Benedict Cumberbatch brings Otter Realness to Boston: would you hit it?

OTTER REALNESS.

*dies*

Benedict Cumberbatch is in Boston, y’all. I’m sure all of the Cumberbitches already know that, considering the Boston Cumberbranch released their CumberBat-signal. Instead of an image of a bat, is it an image of an otter?! Anyway, these photos of your Cumberboyfriend are dated June 17th, but I think they were just released yesterday, because very few sites are running them.

Benny is in Boston to film a supporting part in the Whitey Bulger film, starring Scarfy Depp as Bulger. Benedict plays Billy Bulger, Depp’s brother, also known as “The Corrupt Midget.” Cumberbatch was spotted wandering around Boston with his iPod (is his iPod purple?!), listening to some tunes. I have to say… I like him in the navy polo, even with the ‘80s-villain-popped-collar. I don’t mind the chinos either. It’s the bright white sneakers that bug me. And that damn hat. Why does he cover his Cumbercurls?! They are glorious.

The Boston papers are trying to keep tabs on him too – apparently, someone somewhere saw him with a “date” at Sonsie in Boston a few days ago. Maybe it was his new girlfriend? Lady Kinvara Balfour? *drops bomb in Cumberfandom, walks away*

PS… The Imitation Game has been going through some test screenings and word is that Benedict better get #AlltheVelvet ready because he’s going to be nominated for a bunch of awards.

He DOES look like an otter :O How have I never seen it before?

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      He is very otter-like.

Ewwww..Sonsie? Sonsie is so euro….I was gonna say “trash” but let’s just stick with “euro” but not actually cool or hip like anywhere in Europe, just incredibly lame and overrated place where people go to be seen. I would expect more from Cumberbatch.

Maybe he should call me and I’ll show him all the rad spots in the city.

      • Kate2 says:

TOK – do you live here?

I’ve been wanting to ask for a while but how many UK/Europeans are on this board? CB seems to be dominated by the UK (which is great, I happen to love the vocab you all use… ). How many are US?

      • SophieK says:

        US here. 🙂

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

        I’m a Bostonian but I have duel-citizenship–US and France.

I love France and the UK with a passion but I have one big problem–I keep going back to only those two places instead of branching out.
Next year, if I’m financially able to, I REALLY wanna force myself to see other parts of EU and get outside of my comfort zone.

      • StormsMama says:

I just got to see him today in the flesh 5 feet from me. He IS otter-ish but he IS hot. Did not realize he was so easy to look at. And he accent…wow. Yum

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Original Kitten, so true. I said that on the thread the other day. Sonsie is where people go to see and be seen AND the staff calls the Herald, which other restaurants won’t do.

@StormsMama, where did you see him?

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

        European here…. south

  2. Kate2 says:

Wish I could tell where that was. Shots are too close. I know they were in Southie again yesterday though. Problem is, they always shoot while I’m at work so they’re gone by the time I get home. G Street is a less than 10 minute walk from where I live.

  3. Dani says:

    I like his murse.

  4. BooBooLaRue says:

    dopey hat

    • QQ says:

The Much Reviled Nice Guy Fedora

      • Green Eyes says:

And you just know he thinks he’s too cool for school in it! Love the turned up collar on his Izod, too.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Yeah. Hate it.

      • FLORC says:

It’s a nice hat, but it’s rare a person can properly pull it off. BC can only pull off a well tailored suit imo. That may also be because his casual style is awful.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ok, I’ll change it to say ” hate it on him.”

    • Encumbered says:

I think his hat fetish started when he was at Harrow wearing that odd straw hat thing required of those schoolboys….lol

  5. flavia_deluce says:

Benedict wandering around looking SMOKING hot in the same square mile as me = NO work has been completed this week.

    • Snazzy says:

Now that’s just bragging … no, I’m not jealous, not at all ….

      • flavia_deluce says:

Don’t be jealous, it’s TORTURE knowing he’s right there and our meet cute could be happening at any moment… if I wasn’t stuck at work. 😉

  6. Jac says:

He is dressed like an old man walking around his retirement community in Florida. Those shoes…Bocce Ball anyone?

    • icerose says:

good description-not one of his better outfits -the combination of polo shirt and the hat just does not work for me. His best look is his Sherlock look. The curls take years of him

      • kri says:

I guess he just doesn’t care that much, and wears what he likes. That outfit needs just a little tweaking. I think maybe…take it all off, muss up the curls, and start talking in that velvety voice. Girls?

      • Isadora says:

The only thing that could redeem this outfit in the eyes of the Cumberbitches wouldn’t be tweaking but twerking.

    • MissMary says:

It looks like he’s trying to adopt the “wear the same outfit all the time in public to minimize the value of pap shots” school of dress.

Or he just really falls in love with one outfit and rides that sucker till the wheels fall off.

*moment of silence for the denim shirt that must’ve dissolved in the wash by now*

      • Lindy79 says:

I’m not sure if it was fan speculation or it originated from an actual quote but apparently that is what he does, to make photos less valuable or recognizable as to when they were taken. He throws a napkin on his face when he wants to mix it up (or look like a tit)

Those trousers and runners make me miss the maroon pants. They look like golf trousers. His upper body is working for me though. RAWR.

