The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have formed their own “rota” system of British, American and international reporters. The Sussex rota gets briefings from Prince Harry and Meghan’s team, often on background, and the rota also gets updates on Harry and Meghan’s schedules (mostly Harry’s schedule). Team Sussex has handed out details about Harry’s public events and itinerary in advance several times already since the Sussexes’ UK return. Well, it turns out that Team Sussex gave a detailed itinerary to Nottingham Live last Wednesday, the day before the Sussexes visited Nottingham. The outlet published the “minute by minute” schedule. Guess who’s mad about it? Becky English, the head of the royal rota and the Daily Mail’s main royal reporter. Fun sidenote: no Mail reporter has been included in the Sussex rota, probably because the Mail’s Australian branch published the Sussexes’ embargoed itinerary when they visited Australia this past spring.
On the latest episode of the Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential, Royal Editor Rebecca English and a panel of royal experts discuss Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s quasi-royal tour of Nottingham, their first joint public engagement since returning to Britain in August.
Last Thursday, the Sussexes returned to the city where, nearly nine years ago, they made their first official appearance as an engaged couple, this time visiting three charities with which they have longstanding links.
The day before the Sussexes arrived, local news website Nottingham Live published a detailed itinerary of their tour, revealing exactly where the couple would be and when. English told the show that such a ‘blow-by-blow’ account published in advance was highly unusual, explaining that timings for royal engagements are never released beforehand because of security concerns.
Police were forced to intervene during the visit when crowds blocked Harry and Meghan’s car, Hello! Reported. As private citizens, the Sussexes are responsible for managing and promoting their own events. English said she suspected the couple’s own team had released the itinerary.
‘In light of what Harry and Meghan have said about serious concerns over their security, you have to question it,’ she argued. ‘Why are they doing this? They clearly want the crowds there. Are they trying to provoke a situation where there is an incident by encouraging people to come down there, and then saying afterwards: ‘Look, we didn’t have the police, we can’t handle it’? They are encouraging people to go down there. None of this makes sense unless, of course, you are quite suspicious of their motives. Why are Harry and Meghan doing it? It really does make me question their motives.’
Senior Editor-at-Large Richard Kay agreed with English that it was ‘hard not to be cynical’ about the Sussexes’ motives, given Harry’s determination to have his security reinstated.
Harry lost his automatic taxpayer-funded protection in 2020, after stepping back as a working royal and moving abroad. The decision was based partly on the fact that he would no longer be living in Britain full time. With the Sussexes now back in the country, a new review of whether the taxpayer should fund their protection is back under way.
‘Things could easily get out of hand,’ Kay said. ‘How useful that would be in Harry’s ongoing debate about how he wants his full-time security reinstated. It’s hard not to be cynical about that process.’
My honest-to-god guess is that Nottingham Live probably did the same thing the Mail did in Australia – published something which was supposed to be embargoed information, a not-for-publication detailed itinerary which was only supposed to be shared with members of the press. That makes the most sense logically. It would also make sense for a Mail reporter to throw a tantrum after another outlet stole their whole “thing.”
I also find all of the twisting, turning and wailing on the Sussexes’ security issue to be so f–king stupid at this point, especially because by ALL indications, Harry stopped caring. It’s clear that the Sussexes’ plans in the UK are not contingent on police protection, which is still absolutely bonkers to me. Their risk assessment is still being slow-walked, and I don’t even believe that Harry and Meghan will get any kind of firm answer for months. And when the answer is “nope,” they’ll still stick around. Even without the Nottingham Live issue, Team Sussex announced this visit days ahead of time and clearly wanted their supporters to show up. Which is honestly a whole other security conversation.

Iirc, Becky in her last article talked about the DM not being briefed while other journalists were. She said ofc she couldn’t blame the other journalists for just doing their jobs. Buuuuut, it sure sounds like there was some jealousy there. The Sussexes are causing schism in the rota! And yeah, the Sussexes obviously wanted their supporters to attend and the supporters that went looked thrilled to be there. Whatever the security situation, I can only imagine both Harry and Meghan felt comfortable with it.
