Lena Dunham in chrome yellow Zac Posen at the Globes: flattering or fug?

FFN_KM_GG_Arr_011214_51303333

Lena Dunham came to the Golden Globes red carpet early, but even before I had seen all of the clothes, I knew that Lena would be making my “worst of” list. Personally, I don’t think Zac Posen is as great of a designer as everyone else seems to think. Zac makes fancier pageant gowns that usually make really slender women look bulgy, so you can imagine how Lena looked in one of his gowns. No, you don’t have to imagine, because here she is. If the design of the dress wasn’t unflattering enough, Lena got it in “Big Bird Yellow”. Ugh. For the record, I’m not saying that women with Lena’s body type can’t or shouldn’t show off their bodies, or that they should only wear shapeless sacks – I’m just saying, know what flatters your figure. Look at what this does to her bust, and it was just awful in the back. This kind of silhouette does not flatter her figure, and the color does nothing for her either.

Also, I’m pretty pleased that Lena and Girl lost all of their nominated awards, aren’t you? Again, I’m not saying that Lena doesn’t deserve to be the lead of her own show or whatever, it’s just that the show is mostly overhyped and “chic to hate” and there are worthier nominees. As for the other Girls, Allison Williams (the self-appointed Fashion Girl) wore one of the most boring and insipid Alexander McQueen gowns I’ve ever seen from the McQueen line, and Zosia Mamet wore an absolutely gorgeous Reema Acra. Zosia’s Reem Acra was one of my personal favorites on the red carpet – it photographed beautifully!

Lena-go up a size & eliminate the wrinkly bulges.

    • Evi says:

But most of these dresses are provided for free by designers.
Maybe she had no choice and didn’t want to shell out for a gown herself. If the latter is true, then we can expect more fugly gowns.

      • Marigold says:

        It’s called a tailor.

        Or, pick another designer.

Or, you’re incredibly wealthy. Buck up and buy.

      • Dani says:

omg shell out for a dress? You do know she makes a lot more money than most of us combined, right? and that she comes from more money than most of us do? Trust me she can afford a dress.

      • lunchcoma says:

She’s not some third tier TV star’s wife whose choices are to wear this or buy her own gown. She’s wealthy in her own right and important enough to attract the attention of designers like Posen and Prada. Granted, I think she runs into the problem of none of them knowing what to do with her body type, but she can solve that by hiring someone to give appropriate notes.

      • emmie_a says:

Even if the dress is provided by the designer for free, the dress can still be altered. But that’s not the problem with Lena’s dress. It’s just not the right silhouette for her. I don’t know if it’s a posture thing but she always looks dumpy. And her arm tattoo makes her look cheap.

      • Holly says:

But Zac P is her buddy buddy (childhood friend I think?), and he’s made many of her dresses, I don’t think it comes down to anything being free or sent over. I actually like Zac on Project Runway, but since the judges regularly kick people off when the challenge is to co-design a dress with a celeb or person because “it’s not flattering,” Zac needs to kick himself off of the show!

      • Coco says:

She can take some of the money she saved on this dress and go see a dentist. Her yellow stained teeth match her dress.

      • Kate says:

Octavia Spencer is a full figured woman and she looked wonderful on the red carpet.

    • MollyB says:

And STAND UP STRAIGHT! I swear, half of of her frumpiness would be cured if she bothered to stand like an adult and not a sullen adolescent.

    • Janna says:

Those ugly tattoos did nothing in making her look better. When I look at her in something like this, the tatts are all I see. Looks like Girls got shut out this go around.

      • ncmagnolia says:

I know….looks like someone threw up licorice all over her back. This girl and her fashion choices (and let’s be honest, her ridiculously bad show) will unfortunately always be fug. No matter who the designer, her inner hipster anti-chic always comes out. I just can’t with this mouth breather

    • lady mary. says:

her dress and style here reminds me of what Bridget Jones wore in the bridget jones diary part 2 when she goes to a ball with Mr Darcy in a mustard ,ill fitting dress with ghasty makeup

      • Coco says:

This! I was trying to place it. Hmmm where have I seen this before. When Bridget had to get up the staircase so funny.

