lesbian or not, women look STUPID in a tux!

  50. Kelaa Khaa says:

Ashley Judd was really good in that show sisters way back and I wish they would bring it back in reruns.

  51. girl says:

Maybe it is bad lighting but it looks like Ashley Judd should have picked a foundation more suited to her skin tone.

As for the alleged affair, if this was about Bush while he was in office, I am pretty sure it wouldn’t be “no big deal”. I am not going to assume that the claims are true because it looks like there isn’t very much to substantiate it. But it truely seems like a double standard that because people like the guy, they don’t care. It’s human nature. If we don’t like someone, people are more prone to believing bad things about them.

  52. Trillion says:

#38, Obama’s presidency “could not be a bigger disaster than it already is”? Are you serious? Where have you been the last 8 yrs?

  53. Trillion says:

Zelda: Americans are still just very puritanical. We will regularly wave away very serious injustices in a politician or religious leader, but leap into action if sex is involved. I’d far rather have a good president who cheated on his/her partner than a crap one who could at least lay claim to fidelity.

  54. buellblaster says:

Some ask why we care so much about our politicians and their moral compasses. If you are a married politician (man or woman) and you are having an affair it speaks VOLUMES about your character. Think about it. All of the secretive planning, the cover-ups by their staff, the bold face lies to their spouses/children. These people are in control of ours and our country’s future. I don’t care what political party you belong to it is disgraceful that we just condone it with “it’s none of our business”. Don’t excuse bad behavior and don’t reward. When the allegations are proven to be true…Vote them out!!!

  55. Diva says:

IF this story is true, and no, I don’t believe it is, but IF it were, I would be incredibly disappointed in him, and I’m a staunch Obama supporter.

Yes, we’re all human, and none of us are perfect, but I expect my President to be a hell of alot closer to it than my ex-husband.

  56. L says:

@lin234 You know they have the white house correspondents dinner every year right? With celebrities? I’d google W’s, Clinton’s, and GB Sr. and would find tons of pictures of them with celebs as well.

  57. L says:

And @13-that’s John Oliver from the Daily show. That’s his girlfriend who is some kind of lobbyist from Vets for Freedom.

  58. CandyKay says:

I love all the people here who say no one cares about politicians’ sex lives in France.

Why, then, did the media cover every detail of justice minister Rachida Dati’s unmarried pregnancy, which pretty much ruined her career?

What about the published rumors of infidelity by both president Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni?Sarkozy had to deny it himself at a press conference with British PM Gordon Brown.

It seems to be just a cliched thing to say, this “nobody cares in France.” Not true.

  59. Jaxx says:

    And so it begins……….

  60. lin234 says:

L- yes, I do. I should have been more clear in terms of what I was saying. If you disregard the White House corespondent dinner, it still seems like he’s always associated with celebrities or giving a interview to some magazine about his perfect family life.

  61. ogechi says:

    Nonsense story.

  62. Jennifer says:

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….

  63. ligeia says:

it seems like now would be a good time for America to do away with the institution of marriage. divorce rate is already at 50% and these that stay married almost all end up cheating anyway (at least looking at the news makes it seem so). so….let’s stop getting married and start openly screwing around everything that moves: this seems to be the new thing.

  64. Leek says:

Vera Baker is really beautiful. I don’t care who Obama bangs, and if it helps him work on the economy and unemployment, then cheat away, Mr. O.

  65. Lilias says:

There is no double standard. You can’t just throw that term out whenever you feel like it.

If it were Bush, it would probably end up being a joke of some kind-seeing as Bush didn’t seem smart enough to carry on an affair and do other things. *joking*

People highly doubt this is true for a number of reasons:

The supposed claim that there was video proof has been retracted.

The only proof is a claim from a limo driver and he can’t know for sure where she went after she left his limo.

The chick in question says nothing happened.

  66. dread pirate cuervo says:

I think this is bullshit. Just some rightwingers looking for a Lewinsky Part 2.

On the other hand, I rememebr reading an article that said most presidents display sociopathic tendencies, but how that level of arrogance was almost a prerequisite for the job.

  67. Iggles says:

Ugh. This is so stupid. Why is such a non-story getting so much press from the mainstream media?

    Journalism is dead.

  68. TaylorB says:

I bet if you were to round up all of the Senators, Reps, VP’s and POTUS’ over the years involved in affairs or sex scandals, on both sides of the aisle, you could populate a town. Both parties are positively two faced about the issue, it is only ‘bad’ when the other folks do it. Pure silliness. But I will say there are exceptions, like Moshe Katsav who was a rapist or Foley who was sexually harassing his teenage pages.

As for this story it sounds pretty much full of hooey. If is is true I would be very disappointed, but considering the Birthers, etc. rolling out unfounded rumor after rumor, much like some folks did to Bush it seems like some people just throw accusations about to see if something sticks. Which is pretty sad.

