Patrick Stewart & Ian McKellen tweet a Thanksgiving portrait: amazing?

Patrick Stewart Ian McKellen

We’re still Monday morning quarterbacking off various celebrities’ Thanksgiving celebrations, and why not? I love this holiday more than any other. Plus if I were to have popped in at any famous couple’s dinner for dinner, it definitely would have been that of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Look at how adorable they are together and posing with their turkey! Never mind that these two are Brits. They’re totally getting into the spirit of their adopted home country.

Patrick proudly tweeted this photo because he loves documenting he and Ian’s bromantic relationship. I know Patrick got himself hitched to Sunny Ozell only a few months ago, and she probably took this picture. Make no mistake that the real chemistry is between Patrick and Ian. They love each other so very much.

In other Pat & Ian news, they are currently starring on Broadway together in repertory productions of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. I guess they do shows every day of the week, and they alternate days for each play. Reviews are very positive with the Hollywood Reporter describing the plays as “masterfully acted” with the two veteran actors bringing “gravitas, penetrating intelligence and mercurial wit.” Newsday adds that “both actors, neither one immune to the lure of excess showmanship, are terrific — stylish, disciplined, strikingly different.” Gah, I wish I could see these plays. At least we will always have Twitter. Here are some more twitpics of Patrick and Ian taking New York, and I’ve included some Broadway pics in the gallery.

I saw both plays, and in Godot, the entire house went “awwwww” pretty much every time they touched one another. Whether they genuinely love each other or not, this is the greatest marketing ploy.

    • Tania says:

I choose to believe they are BFFs. Ian performed Patrick’s wedding ceremony. I just don’t see that as being a PR stunt. I think they’re friends and genuinely thrilled to be able to work together. Let’s face it, we’ve all worked with less than desirable coworkers. Isn’t it amazing when you actually get to work with people you like?

      • T.fanty says:

I think it’s probably a combo of the two. Last week, I was watching the 1980 John Barton series on acting Shakespeare, and they were both in it (Stewart had hair, that’s how old it is!). They’ve known each other for a lifetime.

    • Sixer says:

I think they genuinely like each other and also that they are definitely working it. Hence the hats in all the pics. I don’t mind that they’re working it. It makes me larf.

      • T.fanty says:

Me either. It did make the crowd a little annoying, but it also really worked for Godot.

      • Sixer says:

It’s the kind of exercise in branding that doesn’t make me a) grit my teeth and b) get out a fresh ball gag. It’s Vaguely Eccentric Brit Luvvies Do NYC. Irresistible.

  2. Jess says:

Oh my… FanFiction is writing itself here…

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

It is indeed–I read A LOT of X-Men First Class fanfics, where Erik and Charles are a couple–I’ve run across more than a few of ones where they were older and still lovers, still best friends despite their differences. So sweet. I love these two—Ian McKellan is a good looking older guy, but my God was he a sexy man in his prime. I saw him in the Scarlet Pimpernel….recognized him instantly. And Patrick Stewart’s voice is divine. But if I had to choose, I would jump on Patrick Stewart, since (unfortunately) I am not a male 🙁

  3. mk says:

Lovers, all. Sometimes I can’t wait to be old and truly have fun.

I don’t think I will ever understand the concepts of Brits celebrating American Thanksgiving. While the sentiment of giving thanks is great (and is intended to celebrate a bountiful harvest… anywhere), in the US the holiday basically marks the successful exodus of people FROM Britain.

    Fanty?

    • L says:

I think Patrick Stewart’s wife is American. So maybe it’s a family tradition?

    • T.fanty says:

The entire country shuts down on Thanksgiving day. I suppose you have to do something. And in terms of Americans and independence, the Fourth of July is far more annoying. I always thought Thanksgiving was about recognizing the Native Americans’ niceness in not letting the colonists starve. Which was then repaid by taking their land and giving them syphilis.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Or maybe I was wrong below. Lol

      • LadySlippers says:

Fanty, you forgot the other ‘gifts’ we gave the Indians/Natives like alcoholism & diabetes. And my favourite, near eradification. If your gonna name one you gotta name them all.

      • bluhare says:

LOL, t.fanty!! That’s exactly it. Nothing else to do. I have volunteered to work for people who would rather be with their families, and decorated my Christmas tree one Thanksgiving, but a I didn’grow up with it it doesn’t mean anything to me either.

        PS Totally agree about 7/4.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

When in Rome? Why not? I imagine the British are over our exodus by now.

      • T.fanty says:

Yeah, we’ve made our peace with it. Mostly after realizing you get the Kardashians.

Plus, Thanksgiving dinner is *really* yummy.

      • Sixer says:

I’ve always thought I’d rather we could find a way of importing Thanksgiving in preference to Halloween. Better food. I hate Halloween with a vengeance. Whatever was wrong with burning Catholic boogeymen on Bonfire Night?! Joke, by the way. Not anti-religious. I might even take the Kardashians if I could get rid of Halloween. I could avoid them more easily.

