Anne Hathaway’s black gown at Tokyo ‘Les Mis’ premiere: pretty or unflattering?

Here are some photos of Amanda Seyfried, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway at the Tokyo premiere of Les Miserables today (yesterday? tomorrow?). I’ve spent the last 20 minutes looking for a designer ID on Anne’s dress, but I haven’t been able to find it yet. It looks like a Marc Jacobs design, or Marc Jacobs-inspired, so it’s either Jacobs or Louis Vuitton… or maybe Prada. I have no idea, but I’ll update if I find out. Whatever it is, I’m not a big fan. I like that Anne defaults to black dresses a lot, mostly because she looks great in black and she’s tried worse alternatives too, but I’m not crazy about the skirt and the hem on this dress. And she just wore a strappy Victoria Beckham a few weeks ago too, so the top part feels too familiar. I do know Amanda’s designer ID: she’s wearing Brood.

Hugh looks nice… but he always looks nice, doesn’t he? Lost in the buzz about whether Anne Hathaway is going to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress for this film (and whether she’ll win), I think many critics are kind of forgetting to talk about Hugh Jackman, the actual star of the film. I have a theory: since Hugh Jackman’s Broadway turns, he’s become known as a big song-and-dance man. When he delivers the goods in Les Miserables, he’s not met with praise but rather a “Fine. We knew you could do it. Whatever.” That’s unfair to him. I would like to see Hugh get a nomination too, just because I think he would really appreciate it, and it would be nice to see him on every red carpet this awards season.

Oh, dear. Poor Anne. With that cropped hair, this sexless wonder now truly resembles a gay male pelican transvestite.

  2. Chatcat says:

Yuck. Her and ScarJo…I just don’t get the attraction. She was cutesy in that Princess movie and that was it. ScarJo hasn’t been cute in anything but dress is fugly and woman in it is meh at best.

    • Kiki says:

      ScarJo or Amanda Seyfried?

    • Cliff says:

      That’s Amanda Seyfreid…?
Or are you referring to Scarlett in some other unseen photo…..?

      • anniel says:

She is referring to Scarlet I assume she knows this is Amanda in the picture. I totally agree this girl is so boring. She needs to put a weave asap! And the other girl Miss Seyfreid has a gorg face but a crappy personality too.

    • Chatcat says:

Sorry, I know that wasn’t ScarJo…I just don’t like Scar Jo as much as I dislike Hathaway…oh and Biel, can’t forget I don’t like her either. The three of them together bore me to tears. I do like Seyfried…I think she is sassy!

  3. The seam at the waist/hips makes her look wide on bottom, the top makes her look strange with the short hair. Love Hugh, always and I am crushing on Amanda lately!

    • Jilli says:

Good god almighty, Hugh Jackman is FINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best wipe the screen of my IPAD as I just drooled all over it! DAYUM!!!!

  4. Riana says:

Super meh dress, it gives her the ugliest silhouette of being both taller and wider.

Hugh Jackman…good God man…handsome doesn’t cover it. That smile could melt butter.

  5. marie says:

love Hugh Jackman (he looks like he wet his pants in one of those pics)

I don’t really like how Anne’s hair is styled, it’s not bad I just don’t like it.. and I dislike both dresses, Amanda looks like she forgot her pants.

    • Chicagogurl17 says:

Everything you said Marie! Anne’s dress makes her look like she’s all hips that drapery fabric from the waist down is too bulky. Amanda is beginning to be too old for this look.

    • balehead2012 says:

“love Hugh Jackman (he looks like he wet his pants in one of those pics)”
LOL! He really does, now that you mention it 🙂

    • Esmom says:

Yes, unfortunate shadow action on Hugh’s pants in that one shot. Ick.

I like Anne’s hair better now that it’s a tiny bit longer but that dress is not flattering.

  6. Reece says:

It makes her look long but not in a good way. The material looks heavy.
I’d like Amanda’s dress more if it were longer and no booties.

  7. Jen says:

I’m not sure why, but I’ve never liked Anne. She seems very fake to me. I do think her hair looks much better since it has grown out some though.