    • Brittaki says:

I don’t like any of those dresses. They all remind me of something you’d see at Wet Seal during prom season.

    • jaye says:

In that shot from behind I can see her “suck it in” garment. I like her hair.

  2. Snowpea says:

That particular shade of yellow should only be worn by women of colour; Indians, African Americans, South Pacific Islander women. It makes their skin look absolutely gorgeous.

White women who wear it always look jaundiced and unwell.

    • SnarkGirl says:

Agreed! On darker skinned women this colour looks amazing, but not on a pale white girl.

The fit is awful too – it squashes her boobs which makes her look too
hip -y. She needs a better colour, lighter fabric, and a bigger size!

    • LadyMTL says:

ITA. I’m Middle Eastern but quite pale and I would never, ever wear this shade of yellow. Aside from that, the fit is awful too. Like SnarkGirl said, it’s too small across the chest and hips. Total fail, IMHO.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Completely agree. It’s an impossible color on most light skinned people. And a nightmare on Lena for many reasons. Unfortunate.

    • Jess says:

      This!

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

You called it-Long live our fashion critic! Although I must admit to liking that canary yellow gown that Michelle Williams was lambasted for wearing a few years back. It wasn’t a spectacular color on her, but with the bright lips, pale skin, blonde hair, and her overall quirky look, I kinda liked the overall affect.

      • Bridgett says:

You mean Michelle Williams’ marigold Vera Wang that is widely considered one of the best Oscar gowns ever?

      • ncmagnolia says:

Yup. That was pretty darned stunning. Also loved Nicole Kidman’s yellow, embroidered Oscar gown when she was still marrried to the Xenu Level VIII $cientology idiot.

      • Ktx says:

Yeah, Michelle wasn’t lambasted. She looked gorgeous in that dress with her blonde hair and her bright lips. She looked beautiful- pale skin and all- like an exotic bird. Such a memorable look.

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

She totally looked pretty but she got ragged on for being a pale-y in a super bright yellow dress. I guess most of the “fashion” folk make their living by coming up with nasty things to say about people nowadays.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I swear that Lena Dunham goes out of her way to look unattractive. Her body-type is typical of that of a great many American women but few of us would choose to wear a loud “look at me” color, in a shape that shows off all of our flaws while crushing our assets. And the panel over her tummy looks sweat-soaked.

      • Chrissy says:

I agree, IMO she purposely dresses in unflattering clothing to get attention. Like she’s saying, “Hey everyone, I look like crap but I’m still successful.” Kinda weird. I hate the fit if the dress and especially the colour. I know it would make me look like crap.

      • jaye says:

She either doesn’t have a stylist or her stylist hates her. She never gets it right for red carpet events.

    • Dreamyk says:

I have yet to see a dress in that yellow color favor someone with fair skin. It’s just a dreadful color on the fair skinned and it seems like it’s everywhere. WHY?

    • loveisthecoal says:

100% agree. Gorgeous color, but makes pale girls look washed out and ill.

    • alexandra says:

Michelle Williams wore yellow when she came out with heath ledger, and she looked amazing

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

It was more mustard–but she looked like a goddess. And she’d just had her baby too.

  3. Eileen says:

I don’t think I know enough adjectives to describe how hideous that yellow gown looks on Lena Dunham! Did she even look in the mirror? Did her assistant, the designer, the sales person give her any guidance? The black and white gown in the last photo is just beautiful but the hair, makeup, lack of lip color and the actresses’s expression makes it look like she is attending a funeral. Must have been super nervous (understandably so)

  4. Lindy79 says:

    Fuggity Fuggy Fug-Fug

At least she seemed like she could walk this year.

  5. AtiaoftheJulii says:

I think what I don’t like about it, it’s too small for her. If it was fitted right, then we can all say, that’s a horrible color on her but now she looks as if she’s trying to get into Vogue.

