Joseph Gordon-Levitt asked on a coffee date by a cute girl with cancer

Over the summer, an attractive Marine put up a YouTube video asking Mila Kunis to be his date for the Marine Corps ball. She flip-flopped on whether she would accept his invitation, but one ballsy Marine changed the way celebrities and their fans interacted. Justin Timberlake got a Marine Corps Ball invitation too – and he just went this past weekend. Betty White got one, and a few others probably got some too. But would this YouTube date-proposal work for non-military personnel? Would it work with just an average person who just wants to have a coffee date with Joseph Gordon Levitt? I think it might. Above is the YouTube video by Lindsay Miller, a 26-year-old girl with cancer, and she really wants to have coffee with JGL.

Before I saw the video, I was kind of like “meh” on this story, but now that I’ve seen it – this girl is really cute and sweet, and she’s not coming across as creepy whatsoever. She’s just a girl with cancer who liked JGL’s performance in 50/50, and she’d like to hang out with him. She told Us Weekly, “After seeing Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s performance and seeing/reading some of his subsequent interviews about the film I thought, ‘This guy gets it. And he’s cute. I wonder if I could ever run into him somewhere.’ But even though I live in LA, it seems impossible to find him. It’s ridiculous…And it feels like I’m making a big leap from being an anonymous cancer ‘liver’ a few months ago to now starring in my own video. But, life is short. So, why not?” Aw. Sweetheart. She’s got me tearing up.

JGL apparently told E! News that he hadn’t seen the video yet, but that he had heard about it. DO IT!!! Please, JGL? Please meet this girl and have coffee with her and just be nice to her and give her a cool story. Plus, she’s a cutie. You might even want to take her out again and again.

I hate this whole situation. If he says no (which he is totally entitled to do) he’s a bad guy for saying no to a cancer patient. But he definitely shouldn’t have to do it.
If he wants to do it…then fine. But doing it because he’s being forced to is not going to be a pleasant experience for the girl. like imagine being there having coffee with him KNOWING he’s only doing it so he doesn’t look like a complete d-bag? How awkward and embarrassing.

  2. Rhiley says:

I saw this a few days ago on MSNBC and thought the same thing: she seems very cute and smart and motivated and like she realizes life is too short not to take chances. I looked at her blog too which is really quite good. I hope JGL does it. I love him so much and think that he is such a genuine guy. Good on her for asking him to hang out. And if he says no, I don’t think it would be like a Michael K sticking it to the barefoot cuntessa thing. If he has to let her down, I know he will do it in a manner that is not uncomfortable or weird.

  3. RocketMerry says:

You know, I feel like these videos are sort of unfair to the celebrities.
I feel for the girl and hope she’ll be cancer free soon, but the whole “public request” concept is just not right to me.
    I hope this trend stops.

  4. Mouse says:

I TOTALLY agree Lizzie. It’s an awkward situation all around… And really, how many more of these are we going to see? Is every celebrity now going to be obligated to accept every “civilian” youtube video invite?

  5. normades says:

@lizzle: Agreed, don’t like this new trend of people video asking stars out on dates.

  6. Jenny says:

There is blind gossip about him that he’s gay. But he is lovely and should go.

  7. normades says:

@Jenny: Doubt that. He quietly dated Devon Akoi and ERW. I tend to believe that the gay ones are the ones that showmance a la Clooney or Cooper.

  8. theaPie says:

Awww, he should totally do it. But keep it quiet. You know – just do it because it’s the right thing to do, not for the PR.

  9. LJ says:

yeah i agree I HATE this whole trend its so annoying!

  10. constance says:

I agree @lizzie. I think these things are really cute but it puts the “celeb” in an awkward position. You shouldn’t purposely pity party everyone into meeting you, no matter how innocent. That’s what I can kind of creepy.

Would we even discuss this if she was a fat girl without cancer? Not saying she is wrong for the video. I just think it’s sort of creepy how this youtube match maker trend is expanding.

How much longer until we hear about the first time a celeb says yes to a video date and comes back finding out it was a total scam from a stalker.

  11. Smithy says:

If I had cancer, I would DEFINITELY use it to take advantage of JGL! 😉

  12. cr says:

Jenny: There’s a blind gossip ‘gay’ item for just about everyone in Hollywood.

I admire her for having the guts to do so in such a public way. But, yes in some way it’s also very annoying.

  13. Swoooooon says:

Gahhhh The picture of him in the cop uniform….sigh…..<3

  14. jinni says:

I’m sure the guy that JGL’s character was base off of, who was the one that actually went through everything that happened in the movie and co-wrote the script would be the more appropriate person to ask out on a date. This just sounds to like an excuse to ask out a celebrity crush.

Plus like others have commented, I too think this is unfair to celebs because this puts them in between a rock and a hard place.
These kinds of requests should be made through “Make a Wish” foundation and others like that’s outside of the public eye.

  15. retyah says:

Ugh why do people do this? I think its just embarrassing…

    @lizzie I totally agree

  16. David says:

She is really cute. He should go on a date with her.

  17. SLM says:

What is the big deal? She asked to have coffee with him, not go to the Bahamas for a week. If he says no, she seems self-confident enough to handle it, but she can always say she asked. I think that’s the point – whether it is making a video date request or something bigger, we have to be bold enough to (pardon the cheesiness) seize the day, damn the consequences. He can decline without being villified. Betty White did it.

I’d much rather he have coffee with this girl than spend time with ScarJo.

  18. Marianne says:

The only thing with this trend, is that more and more people are going to expect they go on a date with a celebrity. If he says yes, what’s going to stop the next 100 fans from asking him. I’m sure he doesn’t have time, or doesn’t want to be bombarded with potential creepy people. And yet if he says no, everyone will think he’s a dick.

There’s lots of celebrities that i would love to have lunch with, but I’m not going to pursue them with a public request to go out with me. Now if I ever saw them in person, and THEY asked me….well thats a different story lol.

  19. wunder says:

Awwwww. . . she only asked him a Q and he can say, yes, no or jus ignore. No harm done!

That said, he should give her a coffee date jus cuz she’s so cute and he’s so cute. They’d both make the coffee so cute too. . . It would be the cute thing to do, and doing the cute thing is always really really cute.

  20. Mari says:

I used to live near an Army base. Guys would use the “I’m about to deploy and I’d really love to take you out” line. It was cute at first, and I was all “Awww, how sweet, I’d love to”, but after a while the whole shtick got really, really, really old and realizing half of them were married douches only helped to serve my “no” reponse. So, yeah, in my opinion this needs to stop.

  21. I Choose Me says:

Agree with lizzie et al. She seems cute and sweet but this trend needs to stop.

  22. V says:

Gah, he looks so much like Heath, it’s a little disturbing.

  23. JaneWonderfalls says:

Aww this was cute, I hope he’s takes her up on it, and @Lizzie I don’t think he will look like a douche if he say’s no. Many people would understand but I feel what’s the harm in getting coffee with someone, I have a feeling he will enjoy this as much as the girl would.

  24. dahlia1947 says:

Oh I hope he says yes! Um I think I would like Officer Levitt to arrest me! 😉 There are alot of fantasies going through my mind just by looking at that picture.. Ok I’ll stop.

  25. Zimmer says:

I think celebs should meet with fans occasionally, after all, where would they be without fans? Having said that, the fan should expect a security pat down and a criminal record check first.

  26. alex.barstar says:

While I agree life is short and this young woman has the right to do as she pleases on youtube…talk about putting buddy on the spot…now he has to say yes and for what?

I think this whole thing is in bad taste…almost like using sympathy for sex…I haven’t had sex in months who wants to step up? :p

Best of luck to lindsay and joe 🙂

    Yours truly,
    Bitter Old Man

  27. Bopa says:

I think she’s innocently asking but he should be able to politely say no without people demonizing him.

  28. DeeVine says:

I have nothing but well wishes for the girl but this asking celebs out on dates via youtube is getting out of hand. None of us ever wants to be put on the spot like that.

  29. Cletus says:

Yeah, this thing of putting mofos on the spot like that is fucked up. Yall quit it, for reals. Unless it works…. in which case prepare yourselves for the newest youtube video wherein I lie my whole ass off about having some disease or something about how the Taliban captured me and kept me in a hole and made me eat lima beans and brussel sprouts but I totzlly lived but my psyche is all effed the eff up anc the only cure for me is RYAN REYNOLDS PLEASE CALL ME AHHH GOD!

  30. DarkEmpress says:

I want to say some really vulgar sexual things about him!!! I’m crazy about him!

  31. Ell says:

So what if the celebrity is put in an awkward position, their fans are their bread and butter. Some of you need to keep things in perspective – we have cancer victim/soldiers fighting our wars v the spoilt celeb who only has to give a small amount of his/her precious time, I know who I’m rooting for.

  32. ToastedSkin says:

Aww she’s cute. He should totally do it. & kudos to her for having the guts to ask him.

  33. skeptical says:

i see a slippery slope here.
If he says yes to her, even though i get why it’d be cool, since she is sick and all… where would celebs be allowed to draw the line?
When is it ok to say “no” to some puppy-eyed fan who is getting sympathy via youtube?

  34. This is a says:

This is a Excellent Weblog You will probably find Interesting that we Encourage A person.

  35. Dani says:

    1. I really really like JGL. He is just so gosh darn cute.

    2. He can say no. Betty White and ScarJo rejected one of these invitations (politely) and there was no harm, no foul.

  36. I have been surfing on-line more than 3 hours today, but I by no means found any interesting article like yours. It is beautiful value sufficient for me. Personally, if all website owners and bloggers made good content material as you did, the internet will be much more useful than ever before.
