Gwyneth Paltrow talks up her strong marriage in a new interview

goop11

Gwyneth Paltrow is the cover girl for the April issue of InStyle UK. I actually think the UK edition reused some of the photos and some of the interview from Goopy’s appearance in the American InStyle edition in January. But there are still some quotes from the piece that I hadn’t read yet… like Gwyneth talking about her husband, yet again.

What is a typical night at the Paltrow-Martin house?
“Well, last Saturday night, I made turkey meatballs and we all had dinner together, then put the kids to bed and watched a movie on Apple TV…We always go out one night of the weekend, because it’s nice for me to get out of the house. I cook so much during the week, it’s good for me to have a break and eat something that I don’t make, like sashimi or Indian food.”

Goopy is back to being American: “London is great, but I miss America. Nowadays, I feel like we’re citizens of everywhere.”

Gwyneth, on singing with Jay-Z: “I got onstage with him at the Royal Albert Hall [in 2006]. I stood in the back and sang with him. That was the night of my 34th birthday and I drank a bunch of champagne before going on just to get through it. It was also before I had any singing lessons. I was sooo nervous, but that was just for fun. I’m glad I did it.”

Goopy on having girls‘ nights in: “I like having dance parties at my house and being super-goofy with my girlfriends,” says Paltrow, who splits time between homes in L.A. and the UK. “We just play music like whatever is on the radio and then old stuff – Michael Jackson, disco – and new stuff; we mix it up. It’s fun.”

On Country Strong: “Last night, when I was watching the film, I thought, ‘This is the best job I’ve ever done. Normally I can’t stand to see myself but with this film, I felt like it all came together, all that hard work and putting myself in such an uncomfortable position where I felt so scared of how I was going to do it. I’m happy with how it turned out. I’ve never prepared for anything more in my life. It was a big responsibility. There was studying with an accent coach, learning to play guitar and, of course, the singing. My voice didn’t have any power and I wanted to try to sing properly. I was so nervous about performing live scenes in the film, that’s so foreign to me.”

[From The Mail]

I just don’t get Gwyneth at this point. Like, is she trying to convince us that her life is so great and that her marriage is so strong and we will never know how wonderful and elite it is to be married to a rock star? Because I don’t think anyone is buying it at this point. It’s like she’s aiming for being snotty about how great her marriage is but she’s just really trying to convince herself.

Goopy reminds me of Victoria Beckham in that they’re both kind of asexual and care more about image than anything else. Maybe she turns a blind eye to her icky husband’s fooling around, (please the Bosworth?) because anything else would make her look almost human. I love that she thinks Country Strong was her best work. I guess that means she should stop and rest on her laurels.

  2. Cherry Rose says:

I think she talks about her marriage so often because otherwise people would forget, because you never see them together.

  3. malachais says:

She is airbrushed to the point where she looks like a different person, good grief. Sometimes I think that her marriage is actually OK, but the prediction that she’ll announce her divorce after this stupid country album rings true.

  4. guesty says:

Cue the divorce filing in a quick minute….

  5. Isabel says:

Yeah, the best marriages are the ones where there are no obvious signs of support and love. You hooker.

  6. Rita says:

I much prefer the pretentious. What a God awful and phoney interview. She is so setting up for a country audience. I could always take or leave her but now I’m getting sick of her. I mean “Dinner and a movie at home with my loving husband”, pajama slumber parties with Beyonce, and all that cooking she does at home with nobody to eat it, and “look how f’n wonderful I was in Country Strong!” She;s just redecorating the snow-globe. Pleazzzze.

  7. Someone Else says:

Sometimes I wonder if she goes to all this trouble to show Ben & Brad what they could’ve had (and no, I don’t care who broke up with who).

She strikes me as petty enough.

  8. Andrea says:

“I cook so much during the week”
    HA!

And she is older than I and not a wrinkle….airbrush!!!

  9. Annaloo says:

Good LORD, she is such a bore. Boring to look at, boring to watch, boring boring boring.