There were some terrible dresses last night. What are these designers thinking?

  6. Mimz says:

She also has an odd figure to dress, but sometimes i think she’s torn between trying to fit in “fashion wise” with the other starlets, but shocking everyone with her “i dont care” attitude, and this happens.
A supposedly sexy dress, strapless and by Zac Posen, that is all kinds of WRONG.

Allison must just chill with her whole “im so pretty it hurts” attitude
And Zosia is gorgeous. Just saw her on TV. I also really like her character on Girls.

SN: i enjoy their show, i think all the nudity is a bit much but i really like it!!

    • Spooks says:

Zosia looked great. And I’m so glad she cut her hair. Personally, I think she’s the strongest actress out of the four.

    • JojoAnn says:

I agree, her shape is just odd. She has the thick tummy without the advantage of nice cleavage. So a designers instinct is to shift the eye from the top half. But then her legs are also quite short and she is super awkward on heels, so a conservative top half with a high slit is out. I think, her stylists figure that she may aswell just go with whatever she loves. Which really isnt a bad philosophy if you think about it.

      • Gauchita says:

That’s my kind of body too, chubby without the big boobs. What I do is a dark color from the waist down and for the upper portion I use the small boobs to my advantage; using a boat-like shape, or deep decolletage, or anything that a bustier woman couldn’t use cause it’s too revealing. BTW, the 2 house tattoo is incredibly beautyful, but it’s getting washed up -all tattoos need retouching after a few years- among the bright yellow. I love Girls, but I hate the way Lena carries herself, and that f*cking tongue, what are you, four?!?! How can somebody be so smart and professional and childlike at the same time? Now that I think about it, Drew does the same. They are powerfull women, why try to be child-like cute?!

  7. allons-y alonso says:

God, that dress hideous in every way. Also, Girls is the most overrated P.O.S television series I’ve ever polluted my eyes with.

    • blue marie says:

+ 1.. I gave Girls a shot and will never get that 30 minutes back.. the dress may not have been so bad had it been a size or two larger? I dunno, the top is so ill fitted that can’t be comfortable.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

May I borrow the phrase “Most overrated POS that I’ve ever polluted my eyes with” for use in my daily life? Thank you.

    • Juliette says:

I am so glad you said that!! I really tried to watch Girls because everyone was talking about it but I just can’t like it. I found it terribly boring and unwatcheable. This is nothing against Lena, Alison or the rest of the cast. It’s just the show is utter cr*p.

I feel the same way about Brooklyn Nine Nine. I’m flabbergasted that it won awards last night. I might be in the minority here but I find it so bad, especially when you add in the stupid laugh track.

      • Anners says:

I thought it was just me…can’t stand either of these shows and don’t get the appeal. Glad to know I’m not alone 🙂

    • Holly says:

Watched the first 2 eps that premiered last night and this show is exactly 1 idea now rolling into its third season; and zero character development whatsoever.

The best part though: The credits roll and Lena didn’t even write the episode – Bwahahahaha!!! It’s hilarious given her latest interview about how she has to force her genius… and there’s all of like, what, 4 or 5 hours of the show per year?

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

That’s what I’ve heard about the show–and that’s why I won’t watch it. All I hear about it is that they’re young women with first world problems (to borrow a phrase)–which isn’t bad in itself–but it’s the fact that they’re whiny and they don’t grow up whatsoever. No character development…..it’s like those Diary of a Wimpy kid movies (which I watch with my younger sibling who LOVES it). The main character is a jerk–hasn’t changed from that at all. Which is really annoying.

    • Aggie says:

Didn’t like it from the get go. Now New York hipsters are starting to hate it, That can’t be good when your own don’t like how you portray them.