      • flavia_deluce says:

I don’t know if he’s said that’s what he does, but I find it a bit strange that he’s worn the same shirt three days in a row in 80+ degree Boston weather… seems like he might get a bit stinky. He wore the maroon pants (and polo and white flat cap) yesterday (I read a set report). 🙂

      • Sighs says:

I understand the tactic, but for the love of all that is holy, find something better. I live in Florida. It’s what everyone over 60 at the golf course wears.

      • MissMary says:

He mentioned at the con in NZ (or Australia?) that he wears the same shirt a lot so “everyone gets a chance to have a pic with him in it” in reference to why he wore the same thing to all the photo ops at the event(s). And a lot of celebs do the “same outfit/similar outfit” tactic to avoid pap shots or devalue them, so it makes sense if he’s doing that. Well, not so much the “I just want everyone to have a chance to have a pic of this awesome shirt” thing lol as a “cut down on the value of pap shots” deal.

      • Lilacflowers says:

The temperatures have been in the 80s and it is humid! Throw the darn shirt in the hotel laundry and put on a fresh one!

      • Old Enough says:

he’s apparently got a new one, short sleeved, that he wore on set one day with the purple pants and white cap. Summer outfit #1

      • pru says:

He must hate the new shirt because he looks very grumpy wearing it!
And just how did his hat get wrinkled ??

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

@Lilac, and others have you actually considered he may have bought half a doze alike??? I suredly doubt he keeps wearing the same day after day without washing it… C’mmon, that would be terrible… My theory is he buys several alike and we think he’s wearing always the same, when he’s not…

@pru, the grumpy look, maybe his photo was taken without his permission and he was deciding whether to punch or not the person?? 😉

    • SophieK says:

I hate the hat. It needs to go.

    • OhDear says:

      It’s the hat, IMO.

If he wore a baseball cap instead of that fedorathing, he’s blend in pretty well.

  7. Mia4S says:

Great to hear the Immitation Game is really good but dying at the #AlltheVelvet hashtag! Well if a Weinstein Oscar campaign is good for anything at least they’ll make sure he’s dressed well!

    • Miss Scarlet says:

      #AllTheVelvet? What’s that about?

      • Mia4S says:

While the dear boy does a tux or tails very nicely he has been known to wear the ocassional velvet suit at premieres. Sometimes it works…and sometimes it’s a good thing he’s so crazy talented! 😉

      • Felice says:

He wore two different velvet blazers for the Hobbit. He looked cute though.

  8. MissMary says:

I don’t live in Boston so forgive me if I eff up names of streets, BUT from what people have been posting online, they’ve been filming around G and Commerce streets (?). He apparently has been on set practicing the dialogue and accent but hasn’t filmed his scenes yet.

It was suggested on some site that people interested in filming locations and visiting them can check out a site called Location Vacations to get the info for some sets, etc.

(And, sidebar: He’s not been seen with anyone at all other than cast and crew, according to fans and people who have been at the set to see Depp. I stand by my thoughts that his hats are a complicated system to signal his secret GF, much like a male bird’s plumage.)

    • SophieK says:

And the mystery of the secret GF goes on and on…don’t forget the pink cellphone case. I think it’s part of the signal system too!

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Pink with a pic of Hello Kitty!!! That’s it.. I figured it out.. Hello Kitty is his secret girlfriend… how come i haven’t thought about it before…. 😛
I mean, I can already imagine all the male cats and female otters going crazy.. saying it can’t be… It’s like Romeo and Juliet, a Ottie and Kitty romance…

    • Kate2 says:

G Street is in Southie, where I live, MissMary. You may be thinking of Columbia for the other one.

I just checked the site you mentioned and they said that they were filming at 751 E. Broadway yesterday. That is LITERALLY 1 block from my house. I was AT that address just a couple hours later as I walked home from work and I didn’t even know they had been there.

Here are the locations they shot at. They’re actually almost done here:

      May 28: 170 I St, South Boston
      May 28: 226 W Broadway, South Boston
June 3: 1663 Columbia Rd, Boston
June 12: Gold St and Dorchester St, South Boston
      June 16 & 17: 111 G St, South Boston
June 18: D St and W 3rd St, South Boston
      June 19: 751 E Broadway, South Boston
      June 20: 95 C St, Boston

No idea where C Street is. Thinking its on the west side.

      • MissMary says:

I wonder if Ben’s part is really short/easy to film or if they’re doing some stuff in another city to stand in for Boston…

      • Lilacflowers says:

@MissMary, they have filmed some scenes in Somerville and Cambridge – they used Cambridge to fill in for New York. And they have also been shooting in Lynn and Chelsea because they more closely resemble Southie of the 70s than Southie does today. They’ll be shooting in Lynn on Monday. They’re looking for extras for a parade scene.

  9. PunkyMomma says:

My Otter! In Bean Town! In a tiny hat, again! Lilacflowers – rid him of the hats, please! And his bag – full of bivalves? (Furiously counting pennies for plane ticket to Boston.)

    • Lilacflowers says:

I’m really trying PunkyMomma! So far, I’ve been within a few yards of Depp twice but have not encountered your otter. If I do, that hat is going.

  10. starrywonder says:

He is hot. I wish I lived in Boston…though I could just take the train up from DC and see where he is at 🙂

  11. Lindy79 says:

ARMS AND PECS AND HIS GLORIOUS HANDS!!!!