    • KellyinSeattle says:

Yes, it looks better when she covers her hair a bit..
Amanda reminds me of my son’s high school dates. No hoof shoes, sigh. I keep pushing for that and it isn’t happening.

    • Beechie says:

I am glad I am not the only one that feels this way! I think she tries too hard.

    • CG says:

I agree, she just seems so try-hard. She first turned me off when she hosted the Oscars (yes, I realize she was trying to overcompensate for James Franco, but she was *really* annoying all night!). And now she’s already nonstop campaigning for an Oscar, and there’s still three months left before the show? Ugh. (I feel the same way about Ben Affleck too, though.) But I’ll say something nice: I agree with you, her hair is looking better these days.

    • emmie_a says:

I’m with you about not liking Anne. This hairstyle is working for her – I think because the bangs cover part of her face.

Amanda is such a pretty girl but that dress is not doing her any favors. The material looks incredibly cheap – especially because you can see that the material is only printed on only one side and is white underneath. icky bad.

  8. Liane says:

I’m sure the ladies look lovely, but I just can’t take my eyes off of Hugh. *sigh*

  9. Ann says:

Don’t care for Anne’s dress, it’s pretty dull. She needs some earrings or something to jazz it up, especially with that short hair cut.

Amanda’s is really unattractive. The pattern looks like it belongs on a vinyl tablecloth. Looks especially bad with the black pantyhose. She really needs a good stylist.

Hugh looks great, as always. Love him.

I can’t wait to see this movie. Think I’ll fire up the soundtrack to start getting in the mood.

  10. Samigirl says:

I dislike the dress, but I REALLY love the length of her hair!

  11. Apples says:

Anne’s dress: I really don’t like this dress her stylist chose.
There is a weird disconnect between those two different sized straps. I think the attempt is to have a balance of scale and have them interact in some kind of architectural structure. Not successful. Fail. REALLY curious to see who designer is.

  12. Amory says:

I like the dress but it looks like it doesn’t fit her very well. If it had a better fit, I think it would be pretty cool.

And I don’t know why people are hating on her hair. She cut it for the movie, and I admire that she’s owning it instead of wearing those nasty, nasty extensions.

Having said that, I am not a fan. She seems a bit distant and I don’t care for the fact that she once spoke of admiring the ideas in Ayn Rand books(that poor people deserve it and rich people deserve to be rich).

  13. QQ says:

Her hair is SO making me want to take scissors to mine again, is pretty damned chic

    • judyjudy says:

      Go for it, QQ!

My bestie rocks a cut like Anne’s. I love it. My face is too square to pull it off.

  14. judyjudy says:

She looks like my gay brother.

  15. cynicalsmirk says:

I don’t hate the bodice of Anne’s dress, but the skirt is doing her no favours.

Amanda looks like she’s dressed for work at some cheap dress store in the mall, not at a major movie premiere…I have a vision of her clomping around and straightening up the 2-for-$20 sweater table.

  16. aston martin says:

Maybe I’m blind, but I looooove Anne’s dress. It’s so elegant and edgy and couture. +1 on Amanda’s dress, like her stylist lost her luggage and had to make an emergency run to Charlotte Russe.

Anne IS a try-hard, and it bugs me. I loved her in Rachel Getting Married, though-totally bought in.

Hugh. Sigh. He confuses me sexually. One minute he is kissing Nicole Kidman in front of a fire and my knees are buckling even though I’m sitting down; the next he’s Broadway show-tuning on the Oscar stage, and while I know that should be an indication of the range of his talent, I just sit there confused.

  17. Sweet Dee says:

I wish these Les Mis posts were more about Amanda Seyfried and less about Anne Hathaway. Amanda’s beautiful and sweet with a heart of gold (she helps a lot of people in need when the press is nowhere to be found), and I think Anne is dopey-looking, fake and full of her own baloney. I know, I know, it’s Anne who gets the clicks but ugh.

Also, I second the thoughts on Hugh re: lack of praise for doing a great job because it’s expected of him.