    • Nina W says:

I watched one episode to check it out and Lena was running around in a fishnet tank top with no bra or camisole and it eventually came off entirely. There was no explanation for her nudity and it was distracting and annoying. I have no problem with breasts, I watch HBO and virtually everything they make has the gratuitous naked breasts so it’s not the nudity that annoyed me but the fact that it was just thrown in there for no reason at all. It was stupid. I also didn’t enjoy the rest of the show, none of the characters were likable or interesting, I didn’t find it innovative at all. just irritating. Maybe I’m too old to “get” it but I think it’s as you said, an over-rated POS that I polluted my eyes with.

  8. GiGi says:

I really liked Zosia’s dress – she usually is a miss for me.

Ok. Lena…. so bad. My 10 year old said she looked like Ursula from the Little Mermaid. I’m guessing that’s not the look she was going for. I think in a different color with a better fit, it could’ve been lovely. But this is the style dress you put on a rail thin woman to make her look curvy… it’s probably not the most flattering for Lena’s body type.

    • Latisse says:

OMG she DOES look like ursula from the little mermaid. I feel awful thinking it, but she does!!!

    • Florc says:

Lena could have pulled off this dress. Sort of.
Bad fabric, bad fit, bad color. Curvy women can pull off the strapless mermaid/trumpet style. It’s not ideal, but it’s not impossible.
With that said, I think Lena wants to shock or grab the attention good or bad. That’s why she wore this color. A deep jewel tone on the same dress would have improved it drastically.
Your 10 year old sounds very sharp GiGi!

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Yes she does–that was my first thought when I saw the back of her. Lena is not *that* big–it’s just that she’s so little. How hard would it be to get a properly fitted gown. OR if she doesn’t want to be girly–wear a suit a la Jodie Foster.

And I hate her tattoos….they look horrible. One of my cousins has a girlfriend who is about the same size as Lena–she has tattoos all over her arms and chest—it’s gross.

      • Nina W says:

She could pull off strapless because she can wear a solid foundation garment and has a smaller chest. Women of her body type with a more generous blessing up top should steer clear of strapless. Strapless gowns just don’t give the right support for bigger busted women. Just my opinion, of course. For Lena though, this dress is wrong in many ways; color and fit are off but, even if properly tailored and in a nice jewel tone or something, it makes her look bottom-heavy. Too much fabric, Too much mermaid tail.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Actually, I fear that this WAS the look she was going for. Time and time again, she manages to parade herself around in the most ill-fitting, outrageous looking get-ups, all of which seem engineered to show off her tattoos while making her body look awful.

    • jaye says:

Out of the mouths of babes. Give your 10yo a bump in allowance.

  9. agentscully says:

It would help if she didn’t slouch. Shoulders back, Lena! So always looks so frumpy and I think it has a lot to do with her posture.

    • pp says:

Co-sign… That and the homie tats, girl could wear whatever she’d still look like a truck stop barmaid.

      • aquarius64 says:

Agree with the tats. You don’t need to show them all the time. Even if you have a tone figure, showing tattoos while in an evening gown looks tacky.

      • Tania says:

Agreed. The tats are hideous and look like someone barfed ink onto her. Her dress was awful and at this point I truly think she is dressing poorly to shock and awe. She isn’t obese, I’m sure there must be something they could have found for her that would have looked better than what she went with. She just ends up looking frumpy, dumpy and trashy.

  10. Greata says:

For a smart woman Lena seems to lack total self awareness when it comes to what suits her body type.

  11. QQ says:

I must be crazy, but this is Lena Dunham, this entire look is a complete win for her! It is the first time i see A SHAPE to her!

    • Kiddo says:

I hate the color, but I hate that color in general. Otherwise, I think the style and shape of the dress looks fabulous on her.

The white dress with the flower pattern is divine. It’s flattering and artistic at the same time. Like my mother has often said, “less is more” sometimes.

    • Amy Tennant says:

It’s actually my favorite thing I’ve seen her wear, except it makes me hurt in the upper sideboob area where it looks like it pinches. I think it doesn’t fit right, or maybe that’s just the picture. I’m not saying I love the dress, but I think it’s a step in the right direction. A different color maybe (but I think the sunshiney yellow is fine), and better tailoring, and there you go.