I’ll just sit here staring and wishing I was that notebook. Cannot wait to see Imitation Game, in all seriousness.

  12. sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

He’s definitely a guy, what’s with the collar of the polo-shirt…. in one pic it’s up, in another half up, half down…. men…. never worried about how they look….

  13. Altariel says:

Looking like a retired grandad gone golfing! So no. But we all knows he polishes up better than a shiny new penny 🙂

  14. GeeMoney says:

Ugh, the outfit… I want to be his stylist so bad!

But I still love him… glad to see him working.

  15. AG-UK says:

NO that hat has to go. It is so ill fitting and makes him actually stand out more. If he didn’t wear it would be less noticeable.

  16. FLORC says:

His style is so odd to me. I don’t hate it, but it’s not attractive.
I think my opinion of him has dropped because of the coverage here.
Since you asked. I love otters, but wouldn’t want to hit it. So, no.

  17. Eve says:

I read an article where that Balfour woman sounded like one of the most obnoxious people on the planet.

I think it was an article from W Magazine — brace yourself for the content: how the “new poor” rich people are…*clutches pearls*…coping with being “poor” and not being able to afford the things they did in recent past.

    ETA: http://www.wmagazine.com/culture/2007/12/london_new_poor/

    • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Oh, that article had already been commented / mentioned here….Someone posted the link, I remember reading it..

    • GeeMoney says:

LOL… the once rich/wealthy now have to fend for themselves like the rest of us middle class folks?!?!? Say it isn’t so!

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

I’m already crying for them.. poor them.. :'(

      • Sighs says:

They’ve had to move to places like *trembles at the thought* Hammersmith! Of all places. It’s practically a favela.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Oh my, Balfour may not want to comment on that to BC, he was born in Hammersmith…. Darn, his place of birth is almost a favela??? Already feeling so sorry for all of them…. really…. I even have tears in my eyes.. maybe we should organize a petition to help those poor ones …Hammersmith.. terrible, terrible…

    • Lindy79 says:

I read that before and wanted to rip her to shreds but thought I’d look like a jealous fan girl.

I’m not keen on her interview technique, she doesn’t get up to greet her guests and there’s no natural flow there at all (we have a presenter here in Ireland who has our Friday night chat show and he’s the same, stiff as a board and no improvisation or deviation from the set questions whatsoever, it annoys me). She seems to get big names but I dunno, she seems to ask nothing you couldn’t find on wikipedia or with a half decent research.

As much as I’d like to think he’d go for someone with a bit of bite and who is intelligent who can banter and give as good as they get, I have a feeling he may end up with someone like her, which would be…disappointing.

      • SophieK says:

Sadly, my current theory is that the secret GF is actually her.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Well, he did mention once in an interview he “considered” himself an elitist.. so… no surprise there…

      • GeeMoney says:

        @SophieK

If she’s as awful as people have described her, I’m going to say she’s just an f*** buddy. I just can’t see him with someone like that.

I still have hope that he’ll settle down with someone worthy. *secretly hoping that I don’t have to eat my words*

        @sonalaceae

I don’t recall him saying that he was an elitist… unless you have a snippet of him saying it in an interview… he’s always trying to deny being posh, so…

      • SophieK says:

        @GeeMoney

Here’s hoping you’re right. I don’t want to believe he’d end up with someone like her. Maybe (hopefully) she is just a FWB. Time will tell.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

        @GeeMoney
It was in an italian Magazine, let me check.. corriere della serra:
he get’s asked: Do you consider yourself a snob or an elitist?
Answer: In some things yes, especially if I’m speaking to someone who doesn’t understand what I’m talking about. There’s a difference behind the words elitist and aristocratic, I prefer the first one.

        *Hope i translated everything correctly… *

      • GeeMoney says:

        @sonalaceae

It sounded like he picked the lesser out of the two evils in that answer. I could consider myself an elitist in regards to having the smartest and the brightest run the country, but f*** everything else that comes with that term.

Then again, I could just be defending him b/c I like him so much. LOL.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

@GeeMoney, yes, it’s choosing between the two, but I’m actually seeing him as a bit elitist (aren’t we all to some extent?.Honestly, I’m not seeing myself marrying someone without some level of education, someone who could barely read or without any general culture..)
I’m not criticizing him, but I’m saying he’ll probably end up marrying someone like her,.. probably….

    • Froop says:

She’s the daughter of an Earl so I guess that’s just the world she’s grown up in. The aristo set used to own Central London and now they don’t so much.

As for Lady K, I went off her when I found out she’d auditioned for Big Brother, been on a bunch of reality TV shows and tried her hand at becoming an actress in her twenties before she fell into her fashion gig. Bleh.

    • Sighs says:

Ha. I posted that link in the formula 1 thread. It made me ill. She sounds so vapid and superficial. I think they’re together. Too many coincidences. I was hoping he wouldn’t be that type, but… If you think about most of the people he’s been rumored with since the first one, they all are in that rich/well-connected/well-educated, but not necessarily “smart”/socialite/”model, journalist, fashion designer” that only has a “job” because of daddy’s connections types.
Makes me sad. I thought he was more interesting than that. Personally, I think he’s going after all the posh chicks that wouldn’t have given him a second glance in school.