  18. WendyNerd says:

I don’t know what it is, but it seems like over the past year, Anne Hathaway has become a much MUCH better actress. To me she always seemed like a halfway decent actress who had the good fortune to be cast in good movies. “Rachel Getting Married” reeked of a vanity project and it seemed like she played the same character over and over again in films “The ugly duckling turned glamazon who finds out what REALLY MATTERS IN LIFE by the end of the film.” But her Catwoman was fantastic, and I really thought she’d suck in that. And, I have to admit, from what I’ve seen of the upcoming Les Miz flick, she is great as Fantine. So good for her.

    But Darling, please eat something.

  19. katie says:

that dress and the long lines around the neck and chest make her neck look so long, like she should have a bunch of those gold rings around her neck women in african tribes wear.

  20. Marianne says:

I like it from the top up.

  21. Diana says:

Ohhh, I love me some hugh!!! He is gorgeous head to toe. I hate Ann’s dress, It’s just wrong and Amanda does look like she forgot her pants.

  22. aston martin says:

That’s so great about Amanda helping people when no one’s even looking. You’re right– what she wears is secondary. I’ll admit I turn vapid about red carpet/premiere outfits, or photo-ops and whatnot. I need to remind myself these are people, not just “stars”.

  23. j.eyre says:

I second your assessment that we should see Hugh on the red carpet every season (and his wife too).

I love him. I am glad he is talented because it doesn’t make me look so silly for saying he should win every award ever – which is true; even the Nobel and Pulitzer because a man who looks like that who is (allegedly) lovely inside and out and is devoted to his wife, regardless of their relationship just needs to be awarded everything.

Did I mention I love him? Enough to create that ridiculous run-on sentence above. *sigh*

  24. Isla says:

I absolutely LOVE Hathaway’s hair – unfortunately, I cannot pull that kind of cut myself but she happens to look amazingly chic.

I guess I’m in the minority here because I don’t mind the dress one bit – it’s young, unique and not cheap-looking like Seyfried over there – COME ON GIRL, you’re standing next to Jackman and Hathaway – put some effort into your wardrobe.

MAN ALIVE, Hugh is wearing the HELL out of that suit…I mean, just JAW-DROPPINGLY gorgeous.

He and Daniel Craig ALWAYS look stunning in suits – the only two men/male celebrities that I know of that pull it off so effortlessly.

  25. nordicgoddess says:

anne: looks like pea-headed fire-poker with a self-cut hairdo my 4 year old sister did…les miz was filmed a while ago..her hair should’ve grown out by now into a cute bob or something less petrifying..that means she WANTS her hair to look like this!

  26. Abby says:

I like Anne’s hair much better this length, but I hate the dress. My husband walked by and said he liked it though. Weird.

Hugh is awesome. And handsome. I hope he gets some kind of nomination!

  27. holly hobby says:

Looks like Annie is growing out her hair. Could it be that she looks at the gossip sites and read that people didn’t like her hair?

Hugh always looks amazing. I think he can sing that role. Annie I’m not sure. She has a pleasant voice but she cannot out sing Patti Lupone!

  28. Mary says:

It looks like Armani Prive to me.

  29. ladybert62 says:

I like the haircut and hate the dress.

  30. TrustMeOnThis says:

I think it’s lovely and sophisticated.
The other girl looks like a cocktail waitress.

  31. Joanna says:

Hugh is so gahd*mn good-looking!! He can eat crackers in my bed anyway. I will take a him and Brad sandwich, if ya know what i mean

    ; )

  32. Joanna says:

plus, I dont buy the gay rumors about Hugh. Because he’s handsome and younger than his wife (I think) and faithful, he’s gay??

  33. stellalovejoydiver says:

Hugh is also an amazing host. He should host the Oscars, not lame Seth McFarlane.

  34. Jazmin says:

Is it me or is Ann beginning to look like Liza Minnelli?
Amanda is a pretty girl, but she seems to have a thyroid problem–(bulging eyes).

  35. Aiobhan says:

I have been obsessed with Anne’s dress all day. It is Antonio berardi s2013. One of my favorites!!!