    • Inky says:

So glad you said this, I totally agree. I think she looks amazing.

    • Nina W says:

I don’t get how this is a win? Because it’s marginally less disgusting than her previous appearances or because this is all part of her IDGAF schtick? Either way it’s a fail to me. I’m not impressed with her choices and I’m not impressed with her anti-HW fakeness.

  12. Hannah says:

I think Lena should try a strapless, corsetted A-line gown. That could be flattering.
I rather like Allison’s dress. It’s elegant, understated and not cutesy for once.

    • Jess says:

Yes. An A-line gown in a flattering colour would do wonders for her. Maybe navy blue, turquoise, hot pink, even a dark red… And then she could mix it up with some interesting make up.
But who the hell told her that yellow was an appropriate colour on her? It’s not. In fact very few caucasian woman can wear yellow without looking sickly and ill.

    • Amy Tennant says:

I wish she wouldn’t do strapless if she’s not going to stand up straight. Correction: I wish she would stand up straight. I involuntarily correct my posture whenever I see her. (I’m sure I must slump all the time too; I just don’t have hundreds of people taking my picture).

      • Nina W says:

You wouldn’t be slouching on the red carpet though would you? Especially if it’s part of your job. I know I wouldn’t.

  13. Not says:

Lena’s best dressed moment, since she graces the entertainment box

  14. Adrien says:

    Lena has “grad/prom/yearbook portrait” makeup.

  15. Florc says:

Allison’s dress looks.. weird. The top has a texture that looks odd, no?

That gorgeous black and white dress! It’s like the flowers are still growing.

  16. Faye says:

That dress – I have no words. None printable in a public forum, anyway.

Can we have a post about Lena’s little tantrum at that reporter who dared to question her last week (assuming there wasn’t one already and I missed it)? I have thoughts on that. She’s clearly started to believe all her fawning press, and it is not attractive.

    • nicegirl says:

I have thoughts and questions on that outburst as well.

    • littlestar says:

I didn’t hear about that! Where did you read about it?

      • pamspam says:

        Here ya go http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2536961/Lena-Dunham-puts-reporter-place-complains-nudity-Girls.html

I’m glad you brought this up because I think her look for this panel interview was maybe the cutest I’ve ever seen on her.

      • Faye says:

I think it was also on people. If you google it, it was reported in its entirety. It started off with her losing it when a reporter asked her (in a way that I thought was not offensive) why there’s so much nudity in her show. Then it devolves into her telling the reporter he obviously has a problem with her (which, huh?) and that he needs “professional help” for that.

Of course, Judd Apatow jumps in to say how sexist and unfair that question was. Because Lena is a huge feminist icon, and nothing proclaims that like having your male sponsor attack someone for you!

      • littlestar says:

Thanks pam! What really struck me about the article was the accompanying pictures! Lena looks so put together and well dressed in those photos! Really beginning to think she is trolling us all.

  17. malina says:

I, for one, think she looks jolly and carefree. She might be indeed showing the ‘i don’t care’ attitude, and… I like it. Tired of people telling women to wear only what flatters them, makes them look thiner, their legs longer etc. Perhaps she just enjoys wearing it for herself. I’ve seen dozens of women at wedding parties sporting similarly ‘unflattering’ looks. I think it’s refreshing that there is one ‘up there’. I say let people enjoy themselves.

    • cr says:

Wonder how jolly and carefree she was at the end of the night, with her boobs being smooshed like that.

    • Faye says:

My problem with Lena is that she’s not just live and let live. She’s not just being “jolly and carefree.” She doesn’t want to do the work required to meet society’s traditional definition of “attractiveness,” which, fine – it’s a free country. But she feels entitled to attack anyone who doesn’t laud her and kiss her butt and tell her she’s the greatest thing ever. Just look at her press conference last week. A reporter asked a perfectly reasonable question about why there is so much nudity in her show – in other words, what point is she trying to make? And she totally went off on him and told him that if he doesn’t like her, he needs professional help for that. Really?