  69. I should be working says:

    My thoughts on this story:

I still think she’s pretty, but Ashley Judd looks like she’s aged 50 years in the last 10.

    That is all.

  70. TaylorB says:

#70. I totally agree, she has aged. Now Cynthia Nixon looks great and a beautiful dress, I can’t say the same for her wife that tux looks stupid on her and it doesn’t fit.

  71. mockey says:

    @ CandyKay
the media reported about it, but I can tell you nobody gave an effin shit…
Nobody will hate sarkozy for cheating, for his awful politics yes.

  72. jennab says:

i hope it’s not true but you know he is president with huge decisions to make, and i would prefer if he were relaxed and calm while making decision for our country so if takes some booty on the side i dont care. well all michelle is the HBIC

  73. hellen says:

Cynthia Nixon’s boobs are headed south for the winter. Honey, give those girls some support.

  74. Aviatrix says:

@CandyKay EXACTLY! Isn’t it pretty much known that the Sarkozy’s have an open marriage? Maybe that’s why France is the shining beacon of a Utopian society. France is just too cool for school.

As soon as the Brits wrap up their own election, Sarkozy can address the rumors to a new PM -or Gordon Brown again. Good luck with that.

  75. RonPaul2012 says:

Obama is worthless regardless if this story is true or not. He makes Bush look like a GOOD president

  76. Blaque Label says:

This is more BULLSHIT just like he was not born in the USA and claims he isn’t AMERICAN… Last time I checked Hawaii was our 50th state… Get over it all you sour grape motherfucker’s face up to it WE have a BLACK President and he’ll be re -elected for another term again too. You haters don’t just like it haha jokes on you JACK…

    BL

  77. Kim says:

Globe had a story that he was involved in a gay affair with church member last year

  78. Ironic... says:

“Obama is worthless regardless if this story is true or not. He makes Bush look like a GOOD president”

PLEASE tell me you were trying to be sarcastic here…you’re comparing 15 months of a presidency to 8 years?

I refuse to believe anyone would be that stu…never mind…

  79. Anastasia says:

Hahaha! CB, you got your first Paultard!

  80. eden says:

I don’t believe it. Not ONE woman has come forward about having any sort of relationship before Michelle. No preschool crush, no high school love. He never dated anyone before Michelle. Name one girlfriend he had. ONE???!!! That’s right, you can’t!!! Strange, huh?

  81. Cheyenne says:

Lilias: If it were Bush, it would probably end up being a joke of some kind-seeing as Bush didn’t seem smart enough to carry on an affair and do other things.
    ================================================

Begging the question of who in hell would want to sleep with George Bush anyway?

  82. Laura says:

I don’t like Obama. And I really wish all the other people who don’t like Obama would quit making up bullshit stories about why we should hate him, because there are a million true reasons we should, you know? So focus on them and not the fake stuff (a Muslim, not a real citizen, etc.)
Actually I think he’s a good person, just a piss poor president.

  83. Dani says:

Everyone is saying that it speaks volumes about your character if you cheat. True, but that doesn’t tie in with how you run the country.

Clinton was a horn dog, but yet he still managed to pull off a pretty good president, cheater or not. Ones character doesnt always have to do with how they will handle a job.

Clinton is a cheater, and then lied to the American public about it. He lied about his personal life. Bush WASN’T a cheater but he lied to the American public about invading another country. Gee, I wonder which is worse to do.

Just because you may not have the best morals, doesn’t mean you can’t do your job.

  84. Jag says:

I’m in the U.S. and don’t care about politicians’ sex lives. Tell me about how they vote, if they lie about where they get their money, what they are going to do for the environment, and those types of things. Their sex life is between them and their significant other, imo.

  85. Zelda says:

Lilias: If it were Bush, it would probably end up being a joke of some kind-seeing as Bush didn’t seem smart enough to carry on an affair and do other things.

Cheyenne: Begging the question of who in hell would want to sleep with George Bush anyway?

    ==============================================

    @CHeyenne
I am a left-wing non-American, who deeply loathes the Bush administration and all they have done to the world.

But I have had at least two extremely satifying erotic dreams about Dubya. Hey–I was asleep! It’s not my fault! Right?

Ever walk of shame to your own coffeepot in the morning?
    *shameface*

Oooh I would also like to agree with people who are saying that politicians sex lives don’t matter. As long as they’re not buying gifts with taxpayer money or disappearing to Jamaica with their lovers, it’s really between them and their wife. 87. I must say that your entire web log is awfully topical. I have been expending loads of spare time within the last couple weeks exploring at exactly what is out there consistent with the very fact that I will be arranging to launch a weblog. Gotta adore where software has come during the previous 9 years.