      • Felice says:

I mean I’m sure he’s a lovely bloke behind the scenes but a different lovely bloke than what the public eye sees.

      • GeeMoney says:

Men will date chicks like that, but they rarely marry them.

I used to like this guy (and he was HOT, btw)… he dated only tall, pretty blondes (they all looked alike), and then ended up marrying a short, unattractive, mousy brunette… and they are still married to this day.

      • Lindy79 says:

I’m willing to give Anna James a pass, in that to my knowledge she’s at least got talent and a good career that isn’t based on her family name (Hearst and Balvour).
As an aside, I happened to see Cabin Fever 2 (or maybe 3) on a movie channel once and…Lydia Hearst is in it. It is truly awful but of course she ends up in her bra and pants.

@Sighs, I can see that too, especially since for 12 years he was in a relationship). I’d find it odd if they were dating and he acted like he barely knew her in Monaco and marched ahead of her. There’s being discrete and then being downright odd. Its not that big a deal to have a partner.

The one he settles down with will be interesting given all the comments he’s made about relationships and what he likes in women as a lot of them he’s been seen with since Olivia/Anna don’t seem to match that.

      • Old Enough says:

But is he in it for the long haul or just having fun accumulating some scores. Someone posted here on the last thread that his mum had some trouble with high faluting MIL. He might be wary of a permanent connection. And girlfriend is not necessarily wife. But then again, what he says he wants in a partner might not jibe with what he really wants.

      • Sighs says:

If your goal is to be accepted by the posh set, then you do marry people like that.

      • Freebunny says:

Just one answer: Olivia and Anna.

People keep forgetting about them all the time, but his only 2 official girlfriends were 2 talented, well-educated, strong and independant women.

Now, you can keep speculating about what his private life is really like.

      • Sighs says:

@free- no one’s forgetting them. Just since then his partners have been of a different sort. Even if they’re just rumored. Ever since he got much more famous.

      • Felice says:

Well I hope he didn’t lose himself. I was worried about that. I mean, as much as you can worry about someone you don’t know….

      • Freebunny says:

He can sleep with them but I’m not sure he would live with them.

      • granny says:

Ugh. I’m way too old to be fangirling like this, but I could not help myself. I was hoping that his choice would be better than a Kinvara type too. But, alas, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a relationship that he was keeping close to the vest and if it were her…

They’ve known each other for years. So, they don’t have to go on “dates” in public to get to know each other. He probably feels he can trust her, because they knew each other before he was famous. She’s from that public school set that he’s a part of, as much as he protests. She’s a horsey blonde, which does seem like a preference for him. She works in the glamour industry and is used to celebrities.

She’s friends with some of his close friends. Some of the fandom even seem to think that those friendships seem to be recent. She’s friends with Colin Firth’s and Gary Oldman’s wives. And we all know how BC admires them. She’s been at some of the same events as him, but they had no pictures together. And that’s odd, because most people aren’t afraid to be seen talking to their friends in public. It’s almost like there’s a concerted effort not to be seen together, excepting Monaco. But, yeah, still there too, kind of.

And – this is where I really need to get a hold of myself – I looked at K’s Instagram and saw that she went to a private island in Greece for a few days right after Hay and before the French Open. Now, if I were a high status person in the glare of the public eye, that’s probably where I’d take my sweetheart for a getaway, especially if I loved Greece.

Blah. Of course, I want this great talent whom I admire so to be happy. I’m just disappointed that there’s a great chance that his choice appears to be so… so mediocre, vapid, snobby and spoiled. She really isn’t a talented interviewer and she appears inarticulate and as though she was taught very little about social etiquette (common for someone of her background). Like her analysis of Tom Ford’s “A Single Man?” Better to be silent and appear dumb than open one’s mouth and remove all doubt, as they say. If she’s BC’s new love, no wonder she got THE Anna Wintour in an interview. The devil in Prada loves BC.

Although looking at her, the kids will at least have a helluva jawline. Bummer. Mild bummer that I will not be having Cumberbabies. Major bummer that Cumberbabies’ maybe mama is not actually pretty, smart or down to earth.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

        Lol @granny…. we’re all sorry for his taste… 🙂

      • Lindy79 says:

I’m the same, although there is feck all on tv and it’s even in-between footy matches so I am bored.

I dunno, not even speaking about BC specifically, I get the temptation to dip into your existing friend pool given his situation but just because you knew someone before you got really famous, doesn’t mean they’re less likely to want to be with you just because you’re famous, if that makes sense. Suppose it depends on how close they were before but his stock has gone up considerably and I’m sure SOME of his not-that-close-before female friends suddenly sat up and took notice when he started going to the Oscars/Globes/MET. Not saying she would or wouldn’t but it’s a little naive to think that knowing people prior automatically gives them a pass in the “using me for my fame” thing, when he could just as easily meet someone brand new who couldn’t care less. It just seems very limiting to me. (I’m thinking of someone like Matt Damon who married a bartender if memory serves)

This makes no sense I think, haha.

If she is, then please sort out simple things like his bloody sunglasses and hats. You’re in fashion for gods sake!!
At least get him ones that fit him!

      • Leo says:

@ granny, if Kinvara was in Greece at that time, she sure didn’t go there with BC. That was the D-day week and he was in London the whole time recording, including projects for D-day. I’m a history buff so that info stuck with me.