  10. Eve says:

She talks like the cure for cancer is in her poop — coming to think about it, she may actually do!. She also wants to remind us that no matter what we do, she’ll always have a better life than ours. Since we’re lame and don’t get her GOOP.

  11. hmmmm says:

I just wish she wouldn’t talk about needing to “get out of the house” when it seems she’s always running around doing movies, press, vacations, etc.

  12. everlyo says:

    Yawn and Yawn….

  13. brin says:

She sounds like a 50’s housewife slaving over a hot stove. Just doesn’t ring true, Goop.

  14. mia girl says:

I think there was a mix up at the magazine… they MUST have mistakenly printed their interview with the 2010 Betty Crocker Recipe Winner under Gwenyth’s name!

UGG… the only part missing from this ridiculous interview was GOOP’s hilarious story of baking 20 pies of all varieties for the country fair that never made to judging because her watch was still on London time!

  15. Sakyiwaa says:

i’ve never quite caught on to her appeal.

  16. Nanea says:

    Dame Gwyneth had… singing lessons?

    Ohh Kay.

Of course her marriage is strong, that’s why she needs to mention it in every other publication. I don’t get though why her husband doesn’t find the time to accompany her to the Academy Awards, even if he can’t be bothered to show his support at one single premiere, or at that phony “Walk of Fame” ceremony.

  17. Hot says:

    what a fake absorbed b*tch

  18. Jackson says:

    Bleh.

  19. gloaming says:

So, a winning combination cutting edge journalism brilliantly written, full of witty retorts from the interviewee?

    No?

    Oh, it’s Gwyneth and InStyle…….is see…….

  20. arock says:

she makes me want to stick a fork in my hand.
maybe chris isnt “here” anymore. he probably made one too many aside comments about her afflicted accent and she spun out of control, strangled him with a pair of lulumon yoga pants, shoved him into a protein burger and put whatever was left over into a bleach kit to highlight her hair…..its the perfect crime.

  21. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    BORING

    Snore…

My life has more excitement than the life she claims to have. And I am not in movies (notice I didnt say a movie star)

  22. sisi says:

she never even mentions her husband in this piece. You could imagine a single mum giving this interview and it would all fit.

Not saying that is the case though, but Chris seems nonexistent in this article.

  23. HotPockets says:

I saw an old picture of Goop the other day and she looks completely different from her Shakespeare in Love days, especially her jaw line! She has had more work done than originally suspected!

  24. mln76 says:

I am glad she enjoyed Country Strong because I was forced to see it and boy did it stink.

  25. Turquoise Blue says:

What a bogus interview, and how very transparent. For years she’s been all about the high fashion, intellectual European image and now suddenly she’s a goofy America-loving housewife? It really looks like she’s trying to sell to the country audience.

  26. arock says:

@sisi- he seems nonexistent period, as far as a marriage with her goes. hes a totally talented guy who does alot of his own stuff. maybe thats how it works, everyone doing their own thing and meeting in the middle. of course it could also be that hes scared of her.

  27. lucy2 says:

“I miss America.” (Because I’m now trying to be a country music star, and those suckers better think I like them or they won’t buy my album!)

Before I even read it, I thought “I bet she mentions Jay Z or Beyonce again” and what do you know…

  28. helen says:

Mmmmmm turkey meatballs. I so wish that just once, ONE of these multimillionaire working mothers would just admit they use nannies and cooks.

  29. TQB says:

It’s good for her to get out of the house?? Like she’s trapped there, day after day, and not off shooting a movie or attending a premier?

She makes me barf and i agree with @arock about martin’s demise. No great loss there.

  30. Susan says:

OMG – she has 2 young kids, she wants to keep her family intact and she’s selling a movie. No crime here.

  31. DGO says:

I practically choked on my tea while reading these comments! Hilarious! And yeah, the interview is pathetic.

  32. Ari says:

If she got sucked into a sinkhole I wouldn’t mind…I’d probably cheer.