      • Anna says:

“Mostly after realizing you get the Kardashians.”

Here’s some aloe vera, bc that was a BURN!

      • Anna says:

        Sixer –

Youths in Russia do Halloween now. >.< No. Just…no.

      • lenje says:

Ahem, @fanty, you are aware that you spell “realize” with “z”? I suppose it does show you’ve made peace with that 😉

      • Sixer says:

Oh, I shudder with you, Anna. I’m fine with there being some kind of fire festival to mark the advent of winter. But US-style Halloween Just Is Not It.

FWIW – I don’t think any Brits actually IN Britland celebrate Thanksgiving. I don’t know anyone, anyway.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        Thanks, T.fanty. Sort of.

Sixer. I loathe Halloween. Orange and black. Fake “spooky” stuff. Bad costumes. Hot parties, as in temperature. Bad food dyed ugly colors. Running out of candy or heaps of leftover candy. Running out of patience, hiding in dark, pretending not to be home. Hate it.

      • T.fanty says:

I don’t like what Halloween has become, but I don’t begrudge my kids the holiday.

We need to find a way to import Bonfire Night. Who doesn’t want to celebrate the defeat of terrorism by burning the effigy of a man and blowing up little gunpowder missiles?

      • Sixer says:

        Thomas Hardy:

“To light a fire is the instinctive and resistant act of man when, at the winter ingress, the curfew is sounded throughout Nature. It indicates a spontaneous, Promethean rebelliousness against the fiat that this recurrent season shall bring foul times, cold darkness, misery and death”.

I suppose Bonfire Night was, as most festivals, co-opted for propaganda from old pagan markings of seasons and whathaveyous. So we don’t need Halloween AND Bonfire Night. I suppose neither is better really: one a hideous demonstration of disposable consumerism, the other a ritual burning of the boogeyman du jour. I suppose I just prefer baked potatoes to sweets and am enough of a Brit to dislike people I don’t know knocking on the front door of my home/castle. Even if they are children.

Now I type it out, I fear that I probably suck like Victor Meldrew.

      • T.fanty says:

I believe (and I could be mistaken), that the bonfire thing is actually a pagan Scottish tradition.

And now we teach our children to knock at the doors of strangers and eat whatever sweets are given.

  5. blue marie says:

Love the photos, they are adorable together.

  6. LadyMTL says:

Oh maaaan, what I would have given to have been there…hanging out with two of the coolest old men in the entire world. Sigh. Lucky turkey.

  7. Vee says:

Cuteness overload! These two are so charming!

  8. Norman Bates' Mother says:

How can you not love them? In my perfect dream life they are my crazy uncles ( crazy as in Emma Thompson crazy – in a most flattering and entertaining way possible). People snark at Sunny Ozell for marrying a guy so much older than her but she gets to regularly spend time with those two together, and that’s a win. When I think that women have consciously decided to be with guys like Chris Brown, Sean Penn, Shia LaBeouf or Ethan Hawke, I think I’d rather marry Patrick Stewart, even though he could be my grandfather.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

What a fun dream life! I love it

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Not if I get to him first 😉
But if you throw Liam Neeson in my way to distract me, then you’d definitely win that one–Liam is my forever dong. I swear one of these days I’m going to Ireland to find his doppelanger (in every way)…..

  9. Mew says:

The level of awesomeness is mind blowing!

  10. lenje says:

I watched Waiting for Godot, and it was one of the best acted play I’ve seen in Broadway (probably tells that I haven’t seen much, but then I’ve lived in NY for only 2 years). It was engaging and funny — and I can tell both Sir Ian and Sir Patrick are having fun with it. Billy Crudup was very good too.

  11. turningviolet says:

I’ll bet that was an epic Thanksgiving dinner – they’d be the embarrassing oldies getting drunk and behaving inappropriately. Wildly good fun.

  12. jessiebes says:

Aww, cuteness! How refreshing to have a nice story like this once in a while.

  13. Adrien says:

Looks like St. Patrick’s day than Thanksgiving.

  14. nicegirl says:

Thank you for these pics! What a great pick me up! xoxoxox

  15. Reece says:

This makes me so happy! I think I might sit here today. I don’t wanna go in the other posts. 🙂

  16. Jess says:

    They are the cutest!

  17. bluhare says:

I think they should have a contest or put themselves on eBay for charity. Spend a day with Sir Pat and Ian! Go drinking in pubs! Pose with statues! Hang backstage with Patrick’s wife who will dish on them! I’d donate to charity and enter that contest a zillion times.

  18. Thiajoka says:

These pics were so adorable that they made my Thanksgiving when I first saw them on another site. I’m with Ian–I like the dark ale.

  19. Bubbles says:

I will forever be disappointed with Harold Pinter.

  20. Mary says:

long may they reign. Love em both.

  21. Diana says:

    THIS IS SO CUTE