      • Felice says:

@Lindy, I genuinely believe that’s what happened with Alice Eve.

      • granny says:

@sonalaceae, Thanks for making me feel a little less silly.

@Lindy, Agreed on your point about, length of acquaintance not equating with weight of trust. But could any celebrity really tell the difference? It must be so tempting to believe that all of those who knew you “before” are more genuine than others.

@Leo, good point. I forgot about that.

As @UKBound said below, I do hope he’s being looked after – But by someone genuine.

      • delorb says:

I don’t think she’s a keeper. Didn’t he say he wanted children? Not saying that her age will prohibit her from having as many as she wants, but it does become difficult. I see him settling down with someone over a decade younger. Just my opinion, so don’t shank me too hard. Love him to pieces, but he’s still a guy and they don’t always do what is expected.

    • EscapedConvent says:

      @ Eve,

Hi Eve! I saw that article a few weeks ago and God, is it obnoxious. Lady KB = not terribly sympathetic. But Big Brother?! Oh no……no no no. It doesn’t get any more embarrassing than that, does it?

      • Maria says:

Granny why are you giving so silly assumptions, there is no way he could have been in Greece at that time.

I really don’t think the girlfriend is KB if he has one, if I would have a quess I would put in on someone else.

      • Eve says:

        @ EsCon:

It does! I mean, it’s possible to get worse than that (between you and me, I think she sounded racist, too — like, when she mentions having to “keep up with the Abramoviches”).

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Oh, @Eve, now that you mention it, I got a click in my mind … “Abramoviches”… oh God, maybe it’s her poshness??

*praying it is that, and not racism, if she’s actually dating BC… I’d be so disappointed….*

      • Sighs says:

Eve, you aren’t the only one that thought that sounded racist.

    • Kate2 says:

Every time I see “Balfour” I think of True Blood.

    • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

@Eve, sorry, wasn’t paying attention… YOU’RE BACK FROM THE DEAD!!!!
Thank God… Welcome back, honey, Thank God they were able to resuscitate you… Hope the grave didn’t give too much backaches…

      😀

      • Lilacflowers says:

Thank God! I feared manslaughter charges.

      • Eve says:

        @ Lilacflowers:

Well, you can’t use the words “Chris Evans” and “naked” in the same sentence without considering the risk of giving me a heart attack… ¬¬

    • JulK says:

Am I the only one that thinks that this may be a PR stunt?? I have to admit that it was beautifully executed. He made the E! News and was also reported in the Japanese press. In both cases, his reps were not available to comment.

I am sure he is dating here and there, but a girlfriend (as in like Olivia)?? Don’t even think he has the time to be honest. I don’t know this Kimvara, but from everything I read here… hardly his future wife.

      • MissMary says:

I’ve seen people wondering (mostly on tumblr tbh) if this is all to keep people from assuming he’s gay because he’s playing Turing and will likely being getting a lot of notice from the GLBTQIA community (esp in the UK) as the movie gets closer to release dates.

Personally, I don’t think that’s the case at all and he’s just dating as he’s always done and people are just noticing more now.

    • A.Key says:

You all sound like his mother, lol. She doesn’t have to be the smartest, most talented, beautiful, perfect genius on the planet. She just has to truly honestly love him. Who cares about the rest. No one is perfect. I’m sure he can be as snobby, arrogant, and silly. In fact I know it, he’s said many worse things in interviews than her. He’s also not beautiful or a genius. In fact I think they’re pretty evenly matched.

      • granny says:

        Or his grandmother.

No, no one’s perfect. But having more than a small handful of redeeming qualities is usually preferable. And, yes, BC is not perfect – but evenly matched with that twit who actually murmurs a wan “yay” every time one of her overqualified guests arrives for their “interview?” Please just say you’re playing devil’s advocate.

  18. InvaderTak says:

I so wish the What are you wearing Benedict? tumblr was still active! That hat…

  19. Intro Outro says:

The sneakers are godawful, but I’m more interested in IG screenings, great to hear they seem to have gone down well!

  20. Boredwithimdb says:

Is it just me seeing things but in photo No 9 on the bunch above this article it looks like there is a tiny woman crouching down behind him looking like she is searching for something on the ground. Bizarre as the image looks out of scale.

  21. pru says:

Benny’s style isn’t going to change, I’m afraid. If hanging with Anna Wintour and attending fashion events hasn’t gotten him a stylist or changed his fashion sense, I don’t think it’s going to happen. So, silly hats will stay on his head! And I’m going to just appreciate that his quirky style is something fame hasn’t changed about him and call it endearing.
As far as filming goes, all I can say is please PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE that accent, you corrupt midget, you!

    • Lilacflowers says:

I truly fear that accent. I’ve worked with Billy and I truly fear that accent.

      • MissMary says:

I wonder if he and the producers/director/accent coach will go for a more general American movie-Boston accent instead of Billy’s specific one…

      • Lilacflowers says:

MissMary, sadly, accent coaches tend to think of a “general Boston movie accent” as sounding like Rose Kennedy after a stroke, which describes none of us.

