I didn’t even remember that Carrie Underwood and Chace Crawford were together in 2008 as some sort of couple. I’m really reporting this because I think Carrie is calling out Chace Crawford for staging fake relationships. She told Now! Magazine (dubious source, but still) that she was unsure why Chace was with her back then and feels like it was a publicity stunt. Here’s what she said, and you can tell Carrie is parsing her words.
Carrie Underwood says dating Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford back in 2008 was definitely one of the biggest mistakes she ever made in the romance department. “In my heart, I knew it wasn’t right,” she told UK’s NOW Magazine. “You never really know why someone is with you. I feel like it was more of a publicity stunt.”

I looked up what Carrie said about the relationship at the time, and she admitted that they broke up over text message. She also said that the media made more out of it than it was. “It’s difficult while you’re dating because people always make a lot bigger deal of things than they actually are.”
So did Chace spurn her and is she getting back at him for using her for fame, or is she saying that they never really had much going on? Back in 2008 there were plenty of rumors about Chace and his costar Ed Westwick, who were living together at the time. Those two laughed it off and denied there was anything romantic going on between them. Chace was also spotted vacationing with N Sync singer JC Chasez in 2008, and Chasez similarly denied a relationship with him.
Carrie has a history of talking smack about her exes so this doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s calling out Chace for staging a fake relationship. She told Esquire that her song “Cowboy Casanova” wasn’t about her ex, Tony Romo, because “I would never immortalize a guy that did me wrong. I would never give him that much credit.” What about “Before He Cheats?”
Chace Crawford is now said to be interested in ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrews. According to US Weekly’s latest print edition the two have gone on dates “a couple times” and “they’re getting to know each other.” A source close to Andrews says “she only sees him as a friend.”
Update: Thanks to those of you who pointed out that Tony Romo is now married to Chace’s sister, Candice Crawford, with whom he just had a baby. So that may be affecting Carrie’s view of her relationship with Chace quite a bit.

I think every man in Hollywood has been CALLED “gay”, but that doesn’t mean they are gay. The funny thing about that accusation is that you can’t prove it one way or the other without a sex tape.
I have known people who have been called “gay” repeatedly on blogs, even though they were completely heterosexual. I think the public finds it more fun think of stars as having these secret lives, because it is pretty boring to think that they are just normal people with unusual jobs. Crazy stuff happens, but crazy stuff also happens in the burbs.

I don’t really get how Before He Cheats is an example of Carrie immortalizing an ex? I mean I know what the song is about but I don’t think it’s ever been characterized as a depiction of her real life? I just thought that was a kind of hilarious hit song she had a lot of fun with.

Though she’s very open talking about her husband now, I think Carrie’s genuinely one of those people who tries to keep most of her personal life private. There weren’t even any pictures of her with her husband until after they got engaged. So, I think Chace’s calling the paparazzi did piss her off. It was well known in Nashville that his team was leaking about their relationship to the tabloids too.
It’s pretty much his team’s M.O. to try to pump up celeb status by linking their clients to pretty women. I believe Matt Morrison, JC Chasez, and Chace hang out a lot because they have the same manager.
As far as Tony Romo, I believe he tried to get back together with Carrie during 1 of his many breakups with Jessica Simpson and that pissed Carrie off. I kind of like that she isn’t shy about calling them out for it, but she shouldn’t talk about it too much. A little surprised she even said anything at this point.
She’s a real life Betty Draper…she poisons people. She pulled some sh*t when Jessica Simpson was with Tony, saying that he still called her and of course Jessica took the bait and discussed it.
The problem is, Tony DID call her. Only, it was during one of his mini-breakups with Jessica. The timeline’s pretty easy to follow: the Allure interview where Carrie made the comment took place the day before she was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry (according to Allure), so it was early May 2008, right around the time of Ashlee Simpson’s wedding, also right around the time when everybody was abuzz about a Jessica/Tony breakup. Jessica and Tony would wind up getting back together after that, but I don’t believe Carrie knew that at the time she made the comment.
So, not the most gracious comment about Tony Romo but I don’t believe it was something she was aiming at Jessica Simpson. It just turned out that way when the interview was published months later and Tony & Jessica had gotten back together. As far as Carrie’s propensity to talk a little smack about exes, I don’t know. It feels like she doesn’t do it that often and honestly, if they’ve been douches, I don’t blame her for saying something as long as she doesn’t dwell on it.
But back to Tony Romo for a minute: the thing to know about him is that before getting married, he was a serial returner to previous relationships. In between dating Carrie and Jessica, he went back to dating a long time civilian ex (was photographed with her at an event – this is the one who dumped him right before he became the Cowboys starter). He also went on a couple dates with Candice Crawford before she went back to college (so: he was dating Candice around the time Carrie & Chace started dating). When there was trouble with Jessica, he tried to get back together with Carrie among others. And sure enough, after things ended with Jessica, he went back to Candice. And, that one has obviously worked out so congratulations all around.

I don’t know much about either of these people, but I’m glad she has spoken about the possibility this was a stunt and therefore acknowledging that it happens.
I have a friend who was friends with her when she was in college and my friend told me about this back then. How Carrie was so hurt that she believed him and how he seemed to not care unless they were in public. It’s sad and I think she learned a great deal about the celebrity life through that.