“I can only imagine both Harry and Meghan felt comfortable with it.”….famous last words. Truth be told, Harry has bad instincts.
The Daily Mail is salty they weren’t invited, and have no access to Harry or Meghan’s feelings regarding anything.
I dont think there’s any way that Harry and Meghan are putting themselves in danger as some sort of “gotcha” moment. do people think Harry’s goal is to say “well my wife is now dead so I deserve security?”
I think Nottingham Live released the itinerary probably someone there was excited about the visit. It’s also clear they had police protection during the visit as well as their regular security.
People here take Boshoff seriously now apparently and yesterday she said they had a liaison officer working with them from the security office who was there to help assess threats and security needs. So that doesn’t sound like a “no” to me in terms of security, it sounds like a middle ground has been reached. I also think its entirely possible that there is intel sharing with their security team (which is what they wanted) which removes some of the security concerns.
Anyway….all that to say, English is spitting mad that she’s being cut out of all of this, and the funny thing is that I think she would be cut out whether she worked for the DM or the Times. Harry can’t stand her.
Let’s be honest no police force is going to wasn’t anything bad happening to the Sussexes on their watch. They may lack the blanket VIP package but they are clearly being taken care of.

I think you’re spot on. I’ve felt from the beginning of this that some arrangement must have been made for H&M to be willing to take their family back to the UK at all.
The thing that makes the most sense is that there is an agreement that was been put in place with the government, (likely before they moved back) to do the information sharing that has been a core part of what they needed to feel safe all along.
I would argue that getting up-to-the-minute briefings for their security detail may be even more valuable to them than allowing their protection officers to carry guns.
If they do have an embedded liason officer, that’s another big piece. And clearly local police are not being blocked from giving the same crowd management support that they might to any celebrity.
H&M don’t necessarily need RPOs. They need information and reliable responses when appropriate.
Is it possible that the British gov. and or BP are teaming/working with the Sussexes? Most if not all the gov. reps. agree that the Sussexes should get security. Two PMs spoke positively for H&M’s security. The Sussexes met with king and queen. BP issued statement saying king was happy about the return. The British media has since been making the turn toward welcoming the Sussexes and has even been advocating for their security. H&M have been seen out together and separately without noticeable taxpayer security. The Sussexes make all or most of the front pages, tv time, and online time. BP issued statement about their status then promptly did the necessary mopping up. Their so-called abrupt return may turn out to be not so abrupt after all.
This whole article is crrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaappppppppppppp!
Royal engagement dates and times are almost always announced beforehand! Duh. Unless, of course, it’s a last-minute “surprise” engagement.
And police routinely provide crowd control at pre-announced, high-profile public events. This is no different from a concert or a major sporting event.
Regarding Richard Kay’s suggestion that things could “easily get out of hand” and how useful that would be for Harry’s ongoing security battle… Seriously? Does Kay actually believe Harry would deliberately engineer a crowd-control problem, potentially putting everyone, including his own wife, in danger, just to strengthen his case with RAVEC? That’s absurd.
As for Harry and Meghan’s at-home security arrangements, I suspect they’ve coordinated with local police in the Cotswolds to put temporary security measures in place. I seriously doubt Harry would allow himself and Meghan to be sitting ducks.
And its has never entered y’all minds that they already have security.its obvious security has been worked out already. The news just haven’t been released publicly. Meg was seen with police convoy & a British protection officer recently
You constantly say this! We are not talking about local police. We are talking about RAVEC changing their designation to them allowing their security team information on things that may impact their visit and having taxpayer funded security that would block roads, do crowd control, join convoys, etc. It’s very similar to what the late Queen did for them when they came over for the Jubilee. She flat out made sure her personal security met them and had them go nonstop from the airport to Frogmore. Charles is not doing the latter even a little bit. They are in essence trying to do an ad hoc style arrangement.
I think that Scooter and the tampon King thought that if they prevented them from getting security they would shy away from events like Nottingham. I think that it was a smart move to show the clowns otherwise!