You say you’re tired of people telling others to wear only what flatters them. Well, as one of the masses who has to see her at all these awards shows, I’m tired of her wearing things that obviously don’t fit her just so she can troll us, and then her criticizing society if we don’t tell her how wonderful she looked. If she can dress how she wants, we can comment on how it looks to us.

    • Nina W says:

“Jolly & carefree” do not leap to mind for me with this one. She seems to want to portray herself as an important voice for her generation, nothing jolly or carefree in any of that. She also shoots her mouth off quite a bit and seems very touchy. I think her “I Don’t Care” attitude is a projection of her insecurity and she cares VERY much.

  18. Deb says:

Can’t stand anyone or anything associated with that hideous show, most of all Lena Dunham. Just no

  19. Evi says:

I’m just going to say it. The way these dresses are designed, one needs to have a certain body type to do them justice, and by that I don’t mean someone needs to be skeletal, but to be reasonably fit and proportional. Yes it is irritating that these gowns are quite narrow in the type of bodies they suit [i.e. it’s difficult to look comfortable if one is overweight], but that is how it is.
Lena Dunham is neither proportional or fit. She always tries to squeeze herself in a dress that is way too small – like Kelly Osbourne [who had a zipper malfunction] – and she thinks it will look good because it will hold her in. And many other women think that way [i.e. Spanx clientele], but they are all wrong and should get a friend to take a candid/unexpected photo of them to see how uncomfortable they look.
But in saying that, I don’t know which is more hideous. Her dress or her body type [totally wrong for that dress] or her hideous tattoos.
What on earth does she have tattooed on her back?
To see her pose is laughable. I’d imagine that for someone with her income, she’d easily hire a designer to make a haute couture gown to her personal measurements.

  20. lucy2 says:

Except for Zosia, all the Girls girls looked pretty bad.
Lena’s dress is too tight, too bright, and those lines are not good on her. Plus I think her big tattoo on her arm always throws off an elegant look when she wears something sleeveless.

  21. We Are All Made of Stars says:

Okay, horrifying, but I see the effort, so here goes. 1. Go up a size. Holding your breath and smushing yourself into a dress that is too small for your upper body creates back fat and actually makes your boobs look smaller if they are porportionally small on your frame, or just not big enough to generate that “cups runneth over” effect. 2. Try a less heavy fabric, particularly when going after mermaid volume. If you are stickly, you can get away with being swathed in boatloads of fabric. If you bring the volume naturally, don’t add more to your figure. Let your figure do the talking. 3.Guitar-shaped figures are actually quite nice to look at and actually are considered the most desirable figures in many parts of the world. With that said, they tend to look best when color or volume is used on the upper half to provide a little bit of visual balance, or when the smallness of the waist is emphasized. Okay Lena, get ’em next time!

Zebra dress girl looks great and very statuesque, bottom girl looks okay in an understated JCrew kinda way, not my taste personally.

  22. Marianne says:

Although the yellow dress isn’t anything really special (I’m pretty sure we have all seen that design time and time again), I’m glad she chose something more form fitting. And that she stepped out of her comfort zone. She usually picks really long sleeved shapeless dresses. I think it looks good on her.

  23. Livan says:

I do not get the “hate” on Girls! I LOVE it 🙂 I am so looking forward to the new season and thinking about watching the old ones again! The characters sure are bitchy, smug, selfish etc etc and that is great too 😉 In the show Lena hardly ever wears anything flattering but i don’t mind!

  24. Lempicka says:

i dont like any of the dresses, the flower dress looks so shopping mall to me!
Is it just me or is Alyson looking really skinny these days?!

  25. Tig says:

I am about to join the “she does this on purpose” school of thought. No one with a mirror could think this is flattering. However, while I can buy her attitude of “too cool to care about that'”-what are the designers thinking? Does Zac Posen et al not care when one of his designs looks so awful? Wish she would give Christian S a call- he dressed Christina H last year at an event- her figure challenges are on a level with Lena’s, and she looked amazing. But that would be assuming she wants to look good.