      • Green Earrings says:

        @Lilacflowers

As a native Bostonian, I must say I get a giggle every time I read your “Rose Kennedy after a stroke” assessment of faux Boston accents. I cringed through Tom Hanks’ in Captain Phillips, and the entire cast of The Perfect Storm stand out as particularly bad, although it’s almost easier to make note of good Boston accents because they are so few and far between. Jeremy Renner in The Town was passable. (There, I said something positive).

I think what may save BC, is that (IMO) Billy Bulger had a very lyrical, Irish sounding component to his speech, mixed with what would be considered a typical Boston/Southie accent. Every photo of him this week has shown him with headphones at the ready, so I’m sure he’s been immersing himself in it.

A Boston accent is probably the most difficult to master of all the American accents, or it seems to be the one people have the most trouble with. BC, however, is a natural mimic. He was able to pull off that crazy hybrid thing Julian Assange has. I think he will be able to get it right.

  22. jammypants says:

haha the popped collar! He’s in good shape but what a waste putting that body in those clothes!

  23. sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

ok, I was reading an article in german and Ben has to thank the producer his luck in love, since she’s the one who hooked him up with his new “girlfriend”???
“Sein Liebesglück hat er angeblich der Produzentin selbst zu verdanken, denn sie soll ihn verkuppelt haben.”
Was this on the original article???

    • Lindy79 says:

The plot thickens…If the producer introduced them, it’s hardly Kinvara or anyone he knew previously then?

Or could that just be their interpretation of the Rebecca Eaton thing?

      • Leo says:

No, this was already in the original Page Six article. It said RE’s other job was finding a love interest for BC.
That was actually the moment my eyebrows touched my hairline. Why would she be hooking him up? Is she moonlighting as Yenta? 🙂

Anyway, who knows what she really said. But this isn’t the first time she talked about match-making and BC. It’s described in her book, she talked to him about it 2-3 years ago at the GGs.

Trying to conclude almost anything based on that article is a lost cause to me since all we got was a processed and retold statement of who know what quote.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

        I don’t know… the article isn’t long… or I’m interpreting german wrong …
        Anyone who also speaks German???

This is the text from the article:

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

She didn’t ntroduce them… she paired them off.. don’t know if that’s the same…

      • Leo says:

@ sonalaceae, I speak German, and “verkuppeln” would be best translated as “match-making”. But this really isn’t something new. The news was reported only by Page Six and all the other articles are just a rehash or in this case a translation. Nothing new in them.
As I said, the original mentioned that RE’s other job was finding BC a love interest. You can read it in yesterday’s CB post.

And, yes, she (allegedly) mentioned that at an industry panel at Cannes. No one else covered the story.

      • Jessi says:

@Leo. I agree…I’m still thinking there’s nothing here and they’re making a story out of a non-quote. And if there is a GF he’s hiding her so well it’s ridiculous. I sure as hell wouldn’t have sat home and skipped the Monaco GP and the French Open finals while the boy went out with other “female friends”. Please. And I don’t think for a minute if there is someone it’s Kinvara. I think she pulled all photos and mentions of him from her social media to get away from the rabid fans overanalyzing and constantly commenting.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

So basically, she wants her name splattered onto Ben’s biography when he writes it (in a few years) with a thank you note for introducing him to the love of his life… That’s probably what we should get from this “quote” / “interview”…. That way she’ll be oh so famous as a matchmaker????

        *with a cynical grin*…

Doing that is basically calling him an idiot who can’t find a girlfriend on his own, isn’t it? I’d be offended if a friend of mine dared doing that to me… you know when friends try to set you dates with some friends of theirs… I’d kill my friends if they ever did that to me…

    • SophieK says:

Okay, now I’m officially confused. 🙁

    • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

verkuppeln means paired off together.. so if she’s paired them off???? Totally confused… God, i need to repractise my german STAT…. She mentioned this in Cannes????

    • Katie says:

That’s the way I originally understood it, sonalaceae? The original article made it seem like Eaton thought herself an informal matchmaker or something.

I may be in the minority but I seriously doubt it’s Balfour, who seems more like a casual friend than a close one tbh. She’d benefit from and is used to press dealings, can’t imagine she’d want to be secret. Someone not in the public eye at all, though, is a different story, which lends a tiny bit of credibility to the original source of ‘secret gf’ rumors.

    • Raven says:

I think it bears mentioning that in Rebecca Eaton’s book (which came out last fall), she talks about having a matchmaking conversation with Benedict at the Golden Globes. So this could have all happened back in 2012 or 2013 and she’s just mentioning it now because she felt like it was relevant. The dates she set him up with may have been a disaster, or maybe she hasn’t set him up with anyone yet and merely wants to, like a nosy, old aunt.

      • MissMary says:

TBH and maybe it’s my cynical “WTFever” attitude or something, but this sounds more like my yentaing aunt than a serious “Oh, no, he’s dating someone. ” More of a “y’all need to step off because I already found him someone and she’s wonderful. Too bad so sad for you.”

Maybe he does have a gf. Maybe he doesn’t. But Eaton’s “interview” really doesn’t convince me he does.

      • Raven says:

@MissMary, that was the immediate impression I got from what she said so the fact that her comment is being taken so seriously by fans and picked up by so many news sources is astonishing to me. Who knew Page Six was such a reliable source?

