I’m sorry I’m getting to this story a little late, but I didn’t even know if I wanted to write about Gwyneth Paltrow’s dumb, snotty ass today. In this week’s very special GOOP, Gwyneth is showing off photos of the loft that she had renovated and decorated – in Nashville. Just so she could deign to live somewhere peasanty while filming in Nashville for two months. Because a hotel just wouldn’t do, and neither would an already furnished house or apartment. Heavens, no! Don’t you know the stench of “peasant” reeks in those places?!? So Gwyneth had the producers of her “very limited independent film–scale budget” film fund her little renovation project just so she could have someplace fabulous where her children wouldn’t have to interact with peons.
With a very limited independent film–scale budget, Annette Joseph transformed an ideal (yet very raw) two bedroom downtown Nashville loft into a cozy, light filled space that was just perfect for my family’s stay there. Housed in a building called “The Icon” in the up-and-coming “Gulch” area, Annette and her team worked tirelessly and achieved the unachievable in 10 days! Below, Annette chronicles how it was done. She is one impressive lady.

Look at this place – this was all done for Gwyneth, according to her style and specifications. And she’s bragging about this sh-t on her GOOP. To make this interesting, I’m going to tag these photos with comments in the voice of Goop.

A whole new kitchen (at least $20K) and all new furnishings (at least $25K), plus tile and other stuff, PLUS paying people to work non stop really long hours, you have to figure it was at least $100-150K, if not more. For 2 months.
If I were an investor on that small, independent film, I’d be pretty pissed.

Nah, someone will scoop up that loft post Goopy residence and pay top dollar. Sounds like a good investment for the film and with goopy advertising it someone will want to buy where she has breathed.
Curious if she has donated to the recent flood relief efforts in Nashville. I’ve never heard her mention one word about it yet it really was devastating to the city.
She really needs to stop with the cosmetic tweakery. She’s looking less and less like GP and more like a 60 year old former Bond girl.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the building owner pitched in a bit. The sheer rentability of that loft now that Gweneth has “lived” there has or will skyrocket.
Also, my first thought is that she was pitching that area of nashville, saying it’s up and coming…putting it on the map. the film will recoup it’s expenditures…and economic growth in the area may be a result, as well.
That was my thought too. The film will totally resell this place and get their money out of it when the film is done. It’s a nice looking place.
I agree that because of Gwyn’s association with the loft, the investor will see a better return. The place looks great.
babycakes – she actually does have a link to a donation site on her GOOP. I haven’t heard her talk about it at all either, considering how much she has talked about this Nashville movie, but at least she did put up the link.
cowbell, hopefully you’re right and whoever spent all that money renovating it for her gets it back when they sell. It still just seems like quite an ordeal to go through for her, when she could have stayed in a hotel or a place that was already furnished.
As an Interior Designer and an archi-phile I have to say I think it’s great that she did something to improve her work location while she was there. She’d get kudos for donating to the flood victims or whatever else. This may not be your pet “charity”, but she bettered Nashville by doing it. Beautiful design may not put food in the mouths of the hungry, but it can make you feel better about yourself without even realizing it which in turn can inspire you to be a better person, to achieve at a higher level. She may have done that for herself, but she left it for someone else to appreciate and the neighbors and community to benefit from higher home values, etc.
OMG-we’re picking on the fact that she has attached earlobes now?? How pathetically far will some people reach to attempt to insult a celebrity they don’t like for some random (and probably just plain silly) reason? They’re called attached earlobes, and while it’s a recessive trait millions and millions of people have them–just like redhair, blue eyes, etc. etc. *rolls eyes*
I still SO don’t get the Gwyneth hate. I’ve been a fan for years and years and never ever found her to be repulsive or snotty. And I’m pretty picky about what celebrities I like and don’t like! She’s always come across and intelligent and earnest. As much as I love Celebitchy I’m increasingly more tempted to boycott because the Gwyneth hate is pretty lame, baseless and comletely overboard. Altho I don’t know if I can live without reading about Lindsay’s cracked out drama…

I think it’s cool she did that. The building is named because it is going to have lofts in a neighborhood that is on the rise. She gave someone the opportunity to give it attention.
There are plenty of things to make fun of her for but I just don’t think this is one of them.
If someone came and did that in one of our cities it would be pretty effin’ cool.

I would rather be trapped in an elevator with Spencer Pratt, Russell Brand and Ann Coulter for eight hours than have to spend one minute with this woman. She is so delusional and removed from the world that I’m surprised people are still even casting her in movies. Urgh – hate her, hate her, hate her.

If she stayed in a hotel for two months, that money is GONE. At least the loft was an investment, for all the reasons stated above.
I think it’s lovely. The kitchen is just like the one in her Hampton’s house – maybe so the kids feel ‘at home’?

The spelling of approximately got me.
A hotel large enough for her family in Nashville would have probably cost somewhere around $600/night. If Gwynnie and her kiddies stayed for 60/nights (2 months) the cost would have been about $36,000. And that doesn’t include the meals she would have had to order from room service for her kids because she can’t cook in a hotel. So add another $10K or so and that would be somewhere around $50K down the drain. Instead, the producers of the movie probably spent less than that to renovate and furnish this loft. The kitchen has mid-level appliances and the furniture looks like Restoration Hardware rather than high-end stuff. (The wages for the workers aren’t that much. They aren’t in NY or London, after all.)
So, to the critics: The producers made a really smart move to renovate this loft rather than put Gwynnie up in a hotel. Now they have a beautiful loft to sell for around $150,000 and they end up making money. I have a feeling the producers of this small movie are quite happy with what they did and, no, Gwynnie is not a snob.
This place looks sterile, stark and cold as I imagine her to be. Did I mention pretentious?
I’m willing to bet the folks hired and paid to do all of that remodeling work were happy for the paychecks! Sounds to me like she stimulated the local economy just a bit…how is that a bad thing again?
Miranda, where the hell are your from that ANYTHING only cost 150K? Bottom line, if the bathroom didn’t look like old cement with mold dripping, they could have gotten a deal. Now the new owner has to pull off all of that tile and go for an aesthetic bathroom. No dice. This place IS a waste of money and I’m surprised Gwyneth posted this debacle. Everything she touches = One Big Fail.

I didn’t think of the resale value of the flat. Some of the stuff was nice in it, but I found the overall effect very cold. And lol, was her husband there at all? ‘Cause I don’t know many guys who would care to live in a place primarily white, with splashes of hot pink.
I don’t get all the hate either. The loft is not to my taste, but I know a lot of people who would absolutely decorate in this modern style. I think it will sell nicely and like that she gave a small boost to the local economy and has a place on her website for donations. I only see a little hot pink in the living room, and those are just throw pillows Chris can toss on the other chair if they offend him so. For the most part I see white and charcoal; I think he could handle it for the few months they were there. I am more amazed by the thought of all that white and small children. She’s a lot braver than I am.

Okay, so I am from Nashville and just so you guys know, the place she was staying is NEW. She was able to choose finishes she wanted from the get go and the cheapest one bedroom condo starts at $220,000.00, so I have no idea where anyone would come up with $150,000.00. Pretty expensive, even if they can resale, for an independent film budget. I wouldn’t doubt if they didn’t arrange a deal with the condo owners ahead of time for her to stay gratis for the benefit of the advertising value. Just sayin’…

As someone who lives in Nashville, the Icon is already a beautiful building in a very popular neighborhood. It is also a brand new building having only been opened for less than 5 years or so, so renovations really wouldn’t be necessary because it is a beautiful building as is. The only reason the Loft looked so rough is because she chose to tear it up, which is certainly her prerogative, but the standard features in those lofts are already gorgeous.
How many people working a low-budget job have loads of cash spent on remodeling the place that they live for ONLY 2 months!? In this economy? In this devastated city? Wow.
This is why she’s not that great of an actress. Meryl Streep said once that real actors have to be in touch with the feelings of the time. They have to be very aware of others. Gwyneth is only aware of herself.
To be fair, she’s hardly alone, considering she’s friends with Madonna–the Queen of ME. We live in a culture which caters to and condones the worst in celebrity self-centeredness. To her, it’s business as usual. Boy, is that sad.

Remodeling a loft in The Icon for a two month stay seems a little absurd, especially since it’s a relatively new and very trendy building. But, whatever. What strikes me as truly odd is that she has espoused her love of Nashville when Nashville didn’t entirely return the sentiment. If it weren’t for Karen Elson, Gwynnie would have been just another insignificant celebutard to whom we have no desire to cater or coddle.
I wonder if she donated to the Nashville Flood Victims fund? What is wrong with these celebrities?

Look, before you rip her to shreds…this is good for the economy as it put local people to work. I don’t like the duress on the film company or the added stress on their time and budget however i do like the artwork and furniture purchases that may have aided some locals pocket. So before you go crazy with criticism, think! The web publicity on this enterprise is extensive and many cases positive, demonstrating the brevity and excellence of the project and giving added publicity to the designers and products. This is all good for economy.
She got a good thing done with the renovations. It did look aweful before.

That is the one great thing about Nashville. We do get a good number of movie stars filtering through. Even the country has gone global. Nashville still has a good rep.