    • Nina W says:

IF she were “too cool to care about that”, why even bother turning up, let alone in a designer gown? She cares, very much, just like every other screwball in HW.

Zosia is wearing my wedding dress! That’s weird. Lena looks awful, but I actually don’t mind the fit.

  27. Amanda_M87 says:

Lena always seems to look frumpy even when she’s dressed to the nines.

  28. Ag says:

I do not understand the way this woman dresses. The fit is terrible. The color is horrific on someone with her skin tone (I’m also super-pale and look like I have serious jaundice in this shade if yellow). She has money and could afford a stylist. I don’t get it.

  29. Zbornak Syndrome says:

I think Lena’s dress emphasizes her small waist at least. I love a good healthy, sexy pear shape! This is coming from a non fan.

But her gown is TIGHT! I never knew you could have camel toe in a mermaid gown.

  30. didilucy says:

Who dresses this woman? I can’t even find one good word about this look. She should dress her body type and wearing yellow just screams “look at me” Either she has more self confidence than anyone else on the planet or she craves the attention.

  31. Nene says:

This look has 3 major flaws:
Firstly, as a full-bodied pear shaped woman this dress is a huge NO NO on Lena. The fact is the bigger pears are the rounder their shoulders get. Hence Lena should have opted for a cap-sleeved or cup-sleeved gown(to add a little width and balance out her hips) with a v-neck. It would have been more flattering.
Secondly, canary yellow or bold colors or rather warm colors like reds, yellow, gold, purples and pink look best on dark skin tones and olive skin tones.
Imagine Lupita or Eva Mendes in this shade of yellow.Stunning.
Cool colors would look great on Lena since she is fair and it seems she wanted a bold color for this event, voilet, cobalt blue or bright green would have done the job.
Lastly, no matter one’s weight, always wear the right size. A size up would have been a far better fit on her.

  32. OhDear says:

I don’t think she looks *that* bad, though perhaps she’s lowered my expectations so much with previous getups. The bodice on that dress is terrible, though – it looks like Posen added boob flaps as an afterthought.

  33. mom2two says:

I loved Lena’s hair and makeup. That dress was not flattering on her, I can’t think of too many people it would be flattering on. As someone said upthread, she did go out of her comfort zone here and I give her credit for it.
    I love Zosia Mamet’s dress.

  34. LonnieTinks says:

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I really like her dress. I think it is really figure flattering and the color makes it modern; I was pleasantly surprised. She looks very hipster glam and I love that she is so unique, smart and funny.

    • cr says:

To me it doesn’t flatter her figure. It gives you awareness that she has hips, waist and boobs, but doesn’t flatter them at all.
And didn’t Zac used to babysit Lena when she was in middle school or something? You’d think he’d dress her better.

  35. Dani says:

I think she purposely dresses poorly to get a reaction out of people. Any attention is good attention, apparently. For someone who’s so pro love your natural shape, she sure is trying to fool herself thinking she can fit into a runway gown. NOT BODY SHAMING but if you know you can’t fit into a 4 why try? Why not get something that flatters you and makes you look beautiful? Just so over her and her pretentious IDGAF attitude.

  36. danielle says:

I guess I’m way in the minority, I thought she looked nice, dress made her look good curvy and emphasized her waist.

  37. emmie_a says:

Allison is a fashion girl wanna be — but Zasia is the true fashion girl. She always looks great. Allison might look good in clothes but you can tell that Zasia has actual *style*!

  38. chaine says:

i don’t understand why, with her money, she can’t get a custom-made gown that would flatter her figure. if she hooked up with the right designer, she could not only look better, but probably launch and market a clothing line that lots of normal-shaped women would want to buy.

  39. RobN says:

I have to believe that she dresses like crap on purpose. There is no other explanation. Any normal woman would try that on in a dressing room and laugh their asses off at how awful it was. She can not be that deluded.

    • marina says:

I agree. She wants people to criticize her so she can say she doesn’t care about her appearance because she’s an artist.