  24. EleanorRigby says:

Why I have any investment is a problem BUT I hope it’s not someone as vapid and self-focused as Kinvera. Lots of pictures of sunsets from various exotic locations, photos of herself with well-connected people, the occasional “inspirational” quote. UHG. Not that the man needs my permission but If that’s what he’s into I’ll be so disappointed.

    • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Why any of us is invested is a problem.. I need to get a life… STAT…
And I’d be disappointed too.. but fame sometimes changes people and priorities.. or maybe she’s a better person than what she shows off to the public.. God knows… ehehheheheh.. Whatever…

    • SophieK says:

      @EleanorRigby

My thoughts exactly. I don’t know why I even care and maybe I’m just bored at work right now, but I’m hoping he’s with someone else other than her.

    • Raven says:

I agree, she’s boring and I absolutely hate to use the term, but BASIC. I’m not impressed with her interview skills or how she treats her guests (like refusing to stand to greet Tom Ford and sitting motionless as he moved in for an embrace). Nothing about her career seems terribly serious, she just moves from one thing to the next every few years like most uninteresting and untalented women in her position. One gets the impression she’s got most of what she has through her considerable connections, and she even admitted as much in an interview.

Maybe it’s just me but I always felt Benedict would be a good match for someone in the STEM field. Maybe an academic, a researcher, engineer, author, etc. He joked around about wanting to marry Spock because he would be logical and do the taxes and math, so maybe someone like that could be a yin to his yang.

      • Lindy79 says:

This, you’ve summed up exactly what I was thinking on both counts so it’s not just you. There’s at least two of us 😀

      • Froop says:

STEM? Not on your life. His long term partner will most likely be some bland blonde Sloaney socialite called Muffy, who will immediately quit her fashion/PR job and have four kids in quick succession.

      • Raven says:

@Froop, a gal can dream! One hopes he wouldn’t settle for a Sloane ranger but there does seem to be an overabundance of those types in his circle. It’s just so predictable. Come on, Ben, shock us, be different.

      • Encumbered says:

Well, he can have me. I’m a professor of psychology. Oops…hope I didn’t just out myself to any students. Any way, there would be many “in depth” communications. 🙂

      • Joanie says:

        Froop nailed it.

      • JulK says:

Well he might want a “STEM girl”, but does he have access to them?
Those worlds don’t usually collide. I don’t think actors are different than engineers, academics, or whatever.. they hang out with the people they meet through work or mutual friends but it is never that “far away”. I know many academics, doctors and scientists. They are all paired with engineers, lawyers scientists. None of them have met an actor or celebrity in their lives…

  25. Maria of MD says:

Oh, leave him alone about the hat. He looks fine.

  26. UKBound says:

They MUST be paying him to wear that Izod shirt. Isn’t that very Eighties? I hated that crocodile, even then. I feel very sorry for that guy. He does not get a break. Everyone is sticking her nose into his love life. It is not bad enough trying to find someone you are compatible with, but he has to find someone willing to put up with considerable crap just to be with him.

I think he is super stressed and worn out. He is trying to please everyone and dancing as fast as he can. I hope he knows about adrenal fatigue, because I bet he has it. Everyone wants a piece of him and they objectify him non stop. He is very pale and wan looking lately. He is a people pleaser and that can wear you out quickly.

I highly doubt this crazy PBS woman has her hooks in him. She probably introduced him to friends or family. I hope he does not deny the girlfriend rumor. We all want to know, but he deserves some privacy. I hope he has someone taking care of him somewhere.

    • granny says:

I think he’s okay. At least, I hope so. He deserves privacy and to be well taken care of. Hopefully, there is someone fabulous doing that.

    • Chameleon says:

I think all these rumours about his secret girlfriend have one effect: they help the cumber”cookies” to get used to Cumberbatch having a girlfriend.
I am not sure if this is done intentionally but that is the effect of these secret girlfriend rumours.

      • SophieK says:

I thought of that too– get the fangirls used to the inevitable fact that he’ll end up with someone soon. Maybe she’ll be with him for all the promo, etc for TIG.

      • MissMary says:

I really don’t think he or any celeb thinks “Oh, I’d better get the fans used to me having a life and being a sexual being outside of their fantasies.” If, in this case, BC did, I really doubt he’d go via Rebecca Eaton to do it.

      • Nic says:

It really isn’t. Unless a person is completely off their trolley, then I don’t think they need getting used to the idea that a man will have a girlfriend.
If such crazies do exists then they’re VERY minimal and I think he’s gone a bit strange if he’s catering some weird plan centred around them when he should be just..getting on with his life and doing his job.

      • Felice says:

I’m here for the man tbh :p But I am interested in who he ends up with.

  27. loribear says:

I love the way he acts so casual with his dress sense , but those trainers really don’t suit him, i like the way how down to earth he is , he does’nt act snobby like alot of actors or actresses do, ive come across some quite cold people when i lived at sheffield, & some of the women could be quite bitchy too, whereas benedict does’nt like to think if himself as being too upperclass which is nice, & he’s worked hard to get where he us today. 😊

  28. Godwina says:

I am mystified* how I am completely in lust for him as Sherlock and completely “meh” to “ugh” for him everywhere else.

*Well, hair, makeup, wardrobe and lighting, but still.