  33. Sue says:

She bothers me I don’t hate her I just find her boring and full of herself and I don’t for one minuet believe that she’s little Miss Suzy home backer, I mean come on how stupid does she that we are that we will believe this crap.

  34. Kezia says:

I love how celebitchy works -I literally had ZERO interest in Goopy cause let’s be honest she’s a snoozefest (maybe even more so than her “hubbys” music)and now I’m obsessed with her Gooping ways, thank you Kaiser! Also she looks great on the cover, liberal use of the airbrush I assume??

  35. lisa says:

I still love her in Emma..

I just get tired of her talking about how “private” she keeps her marriage. The thing is when you talk all the time about how Private it is then it is no longer private. Plus I don’t like her superior attitude about other couples. As if the way she and Chris deal with the media is all that. She needs to realize that it is easier for she and Chris to be so “private’ because there is really little to NO PUBLIC interest in her marriage. So yeah you can avoid the media when the media is avoiding you.

When her children were young she was at EVERY Chris concert. Front and center with the children too. But he is alway so absent from her events.

Well I guess it works for them.

  36. the original bellaluna says:

Either she’s trying to convince herself (and the public along with her) that her marriage is actually fine, or she truly believes it is.

Maybe they’ve just agreed to phone it in for the kids’ sake; maybe they have an open marriage; maybe they just don’t care. Frankly, I don’t give a shit.

  37. original kate says:

wait – she had an accent coach for “country strong?” LMAO! ok, for those who haven’t seen it, goop says lines such as: “hiss that mah sawng?” and also “ah named her lawretta laynn, cuz she’s mah favrit sanger.” no exaggeration, it was that awful. truly an epically bad southern accent, and i’m from the south.

  38. Hmmm says:

Why did she have to mention that their tv was an Apple? Sheesh. She really is boring, and truth is fluid for her.

  39. Eden says:

Maybe I’m missing something but she barely mentioned her marriage and didn’t say a word about her “strong marriage”.
She stated that she cooked turkey meatballs for the whole family, she and her husband sat around watching TV and they go out once a week to eat.
No gushing or preaching about her marriage or her husband or even her life.
She dances with her friends, boozes before she gets on stage with Jayz, stretched herself for the the Country Strong role and was happy with the results, cooks a lot and misses America.
I didn’t see anything offensive in this interview at all. Girl can’t win.

  40. coexxi says:

It’s funny how this snoozville interview can induce quite some strong reactions!
I’m not a fan of the goops but I honestly don’t understand the hatred towards her. To me she seems a little bit out of touch but still harmless. I’m more bugged with people like LiLo or Mel Gibson or Charlie Sheen.

  41. paperjam says:

The title is so misleading; she barely mentions her marriage, and never Chris by name. Her life seems innocuous to me. Why does she strike such a bad chord with so many people? In the rare interviews he has given, Martin has said that he’s always been very shy and a geek, and that when he’s not performing, he stays as far away from the public as possible. She does the premiere tour when she has to, and the rest of the time, she’s taking her kids to school, working out, shopping, etc. Yes, people, she does cook. She’s said before that she’s taken cooking classes, and if you watch any of the GOOP videos, (which you all love to make fun of) you’ll see that she knows what she’s doing in the kitchen. Her life from the moment she was born has been different from the rest of us; nannies, private schools, money, and life in the public eye as the daughter of two famous parents. Cut her a break.

  42. Henriette says:

Methinks the “lady” doth protest too much!

  43. Madison says:

Her marriage seems more like an arrangement for the sake of her public image and the kids than a marriage, she does her thing and he does his. Even at the Grammy’s where you would expect Chris Martin to show up in support of his wife, he wasn’t there, weird couple, weird marriage.

  44. Str8Shooter says:

Methinks the Goopy doth protest too much…

  45. Zelda says:

I don’t see her mentioning her marriage at all, actually.

But—she sang onstage in 2006 and claims she was terrified and she’d never had any singing classes?

Not even while she was making an entire movie–Duets– about singing AND releasing a single with Huey Lewis in 2000?

    That’s…weird.

  46. Granger says:

I think Chris honestly likes the quiet life outside of the Hollywood machine — and Gwyneth THOUGHT she did too. But then she realized a couple of years ago that she missed and loves the limelight. Hence the obsessive working out (and constant references to her body), rebranding herself as some incredible lifestyle guru with GOOP, taking a role in a cheesy super hero movie, appearing in Glee, and adopting this crazy country music shtick. I hate to talk smack about somebody’s marriage, but I really do think they’re over, because he’s never going to live in her world.

  47. MissBitch says:

Does anyone notice that she doesn’t actually say his name? For all we know, she could be talking about going out with her personal assistant. I’m sensitive to that kind of stuff, kinda like body language…

Oh, and the Beckhams seem to be nice people. Their son is in my nephew’s class, and they have playdates n’ such. The kids are well behaved and well parented. Can’t say much about her cause she’s not around as much, but David’s a hands-on parent and a really nice, kind of shy guy, who is the hottest thing I’ve ever laid eyes on this decade.

  48. TQB says:

@MissBitch I kind of hate you right now. And I mean that in a true jealous rage kinda way. Tell them I’m excited for Posh 2.0!!!

  49. arock says:

@tqb- agreed. lets push for a beckham on hot dong friday.

  50. Newbie says:

I don’t get why she bugs so many people either. She seems a little “uppity” sometimes, but even then, I think there’s a possibility that people are reading too much into it. @MissBitch: lucky, lucky, lucky you!

  51. anyhoo says:

I don’t really see what the problem is.

  52. Estella says:

“I am glad she enjoyed Country Strong because I was forced to see it and boy did it stink.”

    Hahahahahahaaaaaa!!!!

  53. Quercus says:

I can’t believe I’m actually going to defend Her Goopiness, but… she did say at one point that she did not want to have her relationship with her husband be a public one. I think she had been through that and did not want to do it again, and I have to give her props for going to openings and such without him. It shows some spine and independence to make that choice and follow through on it.

Now letting you get back to the snark…

  54. Dea says:

Goop is a b..ch not for sticking in a failed marriage but for saying BS about it. She behaves like there are no married couples or people in relationships out there who can tell form their own experiences how much “in love” these two are. This marriage is one of the most fake ones in Hollywood in fact.

  55. di butler says:

Ditto on whoever said it above-her dialect coach for Country Song should be flogged. That was painful. When I hear a true Southerner like Holly Hunter speak on screen, it is such a relief after hearing those butchered dialects they troll out.

  56. Jayna says:

All the hate. I’m sure she does cook for her children every night. She has nannies there to help her while she does it. I don’t begrudge her that. I would love to have a live-in kind of grandmotherly type nannie, if I could, who lived in a mother-in-law apt in the back and could help me out when needed.

    Ah, back to real life.

  57. Kloops says:

Wait a minute, I’m still reeling from her belief that Country Strong was her best work! Holy crap. I, too, was forced to sit through it and I spent 90 minutes suffering.

  58. Erica says:

agree with Eden. If she mentions her husband’s name she’s bragging. If she doesn’t mention it their marriage is in trouble. If she misses England she’s a snob. If she misses America she’s trying to sell a movie. Give the girl a break. If she’s so god-awful boring why does she generate so many snarky comments. I can think of a lot worse things than having a successful career, smoking hot body, great marriage, beautiful kids and boatloads of money. Like parading my cattiness all over these forums every time some article on Gwyneth Paltrow comes out.

  59. jemshoes says:

Goopy looks very nice air-brushed. 😀

  60. Micki says:

With all that weekly cooking she’s never come around to prepare sashimi or Indian food? Shocking!

  61. Catherine says:

You guys just love to hate her but I think she is quite cute. Never read her blog but I like her style.

  62. Magsy says:

Shove your turkey meatballs and your cold ass hubby.

  63. Anti-icon says:

She has absolutely no sense of humor….that’s what I’ve discovered is her main problem.