We get it Lena – because you aren’t very attractive, you go out of your way to wear clothing that makes you look even less attractive so you can own it. You even go nude on TV way too much so you can show everyone how “comfortable” you are in your own skin. Except you aren’t.

Or maybe I just don’t get her. Apparently you can only be intelligent and deep if you’re unattractive.

      • Nina W says:

Nothing about this dress says “artist”, “intelligent” or “deep”. If she is deliberately dressing for criticism, she’s earned it.

  40. JessSaysNo says:

It’s hideous, its WAY too small near her arms and creates arm foldover. The hip area fits nicely but the color is not nice with her skin tone and tattoos. I’ve actually never seen a flattering picture of her. Ever. I don’t find her particularly pretty and I know that is bitchy but she needs to dress better and rethink her hairstyle. I think Melissa McCarthy looked gorgeous– its not about weight. It’s about dressing yourself well.

  41. Bea says:

I thought she wore it as a joke dress. It certainly appeared to be funny.

  42. Denise says:

Zac Posen’s designs are hideous. If you have a discerning eye, you’ll not like what you see. He has not evolved as a designer, and he needs to.

  43. The Original G says:

I’m sick of the body snarking on her. Her shape is perfectly normal. Millions of women look like her.

She dresses like this on purpose. It’s part of her person: part I don’t give a crap about your standards, look how dumb they are and part I’m not playing the Hollywood game your way.

You don’t have to like it . In fact, it works out better for her if you don’t.

    • Nina W says:

BS! I have no problem with her body type but I have a big problem with her giant fake foam finger. In no way is she proving any point to anyone by deliberately dressing badly and attending the GGs. She went because she wanted to win, just like every other nominee there. I am sick of this lame excuse for her, she is playing the HW game big time and I’m not sucker enough to fall for it. She’s not the first fake anti-hero to roll through town, you know?

  44. Potato_Chip says:

Lena looks like an overstuffed canary.
Allison looks like she swallowed half a zebra.

  45. Montréalise says:

Sofia Vergara also wore a Zac Posen gown last night which was similar to Lena’s (except for the color) – but what a difference! See:

    http://hollywoodlife.com/2014/01/12/sofia-vergara-golden-globes-dress-2014-pictures/

Obviously, if you have a classic tall hourglass figure like Sofia’s, it’s a lot easier to dress than a short pear shape like Lena’s, but it can be done. Look at Queen Latifah, Adele, Octavia Spencer, Oprah Winfrey – none of them are a size 6, yet they manage to look fabulous on the red carpet. My guess is that Lena actually thought she looked great and nobody in her entourage had the guts to tell her otherwise.

  46. Pandy says:

I hate the tattoos more than the dress. Just so ugly anytime you are not wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

  47. whocares? says:

    FUG

  48. lisa2 says:

I really like the last two dresses. I don’t know the women and didn’t check for correct names.. 🙁

but the last dress is so beautiful. The girl. Zosia?? just looks so sad wearing it. Like someone forced her in it. The other dress worn by Allison? is simple but I really like it.

I don’t like the first dress on Lena.. I think she would do better with a one shoulder thing. And if her hair was really sleek down maybe and not that non committal thing they went with.

  49. sophie says:

I really don’t get the hate she invokes – I think Lena is as cute as a button

  50. Nina W says:

I thought the arm tattoo was bad but then I saw that thing on her back. This is just my opinion, of course, but if you plan on adding something permanently to your body maybe it should be, interesting or a nice piece of art. As opposed to the, what the heck is that, a broken house? IDK, it’s fug and so is the dress, Big Bird can pull off yellow, Lena not so much. And I agree with everyone that it is ill-fitting and ill-tailored and terrible for her body type. She has a nice figure but you would never know it the way she dresses and slouches.

  51. Sal says:

Definitely fug. I really dislike the mermaid-like gowns.

  52. bailie says:

Oh, the colour of that dress for a big girl is really a terrible choice. Yellow, really.??
    She always looks so bad.