    • Boredwithimdb says:

Me too. I think he is incredibly attractive as Sherlock but not nearly so much with his real life “look.” I think it’s the hair. The longer length and the natural curls falling onto his forehead really enhance his best features. But, sadly, he seems to prefer it really short, flattened and slicked back, all of which just enhance his worst features.

I guess some people prefer him that way but to me he looks like a totally different and much sexier guy with the Sherlock hair.

      • Godwina says:

        Nailed it.

Also, that greatcoat does him massive favours (as it would most chaps–hubbah).

    • Intro Outro says:

@Godwina: I think it’s because of the type of characters he usually plays. Take Tietjens, Ford, I don’t know, David from Wreckers or Frankenstein. Or even Guillam, to an extent. All these characters are, imo, unsexy by definition because of their insecurity, softness/weakness, certain lack of charisma or maybe of leadership qualities.

  29. Patris says:

Ben today at a bar in Boston, sitting alone and watching soccer. I think we can stop discussing nonexistent girlfriends
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bqr7ykOCQAE_FDd.jpg

    • UKBound says:

Wow, Patris. Thanks for posting. How sad he is sitting by himself. Some of those Boston girls need to keep him company.

      • Nic says:

There’s nothing sad about sitting by yourself. He’s a popular guy with many friends.. Being on his own once in a while is very healthy indeed.

      • MissMary says:

What Nic said… And he’s been spotted out solo many times and having a good enough time, by witness accounts. Some people just like going out alone and it’s healthy for ’em, esp folks with a lot of demands on their time and attention.

    • Sighs says:

He’s in Boston working. And Lady K doesn’t seem like a footy fan. I’m disappointed how few people are watching the game in that bar. Stupid Americans don’t know what they’re missing. (I’m American. I’m allowed to insult my own people) I cannot WAIT for the US/PORTUGAL game tomorrow!! Go USA!!!

    • Raven says:

Not to indulge my inner Sherlock too much, but it looks like there’s a napkin on the chair next to him and his chair is turned toward it (and away from the game he’s watching). He may be there with someone who’s gone out for a smoke or in the restroom. Doesn’t have to be a girlfriend, however, might just be a guy on the crew who wanted to watch the game too.

    • Encumbered says:

      Now…let’s just say that shirt…FITS! Oh, my….

Wonder if there is information posted with the owner of the picture. Details such as how long he was there, if he was alone, possibly saving someone’s seat, or whatever. So, what’s the original source?

    • Lilacflowers says:

Arrrgghh! I have been in that bar and can’t place it for the life of me but I recognize the artwork. As for why there wouldn’t be a lot of other people around, yesterday and today have been two of the most beautiful days we have had this year and people were outside. My neighborhood has multiple World Cup parties going on.

      • Felice says:

        He was cheering for Ghana…..*success*

      • Encumbered says:

One of life’s most important lessons: never interrupt a man watching a game unless a life is in peril. Otherwise, the consequence could be getting told to get lost…or see you later.

  30. TotallyBiased says:

Not really up on the otter (you may notice me lurking outside the garden gates in That Other Thread), but I seem to recall reading a quote several years ago where he rather gleefully speaks of “punching above his weight class” since the success of Sherlock– and presumably since the end of Olivia and he….I don’t really know the timing on that.
S’pose the article must have been in 2012, because I’m pretty sure I only saw it as it was in a publication with some little thing about Hollow Crown ( 🙂 )
Any way…I just got the impression he was enjoying a new found level of success in ‘intra-personal relationships i.e. shagging’ that wasn’t necessarily reflective of his previous relationship goals. Perhaps it’s just taking him a little while to get it out of his system?

    • MissMary says:

I can’t remember which interview it was in but it was around the time of STiD where he mentioned that goals and desires change and he wishes people would stop bringing up the kids and marriage thing and acting like he lied about it or something awful happened, etc. Not his exact words but the interview itself touched on some things from past ones and he seemed irked that people kept wanting him to pine after a family.

      • Felice says:

He said he can wait. I’m sure he still wants them but he’s probably annoyed with the ‘omg give him a child’ thing.

      • UKBound says:

I think he was mad that people were asking what had happened, that he said he wanted kids and it seemed like he had changed his mind. He was very open to admit that he wanted kids. He opened himself up and some people attack when they get the opportunity. I think it is bad enough to want something so badly, like kids, and not have it happen. It is infinitely worse to have people ask you about it. I would be mortified to have my opinions published and repeated year after year. I hate it when my family does it. I can’t imagine having it done by members of the public.

  31. UKBound says:

Since you guys constantly talk about what type of women Benedict has gone out with, I decided to do some research. I had only seen Olivia in Sherlock.

Here is a another video. You will have to say you are over 18 to watch it:

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1ca9oy_olivia-poulet-the-rotters-club_shortfilms

I had not seen daily motion before, but they have different videos than youtube.

    • Felice says:

      You opened a door, mate…..

    • UKBound says:

I’m starting to feel guilty for posting that video. I must say, I was very impressed by her lack of cellulite and utter lack of self consciousness. I always thought Olivia looked very haughty and cold in her pictures. I know you can’t tell from pictures, but that was my impression. After seeing a bit more of her, she seems very funny. I would not have the nerve to film a sex scene for a movie.

I’m posting a link to a hilarious Ben video to balance out this thread:
